Conclusions page 421 [2] Notes and Acknowledgements This second edition of Shakespeare’s voice as spoken by his characters corrects the minor typographical errors to be found in the first edition, but also includes an introduction on Shakespeare's experiences as a young man, previously published as a stand alone essay at http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1420633/. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (OUP 1970) has 66 pages of quotations attributed to the writings of William Shakespeare in which there are 2369 quotations, which may reflect well over 5000 speeches, discussions, observations and comments that are present in Shakespeare’s work. It is largely from those speeches and discussions on Shakespeare’s 37 plays, as well as his, and others’ poems, that examples have been taken here. In this book all quotations from his poems and plays have been taken from various editions of the Arden Shakespeare. The writer is very much indebted to the rapid response provided by his son, Henry Audley-Charles , for guidance, advice and repairs to his ageing PC, that Henry provided at all hours. Without this assistance over the last 3 years this book could not have been written. In addition, the writer is indebted to Monsieur Francis Saillart for his knowledge of Shakespeare’s plays and poems shared during our many discussions. I am also indebted to my wife Brenda Amy Cordeiro for years of support, and for proof reading and help with this book. Finally, I acknowledge the debt I owe to Professor David Price of UCL. He has acted as the Editor and the guide for the whole project. The five characters from The Tempest that have been displayed in this book were sketched by Monsieur Francis Saillart. He has translated elsewhere all of Shakespeare's 154 sonnets into French, many of these translations are remarkably successful. His translation of The Tempest into French was performed on the stage in Paris in 2011 to much acclaim. In view of the importance of The Tempest, and to the other three Romance plays, Francis Saillart has kindly permitted us to display a copy of five of his sketches that can be seen on pages of this book that is focused on Shakespeare's words spoken by his characters. A number of people, from various parts of the world have, over many years, participated in an annual commemoration and rejoicing over the life and work of William Shakespeare, that used to take place in East Sussex , but this moved 20 years ago to southwest France, since when it led to the writing of this book. The anniversaries include a lunch, with what we trust is, as close as we can make it possible to traditional fare, of a kind that we hope would have been recognised by Will Shakespeare. We cannot pretend that these lunches, in their quantity, would have satisfied Sir John Falstaff, whose passing, with many other of Shakespeare’s characters, are also remembered and honoured at these annual lunches, celebrated at La Serre on every 23rd of April, the anniversary of the birth, and honoured at this same anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. Chapter 15 provides a condensed text of some of the history plays, with a particular emphasis on King Henry VIII. All the earlier plays were written before 1600. The high quality and range of the published discussions of the history of England plays has led to this book only attempting to deal with some particular issues related to some aspects of some of Shakespeare’s History of England plays. This paper is written as a contribution to the celebration of his work. We present here the case and explanation for the reason why, perhaps counter to expectations, the majority of his plays were set in places outside England and Scotland. The majority of his plays were in fact set in continental European countries, namely: Italy, Sicily, Bohemia, Greece, Denmark, Illyria, and the Adriatic coast as well as in France, Vienna, and in what was then called Troy (which is now called Hisarlik) in NW Turkey. The following pages of this paper will go some way, we hope, to explain why and how it was that from 1592 and continuing until 1611 he was able to describe in his plays in great detail the nature of life in foreign lands.

This is a theory which the play puts to the test. The idea of ‘virtue’ — in a variety of guises — is a key focus of this essay, which identifies as crucial those moments at which definitions of virtue are unsettled, transformed, or confronted with a range of alternatives. Several commentators have connected Shakespeare’s Coriolanus with the political ideas of Niccolò Machiavelli, the Florentine theorist whose notoriety rests upon his recommendation of moral flexibility for political leaders.     SYDNEY STUDIES Coriolanus: The Tragedy of Virtus ANTHONY MILLER From the opening entry of "a company of mntinous Citizens, with staves, clubs, and other weapons" to the next to last, barely coherent action-"Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill him!" "Hold, hold, hold, hold!"-Coriolanus displays an ancient world riven by war and civic turmoil.l For all its occasional evocations of a mar­ moreal Romanitas, it is also a busy play. Its protagonist accepts with relish and superhuman energy the opportunities for martial action that his world presents: Coriolanus is probably the most active of Shakespeare's tragic heroes, certainly the one least given to reflection. Yet the play's busyness is not always warlike. Much of it consists of talk, especially the contentious talk of political debate. Characters plan courses of action, rehearse public appearances, plot acts of vengeance, conjure with names, report off-stage events-and even events that the audience has seen occur on-stage. Much of the discussion revolves around Coriolanus himself. His nature and motives, his martial prowess and farouche political manners, are incessantly and variously canvassed. To a belligerent citizen, Coriolanus's heroics are performed to please his mother, and to be partly proud; to the indulgent Menenius, his nature is too noble for the world; to Aufidius, shrewd and grudgingly admiring, his actions are a matter for almost obsessive, but inconclusive, rumination: Whether 'twas pride, Which out of daily fortune ever taints The happy man; whether defect of judgement, To fail in the disposing of those chances Which he was lord of; or whether nature, Not to be other than one thing, not moving From th'casque to th'cushion, but commanding peace Even with the same austerity and garb As he controll'd the war; but one of these­ As he hath spices of them all, not all, For I dare so far free him-made him fear'd, So hated, and so banish'd.

To be honest, my first thought was ―Hmmmmmmm… I‘ve never even read that one. I‘ve seen the title listed with his other works, but I have no idea what it‘s about.‖ And then I read it. And then I read it again. It‘s an odd little play. Different from all of the other Shakespeare plays that we‘re so familiar with. But like all of those better known works, this one is about being human and some of the experiences that we might encounter along our life journeys. The play begins with the Poet and Painter philosophising about – what else? – life and art. Soon Timon and Flavius appear, speaking of Timon‘s financial status. From there we meet an assortment of characters including a merchant, friends, and flatterers. Timon‘s journey, according to Artistic Director Michelle Boulet, begins with excessive naivete that is later replaced by misanthropy and cynicism. The play, according to most Shakespeare resources, is classified as a Tragedy, so we know it will not end well for our title character. But, as always, there are lessons to be learned by the characters and by the audience. Students and teachers will enjoy discussing some of the play‘s essential questions about friendship, money, and what it means to be human.

    Michael Moore On Etymological Insults Can etymology benefit anyone? Philologists, philosophers and others have spilt gallons of ink over the value of etymological inquiries throughout the ages. We can learn something about the attitude of the ancients toward this issue from the etymology of etymology: “true meaning”. In this age of post-modernist constructivism we view with skepticism such strivings after truth. Indeed, how does it serve contemporary speakers that his clients boycotted Captain Boycott (Irish land agent, d. 1897), but that nobody lynched William Lynch (American vigilante, d. 1820). Or that nowadays one does not need wooden clogs (sabots in 19th century France) to throw into the machinery in order to commit sabotage? And what about popular etymologies (which we could paraphrase as the wrong true meanings of certain words; see de Saussure, 1915/1966, pp. 173-176), whose exposure shows that crayfish have as little to do with fish (from Old French crevice) as Jerusalem artichokes have with Israel’s capital (gira-sole, Italian, meaning "turns toward the sun", related to the common sunflower). The Hebrew Bible provides many additional examples, explaining that Babel (from Akkadian bab-ilu "Gate of God") derives from the Hebrew root b.l.l., confuse (Genesis 11:9), or that Moses' name means "drawn out of the water" (based on the Hebrew root m.sh.h.; Exodus 2:10) rather than on the far more likely Egyptian word mes, mesu 'child, son,' as in Ra-mses (see also Kedar-Kopfstein, 1963).
