The dental hygiene program at the Howard University College of Dentistry (HUCOD) is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) a division of the American Dental Association and is recognized by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADA) as an accredited dental hygiene institution.

The Howard University Dental Hygiene Program

Introduction

The dental hygiene program was established in the College of Dentistry in 1934, and graduated its first class in 1935. In 1947, educational requirements extended the curriculum to a two-year course of study. The program awards a Certificate in Dental Hygiene and is approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation 211 East Chicago Avenue, Chicago IL 60611-2678, 312-440-4653. The dental hygiene program is recognized as an accredited Dental Hygiene Institution by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association 444 North Michigan Avenue, Suite 3400, Chicago IL 60611, 312-440-8900. Graduates are eligible for licensure in all 50 states and the District of Columbia as well as foreign countries after satisfactory completion of the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and State or Regional Board Examinations.

Mission

The mission of the Howard University College of Dentistry Dental Hygiene Program is to provide graduates with competencies necessary for entry into the dental hygiene in the United States and in the global community. Moreover, the program is committed to providing educational opportunities to promising minority students with particular emphasis on attracting African-Americans.

Vision

The dental hygiene program recognizes the need for evidence-based paradigm shifts to address ongoing advancements in oral and changes in education . In the future, the Department of Dental Hygiene plans to offer a baccalaureate degree and baccalaureate degree-completion program. In addition, the program will broaden its curriculum base by increasing its interdisciplinary focus.

Goals

• To provide students and faculty with a nurturing educational environment • To maximize each students’ potential to become exceptional healthcare professionals • To educate future leaders able to collaborate inter-professionally • To recruit African-American and other minority students in order to increase minority enrollment • To participate in and support community activities, locally, nationally and internationally • To develop and implement faculty and student research programs

Admission Requirements

Prerequisite Degree The Dental Hygiene program awards a post certificate. All applicants must have an AS, AA, BS or BA degree (or within one semester of award of the degree).

Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) examination scores While grade point average (GPA) is an objective indicator of tools needed for success in the Dental Hygiene curriculum, the TEAS test is an objective predictor of strengths in English, reading comprehension, Mathematics and Science. It will assess readiness for the rigors of the curriculum in addition to preparedness.

The applicant must score 50% or higher in each section: Math Science English *The applicant may re-test up to 3 times a year with a 30-day waiting period

Prerequisite Courses Admission policy requires the following prerequisite science and general education courses. * Science prerequisite courses must include a laboratory and be completed at a GPA of 2.75 or greater and completed within five years prior to admissions.

+ General education prerequisite courses must be completed within ten years prior to admission.

Overall prerequisite courses must be completed at a GPA of 2.50 or greater.

Note: Prerequisite courses may be completed at other accredited post-secondary institutions. Transfer credits will be awarded for courses completed with a grade of “C” or better. Transfer students must submit official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended and be in good academic standing. Evaluation of an applicant’s qualifications is based on prerequisite course work, grade point average, scores from the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) exam, statement of interest, autobiographical sketch/essay, letters of recommendation and in-person interview.

Application Procedure

1. Complete the Howard University Undergraduate Admission (Common Application) Select: “Transfer” Select: “Certificate of Dental Hygiene”; if there is no drop down for Dental Hygiene, please wait 3 days and try again. Pay: admissions application fee online: $45.00 (US currency)

Type: www.howard.edu for Howard University’s homepage place cursor on “APPLY” then select ADMISSIONS and UNDERGRADUATE next, select “ADMISSION PROCESS” then “COMMON APPLICATION” From this point follow instructions provided on each page to complete the online COMMON APPLICATION. Make sure to upload all documents as requested. For the TEAS test, please upload the scores via in the “Other” area.

The application cycle is November 15, 2020 through February 15, 2021. The application deadline each academic year is February 15.

NOTE: To be a candidate for first selection of applicants, all prerequisite courses must be completed by the application deadline February 15th annually.

Classes begin in August. The Department begins accepting applications November 15th of each year.

The Howard University Dental Hygiene Program only enrolls at the beginning of each academic year (Fall semester). There is no rolling admission.

Keep a copy of your complete application packet for your records Just in case of the unforeseen incident (application lost in the mail, etc) it is highly recommended to keep a copy of all documents sent.

Autobiographical Essay

An autobiography is a writer's own true account of his or her life.

The information written in the autobiographical essay should not be restated in the statement of interest.

After the Dental Hygiene Admissions Committee approves an applicant’s application, the applicant will be contacted to schedule a formal interview with the Dental Hygiene Admissions Committee.

After formal interviews are completed the Howard University Dental Hygiene Admissions Committee will make their selection of applicants that will be offered admissions to the program. Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision within six (6) weeks of the formal interviews.

Please note that once a student is accepted into the program they must pay a non-refundable enrollment fee to secure their space in the class.

Transfer Student Admissions

A transfer student is considered to be any person who has been enrolled in a college or university other than Howard University, regardless of course load or earned credits. https://ous.howard.edu/transfer-students

*Admission criteria vary among Howard University's schools and colleges. As a transfer applicant, you must meet the following minimum requirements for Undergraduate Admission consideration: • 15 transferrable credit hours from a regionally accredited postsecondary institution • Earned a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and received a passing grade of C or better in both a college-level English and college-level Math course. • Transcripts must include grades through the applicant’s last semester of enrollment. • While the attainment of minimum credits is required for transfer consideration, acceptance is not guaranteed. • Additional credentials such as a high school transcript and SAT scores may be requested for admission.

The minimum standards for Undergraduate Admission consideration as a transfer student are:

• Received a passing grade of C or better in both a college-level English and college-level Math course • A minimum of 15 credits from an accredited post-secondary institution • Earned a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA)

International Student Admission

Howard University welcomes applications from international students as freshmen (first time enrolling at a university) or as transfer students. International students are advised to begin the admission process at least one year prior to the time they wish to enter the University because additional time is usually required for submission of required tests, academic documents, evaluations, and immigration-related matters. To apply to Howard University, international students must submit all materials by the following application deadline:

1. Application for Admission via the Common Application. Common App reports (College Report, Mid Year Report and Final Report) are not required. 2. Non-refundable $45.00 application fee. Payment is made via Common App (personal checks are not accepted). This application fee cannot be waived. 3. One letter of recommendation from a professor or an academic advisor submitted via Common App (upon assigning them as a recommender). You may not submit your recommender’s letter(s) on their behalf. Please use the ‘Check Status’ area to track your recommender’s submission. 4. Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions. An academic evaluation by a NACES member is required from all international student who have studied outside of the United States. All transcripts from non-US post secondary educational institutions must be sent directly to the evaluation agency by the issuing institution. This is a requirement before admission can be granted. The academic evaluation requirement cannot be waived. Moreover if your records are in a foreign language, an official English translation is required. We highly encourage you to select a NACES member with electronic delivery. We are currently able to receive evaluations electronically via ECE, IEE, WES (ICAP), and SpanTran. Evaluations will not be accepted via email/fax. For more detailed information on foreign transcript submissions to the Common App Processing Center, please visit this website. 5. U.S. College transcripts may be mailed (to the Common App Centralized Transcript Service) or submitted via an e-transcript system (e.g. Parchment, or the National Student Clearinghouse). If asked for the recipient’s email address (e-transcript systems only), please provide [email protected]. If your school does not have an e-transcript system, please mail your transcript to the Common app Centralized Transcript Service (see My Application->Academic History->Colleges Attended, for detailed instruction). If mailed to the Common App Centralized Transcript Service, upon receipt and processing, your transcript status can be viewed via the Common Application. Transcripts that have not been submitted to the Common App Centralized Transcript Service will not be visible via the ‘Check Status’ area on the Common App. Again, transcripts sent via fax/email or uploaded as an unofficial transcript will not be considered in our official review. We do not encourage you to submit official transcripts via mail directly to Howard University, as there may be delays in our receipt. 6. A score of 90 on the Internet based (IBT) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) are required for applicants whose native language is not English. Howard’s school code is 5297. Only official reports from ETS will be accepted. Note: in lieu of the TOEFL (if not offered in your country), applicants may submit results from IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with an overall score of a 6.5
