164. Thomas Bowne, born Unknown; died Unknown. He was the son of 328. Anthony Bowne. He married 165. Mary ??? Unknown. 165. Mary ???, born Unknown; died Unknown.

Child of Thomas Bowne and Mary ??? is: 82 i. John Bowne, born May 09, 1627 in Matlock, Derbyshire, England; died December 20, 1695 in Flushing, Long Island, NY; married Hannah Feake May 07, 1656 in Flushing, NY.

166. Robert Feake, born Abt. 1602 in London, England; died February 01, 1660/61 in Watertown, Mass. Bay Colony. He was the son of 332. James Feake and 333. Judith Thomas. He married 167. Elizabeth Fones January 27, 1631/32 in Boston, Mass.. 167. Elizabeth Fones, born January 21, 1609/10 in Groton,Suffolk Co.,England; died Abt. 1668 in Newtown, LI,NY. She was the daughter of 334. Thomas Fones and 335. Anne Winthrop.

Notes for Robert Feake: Robert Feake was apprenticed to his father, a goldsmith, for a term of 8 years on Sept. 21, 1615. He came to Massachusetts Bay in the in 1630, and settled that year in Watertown, Mass., he was made a freeman May 18, 1631 and was appointed Lieutenant under Captain Daniel Patrick on Sept. 4, 1632. He served as a representative to the general court from 1634 to 1636. He served Watertown as a selectman from 1637 to 1640. Robert was one of the original signers of the covenant of Dedham, Mass., having been present for 4 council meetings between 1636 and 1637, he sold his lands there for 20 marks in 1638, and in 1640 he was one of the purchasers of Greenwich (now in ). This purchase was made under authority granted by the New Haven Colony but was disputed by William Kieft, Director General of the New Netherlands, which claimed jurisdiction on Oct. 15, 1640. On April 9, 1642, he sought protection from the Dutch against the Indians, and this was needed until an Anglo- Dutch force under the leadership of was victorious in Feb. of 1644. During or shortly after 1644 he left for England under circumstances which are not known. What followed has been the subject of much speculation and one novel, "Anya Seton's THE WINTHROP WOMEN (1958)". When he left he asked his friend William Hallett to care for his family and his property. Whether his family believed he was lost at sea, or

5 whether the Dutch authorities granted a divorce, by May of 1647, on grounds of Mrs. Feake's alleged Adultery with William Hallett, is not precisely clear. It is possible that Lt. Feake was imprisoned in England for a Robert Feake was granted a pardon by the house of commons on May 4, 1649, Apparently, however, he was in America on Sept. 18,1649. Nonetheless, in Feb of 1649 his wife mentioned settlement of his estate in a letter to , Jr. By April 14 1648, Elizabeth was pregnant, and claimed to be William Hallett's wife. Although the Dutch had referred to Robert as her former husband as early as May 1647, in a way which indicated there had been a divorce they had no proof of marriage and thus Hallett was ordered to leave the New Netherlands. William and Elizabeth then went to new haven and Pequst (now new London), and attempted to marry there. A Connecticut warrant was issued for their arrest on May 17,1649, on the charge they were living in sin, their child William having been born, yet she wrote a letter from Greenwich on Aug 6, 1649 to her brother-in-law John Winthrop, Jr., who had served as the first Governor of Connecticut, which began, "Dear Brother, All the love and service and thankfulness I am able to express is next unto god dew unto yourself as the instrument of my present well being". This was the first letter from her which Winthrop, who filed correspondence very carefully, endorsed as from "Mrs. Hallett". Thus it seems that perhaps the Connecticut officials had warned the former governor of the warrant for his sister-in-law and that Winthrop married the couple so they could return to the Dutch Colony, where their marriage would satisfy the authorities. Puritans were Pragmatists. On Nov. 25 1650, the Halletts sold their rights in lands in Greenwich, New Netherlands which had been granted to Daniel Patrick and Robert Feake, to Jefferey Ferris for 3.10 pounds. They had a second son, Samuel, born in 1652. Hallett later served as sheriff of Flushing, NY and died in Hells Gate, NY in 1668. Robert Feake was declared insane and spent the last years of his life being cared for by Samuel Thacher at the expense of the town (Watertown, Mass.) When he died, his estate, inventoried at 9.9 pounds, went to pay for some of the expense of his care.

Notes for Elizabeth Fones: Elizabeth Fones arrived in Massachusetts Bay on the "Lyon" November 2, 1631. She was the widow of , who had been a planter in Barbados in 1627-1628 and drowned while swimming across the Salem River July 2, 1630, the day after he arrived in America on board the "Talbot". John Winthrop made an entry in his journal dated Jan. 27,1631/32 referring to Robert Feake as the "husband of his daughter-in-law" while describing a trip to the north of Watertown Mass, during which Mt. Feake (in present day Waltham) was named for him.
