International Programme International Programme JULY–DECEMBER 2013 Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union CU URE IT IS MY GREAT PLEASURE TO PRESENT TO YOU THE CULTURE programme to celebrate Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Our desire is to use this opportunity to highlight the richness of Lithuanian culture, presenting at least a small fraction of our talented artists. Some of them are well established internationally and influence ‘the weather’ on the stage of the art world, others are young and upcoming, drawing the attention of peers through their innovative and inspiring ideas. The CULTURE programme reveals a good mixture of features which we usually connect with Lithuanian culture: its playful, sometimes quirky, intellectually charged nature, its leaning towards the lyrical, poetic and metaphoric, its preoccupation with history and memory, ritual and non-pragmatic ways of doing things. From the symbolism of the beginning of the 20th century, starting with the work of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, a composer and visual artist of equal stature, through to filmmaker Jonas Mekas, with his reflections on the dramatic turns of the 20th century and a search for what has been lost forever; from poetry readings to poetic documentaries and auteur films; from 2 | 3 international programme classical virtuosos and opera divas to mesmerizing concert installations and thought-provoking theatre performances, you will find it all in this programme, for your attention and delight. This vibrant, diverse and geographically spread programme is also the best proof of our European and international experiences of the last 20 years, the cultural connections between artists and cultural organiza- tions, the involvement of the Lithuanian representations abroad and our network of cultural attachés, as well as all our hardworking partners and supporters who collaborated on many fantastic projects. We could not be more proud of what we have achieved during this period, and this programme is good proof of it. I would like to sincerely thank everyone involved, and hope you will enjoy the events! Šarūnas Birutis LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, Minister of Culture of the Republic Culture is what fosters and develops common European values; it of Lithuania also represents a framework for a reliable, growing and open Europe. I am glad that the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union is accompanied by a rich programme of presenting Lithuania abroad, and underlining the unique cultural heritage of Lithuania, as well as its historically strong links with European culture. In order to present what we do best, we have come up with five special projects, to visit 17 countries and various international institu- tions. Projects offering modern presentations of Lithuanian photo graphy, modern art, the natural and architectural heritage, and economic accom- plishments, form an axis presenting Lithuania through a short acquaint- ance with the national creative potential, and underlining the historical and cultural links of Lithuania with other countries. The programme of the cultural presentation of the country is diverse, including jazz performances, concerts of classical music, and presenta- tions of folklore at various arts festivals and events. From New York all the way to Tokyo, my native Lithuania will be presented by world- 4 | 5 international programme famous Lithuanian artists, including Violeta Urmana, the opera singer, Oskaras Koršunovas, the theatre director, Šarūnas Bartas, a cinema director, and Žilvinas Kempinas, an artist. I trust particular attention will be given to Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, the artist and composer, with paintings to be exhibited at Ghent Museum of Art, while his music Brussels ⋅ Ghent ⋅ Strasbourg ⋅ ⋅ ⋅ 8 will be played in Norway, the Czech Republic, Denmark and Estonia. Veronika Vitaitė: Discoveries in Pianism Summary The book is devoted to the analysis of the performance skills, pedagog- ical and organisational activities of Veronika Vitaitė, a prominent cur- rent piano pedagogue, pianist, promoter of Lithuanian piano culture. Manifestations of the Professor’s personality in different fields of musi- cal activity, the universality of her works influenced the development of Lithuanian piano culture of the past decades: performance skills, a close relationship with Lithuanian composers encouraged the creation of piano duet, inspired the premiers of works of different genres; zeal- ous work, preparation of her students for international competitions yielded several generations of young pianists; intense organisational activities, long-time leadership of the Piano Department of the Lithua- nian Academy of Music and Theatre, constant supervision and care of training of young pianists of the Republic laid strong foundations for a further development of piano excellence. Thus far Veronika Vitaitė’s intense and multi-faceted activities have not been thoroughly discussed and properly assessed. Whereby the present monograph it is sought to fill the existing gap. In preparing the book, the following works by Lithuanian researchers were used: col- lections of articles compiled by Kęstutis Grybauskas (1984), Veronika Vitaitė (1993), studies of the development of the art of piano by Mariam Azizbekova (1991, 1998, 1999), Liucija Drąsutienė (1996, 2004, 2015), Eugenijus Ignatonis (1997, 2003, 2010), Rita Aleknaitė-Bieliauskienė (2003, 2014, 2017), Ramunė Kryžauskienė (2004, 2007), scientific in- sights of Leonidas Melnikas (2006, 2007), Lina Navickaitė-Martinelli (2013). To discuss Veronika Vitaitė’s artistic activities, we drew on the reviews of her concerts, and to analyse general principles of her teach- ing methods, reminiscences of her former students and a questionnaire survey were used, lessons of the experienced pedagogue, as well as workshops and master classes that she conducted were attended.

  • Lithuanian Writers and the Establishment During Late Socialism: the Writers Union As a Place for Conformism Or Escape Vilius Ivanauskas
LITHUANIAN HISTORICAL STUDIES 15 2010 ISSN 1392-2343 PP. 51–78 LITHUANIAN WRITERS AND THE EStabLISHMENT DURING LatE SOCIALISM: THE WRITERS UNION AS A PLACE FOR CONFORMISM OR ESCAPE Vilius Ivanauskas ABSTRACT This article analyses how the changes in the dominant attitude of local Soviet writers were encouraged, screened or restricted by the Writers Union [WU] through mechanisms of planning, control and even through measures of creating a secure daily environment. The author looks at the tensions and conflicts between writers of different generations, observing less ideology in the younger generation than in their predecessors since the development and dissemination of national images among the declared values of communism were increasing. The union as a system covered both aspects – conformism and the escape (manoeuvre). Though the WU had a strong mechanism of control, it managed to ensure for the writers such a model of adaptation where even those, who were subject to restrictions, had a possibility of remaining within the official structure, through certain compromises, while actually avoiding involvement in dissident activities or samizdat publishing. Introduction In August 1940 a group of Lithuanian intellectuals, most of whom were writers, went off to Moscow “to bring back Stalin’s Sunshine”, at the same time asking for Lithuania to be incorporated into the USSR. Forty eight years later in early June 1988 a few members of the local literary elite joined the initial Sąjūdis Group and from thenceforth stood in the vanguard of the National Revival. These two historic moments, witnessing two contrary breaking points in history, when Lithuanian writers were active participants in events, naturally give rise to the question of how the status and role of writers and their relationship with the Soviet regime changed.
