Anahtar kelimeler Pisidia, Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi, Via Sebaste, Miltaşı, Yol Ağları iv (Roads of Roman Period in Pisidia Region, Master's Thesis by AĞGÜL Serap, Isparta 2019) ABSTRACT “Roads of Roman Imperial Period in Pisidia Region” is a study which has been prepared to explain the systems of the region. Previous road surveys in the region did not include the entire Pisidia, but only local studies were conducted. In the scope of this thesis, the surveys especially about the paths of Roman Imperial Period from the beginning of 19th century, were brought together from the road current literature. Especially the examination and tabulation of milestones made the study more successful while these information were gathered. A table of milestones developed during our study, helps to understand the road system of the region. Pisidia Region has been able to preserve its local cultural characteristics due to the mountainous position of the Taurus Mountains. Pisidia Region has many questions to be searched. One of these questions is the development of the road systems throughout the region and how this system has been used by diffirent civilizations occupied the region. This question is the subject of this thesis, which, the road networksnets of the Roman Imperial Period, that make itself felt as the best planned system in the region. At the same time, it is intended to address the commercial importance and their critical role in the regional economy and their contribution to the region in terms of cultural activities and military purposes. The roads system have entered a systematic order by the presence of a central government. The roads system of the region has been systematically organized since the Hittetie Period. Inspecting and ensuring their security were adopted as a management policy. The most important line for the region during the Roman Imperial Period was Via Sebaste. Therefore, in this thesis, we tried to examine how the settlements in the inner parts of Pisidia can be connected to Via Sebaste, the main road work, by analyzing the v path axes of the mountainous region. In the thesis which accepts highways as a main study, the routes of the river and lake transportation of the region concerned.

  • Orbis Terrarum DATE: AD 20 AUTHOR: Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa
Orbis Terrarum #118 TITLE: Orbis Terrarum DATE: A.D. 20 AUTHOR: Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa DESCRIPTION: The profound difference between the Roman and the Greek mind is illustrated with peculiar clarity in their maps. The Romans were indifferent to mathematical geography, with its system of latitudes and longitudes, its astronomical measurements, and its problem of projections. What they wanted was a practical map to be used for military and administrative purposes. Disregarding the elaborate projections of the Greeks, they reverted to the old disk map of the Ionian geographers as being better adapted to their purposes. Within this round frame the Roman cartographers placed the Orbis Terrarum, the circuit of the world. There are only scanty records of Roman maps of the Republic. The earliest of which we hear, the Sardinia map of 174 B.C., clearly had a strong pictorial element. But there is some evidence that, as we should expect from a land-based and, at that time, well advanced agricultural people, subsequent mapping development before Julius Caesar was dominated by land survey; the earliest recorded Roman survey map is as early as 167-164 B.C. If land survey did play such an important part, then these plans, being based on centuriation requirements and therefore square or rectangular, may have influenced the shape of smaller-scale maps. This shape was also one that suited the Roman habit of placing a large map on a wall of a temple or colonnade. Varro (116-27 B.C.) in his De re rustica, published in 37 B.C., introduces the speakers meeting at the temple of Mother Earth [Tellus] as they look at Italiam pictam [Italy painted].

But success has been less frequent, because the knowledge of coins is essentially a knowledge of details, and small treatises are apt to be un- readable when they contain too many references to particular coins, and unprofltably vague when such references are avoided. I cannot hope that I have passed safely between these two dangers ; indeed, my desire has been to avoid the second at all risk of encountering the former. At the same time it may be said that this book is not meant for the collector who desires only to identify the coins which he happens to possess, while caring little for the wider problems of history, art, mythology, and religion, to which coins sometimes furnish the only key.

  • The Route of Paul's First Journey to Pisidian Antioch
New Test. Stud. , pp. –. Printed in the United Kingdom © Cambridge University Press doi:10.1017/S002868850999004X The Route of Paul’s First Journey to Pisidian Antioch MARK WILSON University of South Africa, Pretoria, South Africa email: [email protected] The route of Paul’s first journey between Perga and Pisidian Antioch is still dis- puted. This article examines the three alternatives proposed by scholars. It explores the geographical and historical evidence for each route, looking especially at the extensive road system that existed in Pamphylia, Pisidia, and south Galatia in the first century. Bible atlases routinely depict one route and the reasons for this choice are discussed. Based on a review of the evidence, a fresh hypothesis for the route of the first journey is suggested. Keywords: Paul’s first journey, Perga, Pisidian Antioch, Via Sebaste, Roman roads, Acts .; . Introduction The routes that the apostle Paul took on his journeys across Asia Minor still remain in dispute. A case in point is the route of Paul’s first journey from Perga (Πέργη) to Pisidian Antioch. Scholars have suggested three possible routes with variations for this journey. Two of these routes are routinely depicted in Bible atlases, often with little awareness of the ancient road network or the topo- graphy of the area. On a popular level, the recent opening of the St Paul Trail in southern Turkey has also stirred up interest in the route of Paul’s first journey. Although the St Paul Trail does not follow the ancient routes exactly, Kate Clow’s experience in preparing the new path has provided fresh insights into the region’s history and topography.
