Japan considering vaccine passports to ease international travel. Sweden planning to charge additional take off/landing fees for more polluting aircraft. Turkey reports foreign visitor arrival numbers for March: overall 59% down on 2019 but Russian visitors were 58% up on 2019. UK CAA states that it has issued more than 630 fines since February to airlines carrying passengers without the right documents (fines start at £2,000); states that the High Court has supported its view that the Ryanair pilots’ strike in 2018 did not constitute extraordinary circumstances and that passengers were protected.
Airbus and Lufthansa Technik offer a reversible cargo-in-cabin solution for the A330 with Finnair as the first customer. Airbus reported 125 deliveries and 39 new orders in Q1 2021 but cancellations resulted in net orders of -61; net loss was €362 million. Boeing reports an operating loss of $83 million and a net loss of $561 million for Q1; completes transition of 787 final assembly to South Carolina; expects delivery of first 777X in late 2023; confirms it is halting 737 MAX deliveries as a result of the electrical grounding issue. Embraer reported a net loss of $96 million for Q1 and deliveries of9 commercial jets and13 executive jets.

USA Bookings are improving on rising vaccination rates and easing travel restrictions, but some higher-quality traffic will lag—so revenue and financial recovery will lag. On 4 May, US passenger airline departures were 32% below 2019 levels with domestic down 31% and international down 42%. The domestic US load factor has improved recently, averaging at 75% on 4 May vs 85% in same week of 2019. Volumes are recovering faster than fares, with airfares 29% below pre- pandemic levels.

Atlanta Airport reports 4.6 million passengers in March, 0.1% up on March 2020. Heathrow Airport reports a pre-tax £307 million loss in Q1, with only1.7 million passengers, down 91% compared to Q1 2019; 86 slots allocated to Flybe, for operations to Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Manchester Airport announces the topping out of two new hotels – a £45 million project which started in January 2020 and with the hotels scheduled to open in early 2022. Rimini Airport – ENAV introduces RNP satellite-based approach procedures which will increase capacity during, for example, poor weather. Tijuana Airport April passenger numbers 7.1% up on 2019 (domestic +15.5%, international – 10.7%).

The evolution of the segments is now almost getting back to pre- Easter trends. On 5 May 2021, compared to 2019: All-cargo is the only segment above 2019 levels with +15%.. Biz Aviation decreased to -15%. Charter decreased to -29%. Traditional remained very stable, declining by -69%. After a minor blip over Easter, Low-Cost remains the most affected segment decreasing by -85% vs 2019.
SUPPORTING EUROPEAN AVIATION 20 Vaccination updates
By 3 May, Israel, Monaco, Malta, UK, Serbia and Hungary have reported that more than 25 people (per 100 people) were fully vaccinated (i.e. have received 2 doses of the main vaccines). Most of other Member States of EUROCONTROL are around 9 fully vaccinated people (per 100 people).

Jet fuel prices have started to rise since last Autumn, from around 100 cts/gal in October 2021 to 170 cts/gal early March and have stabilized since then, amounting to 167 cts/gal on 30 April 2021.
The jet fuel prices are now 20 cents per gallon below pre-COVID levels.
