B.G.H. Eriksson Preface This study was performed in Samoa from 2005-09-20 to 2005-12-20 and finalises my university studies at Uppsala University towards an M.Sc in Biology. The work presented in this paper came about after a series of events and I owe greatly to all of those that are mentioned in the acknowledgement section. During 2005 a request was put forward to The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) from the Samoan Fisheries Division to perform a survey on the coastal resources (including sea cucumber resources) around the country of Samoa in the South Pacific. The coastal component of the Pacific Region Oceanic and Coastal Fisheries (PROCFish/C) section of SPC started up this work in collaboration with the Samoan Fisheries Division in June and August 2005 and covered finfish and invertebrate resources in parts of Upolu and Savaii. The invertebrate surveys included fisheries dependent and fisheries independent data collection. The fisheries independent surveys were in-water assessments of stock and habitat in grounds that was pre-selected because of fishing activities in that area. The data collected was generally density estimates (incl. species composition) across shifting habitats, but also biological data, such as length and weight measurements. Alongside this information fishery dependent data was also collected.

    PREDATOR DEFENSE MECHANISMS IN SHALLOW WATER SEA CUCUMBERS (HOLOTHUROIDEA) JESSICA A. CASTILLO Environmental Science Policy and Management, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720 USA Abstract. The various predator defense mechanisms possessed by shallow water sea cucumbers were surveyed in twelve different species and morphs. While many defense mechanisms such as the presence of Cuverian tubules, toxic secretions, and unpalatability have been identified in holothurians, I hypothesized that the possession of these traits as well as the degree to which they are utilized varies from species to species. The observed defense mechanisms were compared against a previously-derived phylogeny of the sea cucumbers of Moorea. Furthermore, I hypothesized that while the presence of such structures is most likely a result of the species’ placement on a phylogenetic tree, the degree to which they utilize such structures and their physical behavior are influenced by their individual ecologies. The presence of a red liquid secretion was restricted to individuals of the genus Holothuria (Linnaeus 1767) however not all members of the genus exhibited this trait. With the exception of H. leucospilota, which possessed both Cuverian tubules and a red secretion, Cuverian tubules were observed in members of the genus Bohadschia (Ostergren 1896). In accordance with the hypothesis, both the phylogenetics and individual ecology appear to influence predator defense mechanisms. EBERT 2 ABSTRACT: In September 1975, 5031 sea cucumbers (Holothuria atra Jager) were tagged with tetracycline and returned to a gutter on the seaward reef bench of Ananij Island, Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands. A sample of 184 individuals was collected in September 1976. Animals were dissected and plates of the calcareous ring were examined with ultraviolet radiation for tetracycline lines. Based on 18 tagged individuals, the Brody-Bertalanffy growth constants are: K = 0.11 and P00 = 0.89 cm (for interradial plates). Length (L, cm) and weight (W, g) of individuals are related to plate size: L = 36.35P and W = 1950P3, giving maximum size as 32 cm and 1352 g. Length frequency distributions for the population did not change from 1975 to 1976. A preliminary estimate of annual loss is 50 to 70 percent of the total population based on the growth parameters and population size structure. Holothuria atra shows asexual reproduction by transverse fission, which appears to be the major source of recruitment at Ananij rather than from the plankton. Furthermore, seed supply for native species FAO Regional Technical Workshop relies, for the most part, on natural collection, subject to 18–21 October 2010 natural population abundance with wide yearly variations. This Kingston, Jamaica situation has led to the current trend of culturing more readily available exotic species, but with a potentially undesirable impact on the natural environment. The centralizing of resources available in the region into a shared facility has been recommended by several expert meetings over the past 20 years. The establishment of a regional hatchery facility, supporting sustainable aquaculture through the seed production of native molluscan species was discussed at the FAO workshop “Regional shellfish hatchery: A feasibility study” held in Kingston, Jamaica, in October 2010, by representatives of Caribbean Governments and experts in the field. Molluscan species are particularly targeted due to their culture potential in terms of known techniques, simple grow-out technology and low impact on surrounding environment. It is proposed that a regional molluscan hatchery would produce seed for sale and distribution to grow-out operations in the region as well as provide technical support for the research on new species.

The density and population parameters of the sea cucumber Isostichopus badionotus from Sisal, Yucatan, Mexico were determined during the fishing season. Belt transects of 200 m2 were set in 10 sampling sites at two fishing areas. All organisms within the belt were counted and collected. In the harbor, 7,618 sea cucumbers were measured and weighed: the population parameters were determined using FISAT II. Mean densities of I. badionotus in April 2011, September 2011 and February 2012 were 0.84 ± 0.40, 0.51 ± 0.46, and 0.32 ± 0.17 ind m-2, respectively. Sea cucumber total length varied from 90 to 420 mm, with a uni-modal distribution. The growth parameters were: L∞ = 403 mm, K = 0.25, and to = -0.18, with an allometric growth (W = 2.81L1.781). The total mortality was 0.88, whereas natural mortality was 0.38, fish mortality was 0.50 and the exploitation rate 0.54. Even when sea cucumbers fishery in Sisal is recent and in development with a high density (5570 ind ha-1), it is necessary to establish management strategies to protect the resource, such as an annual catch quota, catching size (>280 mm length), monitoring of population density, and reproduction and larval distribution.

    38 SPC Beche-de-mer Information Bulletin #34 – May 2014 Parastichopus regalis — The main host of Carapus acus in temperate waters of the Mediterranean Sea and northeastern Atlantic Ocean Mercedes González-Wangüemert1,*, Camilla Maggi2, Sara Valente1, Jose Martínez-Garrido1 and Nuno Vasco Rodrigues3 Abstract Pearlfish, Carapus acus, live in association with several species of sea cucumbers. Its occurrence in hosts is largely dependent on host availability and its distribution from potential larval areas. The occurrence of Carapus acus in six sea cucumbers species from the Mediterranean Sea and northeastern Atlantic Ocean was assessed. The sea cucumber species Parastichopus regalis was the only host detected. Pearlfish from southeastern Spain (21 individuals) ranged in length from 7.0 cm to 21.5 cm. Two sea cucumbers from the area around Valencia harboured two adult fish each. These pairs of pearlfish, which were sampled during the summer, were able to breed inside of P. regalis, an event already noted by other authors. Pearlfish do not seem to choose their host according its size, as the correlation between fish length and host weight was not significant. Introduction Carapus acus (Brünnich, 1768) is a species recorded throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Symbiosis, the close relationship between west coast of North Africa in depths of 1–150 m organisms of different species, can occur in (Nielsen et al. 1999). It is common in the western the marine environment and, in relation to the Mediterranean Sea, mainly around Italy, Spain and species involved, can take place in various forms, France, and also occurs in the Adriatic and Aegean such as mutualism, commensalism or parasitism seas.

Foreword The conservation and management of sea cucumbers are of paramount importance because these animals fulfil an important role in marine ecosystems and are a significant source of income to many coastal communities worldwide (Conand, 1990; Conand and Byrne, 1994). The current grave status (see Glossary) of sea cucumber stocks in numerous countries can be attributed to three broad causes: rampant exploitation, ever-increasing market demand and inadequacy of fishery management. The unique life history traits of holothurians (e.g. low or infrequent recruitment, great longevity and density-dependent reproductive success) also make these species especially vulnerable to overfishing. The vulnerability of sea cucumber populations to local extinction and the risk of long-term loss of fishery productivity have prompted several international and regional meetings of expert scientists and fishery managers in recent years. In 2003, FAO hosted a technical workshop, “Advances in sea cucumber aquaculture and management”, and published a report with technical papers and recommendations for fishery management (Lovatelli et al., 2004). The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) also ran a technical workshop, in 2004 in Malaysia, entitled “Conservation of sea cucumbers in the families Holothuridae and Stichopodidae”, providing scientific justification and urging for the immediate need of conservation and sustainable exploitation of sea cucumbers (Conand, 2004, 2006a, 2006b; Bruckner, 2006a). In 2006, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) organized a workshop to produce a simple guidebook to help Pacific fishery managers to diagnose the health of their sea cucumber fisheries and develop appropriate management plans (Friedman et al., 2008a).
