    DECIDE: How to Manage the Risk in Your Decision Making Beware milestones Having convinced you to improve your measurement of what really matters in your organisation so that you can make better decisions, I must provide a word of caution. Sometimes when we introduce new measures we actually hurt decision making. Take the effect that milestones have on people. Milestones as the name infers are solid markers of progress on a journey. You have either made the milestone or you have fallen short. There is no better example of the effect of milestones on decision making than from sport. Take the game of cricket. If you don’t know cricket all you need to focus in on is one number, 100. That number represents a century of runs by a batsman in one innings and is a massive milestone. Careers are judged on the number of centuries a batsman scores. A batsman plays the game to score runs by hitting a ball sent toward him at varying speeds of up to 100.2 miles per hour (161.3 kilometres per hour) by a bowler from 22 yards (20 metres) away. The 100.2 mph delivery, officially the fastest ball ever recorded, was delivered by Shoaib Akhtar of Pakistan. Shoaib was nicknamed the Rawalpindi Express! Needless to say, scoring runs is not dead easy. A great batting average in cricket at the highest levels is 40 plus and you are among the elite when you have an average over 50. Then there is Australia’s great Don Bradman who had an average of 99.94 with his next nearest rivals being South Africa’s Graeme Pollock with 60.97 and England’s Herb Sutcliffe with 60.63.

    Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection Hamish Thorburn Dr Michael Forbes The University of Queensland 26/02/2015 1 1 Abstract An attempt was made to try and select the Australian Test Cricket Team for then-upcoming series against India in December-January 2014-2015. Data was collected pertaining to 37 Australian cricket players, relating to both recent form (the 12 months prior to commencement of the project) and career form across multiple formats of the game. The team was selected using a mixed-integer- programming (MIP) model, after processing the statistics collected to create usable parameters for the model. It was found that the team selected by the MIP model shared only 5 of the 11 players with the actual team selected by the Australian Board of Selectors to compete in the series. When altering parameters of the model, it was found that the batting diversity of the team could be doubled while only losing 0.008 of the available talent of selected players. The reduced costs were calculated to determine how close unselected players were to being selected, and what they would have to increase their batting/bowling averages to be considered for selection. Finally, we compared the ICC player ratings to our calculated batting and bowling indices, to try to determine the optimal weighting between the different statistics. It was found that batting average was most important in batting performance (but was more important in test matches than one-day matches) and that bowling average and economy were equally important in bowling performance. 2 Introduction 2.1 The Game of Cricket Cricket is a sport composing of opposing teams of 11 players each side.

    Cheshire County Cricket League 2013 SEASON NEWSLETTER NO. 6: MAY 25 Neston lead by 17 points Third wins in row for Marple and Nantwich AFTER opening the season with two defeats, Marple have recovered to such an extent that Saturday’s outstanding six wickets win at Grappenhall was their third in a row and moves them up to fourth spot in the ECB Premier League. Just for once, the Marple spinners took a mauling at Broad Lane (Andy Greasley 1-88, Joe Cash 1-71) with Grappenhall piling up an impressive 259-6, Josh McClelland 68 not out and Mike Sambell, 51. Marple were up for it and their outstanding 19 year old Tasmanian Beau Webster smote 118 including 20 fours. He was aided by Mark Bennett, with 68 in as third-wicket stand worth 158, followed by Andrew Hall, 34 not out in a response of 261-4 with six overs to spare. Neston stay top with the only unbeaten record after outplaying Hyde at Parkgate, although they were unable to beat their east Manchester visitors in a game which started officially 15 minutes late with League sanction after a major motorway delay. Neston’s batsmen took the Hyde bowlers apart led by the consistent Will Evans, 85, back from Australia Jack Smith, 70 and Luke Camden also 70 – off 53 balls. The hard-working Dan Cranmer claimed 4-86 and Tom Young 3-95. Hyde worked hard to keep their innings intact before closing on 196-9, Danny Berry 32, Dave Fitzsimmons 31, Paul Stimson 4-37, Andy Clarke 3-62.
