April 15th: Third Sunday of Easter

FROM THE PASTOR…

Dear Parishioners, St. Raphael’s recently sent a group of about a dozen Spanish-speaking parishioners to train- ing workshops for liturgical ministries, such as Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and Lec- tor. However, the majority of the group, organized by our Pastoral Ministers Maria and Paul Ca- siano, went to the workshop on what used to be known as “Usher”, but now is known by the broader term of “Minister of Hospitality”. Those of a certain age remember when “usher” simply meant taking up the collection and maintaining order in church. However, the ministry has expanded in recent times, beginning at the church entrance where these ministers greet incoming worshippers with a smile and welcome them to Mass. This proactive “hosting” attitude creates a better community atmosphere for worship (especially for newcomers or those attending Mass alone) and actually enables parishioners to pray better. Several years back, I knew a priest who would take a post-Christmas break each year and fly to to ski. He always stopped at the famous Mormon headquarters (Temple Square) in Salt Lake City, where he loved to watch and “clock” how long it took for each of the thousands of regular visitors to that site to be personally greeted and welcomed by a Mormon “host” once they entered the precincts. According to this priest, it was always less than a minute. Would that we could recreate that same friendly environment at Catholic Sunday Mass. No one should enter the church unwelcomed or ungreeted or feeling alone. Our new ministers (wearing tags that say “Hospitalidad”— Spanish for “Hospitality”) have learned the importance of this and are already busy at work at our church doors as the People of God enter St. Raphael’s for the Sunday 12:30 pm Mass. Thank you! -Father Jerry Jecewiz

THIS ‘N THAT 1. UNITED FORTIES CIVIC ASSOCIATION meets this comingThurs., Apr. 19th, 7 pm, at St. Teresa’s Parish Center (44St. / 50 Ave.) in Woodside. Police and elected officials reports, and updates on area Homeless Shelters. 2. St. Raphael’s Food Pantry thanks parishioners for their Pantry donations (totalling $2132) in the collection at the Holy Thursday Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper. 3. Thanks to all who worked or patronized last weekend’s Rummage Sale, which was a nice kick-off to the upcoming Flea Market season outdoors. The event realized $854 for our parish. And thanks to Leah Segarra for donating the outdoor banner that advertised the sale. 4. Elizabeth Ciro and family thank all for their concern about her husband Nestor, who disappeared after a medical appointment in Forest Hills this past Monday. After a search by family and the NYPD, Nestor was found at the Metropolitan Hospital in Harlem on Wednesday. 5. A group of our Mexican parishioners just showed their deep love for their homeland parish (Santo Tomás in Tlapanala, Puebla). Its buildings were badly destroyed by the earthquake awhile back. They held a Kermés (Food and Entertainment Fair) here last weekend and raised $3,768 for their former church. Normally, we would not allow such an event on our premises, since we can not guarantee the safe transmittal of funds to the destination. However, Di Marzio is travelling to Mexico in a few days (to deliver the rest of the Brooklyn and Queens Churches’ Earthquake Relief funds), and the money for Santo Tomás will travel with him. Lucky! 6. Father Jerry’s “Magic with a Message” program will be presented this coming Saturday, April 21, At St. Martin of Tours parish in Bushwick. The beneficiary is St. Raphael’s parish.
