Jie Cai September 2009 2 Hydro power in China Abstract Today, with the great development of science and technology, it seems to be more and more important to develop renewable energy sources. In this thesis, I would like to introduce something about Chinese water resources. The renewable energy sources can generate electricity. Furthermore, hydropower is the most often used energy in the world. Hydropower develops quickly in recent years in China and it is significant to Chinese industries. The data collection in this paper comes from China Statistics Yearbook and this study draws on the existing literature, which projects Chinese future hydropower development. -

Hydroelectric Exploitation and Sustainable Development of the Yalong River
UNHYDRO 2004 Beijing HYDROELECTRIC EXPLOITATION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE YALONG RIVER Chen Yunhua: Professorial Senior Engineer,General Manager of Ertan Hydropower Development Company Ltd. Abstract: The middle and lower reaches of the Yalong River are China’s few river basins with favorable conditions for hydropower development. The abundant water resources of the Yalong have environment-friendly features in all perspectives. With the river running through Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province in China’s Southwest, development of the Yalong will greatly promote economic development and social advancement of the minority areas. Only when a river basin is developed and managed by a vigorous and responsible company can a harmony between environment and development be achieved to the maximum extent, and a successful implementation of the strategies for sustainable development be assured. Ertan Hydropower Development Company Ltd. (EHDC) has been authorized by the Central Government to exploit the hydropower resources of the Yalong River. This is a glorious mission and historical responsibility for the Ertaners. EHDC has been making a plan for ecological protection of the river basin with corresponding solutions, which will be demonstrated in the overall planning of the basin. Through construction of Ertan Hydroelectric Project, outstanding achievements and successful experience have been obtained in resident resettlement and environment protection. The development- oriented policies brought practical opportunities to the affected people, and the environment management efforts have started to show their effects. Hydropower development has proved to have more benefits than disadvantages in terms of environmental impacts. With the successful completion of Ertan Project as a new start, EHDC is looking into the future, and will follow the development guideline of “basin, cascading, rolling and comprehensiveness”, and persistently pursue after environment- friendliness and sustainable development. -

Severe restric- tions on expression accompanied by a relentless disinformation campaign engenders facts, knowledge and truth to become priceless. This has long been the case with Tibet. At the time of the publication of this report, Tibet has been fully oc- cupied by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) for just five months shy of sixty years. As China has sought to develop Tibet in certain ways, largely economically and in Chinese regions, its obsessive re- strictions on the flow of information have only grown more intense. Meanwhile, the PRC has ready answers to fill the gaps created by its information constraints, whether on medieval history or current growth trends. These government versions of the facts are backed ever more fiercely as the nation’s economic and military power grows. -

No. 2 June 2009 Journal of Cambridge Studies 67 The Star-shaped Towers of the Tribal Corridor of Southwest China Frederique DARRAGON∗ Unicorn Heritage Institute, Sichuan University ABSTRACT: Hundreds of free-standing tall towering stone structures, some of the most astonishing star shapes, are still standing, in the remote, earthquake prone, mountains of Western Sichuan and Southeastern Tibet, part of a region also called Kham. I had stumbled by coincidence upon them, but I later learned that no one knew who had built them, or why, or when. After 11 years of research, hampered by the lack of local written language, and after sending 68 samples of wood, collected from their now broken beams, for carbon-dating, I was able to establish that the towers still standing were built from 200 AD to 1600 AD, they must have been thousands, and they span over a territory large as a third of France. I was also able to determine that, in fact, they belong to 4 different groups, each located in a specific geographical pocket that corresponds to the traditional lands of an ancient tribe. The towers, standing between at 1500 to 4000 meters above sea level, have shapes, masonry techniques and architectural characteristics that are unique to this region and, also, contrary to most other extraordinary towering buildings in the world, they are lay and vernacular constructions. These flamboyant towers are architectural masterpieces and outstanding examples of traditional human settlement and land use which deserve a UNESCO inscription under everyone of the 7 criteria. It is our common responsibility to make known and protect such glorious heritage. -

Introduction
TIBET UNDER COMMUNIST CHINA Introduction Tibet Under Communist China—50 Years is a detailed and comprehensive examination of the various strands of Beijing’s imperial strategy to cement its rule over one of the restive outposts of communist China’s sprawling empire. It sheds new light on the over-arching geopolitical impulses that drive China to initiate new, and sometimes contradictory, policies in Tibet, only to reverse them in a decade or two, all in the attempt to ensure that one loose brick does not bring the whole imperial edifice crumbling down. In this respect, Tibet Under Communist China—50 Years will be a new resource to both China specialists, governments, businessmen and other interested parties in their understanding of the world’s largest surviving empire, which also happens to be its biggest market with a booming economy and an insatiable appetite for energy and other resources. As long as China remained a one-party dictatorship sticking to a socialist pattern of development, the natural resources of the so-called minority peoples were fairly safe. Now with China’s conversion to a market economy with one of the highest annual growth rate in the world, the abundant natural resources on the fringes of the empire are rapidly exploited to fuel the dynamic development of the centre. The change of the Chinese attitude to its imperial fringes, from mere imperial outposts to resource-rich colonies to supply the raw material to maintain a dynamic economy, should be of enormous concern to the so-called minorities who inhabit these vast regions endowed with rich natural resources. -
