Thank You to our sponsors 3 A MESSAGE FROM THE FRIENDS & HICOM TRUSTEES Welcome to a special community newsletter from Friends of Histon & Impington Recreation and Histon & Impington Community (aka HICOM) featuring the Village Wellbeing Week (4-13 May) and information on the Friends 2019 events and activities plus village sports club info. HICOM and the Friends of the Rec have worked closely together on organising the Wellbeing Week which has over 20 events and focuses on the social, mental, physical and spiritual sides of wellbeing. Indeed, the objectives of the Friends of the Rec and HICOM interlink and are complementary supporting sport, wellbeing, recreation and mobility in our community. This close working relationship between the two charities has existed for a number of years, primarily through the HI Rec Monday Club providing different exercise activities for over 40 older residents every week. It will be further developed in the Spring with the start of the Rec Sunshine Sports & Activity Club, a unique, fully accessible and inclusive sports and activities club for adults including provision for those living with memory loss and not normally able to join a sports club, and their carers. Last Spring the Friends of the Rec set up HI Community Athletics providing separate weekly sessions for 8-11s and 11 upwards. Up to 35 now attend weekly and there are still places avail- able. Last year the objectives of the Friends of the Rec were updated to widen its geographical area of support from just the Rec to the entire two villages so that the Friends could support a po- tential Community Park at Milton Road. Provision of a skatepark at the community park is an aspiration and to help find out if there is the demand amongst children and young people the Friends have organised a skatepark event at Orchard Park on Mayday Monday providing free lessons. The new Village Community Trishaw arrives in April following a successful fundraising effort and this will provide rides for older residents with volunteer riders. Full information on both charities available at www.hicom.org.uk and www.hirecfriends.org.uk New volunteers are always needed- please do consider becoming involved. Our thanks to Chris Cox for his help in producing this newsletter. Friends of the Rec Trustees – Edd Stonham, Vernon Dudley, Brian Ing, Neil Davies, Richard Martin, Greg Peck & David Wilson. The Village Wellbeing Week is a new idea and seeks to bring village residents of all ages to- gether with a number of different events to help find new ways to improve their wellbeing, find new activities to participate in and so help prevent problems that could manifest later. This week builds on the previous two mental wellbeing weeks but expands the scope to a more general themed village wellbeing week, with a broad range of different activities that should appeal to everyone in the community. There are different dimensions to wellbeing and this week will feature lots of activities that will help us to improve different aspects of our wellbeing. Note the programme was correct when this was printed, but for the latest updates see the website hiwellbeing.org.uk

The club has Clubmark status and the Recreation Ground (where we play all our home games) has two excellent pitches. Adult training will be on Thursdays 6-8pm starting after Easter. Adults should contact Steve Campin (Overall Club Cricket Captain) on 07951 462347. We are always seeking new members for our U9, U11, U13 U14 & U15 teams. Please see our website for confirmed timings for junior practice sessions. We will also be running the hugely popular All Stars Cricket Programme again this year. Sessions are likely to risks place on Sunday mornings. Histon & Impington Croquet Club Croquet is a fascinating and challenging game that requires skill and tactics rather than strength, and so can be played by men, women, young and old of all abilities – but most of all it is great fun! We play social games suitable for all standards. So do come along to try the game with the Histon and Impington Croquet Club who play on the Recreation Ground and are always keen to welcome new mem- bers. The croquet season starts in April and extends through the year until September. We play club ses- sions on most afternoons, weather permitting. We have 2 croquet lawns available for members to play at any time from 11am every day, and the club provides all the equipment needed allowing up to 16 people to play at a time. We play Mix’n’Match social games on the last Sunday of the month, with a bring and share meal under the shade of the maple trees – marvellous. Please see out website for more details at www.hicroquet.wordpress.com or email us at [email protected] or phone/text Duncan on 07857 600832

Histon & Impington Runners Histon and Impington Runners (HI RUNNERS) was established April 2014 when the Friends of the Rec teamed up with Neil Marsh Health and Fitness to form a non profit based running club for the local community. The running club welcomes all runners of any ability, male or female, to join them just for fun, to improve performance or to make running social. The running club saw 50 members join in its first 6 months and has gone from strength to strength since, seeing people improve their running ability and also making running fun and enjoyable. The Club now stand alone and are affiliated to UK Athletics. HI RUNNERS is a community running club for new and existing runners who would like to train and run with others in a fun and social group. It is a non-elitist club with all members making everyone feel welcome. HI RUNNERS meet on a Wednesday evening with a winter and summer schedule. The club also attends running events together from 5K up to marathon distances. Should you wish any other information please contact Neil Marsh: [email protected]
