Slovenia Have Been Remarkable
Mrak/Rojec/Silva-Jáur lovenia’s achievements over the past several years Slovenia have been remarkable. Thirteen years after Public Disclosure Authorized independence from the former Socialist Federative egui Republic of Yugoslavia, the country is among the most advanced of all the transition economies in Central and Eastern Europe and a leading candidate for accession to the European Union Sin May 2004. Remarkably, however, very little has been published Slovenia documenting this historic transition. Highly Efficient Nuclear DNA Typing of the World War II Skeletal Remains
FORENSIC SCIENCE 17 doi: 10.3325/cmj.2012.53.17 Highly efficient nuclear DNA Irena Zupanič Pajnič, Barbara Gornjak Pogorelc, typing of the World War II Jože Balažic, Tomaž skeletal remains using three Zupanc, Borut Štefanič Institute of Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of new autosomal short tandem Ljubljana repeat amplification kits with the extended European Standard Set of loci Aim To perform an efficiency study of three new amplifi- cation kits with the extended European Standard Set (ESS) of loci for autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) typing of skeletal remains excavated from the World War II mass graves in Slovenia. Methods In the beginning of the 2011, we analyzed 102 bones and teeth using the PowerPlex ESX 17 System (Pro- mega), AmpFiSTR NGM PCR Amplification Kit (Applied Bio- systems), and Investigator ESSplex Kit (Qiagen). We cleaned the bones and teeth, removed surface contamination, and ground them into a powder using liquid nitrogen. Prior to DNA isolation with Biorobot EZ1 (Qiagen), 0.5 g bone or tooth powder was decalcified. Nuclear DNA of the samples was quantified using real-time polymerase chain reaction. All three kits used the same extract with the amplification conditions recommended by the manufacturers. Results We extracted up to 131 ng DNA/g of powder from the bones and teeth. All three amplification kits showed very similar efficiency, since DNA typing was success- ful with all amplification kits in 101 out of 102 bones and teeth, which represents a 99% success rate. Conclusion The commercially available ESX 17, ESSplex, and NGM kits are highly reliable for STR typing of World Received: August 26, 2011 War II skeletal remains with the DNA extraction method optimized in our laboratory. -

Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2018/2019 Ljubljana Cup 2018 October 3 to October 6, 2018 Ljubljana, Slovenia INFORMATION Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2018/2019 Ljubljana Cup 2018, Ljubljana / SLO, 3.10. – 6.10.2018 WELCOME It is a great honor for Slovene Skating Union to host again one of the competitions of ISU Junior Grand Prix. Ljubljana, the Slovene capital, is after two years once more the host of this event. We cordially welcome all the skaters, coaches, judges, officials and the team members from all over the world. THE AREA – THE CITY LJUBLJANA BASICS The capital of the Republic of Slovenia, a European Union member state since 2004 Area: 275 km2 Population: 283,000 Average temperature in January: - 0.3 °C Average temperature in June: 20.7 °C Temperature in the beginning of October: low 10, high 21°C (photo: panoramic view of the city with the castle) HISTORY Legend has it that Ljubljana was founded by the Greek mythological hero Jason and his companions, the Argonauts, who had stolen the Golden Fleece from King Aetes and fled from him across the Black Sea and up the Danube, Sava and Ljubljanica rivers. At a large lake in the marshes near the source of the Ljubljanica they stopped and disassembled their ship to be able to carry it to the Adriatic Sea, put it together again, and return to Greece. The lake was the dwelling place of a monster, which Jason fought, defeated and killed. The monster, now referred to as the Ljubljana Dragon, found its place atop the castle tower depicted on the Ljubljana coat of arms. -
