Sharifzoda1 RUSSIAN FOREIGN POLICY TOWARDS BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA IN 1992-2019 This article is devoted to analyzing the Kremlin's foreign policy in the post-Yugoslav space by the case of Russia's foreign policy towards Bosnia and Herzegovina. An analysis of Russia's foreign policy towards Bosnia and Herzegovina will help to identify the strengths and weaknesses of Russia's foreign policy towards the post-Yugoslav countries. In addition, the author, examining the Russian-Bosnian relations during the last 27 years, tries to show the foreign policy of the superpower towards quasi-confederation and determine the place of Russia in the Western Balkans. Special attention is paid in the article to relations between Russia and the Republika Srpska which is against the entry of BiH to NATO. The close relations of Republika Srpska with Russia contradict the plans of the USA, which want to see BiH in NATO. Since the 1990s, the US has been trying to oust Russia from the Western Balkans. However, Russia demonstrates an aspiration to prevent the entry of BiH to NATO and supports the policy of Republika Srpska. JEL Classification: F59. It has been a long journey to this place, and it would not have been possible without the contributions of many key people. First, I need to thank my supervisors Jan Klabbers and Jarna Petman. Throughout the years, their invaluable comments have made me a better legal and academic writer. They have always been ready to read my texts, listen to my ideas, and to write all those recommendation letters. My humblest of thanks to both of you, dear supervisors! Next in line is my ‘unofficial supervisor’ Lauri Hannikainen, with whom I shared an office at the Erik Castrén Institute (ECI) for most of the years I was working with the PhD. Lauri has contributed greatly to my work and his influence is certainly reflected in this dissertation. In addition, as we share many common research interests, it has been a great pleasure to cooperate with him on several common projects. Thank you for all these years, Lauri! I was honored to have James Summers to agree to act as an opponent in the public examination on 1 August.

JWAC Lesson Plan Moldova vs. Transnistria: Language as an Identity By: Josh Meaders, March 2018 Warm up: Have you heard of Moldova? Where is Moldova located? What do you know about the history of Moldova? What do you know about Transnistria? Fast Facts: Moldova boasts the Guinness World Record for the largest wine cellar in the world, holding 1.5 million bottles of wine Moldova is home to archaeological sites that date back over 1.2 million years Moldova has some of the fastest internet speeds, ranking third in the world in 2014 Transnistria is a breakaway state that is recognized by 3 other entities, all of which are also breakaway states Moldova and Transnistria are home to the largest radioactive material black market Discussion: Like many other Post-Soviet Republics in Eastern Europe, Moldova gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Following independence, a string of events occurred which led to the Transnistria War, all of which stemmed from the fact that Moldova is a multiethnic country. During the times of the Soviet Union, the population of ethnically Russian and Ukrainian citizens rose in Moldova due to migration within the Soviet Union. This forced migration and focus on the Russian language education during the Soviet Union has led to issues since the fall of the Soviet Union, specifically language identity. There are two main languages spoken in Moldova: Russian and Moldovan (Romanian). Case Study: The Transnistria War Background: Following the breakup of the Soviet Union, Transnistrian rebels, backed by Russia, and Moldovan forces, backed by Romania, engaged in a bloody four-month civil war over the status of the eastern region of Transnistria.

ALEJANDRO SANCHEZ, JAN 9 2013 On August 27, 2012 the Republic of Moldova celebrated its independence from the Soviet Union. However, sovereignty has not been easy. The landlocked nation is a peripheral, underdeveloped European country with a high rate of poverty. In addition, secessionists fought a short-lived war against the government in 1992 and managed to create an autonomous region in the country, known as Transnistria. [1] The status quo between Chisinau (Moldova’s capital) and Tiraspol (Transnistria’s capital) has remained essentially unchanged since then, earning the label of a “frozen conflict.”[2] While not much may have changed domestically in Moldova in the last two decades regarding Transnistria’s status, there have certainly been changes in European geo-politics, particularly regarding the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). NATO’s strategy was altered following the dissolution of the USSR, the Alliance’s nemesis and raison d’être, which signaled the end of the Cold War. The Alliance’s strategy further shifted over the past decade, this time with a focus on battling transnational terrorist movements, such as Al Qaeda, following the 9/11 attacks against the U.S.( and other high-profile attacks like the bombings in Madrid in March 2004 and in London in July 2005).[3] It is in this evolving reality that Moldova emerges as an interesting case study regarding the Alliance’s future when it comes to issues such as enlargement, geopolitical interests and relations with Russia.
