Tuttle University of Alaska Fairbanks In this paper, we describe the use of video stimuli for the targeted elicitation of negative directives in Denaakk’e (Koyukon) and Nee’andeegn’ (Upper Tanana), two severely endangered Alaskan Dene languages. Negative directives are extremely rare in our previously collected data, yet they exhibit a great variety of forms. Forms further seem to depend on several factors, particularly on whether the prohibited act violates social norms known as hʉtlaanee/įįjih. To better understand the variety of on-record and off-record forms, we created video clips showing activities violating hʉtlaanee/įįjih and activities that are merely foolish or mildly dangerous. After view- ing the clips, our consultants were asked to advise the actors as if they were their grandchildren. Their responses were discussed at length with the speakers. The speakers greatly enjoyed this task and produced a great variety of on-record and off- record responses including some unusual linguistic structures. In both languages, off- record expressions were preferred over direct ones, particularly in situations where hʉtlaanee/įįjih was involved. We also identified several conventionalized off-record strategies. The emphasis on hʉtlaanee/įįjih made the task interesting and relevant for speakers. While our stimuli are designed for work with Alaskan Dene, the method can be adapted for cultural contexts around the world. -

Marie Celebrates Youth Council’s 20 Anniversary On September 18 and 19, the Sault Ste. Marie Tribal Youth Council (TYC) 20-Year Anniversary Mini Conference & Celebration was held at the Kewadin Casino & Convention Center. It was a huge success with approximately 40 youth attending from across the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians service area. For the past 20 years, tribal youth grades 8-12 have taken on Childhood Obesity, Suicide and Bullying Prevention, Drug Abuse, and Domestic Violence in their communities. The Youth Council has produced PSAs, workshops, and presentations that have been done on local, tribal, state, and national levels and also hold the annual Bike the Sites event, a 47-mile bicycle ride to raise awareness on Childhood Obesity and its effects. TYC alumni provided testimony on their experiences with the youth council and how TYC has helped them in their walk in life. The celebration continued during the evening with approximately 100 community members expressing their support during the potluck feast and drum social held at the Sault Tribe’s Culture Building. -

Geoffrey Hull and Halyna Koscharsky1 Contours and Consequences of the Lexical Divide in Ukrainian When compared with its two large neighbours, Russian and Polish, the Ukrainian language presents a picture of striking internal variation. Not only are Ukrainian dialects more mutually divergent than those of Polish or of territorially more widespread Russian,2 but on the literary level the language has long been characterized by the existence of two variants of the standard which have never been perfectly harmonized, in spite of the efforts of nationalist writers for a century and a half. While Ukraine’s modern standard language is based on the eastern dialect of the Kyiv-Poltava-Kharkiv triangle, the literary Ukrainian cultivated by most of the diaspora communities continues to follow to a greater or lesser degree the norms of the Lviv koiné in 1 The authors would like to thank Dr Lance Eccles of Macquarie University for technical assistance in producing this paper. 2 De Bray (1969: 30-35) identifies three main groups of Russian dialects, but the differences are the result of internal evolutionary divergence rather than of external influences. The popular perception is that Russian has minimal dialectal variation compared with other major European languages. Maximilian Fourman (1943: viii), for instance, told students of Russian that the language ‘is amazingly uniform; the same language is spoken over the vast extent of the globe where the flag of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics flies; and you will be understood whether you are speaking to a peasant or a university professor. There are no dialects to bother you, although, of course, there are parts of the Soviet Union where Russian may be spoken rather differently, as, for instance, English is spoken differently by a Londoner, a Scot, a Welshman, an Irishman, or natives of Yorkshire or Cornwall. -

Possible New World Affiliations of the Neolithic Baikal People Ben R. Huelsman, Indiana University Of the few well-documented archaeological skeletal series of Siberia, the Neolithic Baikal Type "A" population is of considerable interest because of its widespread ramifications in both Siberia and northwestern North America. This Neolithic population was first described by the Russian physical anthropologist, G. F. Debetz as a result of his examina- tion of a series of skulls from the late neolithic of the Transbaikal region. It is apparent, as Debetz himself recognized, that this neolithic Siberian population resembles somewhat the contemporary Aleut. If the Pre-Aleuts are compared with the Baikal populations, however, the resemblances are even more striking. The Neolithic Baikal population and the Pre-Aleuts share the follow- ing traits: the vault is absolutely long, narrow, and low, the forehead is very sloping, the brow-ridges are moderate in development, and the cranial index is dolichocranial. For both groups the face is typically long and moderately broad in its absolute dimensions; both populations are lepto- prosopic, the upper facial index being mesene; the nasal index is leptor- rhine and the orbital index is hypsiconch. The later Aleut population differs from the Baikal people in being broader and shorter vaulted, the cranial index falling into the brachy- cranial index class. With reference to facial dimensions and profile, how- ever, the present-day Aleut are skeletally still quite close to the Siberian group. The Eskimo also disclose a facial similarity close to the Neolithic Baikal population, but these resemblances are limited to the face. The Neolithic Baikal population is characterized by an extremely low mean cranial height which is apparently due to platybasia, while the Eskimo are one of the most high vaulted groups in North America. -

Some are urbanized while others practice subsistence living. Still, there are fundamental relationships that have endured for thousands of years. One approach to understanding links between Alaska Native communities is to group them by language. This helps the student or researcher to locate related communities in a way not possible by other means. It also helps to define geographic areas in the huge expanse that is Alaska. Although it has been known for nearly 400 years, linguists are still debating about its role and function. This work seeks to synthesize what is already known about obviation and what is still unresolved.
