Morley for the degree of Master ofArts in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program: Asian Studies to be taken June 2009 Title: THE GODDESSES' SHRINE FAMILY: THE MUNAKATA THROUGH THE KAMAKURA ERA This thesis presents an historical study ofthe Kyushu shrine family known as the Munakata, beginning in the fourth century and ending with the onset ofJapan's medieval age in the fourteenth century. The tutelary deities ofthe Munakata Shrine are held to be the progeny ofthe Sun Goddess, the most powerful deity in the Shinto pantheon; this fact speaks to the long-standing historical relationship the Munakata enjoyed with Japan's ruling elites. Traditional tropes ofJapanese history have generally cast Kyushu as the periphery ofJapanese civilization, but in light ofrecent scholarship, this view has become untenable. Drawing upon extensive primary source material, this thesis will provide a detailed narrative ofMunakata family history while also building upon current trends in Japanese historiography that locate Kyushu within a broader East Asian cultural matrix and reveal it to be a central locus of cultural production on the Japanese archipelago. -

The Creation of the Term Kojin (Individual)
The Creation of the Term Kojin (Individual) Saitō Tsuyoshi The term kojin 個人 (individual)—meaning that element which gives form to the opposition between state and society, the person who enjoys a freedom and independence that allows for no intrusion by others or state power, and the subject of free and equal rights, among other things—took shape extraor- dinarily late. So far as I have been able to determine, the term kojin was coined to correspond to the European word “individual” in 1884 (Meiji 17). The fact that the word shakai 社會 (society), as I have discussed elsewhere,1 was first employed in the sense that it is presently used in 1875 (Meiji 8) means that 1884 is really quite late. However, kojin and shakai as concepts must have been born in the same period. Before kojin as a word emerged, there is little doubt that kojin as a concept [even if there was no specific word to articulate it] would surely have existed. When I looked for the words that express the concept of kojin, words with which intellectuals from the late-Edo period [1600–1867] through early Meiji [1868–1912] were experimenting, I learned of the long, painful road traveled by them until they struck upon this simple term. This was also something of a major shock. 1 Translation Equivalents for kojin through the Meiji Era The first Japanese translation given to correspond to “individual” or its equivalent in European languages appears to have been a word matched to the Dutch term individueel. The first head of the Bansho shirabesho 蕃書調 所 (Institute of barbarian books) was a man by the name of Koga Masaru 古賀增 (Kin’ichirō 謹一郎, Chakei 茶溪, 1816–1884). -

Creating Heresy: (Mis)representation, Fabrication, and the Tachikawa-ryū Takuya Hino Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Takuya Hino All rights reserved ABSTRACT Creating Heresy: (Mis)representation, Fabrication, and the Tachikawa-ryū Takuya Hino In this dissertation I provide a detailed analysis of the role played by the Tachikawa-ryū in the development of Japanese esoteric Buddhist doctrine during the medieval period (900-1200). In doing so, I seek to challenge currently held, inaccurate views of the role played by this tradition in the history of Japanese esoteric Buddhism and Japanese religion more generally. The Tachikawa-ryū, which has yet to receive sustained attention in English-language scholarship, began in the twelfth century and later came to be denounced as heretical by mainstream Buddhist institutions. The project will be divided into four sections: three of these will each focus on a different chronological stage in the development of the Tachikawa-ryū, while the introduction will address the portrayal of this tradition in twentieth-century scholarship. Fowler Date Approved: 5 October 2018 ii Abstract This dissertation investigates a sculptural group of Enma and his entourage that was once enshrined in an Enma hall located within the Kyoto temple Rokuharamitsuji precinct, and hopes to highlight the role that significant yet understudied sculptures played in the development of the cult of Enma and the Ten Kings in premodern Japan. Rokuharamitsuji is of great importance to study the cult of Enma and the Ten Kings not only for its rare early sculptures of Enma and his two assistants created in the thirteenth century when the cult began to flourish in Japan, but also for the later addition of a seventeenth-century Datsueba sculpture, which reveals the evolution of the cult through its incorporation of Japanese popular belief. This study examines how the Rokuharamitsuji sculptural group presented images of hell within a designated space and conveyed messages of salvation to their beholders, responding to the environs of the salvation- oriented temple. -

Encyclopedia of Shinto Chronological Supplement 『神道事典』巻末年表、英語版 Institute for Japanese Culture and Classics Kokugakuin University 2016 Preface This book is a translation of the chronology that appended Shinto jiten, which was compiled and edited by the Institute for Japanese Culture and Classics, Kokugakuin University. That volume was first published in 1994, with a revised compact edition published in 1999. The main text of Shinto jiten is translated into English and publicly available in its entirety at the Kokugakuin University website as "The Encyclopedia of Shinto" (EOS). This English edition of the chronology is based on the one that appeared in the revised version of the Jiten. It is already available online, but it is also being published in book form in hopes of facilitating its use. The original Japanese-language chronology was produced by Inoue Nobutaka and Namiki Kazuko. The English translation was prepared by Carl Freire, with assistance from Kobori Keiko. Translation and publication of the chronology was carried out as part of the "Digital Museum Operation and Development for Educational Purposes" project of the Institute for Japanese Culture and Classics, Organization for the Advancement of Research and Development, Kokugakuin University. Jingi Kōshiki a Neglected Field of Study
Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 43/1: 153–175 © 2016 Nanzan Institute for Religion and Culture http://dx.doi.org/10.18874/jjrs.43.1.2016.153-175 Niels Guelberg Jingi kōshiki A Neglected Field of Study One-sixth of the known works of the kōshiki genre belong to the category of jingi kōshiki, which make non-Buddhist divinities their central objects of wor- ship and thereby integrate them into Buddhist doctrine and practice. Appear- ing 210 years after the first works of the genre were composed, this subgenre is not one of the oldest, but it is the category that contains the greatest number of works, a fact that makes this group extremely important for an understanding of the genre of kōshiki as a whole. Nevertheless, the study of jingi kōshiki has remained the most neglected field of research among those related to kōshiki. This article examines specific problems faced when attempting to grasp the character of jingi kōshiki, while maintaining a steady focus on the development of the genre as a whole. keywords: Buddhist rites—kōshiki—honji suijaku—Meiji—shinbutsu bunri Niels Guelberg is a Professor at the School of Law, Waseda University. 153 ingi kōshiki 神祇講式 comprise one of the four major varieties of kōshiki 講式 in addition to those for buddhas—kōshiki about bodhisattvas (62 works), devas (56 works), jingi 神祇 (64 works), and patriarchs (52 works)— Jthat together account for more than 60 percent of the entire corpus. Jingi kōshiki, kōshiki dealing with divinities, are part of a Buddhist tradition also found in other regional manifestations of Buddhism that attempts to integrate non-Buddhist elements into Buddhist doctrine and practice.
