How do political actors and citizens use social media to participate in the political process? This paper analyzes these questions in the context of contemporary Indonesia, a country with a young democracy and a vibrant emerging economy. First, the relationships between traditional and social media and politics are discussed. Then, the current situation in Indonesia’s traditional media industry and how it may have helped drive the popularity of social media in Indonesia is analyzed. Finally, the paper discusses social media in today’s Indonesia and provides examples of how political actors and citizens use social media in the political process. JEL Classifications: D72; L82 Keywords: Indonesia; Social media; Media; Politics; Democratic process; Political process; Media industry 2 1 Introduction The use and popularity of social networking sites online has increased dramatically over the last decade. Sudargo Gautama and the Development of Indonesian Public Order: a Study on the Application of Public Order Doctrine in a Pluralistic Legal System

Rivin Program Authorized to Offer Degree School of Law © Copyright 2015 Yu Un Oppusunggu ii University of Washington Abstract Sudargo Gautama and the Development of Indonesian Public Order: A Study on the Application of Public Order Doctrine in a Pluralistic Legal System Yu Un Oppusunggu Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor John O. Haley School of Law A sweeping proviso that protects basic or fundamental interests of a legal system is known in various names – ordre public, public policy, public order, government’s interest or Vorbehaltklausel. This study focuses on the concept of Indonesian public order in private international law. It argues that Indonesia has extraordinary layers of pluralism with respect to its people, statehood and law. Indonesian history is filled with the pursuit of nationhood while protecting diversity. The legal system has been the unifying instrument for the nation. However the selected cases on public order show that the legal system still lacks in coherence. Indonesian courts have treated public order argument inconsistently. A prima facie observation may find Indonesian public order unintelligible, and the courts have gained notoriety for it. This study proposes a different perspective. It sees public order in light of Indonesia’s legal pluralism and the stages of legal development. -

Parliamentary Team Visits M'sia Over Workers Issue
04 FEB 2002 Indon-Team PARLIAMENTARY TEAM VISITS M'SIA OVER WORKERS ISSUE JAKARTA, Feb 4 (Bernama) -- A five-member team of Indonesian parliamentarians flew to Kuala Lumpur this afternoon to appeal to the Malaysian government to relax its decision to reduce the number of Indonesian workers in the country. The team, led by a Deputy Speaker of the People's Representatives Assembly, Muhaimin Iskandar, comprises Sabam Sirait who is also head of the Inter-Parliamentary Committee, Bachrum Rasir, Happy Bone Zulkarnain and Posma Lumban Tobing. Muhaimin, who is responsible for parliamentary affairs on the people's welfare, told reporters before leaving for the Malaysian capital that during the two-day visit the team would hold discussion with Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Syed Hamid Albar. He was confident that with the close working relationship between the parliaments of the two neighbouring countries, an amicable solution to the problem could be reached. Indonesia had been worried by Malaysia's drastic action in deporting thousands of its workers as this could put pressure on unemployment at home where almost 40 million people are already without jobs. The move was prompted by a series of criminal incidents involving Indonesian workers, the latest being the violent riot at a textile factory hostel in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, and the fight among themselves in Cyberjaya. Indonesia has not only apologised for the rampage but also appealed to Malaysia to continue giving Indonesia priority in its recruitment of foreign workers. Displaying concern over the issue, President Megawati Sukarnoputri last Friday sent Justice and Human Rights Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra as her emissary to discuss matters affecting Indonesdian workers. -

This article argues that judicial leadership is the main contributing factor explaining the emergence of judicial power in Indonesia. This article posits that the newly established Indonesian Constitutional Court needed a strong and skilled Chief Justice to build the institution because it had insufficient support from political actors. As the Court lacked a well- established tradition of judicial review, it needed a visionary leader who could maximize the structural advantage of the Court. -
Mahasiswa Dan Santri Bersatu Untuk Meneguhkan Aswaja Di Bumi Nusantara
MAHASISWA DAN SANTRI BERSATU UNTUK MENEGUHKAN ASWAJA DI BUMI NUSANTARA Masykur Wahid UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten Jl. Jend. Sudirman No. 30 Serang Banten 42118 Telp.0254-200323 Fax.200022 Email : [email protected] Abstract: The Movement of Islamic students in the archipelago from the santri is the movement of Indonesian Islamic students (PMII). Santri moved since 1718 from Pesantren Sidogiri, Pasuruan. Students moved since 1849 from Doctor Djawa School Batavia (University of Indonesia during the Dutch occupation). To maintain independence with the values of aswaja (ahlussunnah wal jama'ah) from pesantren, PMII was born on April 17, 1960 in Surabaya. From the long history of santri and students united, this paper will explain the consistency of the movement of Islamic students who affirm aswaja in the archipelago with two questions. What is reproduced by PMII to confirm aswaja?, and how is the reproduction managed by PMII? Therefore, by method of ideological criticism, it was found that aswaja as the ideology of the movement is able to reproduce the dialectics of critical students and moderate students in serving the community. The management begins with systematic organizing and real action in academic activities on campus and religious social in the community. Key words: Santri, Students, Aswaja, Indonesia. Competitiveness in the mass media industry is tougher in market dominance. Media owners in Indonesia are competing to penetrate the market and secure their business positions by joining the politics, even the media itself is allegedly used by the owner as a commodity that can gain profit and become a propaganda’s tool for certain political interests. MNC Media Group is a media owned by Hary Tanoesoedibjo, a businessman and politician from the Perindo Party. Then, how does Hary Tanoesoedibjo commodify the MNC Media Group? Theory of Political Economy of Media, Vincent Moscow (1996) discusses the concept of commodification, explaining how the process of transforming goods and services with their use value into a policy that has an exchange rate in the market. The analysis by the author is to see at the relationships behind the production, consumption and distribution processes carried out by the MNC Media Group. Commodification of MNC Media Group is carried out through three types of commodification, namely; commodification of contents, audiences and workers.
