The past few decades have seen several homoerotic interpretations of Shakespeare's crossdressing plays, but many of these readings argue that same-sex desire is transitional and that because the plays end in opposite-sex marriage, same-sex desire can never be consummated. While a case can be made for these arguments, readings that rely on the heterosexual-homosexual binary overlook the possibility of bisexual identities and desire within the plays. Historical accounts illustrate that same-sex relationships and bisexual identities did exist during the Elizabethan era. However, I will be examining bisexuality from a modern perspective and, as such, will not discuss the existence, or lack thereof, of bisexual terminology within early modern culture or as it relates to Shakespeare’s own sexual identity. -

The Queer “Third Species”: Tragicomedy in Contemporary LGBTQ American Literature and Television A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department English and Comparative Literature of the College of Arts and Sciences by Lindsey Kurz, B.A., M.A. March 2018 Committee Chair: Dr. Beth Ash Committee Members: Dr. Lisa Hogeland, Dr. Deborah Meem Abstract This dissertation focuses on the recent popularity of the tragicomedy as a genre for representing queer lives in late-twentieth and twenty-first century America. I argue that the tragicomedy allows for a nuanced portrayal of queer identity because it recognizes the systemic and personal “tragedies” faced by LGBTQ people (discrimination, inadequate legal protection, familial exile, the AIDS epidemic, et cetera), but also acknowledges that even in struggle, in real life and in art, there is humor and comedy. I contend that the contemporary tragicomedy works to depart from the dominant late-nineteenth and twentieth-century trope of queer people as either tragic figures (sick, suicidal, self-loathing) or comedic relief characters by showing complex characters that experience both tragedy and comedy and are themselves both serious and humorous. Building off Verna A. Foster’s 2004 book The Name and Nature of Tragicomedy, I argue that contemporary examples of the tragicomedy share generic characteristics with tragicomedies from previous eras (most notably the Renaissance and modern period), but have also evolved in important ways to work for queer authors. The contemporary tragicomedy, as used by queer authors, mixes comedy and tragedy throughout the text but ultimately ends in “comedy” (meaning the characters survive the tragedies in the text and are optimistic for the future). -

The Trial in the Venetian Courtroom: Portia's Arbitration as a Abstract Doctor of Laws Abstract The main narrative of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice deals with a dispute over the matter of bond in regard to moneylending, and its consequences upon the eventual default. Only the clever interference of a lawyer or judge brings the crisis to an end. In solving his dispute over the bond between Antonio, the merchant of Venice, and Shylock, the money lender and a Jew, Shakespeare offers one of the most famous trial scenes in literature. This trial scene presents the art of arbitration by Portia who was disguised as a Doctor of Law and sheds light on the nature of law, justice, equity, and divine law. What one cannot overlook in this trial scene is the importance of reading ability. After all, interpretation is the next stage of reading. Drawing just verdicts and wise arbitration while at the same time deconstructing the implicit violence and incongruity in law is based on ceaseless effort of analytic and creative act of reading. To be honest, my first thought was ―Hmmmmmmm… I‘ve never even read that one. I‘ve seen the title listed with his other works, but I have no idea what it‘s about.‖ And then I read it. And then I read it again. It‘s an odd little play. Different from all of the other Shakespeare plays that we‘re so familiar with. But like all of those better known works, this one is about being human and some of the experiences that we might encounter along our life journeys. The play begins with the Poet and Painter philosophising about – what else? – life and art. Soon Timon and Flavius appear, speaking of Timon‘s financial status. From there we meet an assortment of characters including a merchant, friends, and flatterers. Timon‘s journey, according to Artistic Director Michelle Boulet, begins with excessive naivete that is later replaced by misanthropy and cynicism. The play, according to most Shakespeare resources, is classified as a Tragedy, so we know it will not end well for our title character. But, as always, there are lessons to be learned by the characters and by the audience. Students and teachers will enjoy discussing some of the play‘s essential questions about friendship, money, and what it means to be human. -

Greek Theory of Tragedy: Aristotle's Poetics The classic discussion of Greek tragedy is Aristotle's Poetics. He defines tragedy as "the imitation of an action that is serious and also as having magnitude, complete in itself." He continues, "Tragedy is a form of drama exciting the emotions of pity and fear. Its action should be single and complete, presenting a reversal of fortune, involving persons renowned and of superior attainments, and it should be written in poetry embellished with every kind of artistic expression." The writer presents "incidents arousing pity and fear, wherewith to interpret its catharsis of such of such emotions" (by catharsis, Aristotle means a purging or sweeping away of the pity and fear aroused by the tragic action). The basic difference Aristotle draws between tragedy and other genres, such as comedy and the epic, is the "tragic pleasure of pity and fear" the audience feel watching a tragedy. In order for the tragic hero to arouse these feelings in the audience, he cannot be either all good or all evil but must be someone the audience can identify with; however, if he is superior in some way(s), the tragic pleasure is intensified. His disastrous end results from a mistaken action, which in turn arises from a tragic flaw or from a tragic error in judgment. Often the tragic flaw is hubris, an excessive pride that causes the hero to ignore a divine warning or to break a moral law. It has been suggested that because the tragic hero's suffering is greater than his offense, the audience feels pity; because the audience members perceive that they could behave similarly, they feel pity. -

Hospitality in Shakespeare: The Case of The Merchant of Venice , Troilus and Cressida and Timon of Athens Sophie Emma Battell A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of English, Communication and Philosophy Cardiff University 2017 Summary This thesis analyses hospitality in three of Shakespeare’s plays: The Merchant of Venice (c. 1596-7), Troilus and Cressida ( c. 1601-2) and Timon of Athens (c. 1606-7). It draws on ideas from Derrida and other recent theorists to argue that Shakespeare treats hospitality as the site of urgent ethical inquiry. Far more than a mechanical part of the stage business that brings characters on and off the performance space and into contact with one another, hospitality is allied to the darker visions of these troubling plays. Hospitality is a means by which Shakespeare confronts ideas about death and mourning, betrayal, and the problem of time and transience, encouraging us to reconsider what it means to be truly welcoming. That the three plays studied are not traditionally linked is important. The intention is not to shape the plays into a new group, but rather to demonstrate that Shakespeare’s staging of hospitality is far - reaching in its openness. Again, while the thesis is informed by Der rida’s writings, its approach is through close readings of the texts. Throughout, the thesis is careful not to prioritise big moments of spectacle over more subtle explorations of the subject. Thus, the chapter on The Merchant of Venice explores the sounds that fill the play and its concern with our senses. -

Charity www.bethestaryouare.org Antonio is a young Venetian man and one of the most successful merchants of Venice, known for being kind and generous. His friend Bassanio wishes to travel to the city of Belmont to woo Portia, one of the most beautiful women in the world left with an amazing amount of money left after the death of her father. Bassanio asks Antonio if he can fund his trip to Belmont and Antonio, who is poor as of the moment as his ships are at sail, agrees as long as Bassanio can find a loaner, who turns out to be Shylock. Shylock hates Antonio because his racist attitude towards Jews, shown by Shylock being insulted and spat on by Antonio for being a Jew. Shylock decrees that if Antonio is unable to repay his loan before a specific date, he may take a pound of flesh from any part of Antonio’s body that he chooses. Antonio accepts the offer on account of being “surprised by Shylock’s generosity.” Bassanio leaves towards Belmont with his friend Gratanio. In Belmont, Portia’s father’s will is refraining her from marrying, stating that each of her suitors must choose correctly from one of three caskets -- gold, silver, and lead -- and if they choose correctly, they get Portia. If they are incorrect, they must leave and never marry. The first suitor chooses the gold casket because the casket says "Choose me and get what most men desire", which must be Portia, as what all men desire is Portia. -

He is marked from his very first appearance as an outsider in Venetian society, scorned and spat on by Christians and stripped of his wealth and religion. Nevertheless, he is also fuelled by vengeance. How are we to interpret Shylock as a character? Is he a stereotypical villain, or the victim of prejudice and racial hatred? These activities encourage students to explore the character of Shylock, setting him against the backdrop of myths and fears about Jews that existed in Shakespeare’s England. Students will examine some of the ways in which Shylock has been depicted on stage and will relate these different interpretations to changing cultural sensitivities. The Jew as Dangerous Other in Early Italian Cinema, 1910-1914 Gerwyn Glyn Owen 2014 A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Film Studies School of Creative Studies and Media Bangor University ii Abstract My thesis examines imagery of the Jew in four Italian silent films: Il mercante di Venezia (Gerolamo Lo Savio, 1910), L’Inferno (Francesco Bertolini, Adolfo Padovan, Giuseppe de Liguoro, 1911), Quo Vadis? (Enrico Guazzoni, 1913), and Cabiria (Giovanni Pastrone, 1914). The thesis deconstructs this filmic imagery and traces its history back to medieval and Renaissance representations of the Jew. This process reveals connections between traditional anti-Jewish ideologies and the moving images of early Italian cinema. In so doing, my thesis demonstrates that there is a powerful relationship between the socio-political and religious discourses that were in circulation before the First World War in Italy and the presence of anti-Semitic stereotyping in these films. At this point, do you think Shylock is serious about the pound of flesh he demands as collateral for Antonio’s loan for Bassanio? Why or why not? 2. In 2.3. Jessica leaves her (Jewish) father for her (Christian) husband. Does her desertion create sympathy for Shylock? Or do we cheer her action? Is her “conversion” an uplifting one? 3. Shylock’s speech in 3.1.58–73 may be the most famous of the entire play. After reading this speech, review Ann Barton’s comments on the performing of Shylock and write a paragraph on what you think Shylock means to Shakespeare: “Shylock is a closely observed human being, not a bogeyman to frighten children in the nursery. In the theatre, the part has always attracted actors, and it has been played in a variety of ways. CLEaR , 2016, 3(2), ISSN 2453 - 7128 DOI: 10.1515/clear - 2016 - 0011 “Which is the Merchant and which is the Jew?” a Žižekian Reading of the Jewish Question in The Merchant of Venice Shih - pei Kuo National Chengchi University , Taiwan [email protected] Abstract This essay borrows Zižek ’ s interpretation of racism which combines the Marxist and psychoanalytic perspectives to read Shakespeare ’ s The Merchant of Venice . I argue that Shylock , the Jewish usurer , embodies both the structural contradiction of capitalism and the social contradiction which characterizes the Venetian setting torn by capitalism and Christianity. As Shylock exposes these contradictions which the Christian Venetians refuse to confront, h e is destined to be a scapegoat. From the Marxist point of view, the survival of capitalism relies on incessant production, which also means incessant investment of capital. Therefore, an active financial system is requisite to sustain the prosperity of ca pitalism. Paradoxically, this necessary condition of capitalism which facilitates the maximum use of cash is also its inherent vulnerability: once the circulation of cash is disrupted, it can lead to the crisis of the overall domino - effect collapse. The us ury represented by Shylock indeed reflects such inherent contradiction of capitalism. Also, usury, which excludes any human factor and only engages the direct monetary exchange, also contradicts the Christian orthodox belief of generosity and unrequited de votion. These central Christian values a re certainly questioned as Bassa nio ’ s courtship of Portia, based on his disguised wealth, is indistinguishable from a profitable enterprise. From the psychoanalytic point of view, Shylock ’ s fas cination with money and revenge also mirrors the Christians ’ clandestine longing for these two forbidden enjoyments.
