Internationalisering Frans Rip Het bestuur van Geo Informatie Nederland (GIN) drong er al een tijdje op aan om een nummer van Geo-Info te wijden aan internationalisering. Dat is er nu. Waarom wilde het GIN-bestuur dat? Om erachter te komen hoe het ermee staat in het Nederlandse geo-domein? Of om aan bepaalde geo-sectoren te laten weten hoe geïnternationaliseerd sommige andere geo-sectoren al zijn? Misschien wel allebei. Wat is dat eigenlijk, internationalisering? Daar moet je als redactie wel een beeld van hebben om auteurs om een artikel te kunnen vragen. Onze invulling was deze: internationalisering is een invloed met een richting. Dat kan zijn vanuit het buitenland naar Nederland, of vanuit Nederland naar het buitenland. Die invloed wordt zichtbaar in vier aspecten van het dagelijkse geo-werk: producten, standaarden, kennis en de organisatie van werk. Een voorbeeld van elk, met als richting van buiten naar binnen: we gebruiken vooral buitenlandse geo-software, het volgen van de Europese INSPIRE-standaarden, het inhuren van buitenlandse hoogleraren en het doen van klussen voor buitenlandse opdrachtgevers (zoals het organiseren van een conferentie). Voorbeelden van de beïnvloedingsrichting van Nederland naar buiten zijn: de ILWIS-software, kadastrale landregistratie en uitbesteding van productiewerk (zoals digitaliseren) naar lagelonenlanden. De hier bijeengebrachte artikelen kun je zien als ansichtkaarten, als plaatjes uit de praktijk van de internationalisering in het Nederlandse geo-domein. Zo is er naast de verhalen over geo-design, INSPIRE en EuroGeographics een aantal bijdragen van leden van GeoBusiness Nederland en ook vanuit onderwijsinstellingen. De plaatjes tonen niet het hele landschap. Internationalisering bij de geo-afdelingen van gemeentes, waterschappen en provincies blijft buiten beeld. Dat kan aan de beperkingen van onze redactie liggen. Of aan de aard van het werk van die organisaties. In hoeverre is dit tijdschrift eigenlijk zelf geïnternationaliseerd? Dat is een makkelijke vraag. Een poosje terug heeft de redactie besloten geen grote artikelen in andere talen dan Nederlands op te nemen. Soms hebben we een Vlaamse auteur. Dat zijn al twee aanwijzingen. En hoewel er best wat buitenland in onze artikelen voorkomt, is dit themanummer over internationalisering een uitzondering, juist omdat het een themanummer is. Geo-Info is gewoon Nederlands, net zoals GIN een Nederlandse vereniging is. The Romans were indifferent to mathematical geography, with its system of latitudes and longitudes, its astronomical measurements, and its problem of projections. What they wanted was a practical map to be used for military and administrative purposes. Disregarding the elaborate projections of the Greeks, they reverted to the old disk map of the Ionian geographers as being better adapted to their purposes. Within this round frame the Roman cartographers placed the Orbis Terrarum, the circuit of the world. There are only scanty records of Roman maps of the Republic. The earliest of which we hear, the Sardinia map of 174 B.C., clearly had a strong pictorial element. But there is some evidence that, as we should expect from a land-based and, at that time, well advanced agricultural people, subsequent mapping development before Julius Caesar was dominated by land survey; the earliest recorded Roman survey map is as early as 167-164 B.C. If land survey did play such an important part, then these plans, being based on centuriation requirements and therefore square or rectangular, may have influenced the shape of smaller-scale maps. This shape was also one that suited the Roman habit of placing a large map on a wall of a temple or colonnade. Varro (116-27 B.C.) in his De re rustica, published in 37 B.C., introduces the speakers meeting at the temple of Mother Earth [Tellus] as they look at Italiam pictam [Italy painted].

    Roman Roads to Prosperity: Persistence and Non-Persistence of Public Goods Provision CARL-JOHAN DALGAARD NICOLAI KAARSEN OLA OLSSON PABLO SELAYA August 14, 2020 Abstract How persistent is the provision of public goods? We explore the link between infrastructure investments made during antiquity and the presence of infrastruc- ture today, as well as the link between early infrastructure and economic activity both in the past and in the present. We examine the entire area under domin- ion of the Roman Empire at the zenith of its geographical extension (117 CE), and find a remarkable pattern of persistence showing that greater Roman road density goes along with (a) greater modern road density, (b) greater settlement formation in 500 CE, and (c) greater economic activity in 2010. Exploiting a natural experi- ment, we find that the degree of persistence in road density and the link between early road density and contemporary economic development are weakened to the point of insignificance in areas where the use of wheeled vehicles was abandoned from the first millennium CE until the late modern p e r iod. Exploring further rea- sons behind our results, we identify the emergence of market towns from the early medieval period to the modern era as a robust and economically meaningful mech- anism sustaining the persistent effects of the Roman roads network. Overall, our results suggest that infrastructure may be one important channel through which persistence in comparative development comes about. Bilimsel çalışmalarla yeni yeni gün yüzüne çıkan Pisidia Bölgesi araştırılması gereken çok fazla sorulara sahiptir. Bu sorulardan biri bölge genelinde yol sisteminin gelişimi ve bu sistemin uygarlıklar tarafından ne amaçlarla kullanıldığı olmuştur. Tezin ortaya çıkmasında etkin olan bu soru çok geniş bir dönemi kapsayacağından, bölgede planlı yol sistemi olarak inşa edilmiş olan Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi yol ağları incelenmiştir. Askeri amaç güden bu yolların aynı zamanda ticari olarak da önemli oldukları ve bölge ekonomisinde üstlendiği kritik rolün ve kültürel anlamda bölgeye kattıklarının ele alınması amaçlanmıştır. “Pisidia Bölgesi Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi Yolları” bölgenin yol sistemlerini kara yollarının açıklanmasına yönelik yapılmış bir çalışmadır. Daha önce bölgede yapılan yol araştırmaları Pisidia bölgesinin genelini bir bütün halinde ele almamış, sadece bölgesel araştırmalar sürdürülmüştür. Tez çalışması sırasında 19. yüzyılın başından başlayarak söz konusu bölgede yapılan, özellikle Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi Yolları ile ilgili çalışmalar güncel literatür de takip edilerek bir araya getirilmiştir.

È il nuovo progetto collettivo del Cift; debutterà a “Milanofil”, in programma tra il 17 ed il 18 marzo Roma (14 marzo 2017) - L’idea: raccontare attraverso la filatelia tematica, quindi impiegando francobolli, annulli speciali, interi, affrancature meccaniche e quant’altro, ventisette antichi tragitti romani, di maggiore o minore importanza. È il nuovo progetto sottoscritto dal Centro italiano filatelia tematica, intitolato “Tutte le strade parton da Roma”. Debutterà a “Milanofil”, il salone del francobollo organizzato da Poste italiane per il 17 ed il 18 marzo (Milano congressi, via Gattamelata 5, aperto gratuitamente dalle ore 9.30 alle 18.30). È il sesto lavoro collettivo organizzato dal Cift, dopo i tre dedicati alla “Divina commedia”, poi alla Costituzione ed alla sostenibilità. “Si è materializzato -spiega il presidente del Centro, Paolo Guglielminetti- dopo l’impresa del giornalista e scrittore Paolo Rumiz, che ha seguito a piedi l’intero tracciato della via Appia, da Roma a Brindisi, con un resoconto giornaliero sul quotidiano «La repubblica». Un paio di collezioni riguardanti l’Appia antica di diversi anni fa hanno dimostrato la fattibilità dell’iniziativa e la monografia di «Archeo» («Tutte le strade dell’Impero») è stata un valido supporto storico”. Da qui la rielaborazione con approccio collezionistico di tali antichi percorsi, raccontati da venticinque appassionati in ventotto contributi (uno è dedicato alla costruzione degli stessi tragitti); ogni contributo è composto da dodici fogli espositivi, il primo dei quali dedicato all’autore ed al cammino “adottato”.
