Belle Ringer Winter 2017 cover.indd 2 1/4/18 12:23 PM A Message from the Editor

Greetings.

As we pondered the theme for this year’s Belle Ringer, we found ourselves realizing we should just get back to basics, to what has always worked for : “Education for Your Future. Sisterhood for Life.” You see, what makes Bennett College so special is her charm. The kind of charm that permeates the campus and is felt by not only Bennett Belles but also by women who attended Bennett but didn’t graduate, by former faculty and staff members and by, frankly, anyone who visits our campus. In this edition of The Belle Ringer, we have worked diligently to try to capture just what makes Bennett so special. “Education for Your Future. Sisterhood for Life” is more than just a catchy slogan on this campus and in the lives of the Belles. At Bennett if you major in Biology you’re taught the proper way to dissect an animal. Likewise, if you major in English you’re taught the proper way to dissect a paragraph. But for Editorial Team (L-R) (left to right): Audrey Franklin ’72, Laurie Willis, Aziz Peregrino-Brimah, us the major requirement was just a prelude Shaakira Jones ’12 and Yolande Johnson ‘83 to more. You see, Bennett taught us to think like this: Just what is this ‘Sisterhood thing’ outside of the box, to form our own opinion you Belles have? We all simply say, you can’t which unleashed within each of us the power explain it unless you’ve lived it! So in this, the and confidence to conquer the world and any 2017 edition of The Belle Ringer, we provide small task under that category!! insight into the Bennett Sisterhood through the eyes of four Belles who have been close Dean Mary Ann Scarlette ’54, in one of her friends since their freshwoman year, and Orientation Classes to the Faculty and Staff, through others who may not have been at reiterated that Bennett didn’t simply offer Bennett College at the same time – or even syllabi based on classes and majors. Belle Ringer Winter 2017.indd 2 1/4/18 12:11 PM A Message from the BCNAA President Gwendolyn Macket Rice ’61

Greetings Sister Belles and Friends!

Thanks to so many of you, we indeed have begun to fulfill our promise to Engage, Empower, and Elevate our awesome alumnae. Serving as your president has been a joy. This responsibility has been made all the more joyful because of the work and support of our other elected officers, regional coordinators, ad hoc committee chairs, and each of their respective members – over 100 Belles. The numbers swell exponentially as we include 38 chapter presidents and/or area contacts and the countless Belles who work with them. As chapters are revitalized, new chapters organized, and as we begin to develop virtual chapters, more alumnae will actively engage. (Hint: if there are five Belles but no chapter in your area, you can start a chapter!) Countless others, in addition, are supporting the College with their gifts. Be sure that you are included in these numbers when the Belles “go marching in” the reports about Bennett.

Alas! We have been busy these six months! In addition to planning the retreat, highlighted in this edition of the Belle Ringer, we have learned so much more about the College and one another. Our Technology and Communications Committee has launched our new BCNAA website, www.bcnaa.org. Your contributions are essential to create a more robust site. You will see in the letter from our Fundraising Chair that her committee is fired up with many ideas and plans for fundraising. Our Recruitment Chair has worked to enhance the efforts of alumnae who are working feverishly to recruit new Belles. As our work progresses, you will hear more from all of our committees.

As we consider the work ahead of us, we must increase our membership. Only 10% of alumnae are National Alumnae Association members, and that includes the class of 2017 whose membership is gratis. Your membership is critical to strengthen our infrastructure and build our capacity for effectiveness. Membership forms can be downloaded from www.bennett.edu and mailed or you may now join through the new BCNAA website, www.bcnaa.org.

My joy heightens as I serve with our new College President, Phyllis Worthy Dawkins, PhD. She listens, she engages, she is innovative, she is strategic, and she values Bennett alumnae. Above all, my joy and excitement overflow as I learn what our budding alumnae are accomplishing!!! Our student Belles are studying and traveling abroad, attending professional conferences, engaging with world class leaders, holding powerful internships, and having empowering leadership experiences. Bennett continues to create awesome Belles! The work of the faculty and staff is so evident among our students. The students are the real reason that we must continue to support Bennett. Bennett creates Belles who are effective, vibrant women who make a difference. Visit www.bennett.edu often and keep up with their activities, subscribe to Bennett College on YouTube to receive notices of campus activities, view ACES programs, see the students’ Weekly Ring production, and read The Bennett Voice.

This year to date, you have demonstrated your unparalleled love for Bennett by more than doubling your contributions compared to this time last year. Your continuous or initial giving will ensure that we meet and exceed our 2018 goal of $1,250,000. Given cheerfully, your gift in any amount blesses both you and Bennett and will assure Bennett’s continued and stellar role in the education of women.

May JOY be yours now and in the year ahead!

P.S. Mark your calendar for Reunion Weekend, May 3-6, 2018, and plan to attend.

Belle Ringer Winter 2017.indd 5 1/4/18 12:11 PM Message from the Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement Mrs. Evelyn P. Leathers

Greetings, Bennett Belles!

The holidays are upon us, and I trust each of you is preparing to enjoy precious moments with family and friends. As 2017 winds down, I find myself reflecting on all of the advancement successes we have had at Bennett College this year. And that brings me to you – the Alumnae.

All of us at Bennett College – and in Institutional Advancement in particular – are extremely grateful for the way you stepped up to the plate this year when your alma mater needed you most. The more than $1 million that you contributed to Bennett College demonstrated your enduring commitment to the Institution and stated, unequivocally, you are just as determined as we are to ensure Bennett College continues educating young women of color for generations to come. I want you to know that it has been my pleasure working with you, in conjunction with Audrey Franklin, for the good of Bennett. And just as I have in the past, I welcome any fundraising ideas you may have as I know it will take all of us working together to bring Bennett College back to a position of financial stability.

As we prepare to usher in a new year, I am reminded of Ecclesiastes 4: 9-10 which says, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”

We are in this together, and I am confident that together we can bring Bennett back. I look forward to working with you in 2018 and humbly thank you in advance for the financial support you will give Bennett College.

Sincerely,

Evelyn P. Leathers Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement
