ANNUAL REPORT

SEASON 2017/18

Page 7

Page 7 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 139th Annual Report and Financial Statement

PRESIDENT'S REPORT Dear Members, Players, Life Members and Supporters,

In sport, business and life, momentum is an amazing thing! Once you have momentum it can become an irresistible force. In a sporing sense you only need to look at Western Bulldogs and Richmond in the AFL and Philadelphia in the NBL.

At the end of last season, all momentum at PCC ground to a halt as we changed Men’s Head Coach, commenced the new season with a Committee of only 5 members and a caretaker President. Since that there has been an amazing amount of work undertaken behind the scenes to get the wheels turning again and 12 months later, there is a true sense that the momentum is returning and gathering significant pace. This message is about acknowledging and thanking those that have played such a significant part in the re-emergence of the Prahran Cricket Club. Without you all, it is scary to think where we may have been.

I want to start with thanking all of the players, men and women for their support of the Prahran Cricket Club during this season just past. We managed to maintain all of our key players and at different times of the year, there were some outstanding results that gives you the sense that if we can get all the cogs in the wheel turning in the same direction and syncing with each other, then something special is not too far away.

Towards the end of the season we could see some great signs amongst ‘generation next’ in the men’s side of the club. Shaun Miller continues to show that he can be something special at this level and go beyond. After a great apprenticeship in the 2’s, Nick King showed that he has the class and ability to be a great player, Sam Grimwade continues to grow, Blake Parsons showed us his all-round talent, the Dog showed he still has plenty of tricks and Stephen Seymour showed why he has played 200 games of Premier 1st X1 games. Thanks to new skipper Nathan McNally for taking charge of the team. It is never an easy thing to step up into such a role and leading guys that have been, up until then, your team mates. I am sure there was lots of learning during this period that will help make Nathan even stronger in the future.

There were similar great signs in the women’s teams. With half of our 1st X1 side out of the team on representative duties for a fair chunk of the season, we saw the senior players such a Kath Hempenstall and Bron Dawes, plus Erica Kershaw, helping guide a group of new players into the club. There are so many promising signs and when you see a 13-year-old debut in the 1st X1, you know you have momentum and when you see Jaide Anthony win the Premier Cricket Junior Player of the Year, you know that you are doing a lot right. Congratulations to Emma Inglis, Alana King, and Gemma Triscari on their selection in the Premier Cricket Team of the Year, we are all incredibly proud of you. Thank you to Dave Williams for his work on the Girls development Squad which involved a whole heap of winter sessions plus Wednesdays with the Senior Group and Friday nights with game time. This is a wonderful initiative and is helping to quickly develop the girls and ready them for 1st X1 cricket and beyond. A special thanks to all the parents of the girls who helped so much throughout the season. As an example, covers can be a challenge at the best of time and we were so grateful of the many times that the parents pitched in and helped. This is what a club is all about and you all showed outstanding leadership.

To our Coaches, men’s and women’s, a huge thank you. Barry Neivandt returned to the club and had to meet and learn about a whole new playing group and coaching panel. Thank you also to his team of assistants Bryce McGain, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Ben Puzny, Ajay Bhatt, Darren Warne and Vamsy Doddala. The time, effort and expertise you gave us is greatly appreciated by all.

Carl Sandri again took charge of the Women’s team along with Dave Williams and Tomos Fowler. I personally enjoyed the time I spent with the Women’s teams and believe from the bottom of my heart that within the next two years, we will be the dominant force in Women’s cricket in this state. I only have to look at the improvement from what I saw in game 1 to what I witnessed in the finals to know that Carlos has the ship firmly pointed in the right direction.

Page 8

Page 8 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 139th Annual Report and Financial Statement

Without doubt, the biggest and most time-consuming job in the club is that of Administration Manager. Lisa Grimwade put her hand up for the gig and having done the role for a period in the past, I can tell you, it is relentless. We have 7 sides, so at some stage or another Lisa touches base with around 100 players in a season plus their parents. Add the committee, supporters, Cricket Victoria the Australian Cricketers Association, the City of Stonnington, other Toorak Park tenants, other cricket clubs in the City of Stonnington and anyone else who wants to contact the club and you can see how big a role it is. Add to that being a member of the Committee, Maddie’s Shield organising Committee, 13CABS Charity Day, the Bryce McGain Academy Day, the Movember Foundation Victoria Police charity game plus organising Thursday night dinners, the Presentation Night and you get a sense of the contribution Lisa has made. Swan like on the surface, I am sure there was a lot going on under the surface. Thank you so much Lisa and thank you to the Grimwade family for sharing so much of Lisa with us over the past year.

Heidi Sutherland took on the role of sponsorship. Probably the most difficult role in the club to get moving with very little momentum, Heidi has delivered outstanding results. We already had great Sponsors like R.T. Edgar (Anthony Grimwade), JR Duty Free Evelyn Danos), the East Malvern Community Bank Branch (Peter Norman) but under Heidi’s stewardship we have added CGU Insurance, The Fox Family Foundation, The College Lawn (thanks Anthony Grimwade), 13CABs (and thanks Bryce for the introduction), we welcomed back Teska Carson and added Signatory Dentistry amongst others. It is looking likely that we will have in excess of $100,000 in sponsorship this season and a new benchmark for our club. Heidi was a member of Maddie’s Shield #2 organising committee and arranged some amazing donations for Maddie’s Shield #2 that allowed us to make some great extra funds. In recent times, Heidi has pulled together an amazing group of volunteers to help with the preparation of Maddie’s Shield #3 and has been relentlessly driving our work around the Strategy piece for the club. Thanks so much for all this and the so much more that you helped with this season.

So much momentum already gained from a dead stop!

Thank you to Nigel Hutton. We have new scoreboard software, the Players Handbook has been updated, millions of photos taken, Facebook Posts, Twitter Posts and Instagram posts. Nigel is the quiet behind the scenes person that you can always rely on to do those things that make such an enormous difference to our club. Never underestimate just how much invaluable work Nigel and his family for that fact, does for the club.

John Raglus is another of those people that never, make a fuss or want a fuss made of them, John’s philosophy is, let me know what you want me to do and I will do it. I t is brilliant to have a person like John on the committee and whilst some personal commitments meant that he could not be at the club as much as he has in the past or wanted to, when he was at the club he gave 150%. Thanks for all you did John and for another season as the Club’s Premier Cricket delegate.

John Zarb returned to the club on the committee. It was awesome to have John back around the place. John reconnected with Teska Carson, added Wine 1160, Moti Mahal, Huxtaburger and Crust just to name a few. Thursday Night awards were hosted by Nick and Will, but all the awards were the work of Zarby behind the scenes. Finally, his work at Righetti is legendary. The players and the Committee are incredibly grateful for all you did for us this year John.

Nigel Parsons was a great addition to the committee during this year. His work around the Male Junior Development Squad has been exceptional and another sign that we are getting some brilliant momentum back into the club. Nigel has taken over the reigns of the Prahran Cricket Club already and is the club’s 9th President. His background and experience in business and cricket administration are outstanding and we are in the process of building an outstanding team of people to support him on the committee and drive the club forward. Thanks for taking on all the challenges you have Nigel and we are all here to help you with driving the club forward.

At the end of the season we welcomed David Arnold to the committee. David is a past player and professionally, holds a senior management role with the Bendigo Bank and Adelaide Bank. A very warm welcome David. Your cricket and business background are ideal, and we are confident you will add something wonderful to the club.

Page 9

Thanks to Bruce Beaton for everything you did for the club this season and you are a very worthy winner of the non-Playing Best Clubman as is Will Pike who won the playing Best Clubman Award.

Some extra special thank-you’ s to:

• Al Gumley, another selfless all giving season from Al. He was the Men’s Chairman of Selectors, again hosted our members visiting form overseas and went over and above on every level. We are so blessed to have your support Al. • Rick Sykes is our Treasurer from afar. Living in Geelong and working in Lara, he does all of the accounting work for us, prepares Financial Statements and coordinates the year end reporting and audits. This work is incredibly time consuming and we thank Rick for the countless hours he gives to the club. A great friend of our club and a role he has been doing for the past 9 years. • James Higgs who scored for the Men’s and Women’s 1st X1 sides when his Victorian and Australian scoring commitments allowed. • Karl Hieser our 2nd X1 scorer. Thanks to 13CABs who are now sponsoring Karl. More amazing milestones for Karl again in the past season. • Chris Seymour, Rosemary Schlittler and Hannah Roberts for the wonderful afternoon teas throughout the season and our sponsors Fruit Nest and Baked on Glenferrie for the wonderful part you played.

Thank you to Chris Seymour and Rosemary Schlittler (with John Malligan)

• Ian Crawford, 10 years out of the committee and still keeps on giving to the club. Ian is also Chairman of ISEC and the Sub District Disciplinary Committee. • Michael Symons has been our match day manager for the past 2 seasons. Thanks, Michael for all you have done for us and so much over and above. Another of our quiet helpers who just gets things done without a fuss. • (Sir) Peter Norman. Chairman of Maddie’s Shield #2 and a wonderful friend of our club. We were the beneficiaries of $30,000 in grants from the East Malvern Community Bank Branch this season. Thank you to all the Directors for their ongoing support of PCC. • Tony Oulton, Grant Smethurst, Lauren Dick, Mitch Hewitt, Peter Knight and all of the team and Councillors at the City of Stonnington. We get amazing support from all parts of the Council and we are so excited by what the future might look like, thanks to these very special people who share our vision for the club. • Mike Ronchi and Peter Binns and Anthony Ilot from Cricket Victoria plus all the team there and the Directors. We get amazing financial and other support form Cricket Victoria and they have also embraced our vision and have provided a grant of $80,000 to be used towards the new cricket nets at Toorak Park.

Page 10

Page 10 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 139th Annual Report and Financial Statement

• Grant Poulter and the team at . Grant has been helping us with the Toorak Park Pavilion redevelopment and his work alongside Anthony Ilot from Cricket Victoria see us awarded a $1,000,000 grant to help with the Business Plan for the redevelopment. This will allow us a significantly greater opportunity of taking the redevelopment to another level and to a standard no other club in the competition will be able to boast. • To all our sponsors. Without you, we would not be able to operate at the level we do. Please visit the website, see who is listed and please make sure that you support them in the same way they support us. • To my wife Michele and sons Chris, Tim and Shaun plus their beautiful partners Lauren, Amy and Lucy and my beautiful granddaughter Evie, thank you for allowing me the time to do what I have over the past season. Your grace in allowing me the space to do what was needed is truly, greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to three very special people who were recognised for their outstanding service to the club with Life membership. This year we welcomed:

• Kyle Malligan. o In a wonderful career at the Prahran Cricket Club that stopped just short of 200 1st X1 games, Kyle was also our Club and held the dismissals record at our club for many years, only recently losing that honour to Sam Coates. This is a long overdue honour bestowed on a very worthy recipient. • Al Gumley. o Al has given a life time to the club and all the players that have passed through. He has opened his home to our international visitors and does all the little things that others just do not think of. It was great to finally welcome Al to this prestigious group of people but a fitting tribute for a wonderful servant of our club. • Paul Sealey o Paul was an outstanding member of the 1st X1, playing over 100 1st X1 games. However, it was his off-field leadership that will be his greatest legacy. A member of the committee, his vision was about making Prahran Cricket Club a great place to be and for bringing a group of players together. Thanks for all you have delivered and will deliver to the club Paul.

Outstanding service to Prahran Cricket Club, Life Members, Kyle Malligan, Alastair Gumley & Paul Sealey

Despite only having a small committee, we gave back to the community in spades this year. We are a very important part of the community that is the City of Stonnington and we receive amazing support from the Council. So, it is important that we play a leading role in not only making cricket great in the municipality but doing whatever we can to help those that may not have the same opportunities as we do.

Page 11

Page 11 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 139th Annual Report and Financial Statement

The following is a small sample of how we have back to the community on season 2017/18:-

• Victoria Police Movember Cup game in Movember where the Frankston Police and Frankston Police played a social T20 game to try and raise funds for this extremely worthwhile cause. • Maddie’s Shield #2 was held at Toorak Park on Australia Day. As an event, in my humble opinion, the best we have conducted at the club. We are proud that we raised roughly $40,000 and so much additional funds going to Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision whilst promoting Women in Cricket through a game between PCC and Box Hill Cricket Club. The celebrity game beforehand featured some amazing names form AFL and Australian Cricket. • 13 CABS Charity Game. Held in March, it was a game between Taxi Drivers and a Celebrity Team that included current and past legends of Prahran Cricket Club such as Alana King, Bryce McGain and Julien Wiener. The game is held to honour those Taxi Drivers that have sadly lost their lives at work and as a celebration of their lives, raise money for the Monash Children’s Hospital. Over $20,000 was raised on the night.

The future is looking very bright. Work is scheduled to commence on the new cricket nets in 2018. The hope is that we will be using the synthetic nets by Christmas and the turf nets some time early 2019. Lots of bridges to cross, but everyone is working hard to make it happen. The next big chunk of work will start in 2022. We are trying to turn what the Council have proposed in terms of a $10.5 million Pavilion into something closer to $30,000,000. Similarly, there is a lot of work to go to raise these extra funds but the indications to date are very promising and the grant received from the State Government of $1,000,000 means that we can accelerate the process and deliver much better planning outcomes than we could ever have otherwise dreamed of.

So, I hope that you can sense from this that the Prahran Cricket Club is, and will continue to be, a bloody exciting place to be around in coming seasons. Lots to be up and about for, lots of improvements to Toorak Park and Victory Square and in the lifetime of most players, the establishment of new, benchmark facilities for Premier Cricket.

Strap yourself in, it is going to be one hell of a ride.

To anyone who I may have inadvertently missed thanking, please forgive me and know that what you have done has made a significant difference.

See you all soon for season 2018/19.

OBITUARIES

Neil Smyth (Cap # 268)

Neil Smyth was one of our club greats and a member of the True Blues Hall of Fame. He had a long career at Prahran spanning 10 seasons between 1951/52 and 1960/61 including the 1954/55 Premiership team. A left-hand batsman and keeper Neil accumulated 1162 runs as a lower order batsman but it will be for his keeping that Neil will be remembered for. For some considerable time, Neil held the club record for most keeping dismissals, finishing his career on 229, comprising 188 catches and 41 stumpings.

David Murray

David played with our seconds, thirds and fourths from 1966 - 1972 and served on the Committee from 1968-72. David later umpired in the VSDCA and was duly honoured by receiving Life Membership of the VSDCA Umpires Association.

Kevyn Harwood

Kevyn was Senior Coach during the 70’s, coaching former greats, Dav Whatmore and Julien Wiener. Kevyn had a unique ability to demonstrate and coach his players on technique and approach to the game of cricket that made many of them fine players.

Peter Lidstrom

Peter served our Club as a member of the Executive Committee from 2011/12 to 2014/15. Peter provided legal advice as Honorary Solicitor, was our delegate to the Cricket Victoria Inner South East Zone (‘Scorpions’) together with other varied activities when called upon.

PREMIER CRICKET AWARDS

At this year’s Premier Cricket Awards, Prahran’s own, Jaide Anthony, won the June Cole Award for player judged best first year Women’s Premier Firsts player. Jaide had a stunning 1st XI debut year at the club with her efforts clearly recognised by her peers.

Jaide continually strove for excellence and improvement in her game. She played in all three women’s grades during the season including the captaincy of the Girl’s 3rd XI team that played on Friday nights in a boys U15 ISEC competition.

What makes the award most amazing is Jaide won it at the age of 14 years. Watch this space!

SPECIAL MENTION

Congratulations to Steve Seymour for reaching the 200 Premier Cricket game milestone.

Steve became the 7th player in the club's 139-year history to achieve the milestone behind a bevy of club Legends and Hall of Famers: Neil Schlittler (233), Bruce Murray (229), Dav Whatmore (221), Andrew Grant (209), RS Stephens (204) and Bryce McGain (204).

He is also in elite company in the ranks of the all-rounders who have achieved the treble of 200 games, 3000 runs and 200 wickets. Only Bruce Murray (428 wkts and 5126 runs) and Sam Loxton (323 wkts and 5246 runs) have done better.

Since his debut at the club in 2003/04 Steve has played 14 seasons in the Firsts and accumulated a host of achievements along the way. He is widely respected by all who have played with him and has always led from the front.

Congratulations Steve, an outstanding career so far and one that all players, friends and supporters of the club hope will continue into the future.

COACH'S REPORT

Women's Coach

Season 2017/18 was a season that saw many a Prahran player in representative colours throughout the year, from the heights of the WBBL to the WNCL, as well as the junior national pathways competitions and youth Australian exhibition games and tours. Each of them were great ambassadors of the Prahran Cricket Club on the professional circuit. There were also numerous girls that represented their pathway teams in the state championships across all age groups. This was a fantastic achievement and potentially a starting point to future state and national representation through hard work and commitment. This bodes well, not only for the women’s cricket program at PCC, but also for new players that will join the club, knowing full well that we look forward to developing cricketers far beyond the premier cricket level.

Due to having so many representative players this also meant that we had a stuttering season, results-wise, on field. The positive to this obviously was being able to provide players opportunities to play in higher grades than maybe they originally thought they would and thus giving them the exposure to cricket at the elite level. This exposure opened the girl’s eyes to what it really takes to compete at such a high level, skills wise, mentally and physically. It did turn out to be a long season for the girls as we do take a very young group in and this began to take its toll late as we essentially ran out of gas when it got to finals time and without any other big performances down the stretch this saw us bundled out at the semi-final stage for the second season in a row.

Another exciting addition to the Prahran Cricket Club’s Women’s program was the Development Squad which was overseen by David Williams. The Development Squad was essentially a team that gave our strong, and ever- growing development program, a competition presence and the opportunity for girls within the Development Squad to not only train, but also to play and learn on the job. This team successfully participated in each of its fixtures throughout the season and helped the club provide another entry point to players at that age level looking to take their cricket more seriously. This will also grow our senior Second XI in time and provide the senior section of the club a lot more depth moving forward which is definitely an area of improvement that we’ve identified for the program.

Our strong progression as a Women’s club saw three players make the Women’s Premier Team of the Year; Emma Inglis, Gemma Triscari & Annabel Sutherland. Our commitment to development was also recognised with Jaide Anthony taking out the Victorian Premier Competition’s award for Best Young Player. First year player Teagan Brett was also fortunate enough to win the best player in the State Pathways competition again proof that the future is in good hands at PCC.

The club was again the beneficiary of strong leadership from Captain Emma Inglis. Emma has been at the forefront of the team delivering on its potential and believes there is more team and individual success to come with the talent we have at the club. She again demonstrated her ability to focus on the task at hand by ensuring everything ran smoothly on game days even if her preparation at times may have been hectic due to her Vic Spirit and commitments. With her State & WBBL duties affecting us at times, Kathleen Hempenstall stood up to fulfil captaincy duties in Emma’s absence and she did so very well, pushing high standards at training and games and keeping the continuity of team plans in all contests. Both captains did an outstanding job throughout the season ensuring the playing group were always developing individually, moving forward collectively and learning to play their role within the team.

It was a privilege to be able to coach and work with this group of girls across what is a long season (when you consider some players began working on their games as early as June/July). I hope all of the players that I have had the opportunity to mentor, have not only enjoyed their time in the program, but have developed as cricketers and more importantly as people.

The talent and potential on display throughout the season was exciting to say the least. Together, we look forward to setting our sights on further success as a club, and as individuals. We will continue to raise our expectations in our quest to be the most successful women’s Premier Cricket club in the country - with positive on field results and the continuing development of players - but also as the ‘club of choice’ for talented players around Victoria. There’s no question all of the girls are excited at the challenges that await them and are prepared to do whatever it takes across the winter months and through pre-season to better themselves individually, and for the good of the team, as we hunt more success in season 2018/19.

I’d like to thank the entire club for the support of the Women’s program across the WP1 & WP2 teams. We all understand the benefits that are afforded to the club and its people with full integration of women’s and men’s

Page 20

Page 20 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 139th Annual Report and Financial Statement programs and we are no doubt looking to stay leaders of the pack in that regard.

To President, Phil Williamson, and his general committee, for his persistent drive, support and efforts to making this program a success - thank you. Lisa Grimwade, for being on top of all of the administrative duties that are required to keep the club going. And to our much loved and appreciated scorer James Higgs who did so much for us throughout the season, another big thank you. James, you are an awesome club person and part of what makes PCC so special!

Also, a big thank you to support coaches, David Williams and Tomos Fowler, as well as all the parents & volunteers that have helped or assisted in many ways across the season.

We look forward to scaling new heights in season 2018/19!

CAPTAINS' REPORTS

Men's 1st Eleven

The 2017/18 season was full of highlights & lowlights. Prahran Cricket Club began the season with a new/former coach, Barry Neivandt, coming on board late in the piece & doing an incredible job to seamlessly fit back into the club to work with the playing group.

Barry did an incredible job with putting together a preseason plan to get PCC off to a flyer. Having great coaches in David Hussey, Dimi Mascarenhas, Bryce McGain & Ben Puzny helping out in the lead up to round 1 set us up for success.

Losing Evan Gulbis (back to Carlton) & not recruiting in the off season allowed us to give opportunities to our excellent group of youth players coming through the club.

Round 1 started promisingly knocking off Footscray (semi-finalist) with some outstanding performances however we were brought back down to earth by reigning premiers, Fitzroy-Doncaster, the following week which started an inconsistent season.

After the opening six 1-day matches, PCC were 4-2 having great wins vs Monash, Camberwell & Essendon.

T20 had long been a strength of PCC however a wash-out vs St Kilda round 1 followed by 3 losses including losing the unlosable to eventual champions, Dandenong, put us back in the pack with a lot of work to do.

Moving on to the 2-day format, we knew we needed to win the early games after Xmas to have a chance at finals & unfortunately, poor losses to Melbourne Uni & Kingston-Hawthorn all but ended our finals chances.

Like the 2016/17 season, it was frustrating to have such a talented group stand up in so many matches however not to the consistency of the best sides in the competition which is certainly a focus for the club moving forward.

Although we failed to have the team success we strived for at the start of the season, a number of individuals performed very well during the season. Shaun Miller & Adam Bull had 500+ run season highlighted by a round 1 unbeaten 123 by Shaun & 150* vs Greenvale for Adam. Both players were fantastic in many games throughout the season however I believe they have the ability to have 700+ run seasons in 2018/19 which PCC will be hoping for.

Jacob Serry, James Billington, Nick King, Rowan Bricker & Will Sutherland all made valuable contributions with the bat throughout the season however consistency let them down. All are very young (under 24) & I am excited about the coming years & the damage they will do.

Steve Seymour, Sam Grimwade & myself all took over 20 wickets for the season & played roles which helped the bowling unit enormously. Will Sutherland provided a lot of energy & aggression to the bowling group when he wasn’t with various rep sides including making his debut for the Bushrangers in the JLT Cup. Well done Sutho.

Injuries curtailed several other bowlers during the season however the future is very bright with the best years ahead for Matt Wilcox, Adam Hutton & Liam Brown.

PCC are very fortunate to have the support of an amazing group of coaches, volunteers & families including:

- Barry Neivandt & his coaching group - James Higgs & Karl Hieser for the being the best scorers in the competition - Chris Seymour & Rosemary Seymour for providing the best lunches & teas in the competition & taking on our ‘feedback’ on how to stay #1 - Our committee headed by Phil Williamson for their incredible support to the playing group - Our families, friends & supporters. We never take for granted your support where ever we are playing & thank you for your dedication

I would also like to acknowledge the amazing feat of Steven Seymour in achieving 200 1st X1 games for PCC during round 14 this season. Steve “Skins” has led PCC as a captain, run scorer, wicket taker & all round good bloke for 14 years (2 seasons overseas in the UK). Skins has been very loyal to PCC & a good friend to myself & many others not only at the club but supporters, committee members as well as anyone else that has stepped foot into PCC. Highlights for PCC include making over 3000 runs (six centuries) & taking more than 200 wickets

Page 22

Page 22 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 139th Annual Report and Financial Statement

(five 5-for’s) as well as being a four-time winner as champion first X1 player & twice winner of the David Jukes medal as Club Champion. Having Skins play on in 2018/19 will be hugely valuable & his mentoring to the playing group will no doubt upskill many players to get the best out of themselves.

Personally, I would like to thank Barry & the club for instilling faith in me as captain for the season. It was a huge learning curve especially having my wife, Hannah, & my first child before round 2 however I look forward to getting the most out of the group/club in the coming season as skipper.

Women's 1st Eleven

It was a tale of two halves this season for the Premier First women. Up until the first break for the T20 competition, we had won four out of five games played and were sitting second on the one-day ladder. There were some great team wins with the stand out performers including Jess Duffin and Kath Hempenstall. Kath started the season with an impressive 79 against Plenty Valley and followed up with a match winning 55* against MCC in round 4. Jess was on fire in round 2 with a blistering 171 against Dandenong.

Jess Duffin in action

These performances in the early season had the team locked in for the one-day finals, however the performances took a turn for the worst in the back end of the season. We could not manage to notch up a win in the back half of the season and ended in a semi-final loss to EMP.

With a majority of the first team’s regular players playing in the WBBL, the T20 competition came with disappointing results for the club, only winning one game. However, it did give an opportunity to our rising stars to step up and show their worth. Some great performances by Teagan Brett, Tiana Atkinson and Jaide Anthony showed that the club is in a good position for the future.

Congratulations to Alana King, Gemma Triscari, Jess Duffin and Annabel Sutherland for their performances in the WBBL and WNCL. Also, to our young guns Jaide Anthony, Tiana Atkinson, Teagan Brett for their selection in state junior teams.

And a big congratulation to Jaide Anthony for her standout year with the ball earning her the Julie Calvert Club Champion award as well as Victorian Premier Cricket’s Best First Year Women’s Player. A great achievement at such a young age. Emma Inglis, Gemma Triscari and Annabel Sutherland were all named in the Victorian Premier Cricket Team of the Year.

On behalf of the Women’s First XI, I’d like to thank Carl Sandri for his ongoing hard work and passion to continue to develop and improve the skills of the Women’s Firsts. I’d also like to thank James Higgs for his scoring efforts this year, Lisa for her fantastic effort rounding us up and making sure all the behind the scenes work was done, and finally to the committee for their ongoing support and commitment for growing the whole Prahran Cricket Club.

I am sure with a big preseason and hard work the Women’s Firsts will be back with a vengeance next year and looking to bring home some silverware.

Go True Blues!

Men's 2nd Eleven

The 2017-18 season began with a high expectation for success. The 2nd XI had performed very well the previous season, beaten in a semi-final to the eventual premiers and with a year’s development in our playing squad, we were set to improve further as a team, and promote players to the 1st team in top form.

We started the season with three straight One-Day wins against very capable and respected opposition – Footscray (James Billington 83*), Fitzroy Doncaster (Rohan Bricker 91, Nick Morrey 71*) and a ten wicket triumph over Monash Tigers (Rhen Smith 4/44, Adam Bull 82* and R. Bricker 45*) A narrow loss to Camberwell Magpies in round 4, falling just 8 runs short of their 282 at Toorak Park - which proudly continues to be a well above average scoring ground – was another encouraging sign.

The great start to the season encountered a setback with a tricky loss in a low scoring match to Ringwood on their Number 2 oval, (Adam Hutton 5/26 & Will Pike 4/23) but a confident win over last year’s Premiers Essendon had the Prahran 2nd XI at 4 W and 2 L at the end of the One-Day phase – a solid start and all players contributing to a terrific team atmosphere.

We approached the Four Twenty20 matches with confidence knowing that victories could secure our season in the top teams of the competition. Ultimately our lack of preparation for this format was our undoing not only for the 2nd team, but throughout the whole club. We were comprehensively beaten in our first three games and a wash-out in our final match in this format over two weekends. Our season slipped to 4W, 5L and 1Draw

It was a determined response from the team, after missing opportunities in the T20 phase, and we comprehensively accounted for a strong Carlton team in another one-day game, following a washed out weekend. In our only two-day fixture in 12 rounds before the Christmas break, we secured a fighting win over Greenvale, thanks to a vintage batting performance by Steve Seymour (162) who ensured we chased down the Kangaroos 191 after being 6/30.

With 6 wins, 5 loses and a draw we were in a mid-table position at the season break, with the understanding there were only a further five, two-day matches (3 home & 2 away) to make our claim for a finals position.

Although pleasing wins away from home over Casey-South Melbourne (King 131, Hutton 5/45) and Kingston Hawthorn (Dhull 100*, Hutton 6 wkts), unfortunately we were unable to make the most of the great batting conditions at Toorak Park and lost our last three home games to Melbourne Uni, Melbourne and Northcote.

It was a missed development opportunity by the 2nd Xi in 2017-18 in that we were unable to take the step into the finals series. However, there were many positives, not in the least 26 players were able to experience 2nd XI cricket, 14 of those represented our senior team well prepared, confident and in outstanding form.

Huge thanks to Karl Hieser who continues to selflessly contribute to Prahran CC and the development of our players by managing the scorebook and supporting the 2nd XI unconditionally. Despite not always getting the desired results, we will always strive to reward Karl’s advice every week as he takes up his post, “Make me proud.” We’re so very proud of you Karl – can’t thank you enough.

Full recognition to our 2017-18 coaching team; led by Head Coach Barry Neivandt, assistant coach Ben Puzny, bowling mentor Dimitri Mascarenhas, and batting assistant Steve De Bolfo; and the other team captains Nathan McNally, Ajay Bhatt and Darren Warne, for your countless hours and dedication to the development of Prahran cricketers – your advice and lessons will live with our players for a lifetime.

Chairman of Selectors Alastair Gumley has provided guidance, governance and direction. Alastair often managed the practice net captaincy responsibilities ensuring training flowed efficiently and is a role model mentor for everyone throughout the club.

To Club President Phil Williamson, Lisa Grimwade our Administration Manager, and our extremely capable committee - we are privileged to have such experienced and accomplished people leading & contributing selflessly to our club.

I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment with all our playing squad this 2017-18 season. It is extremely satisfying to contribute to the advancement and success of players transitioning into the 2nd XI team environment and then beyond to our 1st XI.

In the pursuit of success there is never a failure – just outcomes to learn from. Much has been learned in the definable moments of cricket this season, which will undoubtedly hold all players in tremendous stead in the future.

Women's 2nd Eleven

The opening game of the season saw us unfortunately playing with only 9 players, which resulted in a defeat against Plenty Valley. However, we bounced back, and gained our first win of the season against Dandenong. Unfortunately, our next few games saw us be defeated by Melbourne and EMP. Later on in the season we had a fantastic win over Box Hill chasing 214 runs with a great all round team performance, with Diya Redhu taking 3 wickets. However, the stand out performance of that game was by Ava Bennett who scored 70 runs.

After a challenging season with girls coming in and out of the side frequently, we didn’t have the opportunity to consistently perform as a team. We either delivered with bat or ball and only in three of the games over the season we managed to perform consistently with both which resulted in our three wins in the 45 over competition. On average we were the youngest side in the competition with only myself, Ella Austin, Maddie Tobias and Sam Deeble being over the age of 18. This shows the club is in a great position going forward with the amount of quality young players in the squad. There should be great things to come from an excellent group of girls.

Some notable performances from this season came from Ella Austin who had another strong season, topping the batting with 204 runs. Grace Jones and Diya Redhu both had a stand out season, being consistent and reliable with the ball. The season saw Grace Jones take 18 wickets, and Diya Redhu take 15 wickets.

There is still a lot to improve on as a team, but I am sure with the high quality of coaching and support available at Prahran Cricket club the next few seasons should be very exciting for them as a young team.

I would also like to congratulate the following P2/ Development squad girls selected in Junior representative teams this season: - CV State Championships: Diya Redhu, Alex Clancy, Ava Bennett, Emily Sharkey, Zoe Quinsey- Munro, Chloe Harrison, Maddie White, Ellen Williams, Grace Jones and Paris Bowdler.

I’d like to thank Tomos Fowler for his coaching and support towards all of the girl’s this season, and a thank you to Carl Sandri and David Williams for their coaching. Finally, I’d like to say a huge thank you to the girl’s and the club for welcoming me into the team for this season and supporting me as captain and providing me the opportunity to play for a great club during my time in Melbourne.

Men's 3rd XI

2017-18 could best be described as a season of missed opportunities for the Third XI. The results did not go our way but, for the most part of the games, we were dominant without being able to take advantage and close the game out.

We fielded 27 players this season with 11 players under the age of 18, and most of them playing consistently at that level for the first time. Whilst we lacked in experience, we certainly did not lack in talent and I am sure the experience gained from this year would be invaluable for their development and future.

The white ball games were competitive without the results. We were ahead in 4 out of the first 6 games and with good chances to win, however playing good cricket for 70% of the game does not always win you a game. That was evident as we lacked the ability to seize the ‘crunch’ moments and close out those opportunities. Whilst there were some great individual performances and highlights we could not consistently perform as a team.

There was a feeling in the group that RED Ball cricket would bring the best in us and just as we expected we started the campaign with a great win against Greenvale and things were looking bright again. However, that momentum was short lived, as we switched back to white ball the following week after a rain affected round and ensued another loss against Casey. Having not been able to string consecutive victories, we never seemed to gather any momentum and found ourselves out of finals contention by round 14.

Even though the results did not go our way, credit goes to the guys for being positive throughout, putting the team first and working hard to be the best player they can be. Special mentions to:

- Aditya Ganesh for a great first year of Premier Cricket with the bat; - Nick Stone and Nigel Hunt for a fantastic year with the ball; - Young Kevin Seth and Callum Elvins for breakthrough years, with both being given higher grade opportunities; - Clinton Bricker, for being institutional in keeping the team morale high week in week out and for being a great support for me.

Finally, a big thank you to the club and committee for once again allowing me to captain the team. And to Barry Neivandt, Alastair Gumley, Bryce McGain, Nathan McNally, Darren Warne, Lisa Grimwade and John Zarb for their support throughout the year.

Men's 4th Eleven

2017/18 was another exciting season with a new, young group of players trying to make their own mark on the season.

After the last season’s disappointing finish, I hoped the team could take that next step which proved to be very difficult. On a personal note, I felt the season to be very rewarding leading a young group who were very organised and prepared. I was very impressed with the 4th XI’s desire to train hard, learn and compete at training and then watch their competitive attitudes improve with each game throughout the year. The majority of the team hadn’t played together as we had a much younger inexperienced group. Over 10 new players came through the 4th XI.

The result against Footscray in the 1st round was fantastic after winning the semi-final in season ‘16/17 against them. It was a great start to the year with Liam Brown (5-24) bowling us to a close win. Then winning next game against Fitzroy-Doncaster (Tom Sudano 57) chasing 178 for victory was a tremendous effort.

As the 2nd half of the season was progressing, the players started to realise that finals may have been a possibility, the focus dropped off, mainly due to lack of numbers on the list, and inexperience shone through. As a result of playing smart, competitive cricket, we were able to get over the line in some close matches but, ultimately, we lost 3 close games through the year that set us up to miss finals.

Beating Melbourne towards the end of the season, when they hadn’t lost a game, was also a top highlight. The 4th XI finished 12th on the ladder after the home and away season with 7 wins and 10 losses.

From a playing perspective, it was great to see Prahran’s next group begin their journey. Special mention to Liam Brown, Kevin Seth and Callum Elvins for progressing up to the 2nds and Liam onto the 1st XI. Batting skills throughout the year were hot and cold however we saw some exciting innings from Jake Bailey, Tom Sudano and Ollie Maharaj. Huw Gatford was ever-reliable at number 3 and missed out on a half century too often.

From the beginning of the season, our bowling stocks consisted of a good balance of spin and seam, with Liam McGain and Ben Beaton leading the way for most of the season. All the bowlers displayed first class work ethics. Ben Beaton, who won the 4th XI bowling award, was getting more consistent with each game, taking a fantastic 4/20 against Melbourne. Tom Sudano 5/46, also made a big impact against Melbourne – both were great to watch. Further bowling highlights included the all-round talent of Ollie Maharaj, who was playing above his years, and our spin twins Liam McGain and Dev Jhamb who produced some dominant spells. No other opposition had two young quality spinners. It was a joy to captain our bowling attack week in week out.

Our best bowlers for the season included Liam McGain, Dev Jhamb, Ben Beaton, Ollie Maharaj, Tom Officer and Tom Sudano. And with the bat, Huw Gatford, Tom Sudano, Dev Jhamb, Jake Bailey, Cameron Hemp and as an all-rounder Ollie Maharaj.

Personal award winners: Batting : Huw Gatford Bowling : Ben Beaton Fielding : Huw Gatford It would be remiss of me to not thank each and every player who played in the 4th XI, with a special mention to Huw Gatford for taking the keeping role for most of the season. His dedication was great.

Finally, a BIG thank you to our Team Manager, Bruce Beaton, who worked tirelessly for the team. Also, to Barry Neivandt for his support throughout the season, and Alistair Gumley for his match day support. I thoroughly enjoyed this season leading a great group of good young men.

Off the field, I thought the club was very well organised and always very welcoming to myself and my family, Even though we finished mid table this season, I hope the young group can take the next step forward in season 2018/19.

Girl's 3rd XI – Development Squad

In season 2017.18 we saw many exciting initiatives develop in the Women’s program at PCC and further strengthen our position as an elite club within Premier cricket.

This season our Development Squad played as a team in the ISEC U15 Boys competition for the first time.

The aim of the development squads has been to develop the skills, knowledge and further the passion of the players to the game and to start a player’s journey at PCC from this point.

The program enables PCC to strengthen its partnerships with the local competitions and representative pathway programs to identify players from 13 to 17 years old and provide a platform for growth through the various grades whilst looking at long-term player retention.

The team played in a mix of 2 day and T20 games in the ISEC u15B competition, and with some nerves from the outset the players showed an ability to play at that level but excel in many games with some individual performances to be remembered.

Future talented players Jaide Anthony and Maddi White led the team, made up of players from predominantly around the southern region. A value to this team is that players could play with their local club and in our development program without a clearance.

The team battled well all season. A couple of games were lost through inexperience but to miss the finals by one game in our first season is terrific.

There were a number of exceptional performance throughout the season - Maddi White with two 50’s, Jaide Anthony, Chloe Harrison and Sophie Harrison amongst the runs. Our bowling was well led by Alex Clancy, Grace Jones and Grace Docherty. We also unearthed some potential future stars in Paris Bowdler, Sahasni Wanigatunga and Uvindee Alujjade Dona.

Many of the players within the team have played at a higher level at PCC including senior level and at representative level.

Congrats to all on a great season. We look forward to doing it all again soon.

Auditor’s Responsibility

Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. We have conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Those standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgement, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the audit considers internal control relevant to the association’s preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view, in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances but not for the purpose of expressing the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the Committee, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.

Independence

In conducting our audit, we have complied with the independence requirements of the Australian professional ethical pronouncements.

Page 44 Audit’s Opinion

In our opinion the financial report of the association has been prepared in accordance with the Association Incorporation Reform Act 2012 including:

(a) giving a true and fair view of the entity’s financial position as at 31 May 2018 and of its performance for the year ended on that date; and

(b) complying with Australian Accounting Standards.

Basis of Accounting and Restriction on Distribution

The financial report has been prepared to assist The Prahran Cricket Club Inc to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012. As a result the report may not be suitable for another purpose.

Dated this 23rd day of July 2018.
