Auch für eine Gesamtdarstellung seiner Verfassungsgeschichte reicht unser Quellenmaterial nicht aus, vor allem infolge des Umstun- des, daß der gesamte Urkundenbestand des Hochstifts Oldenburg in Holstein, des l\lillcl- punktes der alten ahodritischen Diözese Oldenburg, uns verloren ist. Der Versuch der iiltercn Forschung, diese Lücke mit Hilfe der Fürstenurkunden des 12. und l:i. Jahrhunderts, und zwar vorzugsweise der pommersehen, zu schließen, ist in der Form, in der er vorgenommen worden ist, nicht zulässig 1). Dennoch bietet der Abodritenstamm für einige Grundfragen der allslawischen Stammesverfassung und ihrer Entwicklung in gewisser Weise verhältnismüüig günstige Voraussetzungen. Die Abodriten sind der einzige slawische Verband, der nicht nur vom 8. bis zu seiner Germanisierung im 12. und 13. Jahrhundert durchgehend als solcher bezeugt ist, sondern der auch in dieser ganzen Zeit eine gewisse politische Geschlossenheit bewahrt hat. -

ZINĀTNISKIE RAKSTI https://doi.org/10.22364/lviz.110.01 VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION BETWEEN GERMANS AND WENDS IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE TENTH CENTURY1* Mihai Dragnea PhD, Balkan History Association, President, Bucharest; Editor-in-Chief of Hiperboreea, an online academic journal published biannually by the BHA. Research interests: relations between Germans and Wends during the High Middle Ages, focusing especially on crusading and conversion. This study has provided a brief analysis of the linguistic interactions and ver- bal communication between Germans and Wends. What we noticed is that there is no Slavic language which has been unaffected by political and social influences from other dominant cultures. In the second half of the tenth cen- tury, cultural identity was linked more with political alliances than with lan- guage. Learning of German was a political reality which varied according to time and context. In order to maintain good relations with the Saxon nobi- lity, the Wendish elites needed to know German. This would have ensured a direct, unambiguous communication. Translators could interfere with the messages and generate conflicts. Some of the Wendish elites could have known Latin as well. As tributaries of Saxon margraves and dukes, they could have signed documents regarding their obligations. Therefore, a sort of ethnic consciousness was more developed among the Wendish upper classes than lower class. Einleitung Schleswig-Holstein, 1946 als eigenes Bundesland entstanden, wird gerne als Dreh- scheibe zwischen Ost und West, zwischen Nord und Süd und vor allem als Land zwischen den Meeren charakterisiert (Abb. 1). Die frühmittelalterliche Historie scheint insbesondere in der außerwissenschaftlichen Wahrnehmung weitgehend durch die Skandinavier geschrieben worden zu sein, die als Wikinger an Plätzen wie Haithabu und mit dem Danewerk Geschichte schrieben und mit denen sich nach wie vor Geschichten schreiben lassen (RÜDIGER 2008). Im Gefüge der slawi- schen Welt kommt Schleswig-Holstein in der Tat eine Randlage zu, die aber kei- neswegs mit Peripherie gleichzusetzen ist. Ganz im Gegenteil: die Nähe zum karo- lingischen bzw. ottonisch-salischen Reich, den skandinavischen Herrschafts- gebieten und Königreichen, aber auch seit dem ausgehenden 10. Jahrhundert zur civitas Schinesghe als eine fortbestehende slawische Reichsbildung, haben dem Raum zwischen Kieler Förde und Oder eine ganz eigene Geschichte beschert. Die Geschichte und Archäologie dieses auf den ersten Blick recht einheitlichen, bei differenzierter Betrachtung aber höchst heterogenen Raumes ist in zahlreichen Abhandlungen mit unterschiedlichen Fragestellungen, Ansätzen und Ergebnissen dargestellt worden. It cannot be contained.” This novel is a meditation on the juxtaposition of those two claims. It opens with a battle on the Baltic Sea circa 1000 and closes on the Wisconsin River in the aftermath of the Second World War. THE GERMAN CHURCH AND THE CONVERSION OF THE BALTIC SLAVS--Concluded JAMES WESTFALLTHOMPSON Universityof Chicago The fatal turning-pointin the history of the Baltic Slavs is the year iio6 when Magnus Billung, the last of his house, died and was succeeded in the duchy of Saxony by Lothar of Supplinburg. The new duke was politically as powerful as his predecessorand by tradition and family ties represented more than the Billunger the real interests of the Saxon people. The Billunger, as we have seen, were hostile to the conversionof the Slavs because the tithes of the church reduced the tribute which they exacted from the con- queredWends. Their interest had been to prevent missions among the Slavs. But Lothar was an ardent supporterof the church. His accession was followed by a renewal of church energy. For the first time church and state in Saxony were united in a common purpose. The sword of the duke was extended in favor of the clergy and a series of attacks began upon the Wends which were at once military expeditions and missionary campaigns. It is fair to say, however, that at this time the Rugian Slavs furnished some provocation for these feats of arms, apart from the religious zeal which actuated the Saxons. Like the Vikings of the ninth century, the Rugians, whose capital was situated on the island of Riigen, were a sea-robberfolk, adventurous and fiercely pagan.' Their depredations along the Baltic coast, in Mecklen- burg, Holstein, and Schleswig,whence they carriedoff men, women, and children into slavery, and immense booty, were serious. -

ANOTACE Bakalářská práce se zabývá titulaturou slovanských vládců v raném středověku stejně jako vývojem slovanských státních útvarů spravovaných těmito vládci. Je popsáno, jaké tituly připadaly vládcům v jednotlivých státních útvarech a co pro ně daný titul znamenal. V závěru je rozebrán význam a etymologie daných titulů.
