    TRAIN : Qinghai Tibet Railways JOURNEY : Xining to Lhasa (vice versa) Journey Duration : Upto 2 Days Day to Day Itinerary Unlike trains to Tibet from other gateway cities, the trains from Xining depart several times a day, since all other Tibet trains will stop in Xining before reaching Lhasa. The departure time of Xining Lhasa trains ranges from 12:27 at noon to 21:27 in the evening, offering flexible choices for tourists. Among all the trains to Tibet, there are two trains directly originated from Xining , one numbered as No.Z6801 departing every other day, and the other as No.Z6811 scheduled to run within a seasonal period. Timetable of Direct Xining to Lhasa Train Train No. Z6801 is the only train that starts directly from Xining and ends in Lhasa. It departs every other day at 14:01 from Xining Railway Station and arrives in Lhasa at 11:20 on the next day. Besides, Train No. Z6811 which bounds for Shigatse can also take tourists to Lhasa from Xining. The train from Xining to Shigatse is a seasonal train departing every day. Page 17~32 1 Journey through south Yushu of Qinghai Province, eastern Tibet Nangqen to Mekong Headwaters, July 2019 Tamotsu (Tom) Nakamura Part 1 Buddhists’ Kingdom – Monasteries, rock peaks, blue poppies “Yushu used to be a strategic point of Qinghai, explorers’ crossroads and killing field of frontier.” Geography and Climate of Yushu With an elevation of around 3,700 metres (12,100 ft), Yushu has an alpine subarctic climate, with long, cold, very dry winters, and short, rainy, and mild summers. Average low temperatures are below freezing from early/mid October to late April; however, due to the wide diurnal temperature variation, the average high never lowers to the freezing mark. Despite frequent rain during summer, when a majority of days sees rain, only June, the rainiest month, has less than 50% of possible sunshine; with monthly percent possible sunshine ranging from 49% in June to 66% in November, the city receives 2,496 hours of bright sunshine annually. The monthly 24-hour average temperature ranges from −7.6 °C (18.3 °F) in January to 12.7 °C (54.9 °F) in July, while the annual mean is 3.22 °C (37.8 °F). About three-fourths of the annual precipitation of 486 mm (19.1 in) is delivered from June to September.

Project Profile and Japan’s ODA Loan Mongolia Beijing North Korea China South Korea Project site Xian Nepal Ankang Bhutan India Taiwan Myanmar Vietnam Laos Project site location map (Xian-Ankang, Shannxi Province) Qingcha Tunnel 1.1 Background The project site (Xian- Ankang) is located in the southern part of Shaanxi Province where the 3000-meter high Qinling Mountains extend over 1500 kilometers, and was therefore undeveloped due to difficulties in transportation and remoteness from cities. Southwest of the project site is Sichuan Province, the largest province with a population of 110 million accounting for 10% of the population of China. However, as there is no other transport route to Sichuan Province than taking a detour around the Qinling Mountains, there were only limited routes to transport energy and everyday commodities from the north. Railway transport from other regions to Sichuan Province depended on Baoching Line (Baoji-Chengdu) from the north and Xiangyu Line (Xiangfan-Ankang-Chongquing) from the east, and both lines were operating to full capacity. It was particularly difficult to double-track Baoching Line, which takes a detour to avoid the Qinling Mountains because of 1) long distance of transport, 2) large cost to transport on a gradient at an angel of 3%, and 3) the topographical problem. The opening of the electrified single track of Xian-Ankang Line not only helped increase the transport capacity within Shaanxi Province but also shortened the traveling distance to Chongquing and eased the transportation load on Baoching Line.

No. 2 June 2009 Journal of Cambridge Studies 67 The Star-shaped Towers of the Tribal Corridor of Southwest China Frederique DARRAGON∗ Unicorn Heritage Institute, Sichuan University ABSTRACT: Hundreds of free-standing tall towering stone structures, some of the most astonishing star shapes, are still standing, in the remote, earthquake prone, mountains of Western Sichuan and Southeastern Tibet, part of a region also called Kham. I had stumbled by coincidence upon them, but I later learned that no one knew who had built them, or why, or when. After 11 years of research, hampered by the lack of local written language, and after sending 68 samples of wood, collected from their now broken beams, for carbon-dating, I was able to establish that the towers still standing were built from 200 AD to 1600 AD, they must have been thousands, and they span over a territory large as a third of France. I was also able to determine that, in fact, they belong to 4 different groups, each located in a specific geographical pocket that corresponds to the traditional lands of an ancient tribe. The towers, standing between at 1500 to 4000 meters above sea level, have shapes, masonry techniques and architectural characteristics that are unique to this region and, also, contrary to most other extraordinary towering buildings in the world, they are lay and vernacular constructions. These flamboyant towers are architectural masterpieces and outstanding examples of traditional human settlement and land use which deserve a UNESCO inscription under everyone of the 7 criteria. It is our common responsibility to make known and protect such glorious heritage.

Architectural design firms from all over the world have participated in China’s design and building practice. One of the leading forces of this progress, however, is the state-owed design institute, which is a unique type of architectural design practice originally formed in the Maoist era (1949 - 1976) in China. Different from private practices, the design institute is institutionally associated with the government and significantly influenced by governmental policies. Taking the China Architecture Design and Research Group (CAG) as an example, this thesis aims to summarize the common and consistent features of the practice in the design institute in the post-Mao era (1976 - present) and to find an underlying socio-political mechanism that is perhaps driving the design practice in specific settings. In this research, the practice in the design institute is studied with a focus on the design agenda of architects. In order to capture a picture of the evolution of design ideas, I employed the concept of ‘criticality’ into my research from the ‘critical’ and ‘post-critical’ discussion in North America and East Asia. The formal characteristics of CAG’s works are tested in this measurement for an analytical interpretation.

Flying into Xining, start the first part of the tour in Tong Ren and Gui De. One of the oldest and best-preserved ancient towns sits in Tong Ren, with over six ethnic groups living together. Buildings are simple in style and they are all constructed on the rise and fall of the terrain. It is also the birth place of Regong Art, which put Tong Ren on the map, making it famous for its thangkas and painted status. Then, we continue to Gui De, to see the stunning multicolored clay scenery of the Danxia Canyon. Set against the contrasting blue skies and teal waters of the Yellow River, this is a lovely spot to spend half a day wandering and taking photos of the unique geology of the Tibetan Plateau. Heading back to Xining spend a night on the train to climb all the way up to Lhasa on Christmas eve. While Lhasa may be cold for most of us in winter, it is warm for the mountain nomads who migrate to gather in Lhasa. This colourful display is a winter exclusive not to be missed and avoids the tourist crowds during the summer. In Lhasa, we will visit the famous Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, catch the monks debating in the Sera Monastery, follow the pilgrim circuit in Ganden and explore the bazaar of Barkhor.
