However, there are some rather critical differences. The following outlines these. Ancient Times In the centuries B.C.E. (Before Common Era), the Celtic peoples populated much of Europe. Although the ancient Celts varied in description, they had a reasonably similar culture. The religion of the Celts in particular helped to unify tradition. The ancient druidic faith held the sum of all the Celt people’s knowledge and laws. The ancient druids generally maintained a neutrality in politics and gained impartiality in as judges of important social matters among the Celtic peoples. It has been said that a druid could stop a battle between warring tribes in these ancient times simply by walking between the armies. None challenged the authority and power of the druids. Coming of the Romans Boudicea, A Bard’s Tale The Romans line every hill, The conquests of Julius Ceasar targeted the druids as the nerve center and unifying force of Spears bright and deadly still, Blood red with silver shields, the Gallic Celts.

1 Cailleach – old woman Altough the Cailleach lives in various mountain homes every year she comes to the Coire Bhreacain (Cauldren of the Plaid) to wash her massive yellow plaid in the swirling waters in order to summon the cold winds as Scotia’s Winter goddess. During archeological excavations in 1880 a figure of an ancient goddess was discovered in the peat bogs of Scotland, a figure who 2,500 years ago stood near the shore of Loch Leven as a symbol of an ancient religion or deity that has now been lost to time. Today she is known as the Ballachulish Woman & is a figure who stands at almost five feet tall & carved from a single piece of alder wood, her eyes are two quartz pebbles which even today, have a remarkable ability to draw the attention to the face of this mysterious relic. Although the identity of the Ballachulish Woman still remains a mystery many have speculated as to who this figure represented, there are some who believe that she is a depiction of a deity known as the Cailleach Bheithir, an ancient goddess of winds & 2 storms, also known as the Winter Hag, who had associations with a nearby mountain called Beinn a’Bheithir. (Hill of the thunderbolt) Another theory is that she could represent a goddess of the straits, this is due to the figures location near the straits where Loch Levan meets the sea, & was a deity that prehistoric travellers would make offerings too in an attempt to secure their safety while travelling dangerous waters.

  • Summer's Crossing
Summer’s Crossing The Iron Fey Julie Kagawa A Midsummer's Nightmare? Robin Goodfellow. Puck. Summer Court prankster, King Oberon's right hand, bane of many a faery queen's existence—and secret friend to Prince Ash of the Winter Court. Until one girl's death came between them, and another girl stole both their hearts. Now Ash has granted one favor too many and someone's come to collect, forcing the prince to a place he cannot go without Puck's help—into the heart of the Summer Court. And Puck faces the ultimate choice—betray Ash and possibly win the girl they both love, or help his former friend turned bitter enemy pull off a deception that no true faery prankster could possibly resist. An ebook exclusive novella from Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series. Chapter One And as I am an Honest Puck Names. What’s in a name, really? I mean, besides a bunch of letters or sounds strung together to make a word. Does a rose by any other name really smell as sweet? Would the most famous love story in the world be as poignant if it was called Romeo and Gertrude? Why is what we call ourselves so important? Heh, sorry, I don’t usually get philosophical. I’ve just been wondering lately. Names are, of course, very important to my kind. Me, I have so many, I can’t even remember them all. None of them are my True Name, of course. No one has ever spoken my real name out loud, not once, despite all the titles and nicknames and myths I’ve collected for myself over the years.

N: A SEA MONSTER OF A RESEARCH PROJECT by Adrian Jay Thomson Capstone submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation with UNIVERSITY HONORS with a major in English- Creative Writing in the Department of English Approved: UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY Logan, UT SPRING2019 Abstract Ever since time and the world began, dwarves have always fought cranes. Ever since ships set out on the northern sea, great sea monsters have risen to prey upon them. Such are the basics of life in medieval and Renaissance Scandinavia , Iceland, Scotland and Greenland, as detailed by Olaus Magnus' Description of the Northern Peoples (1555) , its sea monster -heavy map , the Carta Marina (1539), and Abraham Ortelius' later map of Iceland, Islandia (1590). I first learned of Olaus and Ortelius in the summer of 2013 , and while drawing my own version of their sea monster maps a thought hit me: write a book series , with teenage characters similar to those in How to Train Your Dragon , but set it amongst the lands described by Olaus , in a frozen world badgered by the sea monsters of Ortelius.

  • On the Trail of Scotlands Myths and Legends Free
FREE ON THE TRAIL OF SCOTLANDS MYTHS AND LEGENDS PDF Stuart McHardy | 152 pages | 01 Apr 2005 | LUATH PRESS LTD | 9781842820490 | English | Edinburgh, United Kingdom Myths and legends play a major role in Scotland's culture and history. From before the dawn of history, the early ancestors of the people we now know as the Scots, built impressive monuments which have caught the imagination of those who have followed in their wake. Stone circles, chambered cairns, brochs and vitrified forts stir within us something primeval and stories have been born from their mystical qualities. Scottish myths and legends have drawn their inspiration from many sources. Every land has its tales of dragons, but Scotland is an island country, bound to the sea. Cierein Croin, a gigantic sea serpent is said to be the largest creature ever. Yes, Nessie is classified as a dragon although she may be a member of that legendary species, the each-uisge or water horse. However, the cryptozoologists will swear that she is a leftover plesiosaurus. The Dalriadan Scots shared more than the Gaelic tongue with their trading partners in Ireland. They were great storytellers and had a culture rich in tales of heroes and mythical creatures. Many of the similarities between Irish and Scottish folklore can be accounted for by their common Celtic roots. Tales of Finn On the Trail of Scotlands Myths and Legends Cumhall and his warrior band, the Fianna are as commonplace on the Hebrides as in Ireland. Many of the myths centre around the cycle of nature and the passing of the seasons with the battle between light and darkness, summer and winter.
