Pablo Picasso Early Life Pablo Picasso was born in Spain on October 25, 1881. His father was an art teacher and painter. Pablo enjoyed drawing at an early age. According to legend, his first d a piz, h f encil in S ani h. Pabl had little interest in school, but was a very talented artist. At age 14, Pablo began attending a famous art school in Barcelona, and then later another school in Madrid. He was bored with the classic teachings of art school though and had no desire to paint like people did hundreds of years ago, but wanted to create something new. His artwork is divided into periods. Blue Period (1901-1904) Pabl cl e f iend, Ca l Casagemas, committed suicide in 1901, causing Pablo to become extremely sad. He started painting in Paris, France, the center of art, around the same time. Most of his subjects during this time are sad and somber, with elongated features and faces. He painted almost exclusively in shades of blue and green. Some examples from this time are: Poor The Old Guitarist People on the Seashore and The Old Guitarist.
Rose Period (1904-1906) Pablo eventually got over his depression and also fell in love with a French model. During this time period, he began using warmer colors in his paintings, like pinks, reds, oranges, and beiges. He painted happier scenes, such as circuses. Some of his pieces from this period are: The Peasants and Mother and Child.
Cubism (1907-1921) Mother and Child Picasso started experimenting with a new style of painting in 1907 with another artist, Georges Braque. They had created a completely new painting style, Cubism, by 1909. Subjects in Cubism are analyzed and

Picasso started combining Cubism and collage in 1912. He used sand or plaster in his paint to add texture. He applied materials like colored paper, newspapers, and wallpaper to his paintings to add dimension. Some of his Cubism paintings include Three Musicians and the Portrait of Ambroise Vollard. Neoclassical Style Picasso continued to experiment with Cubism, but started painting a more classical style around 1921, borrowing ideas from Renaissance painters like Raphael. Picasso created powerful characters who almost appeared three-dimensional, like statues. Some works from this style are: The Pipes of Pan and Woman in White. Surrealism Pablo Picasso grew interested in the Surrealist movement around 1924. These paintings were not supposed to make any sense, so they often appeared like something you would see in a dream or a nightmare. Even though Picasso did not become a member of the movement, he did incorporate some of these ideas into his paintings. Some people called this his Monster period. Examples that have the influence of surrealism are Guernica, an anti-war painting and The Red Armchair. Self-Portrait Facing Death Legacy Some people consider Pablo Picasso to be one of the greatest artists in all art history. Many see him as the greatest artist of the 20th century. Picasso painted many styles and made several unique contributions to the art world. He painted some self- portraits near the end of his Pica full name is Pablo Diego life. One his final works was a José Francisco de Paula Juan self-portrait made with Nepomuceno María de los crayon, Self-Portrait Facing Remedios Cipriano de la Death.
