SETTING HISTORY STRAIGHT? INDONESIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY IN THE NEW ORDER A thesis presented to the faculty of the Center for International Studies of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Sony Karsono August 2005 This thesis entitled SETTING HISTORY STRAIGHT? INDONESIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY IN THE NEW ORDER by Sony Karsono has been approved for the Department of Southeast Asian Studies and the Center for International Studies by William H. Frederick Associate Professor of History Josep Rota Director of International Studies KARSONO, SONY. M.A. August 2005. International Studies Setting History Straight? Indonesian Historiography in the New Order (274 pp.) Director of Thesis: William H. Frederick This thesis discusses one central problem: What happened to Indonesian historiography in the New Order (1966-98)? To analyze the problem, the author studies the connections between the major themes in his intellectual autobiography and those in the metahistory of the regime. Proceeding in chronological and thematic manner, the thesis comes in three parts. Part One presents the author’s intellectual autobiography, which illustrates how, as a member of the generation of people who grew up in the New Order, he came into contact with history. Part Two examines the genealogy of and the major issues at stake in the post-New Order controversy over the rectification of history. Part Three ends with several concluding observations. First, the historiographical engineering that the New Order committed was not effective. Second, the regime created the tools for people to criticize itself, which shows that it misunderstood its own society. Third, Indonesian contemporary culture is such that people abhor the idea that there is no single truth. -
58 CHAPTER IV FINDINGS and DISCUSSIONS in This Thesis, The
CHAPTER IV FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS In this thesis, the writer analyzes Taufiq Ismail's two selected poems using a qualitative method, i.e. descriptive analysis. In Peirce's Triadic Semiotics analysis, Peircean Semiotics allows the writer to analyze the figurative language of the selected poems. In addition to that, the writer employs a Historical- Biographical approach. As a brief review, Peirce’s Triadic theory has three elements within. There are Representament, Interpretant, and Object. In presenting the analysis, the writer prefers to discuss and explain the Object before going to Interpretant for every part of sign-cracking and interpretations in her analysis. 4.1.Pierce Semiotics Approach Applied in Bagaimana Kalau This part provides a detailed introduction of Bagaimana Kalau poem and what Taufiq Ismail wrote down in his writings. This introduction is provided for those who have not read or seen any of Ismail's work before and to help them grasp an understanding on what certain issues Ismail is interested in and his style of writing poems. Analysis and discussions of this poem can be found starting from page 64. Bagaimana Kalau is a poem written by Taufiq Ismail in 1971. This poem tells about different kinds of realities and it also brings up some real events, e.g. Vietnam War, constant protests or strikes towards the government done by Indonesian citizens, people demanding for their civil rights, better facility, and domestic affairs improvement. There are many parables that Ismail uses in this poem. There are twelve separate verses begin with “what if”. Bagaimana Kalau 58 poem is not divided into stanzas. -

•d WAR UNLEASHED. A Plywood cut by Harjadi S., Bandung School of Fine Arts, 1968. WAR AND HUMANITY: NOTES ON PERSONAL EXPERIENCE* Usamah Translated by Helen Jarvis Editor’s Note War is a strange element in the civilization of modern man. In this day and age, modern men, from the time they are small, are taught to cultivate love for their fellow human beings. And yet war has never been eliminated from history, including the history of modern men, for war seems to be a necessary evil. In the face of war, where people kill one another, differ ent men experience different feelings: some feel exalted, others feel afraid. And one such man is Usamah, a writer. When the September Thirtieth Movement broke out, Usamah was one of those who actively defended his country against the Communists’ efforts to gain control over it. Thus Usamah was involved in a type of war--people around him were killing one another. All this was only to be expected. It was also only to be expected that Usamah, a writer, could not bear to see it; and, in the same way, it was only to be expected that there would be others quite capable of bearing it. A writer, who must always train himself to use his finer feelings, always to see the human beings around him as unique realities, to try always to empathize with and understand the problems of other men, cannot stop himself from feeling compassion for others, even though they may be categorized politically as his most dangerous enemies. -

The position of socialist realism: the opposing trends. T I n order to understand the struggle for cultural freedom in art 1^ and literature which came to a political climax in the events surrounding the Manifes Kebudajaan (Manikebu) (1963), it is necessary first of all to take a brief look at the development and character of the social realist strand of modern Indonesian literature. The revolutionary spirit in art and literature which appeared to characterise Chairil Anwar and his generation was in no way a unified rejection of the old and a common belief for the future. Indeed, when Chairil died in 1949, and the dynamic influence of his personality was removed from literary circles, the cohesion of the so-called Angkatan 45 fell apart. Writing as an expression of life and individuality, which Chairil had been able to inspire through his own example, gave way to the need to devise theories of art and creativity. An attempt was made by those who had followed Chairil, known collectively as the Gelenggang artists,1 to formulate his ideals into a declaration of belief, the Surat Kepertjajaan Gelenggang, which was issued on 18th February, 1950. -

Introduction National Literature, Regional Perspective
CHAPTER I Introduction National literature, regional perspective Indonesia’s literary world is heterogeneous, but based on language use and form its literature can be broadly divided into two sections: national literature and regional literature. National literature, also known as modern Indonesian literature, is that which is written in the Indonesian language, while regional literature is written in regional languages such as Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese and Buginese. The term ‘regional literature’ is ambiguous, because apart from referring to literature written in regional languages, it is also used somewhat pejoratively to refer to literature in Indonesian that originates at a regional rather than a national level. In this context, the term regional literature is defi ned in ‘a negative way as being of appeal only to restricted audiences’ (Kratz 1991:193). Similarly, the term ‘regional writers’ often has an inferior connotation when comparison is made with ‘writers from the centre’ – a term that refers to writers who live in the capital, Jakarta (formerly Batavia), have been nationally recognized or have written work regarded as part of the Indonesian literary canon. Both regional literature and its writers are considered, in post-colonial terminology, as ‘an inferior Other’ (Newton 1997:283). The study of Indonesian literature continues to concentrate predominantly on its canon, a body of work written by nationally recognized writers and published in Jakarta – the political, economic and cultural centre of Indonesia. Good examples of this are the intensely studied novels of Pramoedya Ananta Toer and more recently those of Seno Gumira Ajidarma and Ayu Utami. Studies that focus on this canon exclude much signifi cant work I Nyoman Darma Putra - 9789004253636 Downloaded from Brill.com09/27/2021 08:06:50PM via free access 2 A literary mirror from outside the capital and reinforce the idea that Jakarta is the centre of all literary activity (Sumardjo 1979 cited in Hellwig 1994:4; Hill 1993:246-7, 253).
