Martinus Dwi Marianto July 1995 ABSTRACT Surrealist painting flourished in Yogyakarta around the middle of the 1980s to early 1990s. It became popular amongst art students in Yogyakarta, and formed a significant style of painting which generally is characterised by the use of casual juxtapositions of disparate ideas and subjects resulting in absurd, startling, and sometimes disturbing images. In this thesis, Yogyakartan Surrealism is seen as the expression in painting of various social, cultural, and economic developments taking place rapidly and simultaneously in Yogyakarta's urban landscape. -
Fragility, Aid, and State-Building
Fragility, Aid, and State-building Fragile states pose major development and security challenges. Considerable international resources are therefore devoted to state-building and institutional strengthening in fragile states, with generally mixed results. This volume explores how unpacking the concept of fragility and studying its dimensions and forms can help to build policy-relevant under- standings of how states become more resilient and the role of aid therein. It highlights the particular challenges for donors in dealing with ‘chronically’ (as opposed to ‘temporarily’) fragile states and those with weak legitimacy, as well as how unpacking fragility can provide traction on how to take ‘local context’ into account. Three chapters present new analysis from innovative initiatives to study fragility and fragile state transitions in cross- national perspective. Four chapters offer new focused analysis of selected countries, drawing on comparative methods and spotlighting the role of aid versus historical, institu- tional and other factors. It has become a truism that one-size-fits-all policies do not work in development, whether in fragile or non-fragile states. This should not be confused with a broader rejection of ‘off-the-rack’ policy models that can then be further adjusted in particular situations. Systematic thinking about varieties of fragility helps us to develop this range, drawing lessons – appropriately – from past experience. This book was originally published as a special issue of Third World Quarterly, and is available online as an Open Access monograph. Rachel M. Gisselquist is a political scientist and currently a Research Fellow with UNU-WIDER. She works on the politics of the developing world, with particular attention to ethnic politics and group-based inequality, state fragility, governance and democratiza- tion in sub-Saharan Africa. -

BAB IV PEMBAHASAN A. Gambaran Umum Kraton Yogyakarta 1. Sejarah Kerajaan keraton berasal mula dari Pangeran Mangkubumi yang merupakan anak dari Sunan Amengkurat IV Raja ke-8 Kerajaan Mataram Islam. Pangeran Mangkubumi sangat disayangi oleh Sunan Paku Buwana II atau raja ke-9 Kerajaan Mataram Islam. 1Pangeran Mangkubum di sayangi oleh Sunan Paku Buwana II karena keshalehan, kecerdasan, kearifan dan keahliannya baik dibidang kepemimpinan keprajuritan maupun di bidang bangunan. Hal tersebut menimbulkan keirian dari kakak iparnya atau patih Pringgalaya. Kemudian P. Mangkubumi mendapat hadiah berupa tanah seluas 3000 cacah di Sukawati. 2Karena ke rian hati patih Pringgalaya, dia berusaha untuk menggagalkan hadiah tanah tersebut. Menyerahnya Sunan Paku Buwana II kepada VOC juga membuat hadiah tanah tersebut di tarik kembali oleh Sunan Paku Buwana II. Namun P. Mangkubumi tetap pergi menuju Sukawati bersama keluarga dan pengikutnya pada tanggal 19 Mei 1746. Mulai saat itu P. Mangkubumi melawan VOC( yang di bantu oleh Sunan Paku Buwana II dan III). Dalam masa peperangan tersebut Sunan Paku Buwana menderita sakit, dan di sisi lain P. Harya Mangkunegara mendesak P.Mangkubumi untuk menjadi meduduki tahta menggantikan Sunan Paku Buwana II. Setelah ada perjanjian perdamaian yang sering di sebut Perjanjian Giyanti maka Kerajaan Mataram Islam terpecah menjadi dua yaitu Kasultanan Yogyakarta dan Kasunanan Surakarta. -

About that, aesthetic value and interior space concept will be arranged in an example kind of new in visual forms. The interior space of the Yogyakarta Presidential Palace concept was a development from the interior space concept during the era of Sukarno. This research is based on the aesthetic and historical approach that stressed on the artistic aspects and design that are associated with aesthetic appeal. The study uses a qualitative research method with an interdisciplinary approach that includes historical, social, cultural, and aesthetic approaches by not leaving descriptive aspects and critical analysis of reading sources and field surveys. It is inductive qualitative research because the inductive process is more able to find multiple realities as contained in the data. The analysis was done using observations of form and function, including the meaning of space composition, which was arranged to 1produce a proportionate composition with the art collection object. This research is expected to be a basis for the interior aesthetic of the Yogyakarta Presidential Palace and to contribute to designers in the fields of architecture, fine arts, and especially the interior design. -

THE ROLE OF SULTAN HAMENGKU BUWONO IX IN UPHOLDING INDONESIAN INDEPENDENCE IN 1945-1950 Ony Widiarto1, Sugiyanto2, Marjono3 123History Education Program, The University of Jember. Email: [email protected] Abstract The background of this research is after the Indonesian nation became independent until the change of form of the Indonesian state which was originally since KMB (Konferensi Meja Bundar) is a federal state back into the form of unitary state (1945-1950). Indonesia's chaotic condition in the social, political and economic fields prompted Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX to apply the rescue action of the Republic of Indonesia. This study aims to (1) examine the background of Hamengku Buwono IX in maintaining the independence of the Republic of Indonesia; (2) to examine in depth the actions or strategies of Hamengku Buwono IX in maintaining the independence of the Republic of Indonesia in 1945-1950. This study uses historical research methods with heuristic steps, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX retained the independence of the Republic of Indonesia, preventing the Dutch crime in Jakarta, which moved the capital in Yogyakarta. When the capital of Yogyakarta in the attack of Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX, became a savior and dared to arrange a counterattack. Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX accelerated the process of recognition of Indonesian independence. However, a new problem arose in the form of Westerling insurrection and Sultan Hamid II. Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX managed to prevent and make people not believe in the federalists. This is what makes the return of the state form into a unitary state. Southeast Asian Journal of Social and Political Issues, Vol. 1, No. 2, March 2012 | 126 Back in Asia: the US’s TPP Initiative and its Implications for China Zhang Zhen-Jiang 张振江 (Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China) Abstract Trans-Pacific Partnership develops from the Pacific Three Closer Economic Partnership (P3-CEP) initiated by Chile, Singapore and New Zealand in 2002 and joined by Brunei in 2005. The four countries finally finished their talks and singed the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement (P4) on June 3rd, 2005. American President George W. Bush announced that the US would join TPP in late 2008. It was suspended by new American President Barrack Obama for his trade policy review. However, the US government restarted its joining efforts in late 2009 and was quickly joined by several other countries. This paper aims to investigate the origin, nature and development of TPP, analyze America’s motivations, and study its possible impacts upon the East Asian Regionalism in general and upon China in particular. Finally, the author calls for China to take the active policy to join the TPP negotiating process. Indonesian Historiography in the New Order (274 pp.) Director of Thesis: William H. Frederick This thesis discusses one central problem: What happened to Indonesian historiography in the New Order (1966-98)? To analyze the problem, the author studies the connections between the major themes in his intellectual autobiography and those in the metahistory of the regime. Proceeding in chronological and thematic manner, the thesis comes in three parts. Part One presents the author’s intellectual autobiography, which illustrates how, as a member of the generation of people who grew up in the New Order, he came into contact with history. Part Two examines the genealogy of and the major issues at stake in the post-New Order controversy over the rectification of history. Part Three ends with several concluding observations. First, the historiographical engineering that the New Order committed was not effective. Second, the regime created the tools for people to criticize itself, which shows that it misunderstood its own society. Third, Indonesian contemporary culture is such that people abhor the idea that there is no single truth. -

chapter 6 The Managers of Social Engineering Abstract This chapter discusses the implementation of scientific management theories in the context of the Guided Democracy’s revolutionary effort to remake the Indonesian per- son. Studies into the administrative problems in the early 1950s has pointed out the cultural problem of administration. Classes on such themes as leadership strength- ened the idea of a cultural pathology rooted in feudal Indonesian culture. Instead, an idealized image of the village with its corporatist values of gotong royong became one of the mainstay in the discussion of Indonesian administration. This would translate in the creation of a series of institution meant to discipline the civil service and wid- er population. Indoctrination courses, surveillance and retooling were the means to which the behavioral problem of the Indonesian man could be rationalized so as to support development. The support for this behavioral indoctrination came from both scientific management and Indonesian ideas of traditional corporatism. The concept of discipline was bifurcated within the divide between the experts and the rest. Thus, Indonesian behavioral discipline was often a form of re- traditionalization allowing for the expert to take on the authority of tradition. This again highlights the ease with which scientific management was reincarnated to support an Indonesian corporative order that was illiberal and undemocratic. The policymakers at the national level assumed that the problem of corruption was the Indonesian Man himself be- cause he was, in their eyes, incapable, inefficient, and corrupt.
