Trampolining Trophies and Medals After success at the Southern Zonal Championships, our U19 and U15 Girls’ Novice teams, made the long journey to Newcastle for the National Finals. First to compete were the Under 15 team who each performed with style and scored well. When the scores were revealed there was a double celebration - Haygrove had won Bronze in both the team and individual events! Another Haygrove star, Jayme, saved her best performances for her final too, and was crowned National Champion in her category! The Under 19’s competition was very close and despite some outstanding routines by the squad, the girls were unable to clinch a place on the podium, but should be very proud of their 5th Team placing and 7th in the Individual Competition. Cooking Club After learning about Jon Drama Club Burgerman, the UK born, Sax Group New York-based artist, in their Art lessons, Year 8 students Year 8 Band had the chance to decorate Jazz Club the patio outside their Art classroom Keyboard Club with chalk illustrations of characters they had created, Soul Band inspired by the Textiles Club famous cartoon Open Art Studio artist. After posting about it on Facebook, they were pleased to get a comment back from Jon himself!

Kenyan Choir Captivates All! Over 1000 students squeezed into the Sports Hall to experience a unique and highly memorable preview performance by the talented Kenyan choir “The Singing Children of Africa”. The 20 plus Kenyan singers, all aged between 10 and 15, also joined in with regular lessons and a Year 7 music workshop where musical tastes, talents and heritage were shared. The talented Kenyan students then provided a high-energy and inspirational afternoon of music and dance. WE ARE INTERNATIONAL!

Our links with overseas schools, such as the Yew Wah School in Shanghai and the Mawanda Basic School in Zambia, provide opportunities for our students to broaden their horizons through real contact with students of other nationalities. Joint activities, visits and fundraising events all generate discussion and encourage a positive attitude to other cultures.

Some of our Year 10 students took part in the annual Youth Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition. The talented Haygrove youngsters spoke about raising awareness of mental Speaks health and about the current refugee crisis. In preparation, the girls underwent coaching with English teacher Mr Jones who said: “The teams worked exceptionally hard to research and prepare for this challenging event. They were a credit to themselves and to the school.”

Our Year 8 students were set the task of A Cracking Day of designing and building an egg-carrying, air-powered vehicle and then Learning tested their creations to measure how far it would travel and whether it would protect an egg during flight and landing. The challenge was set at a dedicated STEM Day held at the school in partnership with EDF Energy and STEMworks. Students were introduced to the key scientific and technical concepts involved in the challenge and then worked in small teams to develop their own solutions. Trial runs enabled the students to figure out what adjustments were needed and it was then time to see which performed the best.

A team of five Year 8 students took part in the Faraday Challenge sponsored by Ben Ainsley Racing (BAR) and Land Rover and held at . The competing groups from Chilton Trinity, , Danesfield School, Robert Blake Science College and Haygrove School were given the challenge of programming a Microbit computer interface to record data that would enable feedback to be received about boat performance, crew performance and the environment in which the boat was racing.Their team work, programming capabilities and presentation skills were excellent and led to them being declared the winners! Duke of Edinburgh Achievers Following months of dedication and hard work, 75 students accepted their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards from Marjorie Rigby and Duke of Edinburgh Chaplain Rev Chris Brown. The group have completed multiple challenges in order to obtain this prestigious award, including volunteer work, learning new skills and a overnight expedition which was reminisced with fond memories on the night.

Unsung Heroes Year 11 student, Lauren wanted to find a way to recognise and reward students in her year group who make a positive contribution to school life but often go unnoticed. Each half term, during an Assembly, Lauran ensured the Year 11 students nominated an ’unsung hero’, giving a clear reason why they should be rewarded with a box of Heros and a certificate.
