1. Child abuse can take manyforms, lt can be verbal. lt can be implied, as with the threat of violence. lt can be overtly physical, striking a child in anger. It can be sexual. Whetherverbal or physical, implied orovert, there is no excuse for child abuse, ever. Let's do whatever we can to prevent child abuse.

2, Parents, remember that LovE . . . can sometimes be spelled: T-l-M-E. Take time to be actively involved with your children. Play with them. Do some of the things they enjoy. Listen to them. Read to them. lt,s the TIME you spend with them that communicates just how important they are to you.

3. Before you discipline your child for an offense, take inventory of your own mentaland emotionalstate:are you reacting in angerto whatthe child did? the of the day causing you to lash out without thinking about what you're saying or doing? The purpose of discipline is to correct a child,s behavior in love, not anger.

4. lf you know a single mother, why not reach out to her, offer to do what you can to help her out. Maybe volunteer to give her a ride, or pick up her kids, or watch them on occasion. Be a depenrdable resource, and a source of encouragement for her. lt can mean much more than you know. Thanks for getting involved.

s. when a babywon't stop crying, it can be veryfrustrating. But never, ever shake a baby- it can result in irreparable damage, even death. lf you need a breakfrom a crying infant, call a loved one ora friend and askthem to come overto help, lf no one's available, place the baby safely in a crib and take a few minutes time-out for yourself.

A Hey, being a parent is hard work. lt's true for moms, and it,s true for dads, especially new or young dads. They're learning every day what it means to be a father, and though they may not show it, they appreciate the support of their friends' Take time to encourage the fathers in your circle with an understanding ear, or even just a friendly smile.

7. We all know that children are precious, a gift to be cherished and protected. But do we make sure that the children in our lives know their worth? Whether it's our own kids grandkids and orthose of our neighbors and coworkers, let,s build them up with affirming words and loving actions.

Sometimes parents need a break from the daily stresses of life. perhaps you,re in a position to help out. Consider offeringto baby-sitthe kids-even if only for an hour or two. or maybe you could pick them up after school or drop 'them off at a game once in a while. offering to do some small favor can mean much more than we might know.

e. Children need love, especially when theyrdo not deserve it. when kids act out, it's easyto react in anger. lnstead, we n6ed to stop, considerthe situation, and respond in love. Discipline administered in love can impact a child,s life for good, whereas an angry response can do a world of harm.

10. If you have reason to believe that a child is being harmed or is at risk, don,t just ignore what you believe to be the case. Ask a trusted neighbor. or call your local child abuse hotline or even the police and report your concerns. Betterto take action and maybe help save a child, than to do nothing and later wish you had gotten involved.
