6 7 STRENGTHS OF THE PROVINCE OF ALICANTE THE PRESIDENT’S PRESENTATION

The strengths that create a unique province

INECA began its work in 2008 at a difficult, complex juncture for the province of This overall vision enables us to have greater functional and regional cohesion Alicante. During this time, we have discovered a province, Alicante, of unique and connectivity, to enhance the internal and external synergies and reinforce the value, but one that needs to become more aware of its own strengths, of what strategic planning of investments from a more inclusive and equitable regional makes us unique and different and of the reasons for our resilience. perspective.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members for their trust and This vision, once embodied in a MISSION, is indispensable to identify us as an dedication to this ambitious project. It would not have been possible without attractive province for investment with a powerful, diversified and sustainable them and their altruistic support and generous enthusiasm for serving the economic driving force and a population well prepared to compete on the global community. stage. This study enables us to obtain an overall vision of the province of Alicante while emphasising the uniqueness of each of its component districts whose I would also like to mention the special collaboration of the members of JOVEMPA strengths, working together, will enable us to raise our international profile. Finally, FEDERACIÓN (Young Entrepreneurs Association of the province of Alicante) we have identified and compared the significant economic, business, social, during this process. Finally, special thanks are due to the Provincial Council of Alicante, Caja These, and many more, are the reasons we have worked to achieve an overall Rural Central and Hidraqua for their support, without which this project would not vision. have seen the light. And this is undoubtedly one of INECA’s missions: to ensure that our work helps All these bodies _and many more whose contribution we acknowledge in the to disseminate the values of our province and its districts. credits_ helped to design and draw up a study which, in addition to data, provides perceptions that enable us to identify the DNA of a rich, plural and diverse Rafael Ballester Cecilia province. During the creation process we discovered that we do not know much President of INECA about ourselves, and that others know even less about us. We have discovered that we must adopt an OVERALL VISION and strengthen the SELF-ESTEEM of our companies, institutions and citizens.

8 9 STRENGTHS OF THE PROVINCE OF ALICANTE THE PROVINCE OF ALICANTE IN FIGURES

The poly-centric and multi-sectoral nature of the province of Alicante is an example _unique in the EU_of balance, cohesion and territorial diversity. THE PROVINCE OF 01 ALICANTE IN FIGURES

This work aims to show the real position and importance of the Province of Alicante in Spain, and the World. Although we analyse a very large number of socio-economic variables in our reports on the current trends, this time we want to focus exclusively on the strengths of the province of Alicante that we have been building together.

This prominent position on the national scene is the direct result of the work and sacrifice of the companies, their business leaders and workers and other local institutions. There is a promising future within our reach, but to grasp it we must not rest on our laurels but continue to work hard so that coming generations continue to enjoy this outstanding position.

The province of Alicante has 1,862,798 inhabitants distributed across its 141 municipal districts (National Statistics Institute [INE], 1 January 2019). However, the really important characteristic is the special way this population is distributed, since the province has a large number of small , various medium-size cities and two metropolises: and Alicante. There are few demographic distributions with these characteristics in Spain.

A closer look reveals that the province has 115 towns with less than 20,000 inhabitants, but which account for 21.6% of the total population. The eighteen cities with populations of between 20,000 and 50,000 inhabitants are home to another 26.3% of the total. The next range is composed of six cities that account for 21.5% of the province’s inhabitants. And finally, the two metropolises with more than 100,000 inhabitants: Elche is home to more than 230,000 people or TOTAL 12.5% of the total population and Alicante, the provincial capital, more than 330,000 or 18% of the total. 1,862,798

There is an extremely extensive list of companies in each economic activity and they all contribute to creating wealth. Furthermore, many are well known outside the province and even on the international scene. The ideal would be to name E them all, but in the following section we will limit ourselves to naming those which, in their productive sector, make the greatest contribution to the provincial GDP. Along with them there are many others with leading positions in their sectors, but the aim of this table is not to rank them, but to provide a sample of 0 the diversity within Alicante’s productive fabric. 2 1

The following method was applied to conduct the detailed study of the districts and their activities: the information available in late 2018 in the Iberian Balance Sheet Analysis System (SABI) database, which is fed by data from the Registry of Companies, was obtained for each of the nine districts and the seven activities with the highest number of employees. This resulted in a total of twenty-one activities for the province of Alicante as a whole.

The explanation of the distribution of added value by district and activity is similar to that of employment, although in this case the differences are more marked and strengthen the predominance of the territories with greater productivity in a given economic activity. Thus, generation of wealth by agriculture in the province is mainly concentrated in the Baix Segura, while industry is the principle source of added value in l’Alcoià, Comtat and the Vinalopó districts, some of which are highly specialised in certain industrial activities. Construction activity accounts for a significant proportion of wealth generation in Baix Segura and Marina Alta but is less important in Marina Baixa and Baix Vinalopó and finally, the services sector _including both wholesale and retail trade, tourism and transport_ is especially relevant to the five districts bathed by the .

The following figures show the details of the main activities performed in each district with a list of the percentage that each activity represents of the total for the twenty-one selected activities. The same breakdown is also given for the added value generated in each district.

Understandably, they are mostly located on or near the coast. Five of Alicante’s municipal districts are also in the top-ten nationwide for second homes: Torrevieja, Alicante, Orihuela, Benidorm and Santa Pola. Furthermore, these extraordinary figures are not the result of purely “sun and sand” tourism. The extraordinary capacity of the province in second homes generated more than 8.2 million tourists and 74 million overnight stays in 2018. Domestic tourists are the majority in this type of accommodation _5 million visitors from other Spanish regions compared to 3.2 million foreign tourists stay in second residences_. This means that the total number of overnight stays by foreigners is considerably higher: 47 million foreign visitors compared to 27.3 million Spanish tourists.
