Prague Journal of English Studies Volume 5, No. 1, 2016 ISSN: 1804-8722 (print) '2,10.1515/pjes-2016-0001 ISSN: 2336-2685 (online) “The True Forme of Love”: Transforming the Petrarchan Tradition in the Poetry of Lady Mary Wroth (1587–1631) Tomáš Jajtner e following article deals with the transformation of the Petrachan idea of love in the work of Lady Mary Wroth (1587-1631), the fi rst woman poet to write a secular sonnet sequence in English literature, Pamphilia to Amphilanthus. e author of the article discusses the literary and historical context of the work, the position of female poets in early modern England and then focuses on the main diff erences in Wroth’s treatment of the topic of heterosexual love: the reversal of gender roles, i.e., the woman being the “active” speaker of the sonnets; the de-objectifying of the lover and the perspective of love understood not as a possessive power struggle, but as an experience of togetherness, based on the gradual interpenetration of two equal partners. 1 Who was Who at Amarna Akhenaten’s predecessors Amenhotep III: Akhenaten’s father, who ruled for nearly 40 years during the peak of Egypt’s New Kingdom empire. One of ancient Egypt’s most prolific builders, he is also known for his interest in the solar cult and promotion of divine kingship. He was buried in WV22 at Thebes, his mummy later cached with other royal mummies in the Tomb of Amenhotep II (KV 35) in the Valley of the Kings. Tiye: Amenhotep III’s chief wife and the mother of Akhenaten. Her parents Yuya and Tjuyu were from the region of modern Akhmim in Egypt’s south. She may have lived out her later years at Akhetaten and died in the 14th year of Akhenaten’s reign. Funerary equipment found in the Amarna Royal Tomb suggests she was originally buried there, although her mummy was later moved to Luxor and is perhaps to be identified as the ‘elder lady’ from the KV35 cache. Akhenaten and his family Akhenaten: Son and successor of Amenhotep III, known for his belief in a single solar god, the Aten. He spent most of his reign at Akhetaten (modern Amarna), the sacred city he created for the Aten. Akhenaten died of causes now unknown in the 17th year of his reign and was buried in the Amarna Royal Tomb. His body was probably relocated to Thebes and may be the enigmatic mummy recovered in the early 20th century in tomb KV55 in the Valley of the Kings. Nefertiti: Akhenaten’s principal queen. Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Conference, 8–10 April 2021 Isabeau Newbury, Carroll College, undergraduate student, “Cleopatra VII: How Modernity Altered One of Egypt’s Most Infamous Pharaohs” Abstract: In the course of history, many people are fascinated by the “other” but this fascination stems from works that are not factual depictions of an event or person. If the personification of historical figures is continuously perpetuated in fictional works, how we interpret the evidence can then be affected by these works. This is especially true of the ancient women in power in Ancient Egypt, but specifically in the case of Cleopatra VII, who was the last Pharaoh of Egypt. This study is designed to look at how desire vs fact changes the narrative, and how we need to be cautious about exotifying the “other.” Cleopatra VII’s image in modernity has been shaped by her portrayal in Shakespeare and Dante, as well as in Renaissance and contemporary artwork (including film). By keeping this in mind, it is not wrong to be fascinated by the “other” but it raises the question of how much of a historical person’s character can we really know if the facts we perceive to be true are affected by fictional manipulations of them. LISTING FOUR TYPOLOGICAL MOTIFS OF PYRAMID TEXTS A typological motif is a recurring expression shared by at least two texts of the same cat- egory or one of a category’s types, an expression which serves to distinguish them from the members of the opposing category. Motifs comprise empirical connections in propositional content. To note that two or more texts share the same kind of statement is to observe that they are connected. It is to identify features of familial resemblance and to sketch out lines of difference. This listing organizes motifs in alphabetical order according to the English labels applied to them. The beneficiary as an entity is present in most, and so normally he is not explicitly mentioned in the labels. Usually pregnancy of subject or object indicates him. Thus, for example, the motif called ‘Adorned with Eye of Horus as Cloth’ means “the beneficiary is adorned with the eye of Horus in the form of cloth.” The labels should not be regarded as having much importance beyond the purpose of indexing similar statements under a single heading. The actual connections visible in the cited passages are what are important. In the case of ‘Adorned with Eye of Horus as Cloth,’ one finds the beneficiary donning or being adorned (wn, bA) with (m) the eye of Horus (ir.t rw) in the form of cloth (tAi.t, rnn-wt.it). If there is any doubt as to the connection, the cited text and section number give direction to the place of verification. This listing is not a sub- stitute for the texts but marks them. -

‘More women: more weeping’: the communal lamentation of early modern women in the works of Mary Sidney Herbert and Mary Wroth Marion Wynne-Davies University of Surrey ([email protected]) I. Introduction ‘More women: more weeping’, Thomas Playfere reminded his congregation from the open pulpit outside St Mary’s on Bishopsgate on the Tuesday of Easter week in 1595.1 It would have been a prestigious event; he preached from a newly refurbished podium to the Lord Mayor and Aldermen of London, who were gathered with their families in a recently constructed house, as well as to an assembled throng of teachers and pupils from St Christopher’s dressed in their distinctive blue coats and red hats. The ceremony would hardly have unnerved Playfere, since he was an ambitious man who courted publicity and, through a combination of guile, ingratiating behaviour and populist sermons, would go on to win recognition at court and elevation at the University of Cambridge. Indeed, this particular sermon, which he later entitled The Meane of Mourning, was so successful that it was immediately released in two pirated editions, subsequently being published in an authorized collection of his most famous addresses. The text combines Playfere’s usual populist tone and rhetorical flourishes in order to address the question of mourning and, in particular, to dwell upon women’s communal and excessive grief. He defeated the Persian king Darius at Gaugamela, advanced to a welcoming Babylon, and progressed to Persepolis where he burned Xerxes palace supposedly in retaliation for Persias invasions of Greece some 150 years previously (Diodorus 17.72.1-6). Thus one empire gave way to another by a different name. So began the Greek empires that dominated Judea/Israel for the next two hundred or so years, the focus of this chapter. Is a postcolonial discussion of these empires possible and what might it highlight? Considerable dif�culties stand in the way. One is the weight of conventional analyses and disciplinary practices which have framed the discourse with emphases on the various roles of the great men, the ruling state, military battles, and Greek settlers, and have paid relatively little regard to the dynamics of imperial power from the perspectives of native inhabitants, the impact on peasants and land, and poverty among non-elites, let alone any reciprocal impact between colonizers and colon- ized.
