ANNUAL REPORT

SEASON 2016/17

Page 7 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 138th Annual Report and Financial Statement

PRESIDENT'S REPORT The 2016/17 season was successful both on and off the field with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th XI’s all reaching the finals in men’s cricket. The women’s 1st XI was also successful by finishing in the finals and winning the T20 competition. The club hosted several excellent and profitable functions including Maddie’s Shield, a women’s Big Bash match, a President’s Lunch and the Stonnington Gift. The club also hosted a successful match between the Vanuatu National men’s team and Prahran past players at Toorak Park. The club’s financial position is now relatively strong with retained earnings and cash holdings, although the continuing challenge will be to generate further sustainable revenue sources. We are very appreciative of the time, expertise and resources from coaches, committee persons and office bearers, sponsors, supporters and our invaluable volunteers. Good luck to the incoming President and committee and success to all teams in the 2017/18 season.

John Salter.

ADMINISTRATION MANAGER'S REPORT The cricket season came and went far too quickly. There were various challenges that had to be overcome during that time however it was fantastic to see the three lower XI’s and the women’s P1 team participate in the finals. Some other highlights during the season were:

 The inaugural Maddie’s Shield match between the women’s P1 team vs Box Hill on the 14th December. A sub-committee worked on this event for several months which culminated in a fantastic T20 game under lights at Toorak Park. A huge amount of work went into making the event a success and a big thank you to Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision CEO Nicky Long’s team, our players who volunteered on the day and Lyndal Warne for her enormous effort managing the BBQ.

Despite the very cool night for December, we managed to raise much needed funds to go towards Maddie’s Vision which was established to fund medical research into finding a cure for Bone Marrow Failure syndromes.

 Another successful Christmas Drive for Prahran Mission – thank you to players, parents, committee and supporters who donated goods and toys for Christmas hampers provided to under-privileged families in the Stonnington area.

 The WBBL game between the Stars and Perth Scorchers held at Toorak Park on the 5th January. Another huge effort put in by a small band of volunteers from the club.

 The women’s P1 Twenty20 Final between Prahran and Box Hill held at the Bill Lawry Oval on Saturday, 4th February which saw our girls win the premiership.

 The President’s Lunch held on Sunday, 12th February where over 90 people attended at Toorak Park. It was great to see many ex-players there and everyone was treated to hilarious entertainment from Andrew Startin. Thanks to Angela Rogers, Leanne Wilcox, Jenny Salter and Gayle Howard for volunteering to provide a delicious 2 course lunch.

 Various social activities successfully run by the players such as the i-pod shuffle and reverse draw events.

 End of season presentation night held at the Bentleigh RSL on the 21st April which was well supported with over 90 past and present players, parents, committee and supporters attending. Another major event was the 7th annual running of the Stonnington Gift held at Toorak Park on the 17th February 2017. The weather was reasonable and a very good size crowd attended. Some of the country’s finest athletes attended and for the first time, from the semi-finals onwards, the event was live streamed in addition to live broadcast and replays on the scoreboard at Toorak Park.

Page 9 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 138th Annual Report and Financial Statement

Now widely regarded as the next best athletic event in Victoria only behind the Stawell Gift, a special thanks to the Organising Committee which included:  Chairman – (Sir) Peter Norman  Secretary – Phil Williamson  Victorian Athletics League Liaison – Andrew Muhlhan  Event Organisation – John Zarb  Grant Smethurst (City of Stonnington)  Michael Costello / John Stewart (Video Production) In addition, thank you to all the players, officials and coaches that assisted. We were witness to another outstanding contribution from the Warne family led by Lyndal Warne who ran and worked on the BBQ for the entire night.

This successful event resulted in a contribution close to $20,000 towards the club. We would like to acknowledge the wonderful support of our 2017 sponsors, who without them, the event would just not be possible to hold: - East Malvern Community Bank Branch – 300 Waverley Road, East Malvern - The City of Stonnington – We thank the Councillors and all the management team for their support including Grounds man Mitch Hewitt and Lauren Dick from Recreation Services. - Lend Lease - John Blair Honda - Asahi Breweries & Schweppes - Prahran Market - Active Feet - Prahran Grocer At the end of the season Christine Seymour and Rosemary Schlittler indicated that they would not be continuing with the lunches and afternoon teas for the First XI in 2017/18. The club would like to thank Chris and Rosemary for their years of service and the best lunches and afternoon teas in men’s premier cricket! We hope to continue to see Chris and Rosemary on the hill enjoying the cricket.

I would also like to thank Leanne and Brett Wilcox, John Raglus and John Salter for their assistance at Selection Night dinners; Lauren Dick and Mitch Hewitt from the City of Stonnington; Peter Binns, Mike Ronchi and Erini Gianakopoulos from Cricket Victoria; James Higgs and Karl Hieser for their scoring of 1st and 2nd XI games; Nigel Hutton for his magnificent photos which you will see throughout this report; Adam Bull for his efforts and time put into the male and female player clothing; and John Salter and my fellow PCC committee members for their support during the season.

I wish the new Prahran CC coaching team and players every success in season 2017/18.

Susan Frances

OBITUARIES

Tom McLean (Cap # 288) Tom played six games as an 18 year old in the First XI season of 1959/60. Tom was an off-spin bowler who started out as a medium pacer in the lower XI’s before changing and achieving more success as a spinner.

Ian Langford (Cap # 351) Ian was an opening batsman who played 18 games for Prahran between 1970/71 and 1971/72. He scored 458 runs at 24.10 with a highest score of 92. Tom O’Hanlon (Cap #284) Tom O’Hanlon played 18 games over 7 seasons for Prahran. Geoff Minster Geoff was a long-standing Prahran True Blue who supported the club in many ways over a long period of time. Geoff served a number of years as Administration Manager and First XI Team Manager and rarely missed a game in the last decade. He could usually be found on the hill at the northern end of Toorak Park supporting Prahran with club legends John Malligan and David Jukes. Jean Wild For more than 10 years, Jean, together with husband Steve, Uncle Robert and the rest of the Wild family were active and passionate supporters of James and the club. Rarely a Saturday went by without some if not all of the family were there supporting James on the field. So to lose Jean on the 30th April after a courageous battle with cancer was not only a tragic loss for the Wild family but for the club.

The Club extends its sympathies to all those who experienced bereavements through the course of the season.

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS On the night, Sam Coates and Steven De Bolfo were made Life Members of the Club. Sam Coates Sam announced his retirement at the end of the season which brought about the end of an era and a distinguished career record that will surely stand along for many years to come. Not one to put himself ahead of the team, Sam rates the 2011/12 One Day and Twenty20 Premierships as highlights of his time at Prahran. He considers himself fortunate to have played with the likes of Chris Rogers, David Hussey, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Jason Arnberger, Jon Moss, Bryce McGain and Julien Wiener amongst many others. Sam’s record speaks for itself: Career 2004/05 – 2016/17 Seasons 10 Matches 186 10th highest in club history Innings 165 Not outs 36 Runs 2,755 Highest score 145 Average 21.03 100’s 4 50’s 9 Catches 269 Includes one catch as a fielder Stumpings 63 keeping dismissals 331 A club record Matches as captain 83 3rd highest in club history

Steven De Bolfo Bolf made his First XI debut as a 17 year old in round 9 2002/03 against the Monash Tigers. He was a regular in the top order by 2008/09 and played consistently in the firsts through the next six seasons scoring over 600 runs on a number of occasions. Bolf was a consistent and elegant stroke player and a great mentor to the many young players he played with over the years. His four First XI centuries and 21 half centuries were accompanied by five more centuries and numerous half centuries in the lower grades. Bolf’s First XI record:

Career 2002/03 to 2015/16 Seasons 13 Matches 147 Innings 162 Not outs 30 Runs 3,616 Highest score 164 Average 27.39 Centuries 4 Half-centuries 21 Catches 45 (including 5 as a wicket keeper Keeping dismissals 6

COACHS’ REPORTS Club Coach Season 2016/17 was overall a successful one for the club with 4 out of our 6 male and female teams making finals with the WP1's securing the T20 title. We improved our finish in the Club Championship both by points achieved and our placing of equal 6th despite the contribution of the 1st XI being lower than previous years.

Statistically every team improved in the club except for the Men's First XI who missed the finals for the first time in a number of seasons. While this team is a little in transition with some senior players coming towards the end of their Premier careers and the younger ones commencing, the talent was there to be more than competitive at the business end of the season. It hurts not to makes finals and fight for the opportunity to win a flag. We all take responsibility and look to improve on what we can do to ensure we are back challenging.

Overall post-Christmas performances of teams at Prahran has been best described as average. We have a reputation of knocking off when the new year arrives and hence our finals efforts have been below par for the talent that has existed at the club. This was always going to be the challenge as a coaching group. In the past two seasons with a number of new players at the club, we put measures in place to reverse what has been a historical anchor to success. This season across the four grades, we won 15 games, drew one and lost 4. A 75% win ratio, the next best is 56% in the past 10 seasons. Part of this is attempting to do the basics right and monotonously training them. Positively the 2nd XI, 3rd XI and 4th XI all competed in finals with the 2nds & 4ths falling at the semi-final hurdle. We are heading in the right direction.

The life of the normal cricketer’s journey takes time. The exceptional player will always achieve milestones earlier. This is a combination of talent, work ethic and the ability to listen and learn and not repeat mistakes. The tough part of today’s world is that we are instantaneous people and we want things now. The greatest example in our club of a person willing to continue on his journey, not comparing himself to anyone except himself, looking to improve at every session he does so he walks away satisfied with his efforts - is Adam Hutton. Whatever your dreams, have Adam's attitude and you will go a long way to achieve them as he's a great role model and deserves his season on season improvement. Another has been Travis Jackson who responded magnificently to the challenge put in front of him at the end of last season. His turn around was rewarded with his maiden First XI hundred. It's great to see a player respond in the right way when challenged.

Cricket is such a hard game - we actually fail more than we succeed – it’s how the game is. Players who are able to play their role for the team and stick to it, will have the most success over the journey. When we move away from what we do well and become something we are not, you as an individual suffers, as does the team. This is not always a deliberate action, but it’s only upon reflection that we can sometimes see the reality of it all.

Thank you to the assistant coaches, Bryce McGain, Carl Sandri, Ajay Bhatt and Dimitri Mascarenhas for your efforts. To those that engaged with the coaches and sought advice and knowledge got great benefit from them all. Players who are challenged by any coach is for only one reason - to help the player get better and to become the best they can be.

Page 20 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 138th Annual Report and Financial Statement

To the Captains, Steve Seymour, Sam Coates, Bryce McGain, Ajay Bhatt and Darren Warne thank you for your commitment. Late Tuesday selection nights, debating, discussing and working through every imaginable scenario is not an easy task nor is it popular at times. Having the stability in the leadership positions this year was successful and went a long way towards the teams making the finals. Congratulations to Ajay for winning the 3rd XI Victorian Premier Cricketer of the Year - a wonderful achievement.

Congratulations too to Carl Sandri and Dave Williams for the improved performances of the Women's teams, capped off with a WP1 T20 title. Individually, Kath Hempenstall was named as WP1 T20 Player of the Year and was also named in the WP1 Premier Team of the Year along with Jess Cameron, Alana King and Emma Inglis. Emma was also named Captain. Well done to all.

Thank you to the Board, the volunteers and the supporters who make life easier for everyone to enjoy their time at Prahran. Next season presents another set of challenges. Embrace them.

Peter Di Venuto

Women's Coach

Season 2016/17 was the season the Prahran girls began to deliver on the potential within the playing group by not only bringing home the first premiership as Prahran Cricket Club, but also by being minor premier across both formats. This still leaves us room for improvement whilst putting the Premier Cricket competition on notice of things to come from the team and club.

The Season saw the girls collect their first trophy since the merger three seasons ago and was not only great reward for the players, parents and off field contributors from the original Brunswick Park CC, but also to those at Prahran CC who were instrumental to bringing the club to Toorak Park and sticking to the project through the initial merger period. Across the entire group of players, coaches, support staff, family and supporters we absolutely enjoyed the success of both the team and individuals over the season, but now that we’ve had a taste of team success as a club we’re all more driven than ever to go about creating a culture and dynasty at the club that will leave a legacy long after the current group of players and support staff’s time is done.

There were many individual efforts to celebrate and be proud of, namely those of our representatives in State, WBBL and National teams (senior and junior players alike). The club was fortunate enough to have another player of the competition award winner, Kathleen Hempenstall, the Victorian Premier Cricket T20 Player of the Season, backing up from Jess Cameron’s Una Paisley Medal the previous season. Our new English overseas player, Tara Norris, stepped up when it mattered most and her performance saw her win the Player of the Match award in our T20 final triumph. Our success as a team also led to there being four of our players being selected in the Victorian Premier Cricket Team of the Year; Emma Inglis (C ), Jess Cameron, Kathleen Hempenstall and Alana King.

There were many individual highlights throughout the season like centuries from Jess Cameron and Emma Inglis (T20) as well as great bowling spells from all of the bowlers but especially from Alana King who took the one 5fa but was often just too good for opponents; Tara Norris’ three wickets in the T20 final and Bronwyn Daws who produced the quickest spell of bowling we’d seen all season in the Semi Final. To top the season off we were extremely proud to be introducing many young talented players to the First XI like Rosie Wynd and Tiana Atkinson, giving them a taste of what it takes to mix it and compete with the best senior players that Victoria has to offer.

A defeat in the semi-final of the 50/50 format left us flat as we are all aware of the cricketing capabilities within the group, however it’s these setbacks and results that not only leave us room for improvement, but the hurt and learning’s from such experiences bring the group closer together and motivate us moving forward.

The club was again the beneficiary of strong leadership from Captain Emma Inglis. Emma has been at the forefront of the team delivering on its potential and believes there is more team and individual success to come with the talent we have at the club. She again demonstrated her ability to focus on the task at hand by ensuring everything ran smoothly on game days even if her preparation at times may have been hectic due to her Vic Spirit and Melbourne Stars commitments. With her State and WBBL duties affecting us at times, Kathleen Hempenstall stood up to fulfil captaincy duties in Emma’s absence and she did so very well, pushing high standards at training and games and keeping the continuity of team plans in all contests. Both captains did an outstanding job throughout the season ensuring the playing group were always developing individually, moving forward collectively and learning to play their role within the team.

During the season it was great to see Prahran girls play representative for both state and country. Alana King (Australian Shooting Stars) (Captain) & Rosie Wynd (Cricket Australia u/18 XI) represented Australia in their various competitions throughout the season; we had senior State and WBBL representatives – playing in the Victoria Spirit and Melbourne Stars double were Emma Inglis, Jess Cameron and Alana King. Gemma Triscari, the T20 specialist, was again a key part of the Melbourne Stars squad and Annabel Sutherland stepped up into the big leagues for her debut season as a 15yo being a member of the above mentioned players cross town rivals, the Melbourne Renegades. These girls all gave great accounts of themselves in their respective teams across the season. They were great ambassadors of the Prahran Cricket Club on the professional circuit.

We also had junior state representatives in Annabel Sutherland (Captain of Vic U/16 metro) and Tiana Atkinson (Captain of Vic U/16 Country). There were also numerous girls that represented their pathway teams in the state championships across all age groups. This was a fantastic achievement and potentially a starting point to future state and national representation through hard work and commitment.

It was a privilege to be able to coach and work with this group of girls across what is a long season (when you consider some players began working on their games as early as July) and hopefully all of the players that I have had the opportunity to mentor have not only enjoyed their time in the program but have developed as cricketers and more importantly as people.

The talent and potential on display throughout the season was exciting to say the least and together we look forward to setting our sights on further success as a club and as individuals as well as raising expectations again on our quest as being not only the most successful women’s Premier Cricket Club, but also the club of choice for talented players around Victoria. There’s no question all of the girls are excited at the challenges that lie ahead and are all prepared to do whatever it takes across the winter months and through pre-season to better themselves individually for the good of the team as we hunt more success in season 2017/18.

I’d like to thank the entire club for the support of the Women’s program across the WP1 and WP2 teams. We all understand the benefits that are afforded to the club and its people with full integration of a women and men’s program and we are no doubt looking to stay leaders of the pack in that regard.

To first year President, John Salter (and his committee), for his persistent drive, support and efforts to making this program a success - thank you. Club Coach, Peter Di Venuto, for being not only a great support to myself but also to the girls in their quest for personal improvement and team success - grazie mille! Susan, for being on top of all of the administrative duties that are required to keep the club going and to our much loved and appreciated scorer James Higgs who did so much for us throughout the season and deserves another big thank you, an awesome club person and part of what makes PCC so special!

Another big thank you must go to our women’s Cricket Co-coordinator and Second XI Coach David Williams. We no doubt experienced some testing times throughout the season but his consistent efforts to make all things women’s cricket `work’ cannot be underestimated. Finally to all on the men’s side of the club - thank you for any work or guidance you have given the girls over the course of the season and to anyone else that helped out behind the scenes, such a program wouldn’t be successful without everyone’s assistance.

CAPTAINS' REPORTS Men's 1st Eleven The 2016/17 season is one that will be remembered ultimately as a disappointing one after having gone so close to the ultimate prize in the previous season. What it does show is the evenness of the competition and that nothing can be taken for granted.

After a strong first up win in Round 1 we then found ourselves on the wrong end of some tight games through the block of One-Day games, these were games that we had found a way to win in previous years and these dropped points would come back to bite us. Our 20/20 performances were again not at the standard we expected and is a form of the game we need to continue to get better at given the amount of points on offer in this form.

Our 2 – Day Cricket was inconsistent, some poor loses to Dandenong and Melbourne Uni were mixed in with strong performances and despite a late season rally with an outright over Greenvale and another near miss in the last round against Casey South Melbourne we weren’t able to make up the ground we had lost throughout the season.

The frustration will be that we know we are a talented enough group to contend with any team and this is proven by the fact we beat the eventual premiers Fitzroy-Doncaster during the season. The next step for the group is to become consistent performers week in and week out.

Despite not having the team success this year, there was a number of individuals who performed extremely well across the season. Adam Hutton’s development continued and he has now become a consistent frontline fast bowler at 1st team level. Evan Gulbis came into the club and immediately showed everyone why he has forged a successful First-Class career. Evan was a great asset on and off the field with his knowledge of the game and willingness to pass this on to the group. Evan’s innings of 98* off 39 balls against Frankston will long be remembered.

Shaun Miller produced a very rare double hundred against Geelong, which again showed the ability that Shaun has, and the challenge for Shaun now is to become one of the dominant batsman in the Competition which is what he should be.

Nathan McNally again dominated in the 20/20 format and was rewarded with an opportunity in NZ, unfortunately injury prevented him from playing but we hope for his sake the chance comes again next year.

Once again this season as a 1st XI we were blessed to have amazing support from Coaches, Volunteers and Families. Our thanks to the below people: • Peter Di Venuto and his coaching group. • James Higgs, the best scorer in the business. • Christine Seymour and Rosemary Schlittler for once again spoiling us with the best Lunches and Teas in the Competition. • Our hard working committee led by John Salter for their support of the playing group. • Our families, friends and supporters. We are very lucky to have great support wherever we play and this is never taken for granted.

I would also like to acknowledge the retiring Sam Coates. Sam has been an unbelievable servant of PCC but more so he has been an outstanding player. He has consistently been the best keeper in the comp for 10 years and his ability to score big lower order runs is often underestimated. I would like to thank Sam for all his help and guidance over the years and also for taking over as Captain when I was absent from the team this year.

We wish Sam and his family all the best for the next chapter, and hope to see them around PCC as often as possible.

Personally I would like to thank Peter and the Club for their ongoing support in what was a challenging year for me due to injury and poor form. I again feel privileged to be captain of this great club and I look forward to the challenges that await in 2017/18.

Women's 1st Eleven 2016-17 was a fantastic season for the Women’s Premier Firsts. The team finished as minor premiers in both T20 and One-day competitions and were eventual T20 champions.

The team was guided through the season under the expertise of Carl Sandri. Carl’s enthusiasm and ability to connect with the players and get the best out of them went a long way to topping the table in both competitions. Carl’s love of the game and keenness to improve the skill and knowledge of the girls was greatly appreciated by all. It was however Carl’s ability to run enjoyable sessions and build team belief which were most loved by the team.

Throughout the year there were some outstanding performances. One consistently good performer throughout the year was Kath Hempenstall. Kath ended up being rewarded with the T20 player of the year for the entire competition. I would like to also personally thank and commend Kath on her efforts as vice-captain and stepping up on occasions when I was unavailable to play. Kath was our leading wicket taker in both formats and sat within the top 4 run scorers for both formats too.

This year saw Naomi Dattani return from England and also a new international player came across in Tara Norris. Both internationals were great contributors to the team in both performance and culture, with Tara also gaining player of the final in the T20 final.

The T20 season also allowed us to support the Maddie Riewoldt Foundation with the inaugural Maddies Match against Box Hill. It was a hard fought game under lights and was able to raise great funds for the foundation.

A special mention must go to Jess Cameron for her early season form along with Annabel Sutherland. Both openers got the team off to a great start to the season. Unfortunately after Christmas Jess was lost to us to pursue her AFL dream and Annabel unfortunately was lost to injury.

Alana King had a standout year with the ball and was rewarded with both a VicSpirit debut and selection in the Australian Shooting Stars squad. Both selections were a great reward for her hard work and effort.

Post-Christmas there was a great effort from everyone involved, winning the last 3 games heading into finals. Unfortunately a poor start in the final set us back and we couldn’t quite recover despite a spirited hard fought effort with the ball.

On behalf of the team I would like to thank head coach Peter Di Venuto, women’s head coach Carl Sandri, John, Susan and the committee and James Higgs for all of their continued support and hard work throughout the season.

Emma Inglis Captain

Women's 2nd Eleven 2016/17 could best be described as a season of missed opportunities for the Women's P2 team. Whilst we did continue to improve from last year, unfortunately our batting was still below par and continually proved to be the difference between us and the other teams.

We opened the season with an easy win over Dandenong and the expectations of great things to come was planted. Unfortunately though the following week we lost to EMP by 1 run, and this became a trend throughout the season with 7 additional games being decided in the last or 2nd last over, 4 of which we lost and 1 being a draw. Obviously we improved from last year because any of those close games could have gone our way, but the fact that we couldn't quite get over the line in those games meant we ended the season with only 3 wins, but it could have potentially been 9 which would have been a fantastic improvement on last season.

Some notable performances for the year came from 3 new players to the club in Tiana Atkinson (160 runs and 4 wickets), Georgia Kerr (125 runs and 6 wickets), and Jess Dale with 14 wickets. Ella Austin had a great year topping the batting with 240 runs (including one half century), and 6 catches.

I'd also like to congratulate to the following P2/Development Squad girls selected in Junior representative teams this season: - CA National Championships: Georgia Kerr, Tiana Atkinson, and Jaide Anthony; - CV State Championships: Diya Redhu, Chloe Harrison, Ava Bennett, Alex Clancy, Sophie Barber, Emily Sharkey, and Heidi Pearce; - SSA Championships: Evie Stansby

Great progress was made this season with our Development Squad and we have a large amount of talented girls who will be joining the current group next year. The future for the Prahran Women's group is looking very bright indeed.

I'd like thank David Williams for his coaching and support this season, and a big thank you to the girls for supporting me as captain for the past 2 years.

My closing statement is identical to what I said in this report last season: There are obvious things we need to work on next season, with batting being at the top of the list. And whilst the continual close losses we had this season can lead to a team losing belief in their ability to win, we can go into next season knowing that we were close on a lot of occasions, and in fact improved from last year. So the possibilities for next season are positive.

Men’s 2nd XI The Prahran 2nd XI had a competitive 2016-17 season that unfortunately culminated in a semi-final defeat to the eventual premiers, Essendon, at Windy Hill.

I was very pleased in the players’ commitment and mate-ship throughout the season, despite having consistent personnel changes to the team. Ensuring every one of your teammates has a great cricket day because you are in the team, is the foundation of successful teams, and this contributed to our mission for the season. We all have a personal leadership responsibility to instil confidence in our teammates and celebrate their success.

The team was setup to be an educational cricket environment, where all players have input to discuss situations and development opportunities – this is one aspect to fast track cricketer’s development. I thank all my teammates for embracing this philosophy. It gave me great pleasure to observe the players helping each other to be at their best at all moments – for it takes great mental application and determination to achieve this elite capability.

It was terrific to witness player’s cricket skills, plus their personal and leadership growth, and for young cricketers like Will Sutherland, Blake Parsons and Travis Jackson all get opportunities and excel up in Premier Grade.

Prahran’s future is exciting when you consider our underage Victorian and Australian representatives: Ryan Hartley, Nick King, Will and Blake (u19s) and James Boyce (u17), have all gained valuable experience against the open age players at Premier 2nd XI level.

There were many memorable moments and milestones.  Round 7: Nick Morrey’s 101no, in our victory over Dandenong, brought up early on day 2 with tense last wicket partnership with Nick Stone.  Round 17: Rowan Bricker carrying his bat for a career best 162no (& 22no 2nd inns) orchestrating a victory over Casey Sth Melbourne and securing a finals berth.  QF: Nick King (156no) carried his bat a week later setting up a comprehensive quarter-final win over Melbourne University.  Daniel Van Der Merwe’s continued development as a fast bowler getting rewarded for his efforts with 5 wickets in a match in victories over Greenvale Kangaroos and leading the attack to a memorable outright win over Melbourne.  Jeremy Devlin further enhanced his reputation as a future Premier cricket all-rounder with contributions with the bat and twice collecting 5 wickets in a match.

Karl Heiser was outstanding as our scorer all season – every Prahran cricketer whole-heartedly appreciates the efforts and his commitment to the cause.

Vamsy Doddala was a welcome addition to the coaching development of players and took on the role as my right hand man in the 2nd XI. His willingness to volunteer his time and share his extensive knowledge of the game from a different perspective, including match video analysis, ensured players continued to develop at training and in games.

All members of the coaching staff and selection committee led by Peter Di Venuto, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Carl Sandri, David Hemp, selfless club captains Stephen Seymour, Ajay Bhatt and Darren Warne have all worked in harmony to establish a foundation for sustained results. Thank you all for the friendship, cricket discussions and for making Prahran CC a better place to be.

Thanks to the club board and committee allowing me the honour to once again captain a Prahran team.

Unfortunately, we were not able to deliver the 2nd XI premiership, with a very capable squad of eligible players, but there is no doubt we all gained enormous experience and development which all bides well for the future of Prahran Cricket Club.

Men's 3rd XI The Prahran Cricket Club Third XI season saw us make finals for the first time in five seasons although it can be classified as a season of two halves, the first saw us unable to gain any momentum and missing out on opportunities and in contrast the second half saw us decimating our oppositions, resulting in 32 points in the last five rounds.

The start of the season saw us with a good win against Essendon but with a loss in a rain affected game followed by another couple saw us at 8 points after 7 rounds, leaving us behind the eight ball. A couple of good wins in the T20 saw us gain some momentum but again we let that slip in the next two games. With the first two red ball games also being convincing losses we found ourselves truly out of the race at 16th at the Christmas break.

Personally I would say the next phase was one of the most enjoyable cricket I have ever played. With a young team it could have been easy for them to sit back and accept that the season would finish early but credit to them they came out in force after Christmas and saw it as a mission to make finals.

There were some obvious performances with the bat and ball through the course of the last five rounds however every player contributed to our success, every individual played for the team and the camaraderie amongst the players was one that I shall cherish for a long time to come. The madness and togetherness of the team showed results on the ladder as we climbed rapidly to finish fifth and qualify for the finals for the first time in five seasons. Unfortunately, the momentum was cut short half way through the first session against Northcote where we let our momentum slip. Overall it was a season of positives and some excellent performances.

As Captain, I would like to thank all the 28 players for their support and effort through the season. Special mentions to Darian Kuzma, Sam Ferguson, James Billington, Nick Blaich, Daniel Clarke, Oscar Sargeant, Mason Warne and Sam Hill for having a good year personally. To Ben Rantall, Nigel Hunt and Sam Hill for their excellent voice and banter on and off the field, to the coach Peter Di Venuto for giving me the opportunity to captain the team. Steve Seymour, Bryce McGain and Darren Warne for all the off field support, to Susan Frances and Michael Symons for organizing tea and Righetti covers, and finally to Lyndal Warne for her game-day support throughout the season.

Let’s make 2017-18, year of the true blues!

Men's 4th Eleven 2016/17 was an exciting season in many ways, not only for myself but for all the new and young players trying to make their own mark on the season.

My first year as a player and captain with Prahran, was personally very rewarding leading a young group who were very organised and prepared. I was very impressed with the 4th eleven’s desire to train hard, learn and compete at training and then to watch their competitive attitudes improve with each game throughout the year, was pleasing.

The majority of the team hadn’t played together as we had 30 players come through the team of which 15 were new to the club, this was high but an improvement from the 40 that played last season.

As the second half of the season was progressing, the players started to realise that finals may have been a possibility; the focus from the players was of real determination, as a result of playing smart competitive cricket, and this got us over the line in some close matches.

Finishing 6th on the ladder after the home and away season, nine wins of which one was outright, three drawn and seven losses.

The result against Footscray in the semi-final showed how determined the group was to win for each other. Chasing 227 for victory 9 wickets down, was a tremendous effort. Unfortunately the quarter final against Carlton wasn’t the result we were after, BUT the team’s ability to grind it out to the very end was a credit to all the players.

Our best bowlers in both the finals: Nathan Caton-Robertson, Tom Sudano, Tom Collins, and Liam Brown. Also with the bat: Clinton Bricker, Tom Sudano, Hugh Gatford, Jay Jhamb and Liam Brown.

At a playing level it was great to see Prahran’s next group begin their journey. Special mentions to Darian Kuzma, Tom Matson, Mason Warne and Dan Clarke progressing up to the 2nds. The batting skills throughout the year was fantastic to see especially from the younger players of Jay Jamb who showed his batting talents, making 101 not out v’s Kingston and his hand in the semi-final, which was a very important partnership. Hamish Withers for his 109 v’s Geelong, but was a shame he finished the season early. Huw Gatford being ever reliable at number 3 and missing out on a half century too often. Also mentions to young players of Sashin Garber and Jack Di Venuto.

Our Bowling stocks from the start of the season was by far our greatest asset, with Ben Rantall leading the way. His attitude was first class not to mention some of his spells were just too good, Nathan Caton-Robertson, his consistent season peaked when he took 5/34 and steered us home in the semi- final. 1st year player Tom Officer has the ability to push higher as he produced some unplayable spells. Also the all-round talent of Callum Elvins, who was playing above his years, Last but not least Tom Collins who produced into the wind spells that every captain dreams of and was our most consistent bowler. It was a joy to captain our bowling attack week in week out.

Personal awards - Batting: Hamish Withers, Bowling: Nathan Caton-Robinson, Fielding: Clinton Bricker.

Page 32 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 138th Annual Report and Financial Statement

It would be remiss to not thank each and every player who played in the 4th eleven, in particular Clinton Bricker for his support, who was a fantastic leader on the field.

Finally, a big thank you to Peter Di Venuto for his support throughout the season and approaching me to play in my “twilight” years. I thoroughly enjoyed this season leading a great group of good young men.

Off the field, I thought the club was very well organised and always very welcoming to myself and my family.

Even though we just missed a Grand Final appearance, the success of the 4th Eleven season was nothing short of fantastic, and all players now have experience in finals, which is a great step forward to the next season.
