Saturday May 25 Broomstick Lace by Cindie Bennett 8:30-11:30 am Skill Level: Advanced Beginner Class Description: Broomstick Lace is a historic technique from the 19th century that continues to give a sophisticated look to any project. You will learn how to properly create broomstick lace using a crochet hook and knitting needles to create a beautiful, elegant infinity scarf. Student should bring: Nothing Homework: No homework Material Supply Fee: None Instructors Bio: Cindie Bennett is primarily a crochet instructor and designer. However, she loves practicing and learning all aspects of the . She opened a local studio (Academics of ) which offers all skills levels of education for knitting and crochet. She has published multiple Intarsia designs into magazines. Some of her most recent publications were to Happily Hooked Magazine and Crochet World.

Spinning Dog Fibers by Ingrid McMaster 8:30-11:30 am Skill Level: Advanced Beginner - Student should understand the concept of drafting and and be able to do so. Class Description: Students will learn the qualitative and quantitative aspects of dog fibers and understand them relative to traditional protein spinning fibers like Merino, Angora and Alpaca. We will discuss the pros and cons of using dog fibers and how various breeds compare to each other. We will discuss fiber collection, washing, preparing and spinning techniques. Students should bring: A wheel in good working condition with three , niddy noddy, lazy Kate and hand cards. There will not be time to fix or prepare wheels during the class. Students needing to rent a wheel (Cost $15) for class should contact the instructor via email a minimum of 4 weeks prior to the class at [email protected]. Homework: Dog fibers will be provided for observation and use. Students may bring dog fibers with them. The fibers should be brushed (not shorn nor collected via furminator). Dogs ideally will be primarily indoor dogs to minimize cleaning necessary. Cat fibers may be used as well, however we will not get into their quantitative aspects as much as with the dog fibers. Ingrid has been spinning since 2004. She finished the Olds College Master Spinner Certificate Program the summer of 2017 with her In depth study on “Domestic Dog Fiber Characteristics for Handspinning.” She teaches spinning at the store and at fiber festivals. She is a fiber evangelist and loves discussing the technical qualities of fiber types and their possible uses in end products.

Stranded Knitting: Norwegian to Fair Isle by Geanie Helfrich 8:30-3:30 pm Skill Level: Advanced Beginner and up Class Description: Learn the technique of stranded knitting and tackle any colorwork project with confidence! Students will learn 2 color stranding, reading colorwork charts, locking down floats, and steeking, while learning all about traditional Norwegian and Fair Isle garment construction. Student should bring: Notebook and pencil, 50g-100g DK weight yarn in 2 high contrast solid colors. US Size 3- 16” circular needle, US Size 4-16” circular needle, stitch markers and needle. For the Pattern: Go to http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/norwegian-star-headband--hat You will receive a special download code to receive the pattern free at time of checkout Homework: Prepare your choice/size of headband or hat instructions through round 1 of chart. Leave stitches on circular needle. Material Supply Fee: None Instructor Bio: Geanie Helfrich (Clariknitter on ) is an accomplished knitter with 25+ years’ experience playing with yarn. She has taught countless knitters from beginner to advanced. Geanie specializes in teaching traditional Norwegian, Aran, & Fair Isle construction techniques. She expanded her teaching experience in 2016 by teaching at STITCHES South in Nashville. Geanie began designing knitwear in 2015 and maintains an Instagram presence as Geanie Helfrich Designs. Color Filled Spinning With Top & Hand Carded Batts by Kathy Arnold 8:30-3:30 pm Skill Level: Advanced Beginner and up Class Description: Learn how to make the most of your dyed top purchases and how to manipulate color using drum carders and blending boards in conjunction with spinning and plying techniques. Ombre, gradient, and fractal color combinations will be covered. Student should bring: Students need to bring a working , 3 bobbins along with a lazy kate and should be able to spin a consistent single. Homework: None Material Supply Fee: (paid by students directly to Instructor) $25.00 Instructor Bio: Fiber has played an important role throughout Kathy’s life. A knitter and crocheter since a teen, she worked as a buyer of fabric for Sears and subsequently started her own kiddie apparel business. She has been an Alpaca breeder for the last 20 years. You will find her original designs and indie dyed and fiber at multiple juried art shows in Northern Ohio under the name Alpaca, Kid, and Ewe. She has been an instructor for Stitches magazine events and currently teaches spinning, weaving, and felting at Long Tail Knits in Macedonia, Ohio.

Intarsia Crochet by Cindie Bennett 12:30-3:30 pm Skill Level: Advanced Beginner The student must be comfortable with the following crochet stitches: single crochet, slip knot, slip stitch, and chain. Class Description: You will learn the basics of intarsia crochet, how to use intarsia, read graphs, read a written pattern, properly change colors, and use bobbins. Sunday May 26 Continuous Strand Weaving on a Pin Loom by Ron Phillips 8:30-11:30 am Skill Level: Beginner Class Description: Attendees will assemble 3 different shaped small – a square, rectangle, and triangle – from supplied loom parts. They will create a woven, continuous strand piece on each shape. Student should bring: 30-50 yards of weight yarn. Light color, is easiest for learning. Homework: No homework required. Material Supply Fee: None Instructor Bio: Ron was a product developer for 20 years and has applied that experience to developing and manufacturing a unique pin loom – Totaloom – which can be converted to a variety of shapes and sizes. He has been weaving on a variety of pin looms for about 2 years.

Choose and Process a Handspinning Fleece by Dave Lewis assisted by Diane Schrader 8:30-11:30 am Skill Level: Beginner Class Description: We will provide tips on what to consider when choosing a fleece with the goal of hand processing and hand spinning the fleece. We will have examples of the good, the bad and the ugly. This will include hands on involvement in picking a fleece, skirting the fleece, and washing the fleece. We will also provide instruction on different techniques and an opportunity to practice carding. Students will take home a portion of a washed fleece and some carded . Student should bring: Please wear appropriate clothes and close toed shoes. Working with raw fleece can be dirty, greasy and messy and we will be working with very hot soapy water. Drum carder or hand cards if you have them, a plastic bag or container to take home a portion of a washed fleece, a notebook and pencil or pen to take notes Homework: None Material Supply Fee: (paid by students directly to Instructor) $10.00 Instructor Bio: Diane Schrader and Dave Lewis both have long histories of raising and processing fleece by hand. They have years of experience in turning raw fleece into beautiful soft garments. Diane is in charge of the Great Lakes Fiber Show Wool Show. Dave is the head instructor for the Algonquin Mill Spinners and Weavers and the GLFS Wool Show's Hand Spinning Fleece Judging School.

Bavarian Twisted Stitch Knitting by Geanie Helfrich 8:30-3:30 pm Skill Level: Intermediate and up (Must be able to read charts) Class Description: Learn the ins and outs of this elegant technique from the Southern Germany and Austrian region. You will learn to decipher Bavarian knitting charts and manipulate stitches without a cable needle Student should bring: Notebook and pencil, 100-200g worsted or chunky weight solid color yarn US Size 7 16” circular needle US Size 7 double point needles stitch markers Homework: Students need to go to www.cascadeyarns.com and download the free pattern (A186_BavarianTwistedHat.pdf) Work the lower edge as instructed in pattern. (12 rounds of rib with knit stitches worked through the back loop.) Leave stitches on circular needle. Enlarging the chart is suggested. Rug Hooking by Linda Harwood 8:30-3:30 pm Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate Class Description: This type of hooking consists of pulling strips of wool material through a backing to create a design. This all day class will open up a whole new art form in working with wool and will offer students everything they need to know to begin to hook rugs. You will learn the art of rug hooking including information about backings, hooks, frames, cutters and how to finish their hooked pieces. Student should bring: A small pair of , plus hook and 14” heavy hoop. If a student does not have a hook or a hoop, one will be provided. Homework: None Material Supply Fee: (paid by students directly to Instructor) $35 Instructor Bio: Linda Harwood is self taught in the early American art of rug hooking. Her skill and eye for color have brought commissions both in America and internationally. The themes, texture and color of the rural landscape emerge in her work, influences by her family life on a sheep and cattle farm. “In my hooking I use recycled wool as well as new wool material and over dye the wool for more interest. As a fiber artist Linda has enjoyed sharing her knowledge with others, her work has been seen in magazines, books and on television. Curious Creatures -Needle Felting by Gina Talandis 12:30-3:30 pm Skill Level: Beginner (minimum age 18) Class Description Each student will make at least one small animal that will give students the basic forms and skills that can be used to make all sorts of sculptures out of wool, animals, people, freeform, flowers, etc. There is no wire framework, just wool. This is a great craft for holiday decorations, gifts, and just fun for your imagination. Student should bring: No previous experience required. This class involves very sharp long needles. Minimum age is 18. There can be NO children in the room at any time during the class. It is common to prick your fingers and bleed. I will bring Neosporin and band-aids. This is beginning needle felting. Homework: None Material Supply Fee: (paid by students directly to Instructor) $25.00 Instructor Bio: Gina began weaving over 20 years ago, and has taken up spinning the past few years on wheels or drop spindles. .She started needle felting for fun about 4 years ago.

Beginning Spinning – The Next Steps by Ingrid McMaster 12:30-3:30 pm Skill Level: Advanced Beginner Spinner - Student should understand the concept of drafting and plying and be able to do so. Class Description: Students will learn how to hone their skills in drafting, plying and achieving the yarn they desire for a potential project. We will discuss two-ply and three-ply yarn construction and the impact of twist on knitting and the durability of a fabric. We will discuss grist and yarn weights and why yarn construction can lead to felting or pilling. Student should bring: A wheel in good working condition with three bobbins or rent one, niddy noddy, lazy Kate and hand cards. There will not be time to fix or prepare wheels during the class.
