This page intentionally left blank Preface This book is an interpretation of two unusual documents of Greek religion, which though of obvious importance have baffled understanding until now. Both are ‘‘sacred laws’’ calling for certain rites to be performed; they would normally be of interest to specialists alone. But in both, the variety of items and the strangeness of some are unparalleled. It is because old customs have been selected, and new occasions have been devised, so as to satisfy and reconcile the unequal members of a traditional society, the few and the many who are so often set against each other. Both documents are tantamount to a religious reform, otherwise hardly seen in Greek cities. There have been three successive versions, differing considerably in the material included. The original version was much improved by expert criti- cism. Robert Parker at a busy time probed and queried much of it. An authoritative reader for the APA Monograph Committee supplied a searching philological critique. Kathryn Gutzwiller, chair of the committee, tactfully and patiently guided both revisions. After this long process, the book is dedicated to four family members in gratitude for their unfailing interest and forbearance. Religion and Reconciliation in Greek Cities This page intentionally left blank Introduction Sacred Laws Greek inscriptions regulating sacred matters, sacred laws so called, are a large and varied class; they help us to a more realistic understanding of Greek religion than we obtain from literary works or monuments. They are seldom laws in the sense of enactments by an official body but rather customs of self-evident authority. They plunge us straightway into details of priests and processioners and cult associates, of groves and altars and offerings, of treasuries and inven- tories, and of ritual of every kind from personal ablutions to interstate festivals, but especially of animal sacrifice, a way of life as much as a religious ceremony. They have come to light all round the Greek world, in the homeland and in colonial areas, and from an early period, as early as any kind of public inscrip- tion. Similar details recur everywhere. In the light of sacred laws we could assert the proposition, if Herodotus had not already done so, that next to consanguin- ity and language Greeks are defined by their religion. Asacredlawgivesnotice,whethertoneighborsofalocalsanctuaryorfarand wide. The most comprehensive are sacred ‘‘calendars’’ published by a city or a village or other social entity. These are long lists of sacrifices, sometimes of other things as well, month by month, even day by day, throughout the year. They are valuable not only for their assortment of detail, but for showing what is most essentialtoourunderstanding,theseasonalcontextofeachitem.Greekreligionis a nature religion suited to the resources and the livelihoods of the Mediterranean shores that the Greeks inhabited. The yearly progress of the seasons calls for a cycle of ritual addressed to deities who inhabit different parts of nature. 4 introduction Sacred laws may be prompted by changing conditions or by large events. The most elaborate example of a sacred calendar was assembled and published at Athens at almost the worst time in the city’s history, the last years of the Peloponnesian War and the ensuing years of internal conflict. Other calendars were compiled to mark a synoecism, the enlargement of a community, as when the island of Cos became prosperous and much visited. Festivals were extended or even created to show off the importance of a growing city. Cult associations were formed to satisfy needs newly felt, such as loyalty or good fellowship or a deeper piety. The Eleusinian Mysteries, a universal cult of the grain goddess transcending city-state and every other allegiance, issued schedules and regu- lations repeatedly during more than seven centuries. Such are sacred laws, their scope and character. But the two inscriptions that are the subject of this book are different from all the rest: a sacred law of Selinus of the mid-fifth century, and another of Cyrene of the late fourth century. Both are extraordinary documents of Greek religion that have resisted any satisfactory interpretation. The Sacred Law of Selinus The inscription of Selinus in southwest Sicily was first published in 1993.Itisa large lead tablet about two feet wide and eight inches high, dated by letter forms to the mid-fifth century b.c. It sets out rules for sacrifice and other ritual in two columns of writing that are upside down to each other. This format is unique and unexplained. A bronze bar is laid vertically between the columns so as to clamp the tablet with just three nails to some wooden fixture; at any given time the column that is right side up is on the right.

    The Outbreak of the Rebellion of Cyrus the Younger Jeffrey Rop N THE ANABASIS, Xenophon asserts that the Persian prince Cyrus the Younger was falsely accused of plotting a coup I d’état against King Artaxerxes II shortly after his accession to the throne in 404 BCE. Spared from execution by the Queen Mother Parysatis, Cyrus returned to Lydia determined to seize the throne for himself. He secretly prepared his rebellion by securing access to thousands of Greek hoplites, winning over Persian officials and most of the Greek cities of Ionia, and continuing to send tribute and assurances of his loyalty to the unsuspecting King (1.1).1 In Xenophon’s timeline, the rebellion was not official until sometime between the muster of his army at Sardis in spring 401, which spurred his rival Tissaphernes to warn Artaxerxes (1.2.4–5), and his arrival several months later at Thapsacus on the Euphrates, where Cyrus first openly an- nounced his true intentions (1.4.11). Questioning the “strange blindness” of Artaxerxes in light of Cyrus’ seemingly obvious preparations for revolt, Pierre Briant proposed an alternative timeline placing the outbreak of the rebellion almost immediately after Cyrus’ return to Sardis in late 404 or early 403.2 In his reconstruction, the King allowed Cyrus 1 See also Ctesias FGrHist 688 F 16.59, Diod. 14.19, Plut. The aS trap Of Western Anatolia And The Greeks Abstract This dissertation explores the extent to which Persian policies in the western satrapies originated from the provincial capitals in the Anatolian periphery rather than from the royal centers in the Persian heartland in the fifth ec ntury BC. I begin by establishing that the Persian administrative apparatus was a product of a grand reform initiated by Darius I, which was aimed at producing a more uniform and centralized administrative infrastructure. In the following chapter I show that the provincial administration was embedded with chancellors, scribes, secretaries and military personnel of royal status and that the satrapies were periodically inspected by the Persian King or his loyal agents, which allowed to central authorities to monitory the provinces. In chapter three I delineate the extent of satrapal authority, responsibility and resources, and conclude that the satraps were supplied with considerable resources which enabled to fulfill the duties of their office. After the power dynamic between the Great Persian King and his provincial governors and the nature of the office of satrap has been analyzed, I begin a diachronic scrutiny of Greco-Persian interactions in the fifth century BC.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND D JURING the six years, 307/6-302/1 B.C., issues were raised and settled which shaped the course of western history for a long time to come. The epoch was alike critical for Athens, Hellas, and the Macedonians. The Macedonians faced squarely during this period the decision whether their world was to be one world or an aggregate of separate kingdoms with conflicting interests, and ill-defined boundaries, preserved by a precarious balance of power and incapable of common action against uprisings of Greek and oriental subjects and the plundering appetites of surrounding barbarians. The champion of unity was King Antigonus the One- Eyed, and his chief lieutenant his brilliant but unstatesmanlike son, King Demetrius the Taker of Cities, a master of siege operations and of naval construction and tactics, more skilled in organizing the land-instruments of warfare than in using them on the battle field. The final campaign between the champions of Macedonian unity and disunity opened in 307 with the liberation of Athens by Demetrius and ended in 301 B.C. with the Battle of the Kings, when Antigonus died in a hail of javelins and Demetrius' cavalry failed to penetrate a corps of 500 Indian elephants in a vain effort to rescue hinm. Of his four adversaries King Lysimachus and King Kassander left no successors; the other two, Kings Ptolemy of Egypt and Seleucus of Syria, were more fortunate, and they and Demetrius' able son, Antigonus Gonatas, planted the three dynasties with whom the Romans dealt and whom they successively destroyed in wars spread over 44 years.

    BIJILDINGS ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE AG-ORA PLATES I-VITI INTRODUCTION' The region to the north of the Areopagus and to the east of Kolonos Agoraios had many natural advantages to recommend it as the site for thZecentral public place of the com- munity (Fig. 1). It was the most open and level area of any extent beneath the immediate shelter of the Acropolis. Along its southern edge a series of springs bubbled out from the foot of the Areopagus, so abundant as to have formed the principal source of drinking water in the city throughout antiquity. A gentle slope toward the north guaranteed adequate natural drainage, desirable for private habitation and essential for the construc- tion of large public buildings. The region lay, moreover, on the direct route between the Acropolis and the Dipylon, the principal gate of the city, and so was conveniently situated alike for residents and visitors. Actual habitation in the area can now be shown to extend at least well back into the second millennium B.C. Scattered fragments of household pottery of typical Middle Helladic types, Gray Minyan and Matt-painted wares, have appeared above bedrock along the north foot of the Areopagus, along the east slope and foot of Kolonos and even at the north foot of Kolonos. Abstract The trumpet from the 5th century BC in ancient Greece, the salpinx, has been largely ignored in modern scholarship. My thesis begins with the origins and physical characteristics of the Greek trumpet, comparing trumpets from other ancient cultures. I then analyse the sounds made by the trumpet, and the emotions caused by these sounds, noting the growing sophistication of the language used by Greek authors. In particular, I highlight its distinctively Greek association with the human voice. I discuss the range of signals and instructions given by the trumpet on the battlefield, demonstrating a developing technical vocabulary in Greek historiography. In my final chapter, I examine the role of the trumpet in peacetime, playing its part in athletic competitions, sacrifice, ceremonies, entertainment and ritual.
