N E W C L O S E N E N E W C L O S E N E W S September 2020 photo © Dave Reynolds Editor: Hugh Griffiths email: [email protected] mobile: 07768 552682 JOIN US AT NEWCLOSE ON SUNDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER Whilst the Marylebone Cricket Club is widely recognised for its ownership of Lord’s Cricket Ground and cricketing traditions, a lesser known aspect of the Club’s activities is the work of the MCC Foundation in developing cricket for girls (and youngsters in general) - as described in this short video: https://youtu.be/qRIpd7Bh7q0 At 9.30am there’ll be an ECB Women’s Big Cricket Weekend event with Girls cricket back on the Isle of Wight after an absence of 8 years. This will allow the girls to showcase their development and enthusiasm. At 12.00 noon there’ll be a 40 overs-a-side match between an Isle of Wight XI and the MCC, for the Keith Newbery Memorial Trophy. The IW Cricket Board Coach, Andy Woodward, has been able to arrange the fixture which follows a MCC match against Ryde School on Saturday 12th September (which starts at 1.00pm). THE PAVILION WILL BE OPEN FOR MEMBERS AND THEIR GUESTS FROM 9.00AM SERVING EGGS AND BACON (OF COURSE!) - AND THROUGHOUT THE DAY OFFERING LIGHT REFRESHMENTS, LUNCHES AND DRINKS. Two weeks later, on Sunday 27th September (not Sunday 20th September as previously advised), we close the season with the NEWCLOSE CRICKET CLUB PRESIDENT’S DAY of cricket and social events - culminating in the Newclose End of Season party at close of play. The morning will feature a youth cricket match between Ryde CC and Ventnor CC which will aptly demonstrate the Newclose Charity’s key objective to create opportunities for youngsters to enjoy the playing of cricket. At 12.00 noon Newclose will again host the Isle of Wight Cricket Board’s Club Cup Final. Last year’s winners were St Helens and we’ll know the finalists for 2020 by 20th September at the latest. Members can expect a further communication the week before the match advising them of the two clubs that have made it to this year’s final. President DAVID TOLFREY 1 CRICKET AT NEWCLOSE Newclose v Ryde (18th August) – a 40 over match In the absence of touring teams to the Island this season, we were delighted to host Ryde Cricket Club in a friendly fixture in which Ryde scored 175 for 3, with Geoff Kite top scoring with 51 not out. In reply, and with Club Captain Murray Jones absent, acting skipper Tom Dye made a match winning century (111 not out) taking Newclose to 176 for 4 and victory by 6 wickets with 4.2 overs to spare. It’s been good to be playing local teams and good TOM DYE’s off friends in cricket. This year’s two-innings match resulted in over 1,000 runs, three centurions and a win for Oundle Ramblers by just 3 wickets in the very last over; an epic match! Newclose looks forward to seeing them both again next year – and hoping for another great match. September fixtures at Newclose: Sunday 6th Hampshire & Isle of Wight Under 12s Sunday 13th Isle of Wight XI v MCC (see page 1) Sunday 27th President’s Day (see page 1) The Spirit of Cricket was the winner 2 Limited Overs Internationals who have played at Newclose In the July edition we identified 31 Test cricketers who had played at Newclose; last month we added 18 Women Internationals (in all formats) to our ‘Honours Board’. This month we complete the list of Internationals cricketers who have played at Newclose with 6 more men who have represented their country in ODIs and/or T20 Internationals. Danny Briggs (England) Danny Briggs (left) was born a couple of miles away in Newport, and started his senior cricket playing with Ventnor. In 2011 aged just 20, became the youngest English spin bowler to take 100 first- class wickets since Derek Underwood. The following year he became the first ever Island-born cricketer to represent England (and the youngest Hampshire cricketer to do so) playing in his only ODI against Pakistan in Dubai, debuting with Jos Buttler. England, who had in their ranks Alastair Cook, Eoin Morgan and Kevin Pietersen (who scored 130), won by four wickets with Danny taking a respectable 2 for 39 in his 10 overs. He made his T20 International debut, also in 2012, against South Africa; he played seven T20 Internationals in all, taking five wickets with a best for 2 for 25 - but he was quite expensive and was unable to hold his place. Dougie Brown (England and Scotland) In 1997 Dougie Brown was named in England's one-day squad for four nations Champions Trophy at Sharjah in the UAE. He made his debut in England's narrow 7-run victory over India, captained by Sachin Tendulkar. However, it was in England's next game against the West Indies, that he gave his best performance as an England player; he took two wickets in the opening over of the game, including Brian Lara. He played for Scotland in the 2005 ICC Danny Briggs © Dave Reynolds Trophy, taking 11 wickets in the tournament and scoring 59 runs in the final to help Scotland win the competition. Saqib Mahmood (England) In December 2015 he was named in England's squad for the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup and made his debut for England last year. Earlier in 2019, he became the first bowler for Lancashire to take a five-wicket haul in successive List A matches, when he did so in the 2019 Royal London One-Day Cup. Alas, a return visit on 9th August 2020 for Lancashire didn’t materialise. Ben McDermott (Australia) Ben, the son of the Australian Test fast bowler Craig McDermott, represented Australia in Youth One Day Internationals at Under-19 level and played alongside his older brother Alister for the Prime Minister’s XI against the 2013-2014 England touring side which was captained by Alastair Cook. A hard-hitting batsman, playing for the Hobart Hurricanes against the Melbourne Renegades on 12th January 2017 in the Big Bash League at the Etihad stadium in Melbourne, he made 114 off 52 balls, including 9 sixes and 8 fours. Reece Topley (England) Son of Don Topley, who had a 10-year playing career with Essex, Reece made his Twenty20 International debut as a left-arm fast bowler against Australia on 31st August 2015 and his ODI debut on 13th September 2015. He kept his place in the ODI side for the series against Pakistan in the UAE and played in all four matches but a stress fracture to his back has limited his progress. Adam Zampa (Australia) Adam Zampa is a leg break bowler who won his first ODI and T20 caps in 2016. Adam then became a regular member of both the ODI and T20 squad for Australia. He was named in their squad for the 2016 World Twenty20 in South Africa before he had even made his T20 International debut for Australia. He was Australia's second leading wicket-taker in the World Cup (behind James Faulkner) with five wickets at an average of 13.80 and an economy rate of 6.27. He first addressed members in September 2000, during his benefit year. ADRIAN NIGEL AYMES was born in Southampton on 4 June 1964, and attended Bellemoor School. He came late to first-class cricket. He joined the Hampshire staff when 21 years of age in 1986 but did not gain a regular place until he finally displaced Bob Parks some four years later. He gave notice of what was to follow on his first-class debut against Surrey at The Oval in 1987. With Hampshire in trouble, he battled to 58 not out. Subsequently, no player in the first-class game during the 1990s sold his wicket more dearly. He was undefeated in a high proportion of his innings, which spoke volumes for his technique, temperament and sheer cussedness. With Robin Smith, he became the beating heart and consciousness of the Hampshire batting. If he took root and dug in, Hampshire were generally assured of a competitive total. All of his eight centuries were made in adversity. Of all Hampshire’s wicket-keepers, only his successor, Nic Pothas, has a higher batting average. He was a passionately proud professional, and never gave less than his best. He was fortunate to keep wicket to two of the genuinely great bowlers in the history of the game. At the start of his career, he stood back to the incomparable Malcolm Marshall; latterly, he kept to the unique Shane Warne.

Playing with a near full-strength lineup and with a pink ball in the day-night match in preparation for the first test on Dec. 15 in Brisbane - also a day-night encounter - Pakistan lost six wickets in the final session under lights. Cricket Australia XI bowler Cameron Valente claimed four wickets, including three of Pakistan’s top six. After winning the toss and electing to bat, the visitors fell to 50-3 midway through the opening session, and wickets went down steadily from there. Only veteran Younis Khan offered sustained resistance, facing 138 balls before he inside-edged a ball from Ryan Lees that swung back slightly under lights to be caught behind for 54. He was the only Pakistan batsman to reach 50. Earlier yesterday, Pakistan officials said uncapped 17-year-old left-arm spinner Mohammad Asghar would join the team as a backup for injured legspinner Yasir Shah. Shah is doubtful for the first test following a back injury which also ruled him out of the Cairns match. Asghar has taken 68 wickets in 17 first-class matches since making his debut in 2014. Shah had been pivotal to Pakistan’s suc- cess in test matches for the last two years, taking 116 wickets in only 20 tests.
