VJERA STEVOVICH VUKCEVICH 25 August 1940 – 13 January 2014 INTRODUCTION HE ESSAYS IN Croatia 4: Baron Kulmer, Ban Jelacic, General T Nugent, Colonel Nugent, Dorfweiser Ante, Rex Quadroni, Bishop Strossmayer attempt to establish a broad, deep and penetrating context for factually and fairly analyzing, understanding and measuring the role of institutions and individuals in the 19th century Croat Revival generally and the roles of Ludwig von Gaj, General Laval Nugent and Colonel Albert Nugent particularly. The author believes that a fair reading of the facts requires a reinterpretation of the 19th century Croat Revival based on the pivotal roles played by Ludwig von Gaj, General Laval Nugent and Colonel Albert Nugent. The author also believes that 1) a fair reading of the record establishes the role of General Laval Nugent as a real and equitable way to measure the roles played by his Croat peers, and 2) the Laval Nugent measure requires a radical devaluation of Ante ‘Vlah’ Starcevic, Eugenio ‘Rex’ Quadroni-Kvaternik and other self-styled 19th century Croat leaders. If, for example, one compares ‘pater patria’ Ante ‘Vlah’ Starcevic with General Laval Nugent in terms of intelligence, knowledge, wisdom, judgment, integrity, honor, decency, manliness and martial spirit, the two are so different that it is hard to believe they belong to the same species or occupy the same planet. As C.A. Macartney’s “crack-brained, exalte, lunatic, super-fanatical Catholic”, characterization of Eugenio ‘Rex’ Quadroni-Kvaternik is obviously a polite understatement, it is safe to say that ‘Rex’ is far below comparison with either Nugent on the one side or any disreputable political figure outside Croatia at the other extreme. The same can be said about Starecevic’s successor of sorts, Josip Frank, the Liberal Godfather of modern Serbicides. Part One introduces the reader to basic issues relating to 1) Ludwig von Gaj’s role in the Croat Revival and 2) Croatia’s role in Croatia’s history. Part Two reviews the role of Austrian institutions and officials in the Croat Revival. Part Three introduces the reader to General Laval 13 Nugent and Colonel Albert Nugent. Part Four examines the positive and negative roles played by the Church in the Illyrian Movement. Part Five discusses the basic issues and challenges raised by the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. Part Six calls attention to 1) the role played by General Josip Neustadter in victories over Croat resistance to Ban Jelacic in Croatia and Slavonia, and 2) the extraordinary role played by patriotic Serbs in Croatia and Slavonia. Part Seven reviews Baron Franz Kulmer’s reactionary ideals and his supreme control of Croatia’s policies under Ban Josip Jelacic. Part Eight examines basic issues relating to Ban Jelacic’s personality, character, competence and national identities. Part Nine reviews 1) Ban Jelacic’s role in the war with Hungary and 2) and General Nugent’s role in the validation of Illyrian and Yugoslav values in Croatia and Slavonia. Part Ten deals with Jelacic’s banship in terms of 1) personality, mental health and policy issues, and 2) the exceptional role played by Serbs in defense of Croatia and Slavonia and their robust advocacy of basic social, economic and political reforms. Part Eleven provides a documentary basis for the national and social character of Lika. Part Twelve reviews national identity issues relating to the Bunjevci. Part Thirteen examines Ante ‘Vlah’ Starcevic’s politics of hatred and his relations with the infamous Josip Frank. Part Fourteen reviews Starcevic’s relations with his followers and measures his Likan identity by comparing him with Likan Bude Budisavljevic Prijedorski. Part Fifteen examines the bizarre life and pathetic times of “crack-brained, exalte, lunatic, super-fanatical Catholic” Eugenio “Rex” Quadroni. Part Sixteen examines the psychological and political dynamics of pater patria Starcevic’s relations with Bishop Strossmayer, the first son of the nation.

Strossmayer University of Osijek, Osijek, Croatia SUMMARY – Th e history of Croatian urology clearly shows its affi liation to the medical and civilizational circle of the Western world. Th e Department of Urology at the Sestre milosrdnice Uni- versity Hospital Center is the oldest urology institution in the Republic of Croatia. Th e Department was established in 1894, when the new Sestre milosrdnice Hospital was open in Vinogradska cesta in Zagreb. It was then that doctor Dragutin Mašek founded the so-called III Department, which, in addition to treating urology patients, also treated patients with conditions of the ear, nose and throat, eye diseases and dermatologic conditions. Dragutin Mašek had already realized that medicine would soon be divided into fi elds and had assigned younger doctors joining the III Department to specifi c fi elds. As a result, urology was given to Aleksandar Blašković, who founded the fi rst independent de- partment of urology in Croatia in 1926. In 1927, he was appointed Professor of urology at the Zagreb School of Medicine, where he established the fi rst department of urology and was giving lectures and practicals.

  • Trajectories of Croatian Jesuit Historiography Brnardic, Teodora Shek
From Acceptance to Animosity: Trajectories of Croatian Jesuit Historiography Brnardic, Teodora Shek Teodora Shek Brnardić [email protected] Last modified: March 2018 Introduction The emergence of a Croatian historiography of the Society of Jesus took place in the often virulently anti-Jesuit and anti-clerical atmosphere that was prevalent in Croatia in the second half of the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century. This period represented a historical crisis for the Jesuit order in Croatia, one that provoked controversies that were largely absent in the pre-suppression period, unlike in many other countries where such disputes had existed ever since the sixteenth century. In 1932, Miroslav Vanino, S.J. (1879–1965) launched a scholarly journal entitled Vrela i prinosi: Zbornik za povijest isusovačkog reda u hrvatskim krajevima (Sources and contributions: Collected papers on the history of the Jesuit order in the Croatian lands),1 which marked a turning point in the creation of a Croatian Jesuit historiography. In doing so, Vanino intended to revise the prevailing view of the pre-suppression Jesuits, who were often accused of behaving in an “anti-national” way. This latter view had become widespread among the educated Croatian elite, particularly during the Austro-Hungarian fin-de-siècle. Vanino’s journal accordingly sought to correct this politically biased interpretation of the Jesuits’ role in Croatian history with articles written by both Jesuit and non-Jesuit contributors.2 The journal would provide the foundation for a source-based, critical history of the Society of Jesus in the Croatian lands and of its relations with the Croats.

TOMISLAV FALETAR Jordanovac 81a HR – 10 000 Zagreb [email protected] Cilj ovoga rada je na temelju postojeće literature i novina prikazati i objasniti politički put književnika, pjesnika i političara Mirka Bogovića (1816.-1893.), posebice njegov put od „vatrenog“ pristaše ilirskog pokreta do čvrstog uni- onista poslije 1860. godine. Bogović tada postaje zagovornik dualizma i što jačeg vezivanja Hrvatske unutar Ugarskog kraljevstva, čak do potiranja njenih skromnih državnopravnih i financijskih okvira u toj zajednici nejednakih. Na kraju rada nalazi se devet pisama koja se tiču Bogovićevog književnog i političkog rada iz preporodnog i neoapsolutističkog razdoblja. Ona su ovdje priložena jer djelomično pokazuju Bogovićev materijalni položaj te njegov temperament i ka- rakter, što korespondira s temom ovog rada. Ključne riječi: Mirko Bogović, ilirski pokret, mađaroni, Unionistička stranka, Hrvatski sabor 1861., mađarizacija 1.
