The conference offered an unprecedented opportunity to “rethink modern Japanese feminisms” from a broad array of disciplinary, temporal, geographical, and theoreti- cal perspectives, and it generated an overwhelmingly positive response from attendees. This book is the result of that gathering and the enthu- siasm of participants. Bullock, Ayako Kano, and James Welker he great diversity of feminist issues and practices represented T in this volume should make it clear why we have opted to write about “feminisms” in the plural. When the editors of this volume first con- ceived the idea for a book on modern Japanese feminisms, already more than a decade into the twenty-first century, it seemed an opportune time to reassess the many ways that feminist thought and activism have shaped modern Japanese society, as well as take stock of what work remained for future generations of scholars and activists. The chapters in this book work toward the rethinking of Japanese feminisms in several ways. Some authors throw light on ideas and prac- tices that resonate with feminist thought but find expression through the work of writers, artists, activists, and laborers who have not typi- cally been considered feminist. These scholars call on us to reconsider, and perhaps expand, the types of thought and praxis that we generally include within a feminist rubric. The authors of other chapters revisit specific moments in the history of Japanese feminisms in order to com- plicate or challenge the dominant scholarly and popular understandings of specific activists, practices, and beliefs. Rethinking Japanese Feminisms draws from and builds on the work of scholars, activists, and thinkers researching and publishing about “femi- nisms” since the 1970s, when the field of women’s studies emerged world- wide, becoming known in Japan as joseigaku. The intervening decades have seen the repositioning of women’s studies as gender studies, fol- lowed by gender and sexuality studies, which itself has often incorpo- rated or overlapped with a field now called LGBT/LGBTQ studies or 1 6715_Book.indd 1 8/3/17 3:42 PM 2 Julia C. Bullock, Ayako Kano, and James Welker simply queer studies. These new perspectives have reshaped how we con- ceive of modern female subjects, and, much as feminist scholarship was instrumental in the development of queer studies, so too has queer stud- ies influenced feminist scholarship—in Japan and elsewhere. Written by scholars who employ methodologies and theoretical perspectives from anthropology, cultural studies, gender and sexuality studies, history, lit- erature, media studies, queer studies, and sociology, the chapters in this volume reflect the influence of these theoretical and methodological shifts. Building on previous scholarship over the past several decades that has explored Japanese culture through the lens of gender and sexuality studies, the essays in this volume apply these insights toward an assess- ment of the past, present, and future of feminisms in Japan.1 The chapters that follow have been organized into sections focused on Activism and Activists, Education and Employment, Literature and the Arts, and Boundaries—specifically, ways feminist activism and thought in Japan have transcended national and cultural borders. Each section is preceded by a brief introduction underlining key points made in each of the chapters and highlighting common themes across the chapters. The conclusion, by Ayako Kano, considers questions of the canonization, nationality, and future of Japanese feminisms, drawing on keynote talks given by leading scholars of feminism, Vera Mackie, Barbara Molony, and Ueno Chizuko, at the 2013 conference. By way of providing context for these chapters, the remainder of this Introduction provides a historical overview of feminisms in Japan. An Introduction

    WOMEN’S MAGAZINES AND THE DEMOCRATIZATION OF PRINT AND READING CULTURE IN INTERWAR JAPAN by Shiho Maeshima A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (Asian Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2016 © Shiho Maeshima, 2016 Abstract This dissertation reconsiders the significance of a periodical genre hitherto marginalized in academia, namely, the Japanese mass-market women’s magazine, in the history of print/reading culture in modern Japan. The study also aims to investigate the interrelations among magazine genres, gender categories, and the formation of cultural hierarchy. Analysis of diverse periodicals from the late 19th century to the 1930s, their contemporary commentaries and various surveys reveals that, around the turn of the 20th century, magazine genres became increasingly gendered in terms of their formats, editing styles, content, and readership: magazines for adults evolved into either “serious” general magazines for men concerning “public” matters or “vulgar” women’s magazines on “light” issues related to the “domestic” sphere. It was the latter magazine genre that led to the democratization of print/reading culture in interwar Japan. Inclusion of various article genres written in highly colloquial styles, extensive use of visuals, stress on entertainment and people’s private lives, and increasing collaboration with other industries, were to become common practices among Japanese periodicals after WWII. The new editing style also contributed to the spread of a new reading style in Japan. With its accessible editorial and promotional styles, the interwar mass-market women’s magazine attracted readers from a wide range of ages and social classes, including men, and functioned as the “transfeminized” entertaining home magazine.

Her life, as her memoir shows, was one of misery, privation, and hardship from early childhood. Her parents were not legally married, and they did not register her birth in their family register. Ever since the Meiji Restoration, the government had required each household to have its family members registered at the local government office. A child born out of wedlock often was registered as thechild of the mother’s parents. This was not done for Fumiko until 1912, when shewas registered in her maternal grand-father’s family register as his daughter. A per- son not recorded in any register, vas in effect a nonperson.

    Introduction The Ohio Japan Project began in the mid-1980’s when Ohio agreed to join with Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin to form The Great Lakes in the Schools Project, funded by the U.S.-Japan Foundation. The members of the project from Ohio developed a series of lessons on Japan. During a trip to Japan in 1988, the Ohio team discussed these lessons with educators in Japan and had them formally critiqued by the International Society for Educational Information, Inc. in Tokyo. The society published a version of the lessons in Japan, while in Ohio they were published as Learning About Our World: Japan. Again with funding form the U.S.-Japan Foundation, the Ohio Japan Project sent a delegation of teachers in Ohio to Japan for two weeks in June-July, 2001. While there, the teachers gathered information to update the lessons previously published and to develop new ones, which reflect more current developments in Japan. Before and during the trip to Japan, the participants spent a great deal of time studying how the Japanese develop lessons that enhance deeper understanding by the students of the concepts to be taught. These lessons reflect the way Japanese teachers construct their lessons to accomplish that deeper level of knowledge and skill development. In this way, students retain the information for a longer period of time, which will help them be more successful on the future state achievement tests and the Ohio Graduation Test. The original publication of lessons identified the connections to the social studies and foreign languages curriculum models.

The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre.

The Female Gaze in Contemporary Japanese Literature Abstract The female gaze can be used by writers and readers to look at narratives from a perspective that sees women as subjects instead of objects. Applying a female gaze to discourses that have traditionally been male-dominated opens new avenues of interpretation that are empowering from a feminist perspective. In this dissertation, I use the murder mystery novels of the bestselling female author Kirino Natsuo and the graphic novels of a prolific four-woman artistic collective called CLAMP to demonstrate how writers are capable of applying a female gaze to the themes of their work and how readers can and have read their work from the perspectives allowed by a female gaze. Kirino Natsuo presents a female perspective on such issues as prostitution, marriage, and equal employment laws in her novels, which are often based on sensationalist news stories. Meanwhile, CLAMP challenges the discourses surrounding the production and consumption of fictional women, especially the young female characters, or shojo, that have become iconic in Japanese popular culture.

Russell, Gifu University ABSTRACT As the number of mixed race people grows in Japan, anxieties about miscegenation in today’s context of intensified globalization continue to increase. Indeed, the multiracial reality has recently gotten attention and led to heightened discussions surrounding it in Japanese society, specifically, in the media. Despite the fact that race mixing is not a new phenomenon even in “homogeneous” Japan, where the presence of multiracial people has challenged the prevailing notion of Japaneseness, racially mixed people have been a largely neglected group in both scholarly literature and in wider Japanese society. My dissertation project offers a remedy for this absence by focusing on representations of mixed race people in postwar Japanese popular culture. During and after the U.S. Occupation of Japan (1945-1952), significant numbers of racially mixed children were born of relationships between Japanese women and American servicemen. American-Japanese mixed race children, as products of the occupation, reminded the Japanese of their war defeat. Miscegenation and mixed race people came to be problematized in the immediate postwar years. In the 1960s, when Japan experienced the postwar economic miracle and redefined itself as a great power, mixed race Japanese entertainers (e.g., models, actors, and singers) became popular.

Carolyn Eberts A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts March 2010 Committee Walter Grunden Tiffany Trimmer © 2010 Carolyn Eberts All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Walter Grunden, Tiffany Trimmer Margaret Sanger, one of the best known promoters of birth control in the first half of the twentieth century, only visited Japan twice in the pre-war era. However, riding on the heels of a tradition of foreign visitors and receiving a vast amount of media coverage, the first trip in particular generated a great deal of interest not only in birth control but also in Sanger. In subsequent years, until the beginning of World War II, Sanger’s name took on a life of its own. Frequently mentioned in newspapers to catch the audience’s attention and strengthen the author’s credibility, Sanger’s name also was used to sell contraceptives. In addition, she was called on for her opinion and endorsement, including for a brand of pessaries that would have great importance for the birth control movement in the United States vs. One Package case. Still, though feted after the war and given great honors, including medals and the right to address the Japanese Diet, Sanger’s fame ultimately overshadowed her ultimate importance to the Japanese birth control movement. Due to traditional and developing attitudes towards family, abortion, and the nation, many Japanese eschewed Sanger’s general message in the pre-war era.
