We started to ease the restrictions on the dispatch of some of our paper publications for July 2020. We are continuing this effort and following some positive feedback on successful receipts of publications, we are now in a position to confirm the publications schedule for the rest of the year. As previously, we will continue to closely monitor our distribution network capacities. • Earthquake and Tsunami in Turkey: a Case from Izmir
Keynote 20-23 June 2021 Earthquake and Tsunami in Turkey: A Case From Izmir Orhan Polat Professor, Dokuz Eylul University, Engineering Faculty, Department of Geophysics, Division of Seismology, Izmir, Turkey Corresponding Author E-mail: [email protected] Corresponding Author ORCID: 0000-0001-9490-6839 Keywords Abstract Earthquake, With a coastline more than 8.300 km, the Turkey shows high seismicity rate and is under Tsunami, tsunami threat originated from the Aegean Sea. Broad tsunami researches conducted along Runup height, the coasts of the country reveal 137 tsunamis during the last 3500 years. Data on sea level Inundation, changes shows remarkable tsunamis evidences in the Black Sea (Fatsa-Ordu, Amasra-Bartin), Sigacik Bay, Izmir, Marmara Sea (Istanbul, Kocaeli), Aegean Sea (Ayvalik-Balıkesir, Izmir, Kusadasi-Aydin, Turkey. Gulluk Bay-Fethiye-Mugla) and the Mediterranean (Antalya, Iskenderun-Hatay). But it can be claimed according to the literature review that tsunamis mostly effect the Aegean coasts with 20 strong events. The level of seismic activity and tsunami potential are influenced by the presence of pure or dominant normal faults. The earthquakes that occurred on 15 August 0554, 27 August 1886 and 23 July 1949 have strongly felt and caused tsunami damages from North to South coasts. Izmir has the longest coastline of the Middle Aegean region and is an earthquake-prone city by experienced the 20 March 1389 Chios Island, 10 July 1688 Izmir Bay, 12 May 1852, 08 September 1852, 13 November 1856, 19/22 January 1866 and 03 April 1881 Chios Island earthquakes. • Tsunamis Along the Coasts of the Black Sea
46 Second Balkan Geophysical Congress and Exhibition O8-1 TSUNAMIS ALONG THE COASTS OF THE BLACK SEA YILDIZ ALTINOK I. U. Muhendislik Fakultesi, Jeofizik Muhendisligi Bolumu, 34850 Avcilar, Istanbul, Turkey It is well known that the majority of Mediterranean tsunamis occur in the eastern Mediterranean. In studies of eastern Mediterranean tsunamis, Black Sea tsunamis are also mentioned. But the data on these tsunamis are incomplete. Most of the information on this subject is for the 20th century. The first historical document about the Black Sea records a tsunami as early as the 1st century BC. The Armenian chronicler Mowses Khorenatsi (410-491AD) mentioned a sudden flooding of the southern shores of the Black Sea back in the legendary times (Nikonov, 1997b). The Byzantine choronicler Theophanes (760-818AD) reports that “In this year (544/545) the sea advanced on Thrace by four miles (6 km) and covered it in the territories of Odessus and Dionysopolis and also Aphrodisium. Many were drowned in the waters. By God’s command the sea then retreated to its own place” (Guidoboni et al., 1994). When we look at the geographical distribution of Black Sea tsunamis, most tsunami reports center on the Crimea. The first such reports for Crimea refers to the 2nd century AD (103). During this tsunami which occurred along the Sevastopol Bay, the sea first receded up to 0.5 km then returned. In the present century, the tsunami related to the earthquake of September 11, 1927 (M = 6.8 ± 0.1) affected southern Crimea. The tsunamis generated on the eastern part of Black Sea are also important.

For centuries, inhabitants of coastal areas have suffered from the effects of tsunamis. Turkey, with a coastline of 8333 km, has experienced many tsunamis. Historical records reveal that, during the observation period over 3000 years, the coastal and surrounding areas of Turkey have been affected by more than ninety tsunamis. These tended to cluster around the Marmara Sea, the city of Istanbul and the gulfs of Izmit, Izmir, Fethiye and Iskenderun. Each of the tsunami occurrences surveyed in this paper deserves further individual study. The most extensive available information concerns the tsunamis associated with the Istanbul Earthquakes of 1509 and 1894, the Eastern Mar- mara Earthquake in 1963 and that of Izmit in 1999, which disturbed the Marmara Sea; the Earthquake of 1939 in Erzincan in eastern Anatolia; and the 1968 Bartın Earthquake, which affected Fatsa and Amasra on the Black Sea.
