ANNUAL REPORT

SEASON 2018/19

Page 8 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 140th Annual Report and Financial Statement

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Dear Members, Players, Life Members and Supporters,

It’s been roughly a year since I have taken over the Presidency from Phil, big shoes to fill I knew… how big… I probably didn’t quite understand until now! Being more heavily involved with Prahran as President has been challenging at times, invigorating at other times, but beyond anything, a true belief this club has so much potential.

When I took over, the club was still in a phase of regrouping, we had managed our way through the season on- field while Phil and the committee had brought things back into control off field. In my first full year it was clear we needed to set a Vision for the club that would ultimately align everyone on what we aspired to be. The committee, along with several current and past players, coaches, sponsors, life members, CV and CA representatives, spent several sessions refining our Vision and aspirations for the club. We also developed our core behaviours and the pillars that supported the Vision. This was an enormous task and milestone, one the club should be proud of, and one that will help us give belief to what we are trying to accomplish. As with any good strategy once developed, we needed to ensure we had the right personnel to help deliver and enable our plan. This meant we needed a change in our structure, which brought about a change in our male coaching staff, while bolstering our female coaching staff. Change is always difficult, but a year on and I can truly say, we can see the ‘green shoots’. We have built some momentum and it’s gathering pace - with the best truly ahead of us.

Overall, I want to acknowledge and thank those that have played such a significant part in building the base of our plans to ensure we can now start to forge ahead and deliver our Vision for Prahran Cricket Club. Without your commitment and discretionary effort, I am not sure where we may have been. Thank you to all the players, men and women, for supporting the club’s Vision.

Season 2018-19 brought with it signs of great individual performances as well as team performances. The Men’s 3rd XI where consistent all year and fully deserved the top 4 position. To Sam Hill who led from the front and built belief, pride and a sense of ‘how to win’, I thank you. The 3rd XI set the tone for what we as a Club need to represent and, ultimately, how we set our future aspirations.

For the 1st XI, we saw performances that gave one the belief that we’re not far off finals as a team. Who can forget the victory over Fitzroy and the near misses against St Kilda, Carlton and Uni? It could easily have been a different season. Thank you to Jake Hancock returning from Tasmania to the First XI. Jake consistently set the standard and I have no doubt will continue to grow from strength to strength.

The 2nd XI were in the top 8 mix all year, and for the second consecutive year, let it slip through due to some matches being lost from the jaws of victory. The 2nds are a more than capable side and when they put all the parts together could easily beat any team in the competition. Thank you to Steve De Bolfo who came into captain the side and consistently marshalled his troops well.

The Men’s 4th XI had a difficult year, when it came to the scoreboard, but a year where there has been so much learning and development with a strong nucleus of players. I am confident with another year of experience the 4th XI will be a team that is very competitive next season. To Tom Collins who was asked to captain the team, a massive thank you, you were always upbeat, led from the front and truly created the culture we are striving for at Prahran.

We witnessed great progress in the Women’s teams this year. We had a strong 1st X1 side out on the field for the majority of the season which enabled us to finish top of the table with 2 matches in hand. We have continued to see our Junior Development Program pay huge dividends with no fewer than 9 under age Cricket Victoria Pathway players coming through the ranks. With these younger players being guided by and developed

Page 9 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 140th Annual Report and Financial Statement alongside the likes of Jess Duffin, Bron Dawes, Alana King, Emma Inglis, you know you are building momentum. I look forward to seeing further development in the year ahead.

Congratulations to Jess Duffin, Emma Inglis, Alana King and Annabel Sutherland on their selection in the Premier Cricket Team of the Year, we are all incredibly proud of you.

In the 2nd XI, and 3rd XI side playing in the ISEC Under 15 competition, we also saw a number of exceptional performances, with the 2nd XI just missing out on finals but finishing well ahead of where we did the previous year. Thank you to Tim White for his work with the Girls Development Squad which involved a whole heap of winter sessions plus Wednesdays with the senior group and Friday nights with game time. This is a wonderful initiative and is helping to quickly develop the girls and ready them for 1st X1 cricket and beyond. A special thanks to the parents of the girls who helped so much throughout the season.

Cricket Victoria introduced a Men’s ‘Super Slam’ T20 competition outside of normal fixtured matches. Our Super Slam performance was excellent. With a different focus, approach and incredible coaching support from Dimi, we saw the team go 6 and 1 in the round robin section and finish on top of the table. Unfortunately, we came up short by 1 run in the semi-final. I feel we deserved to at least have advanced to the ‘big show’, but such is sport sometimes. So many learnings for the players and I am sure with the right reflection and focus in 2020 we can go one step further.

Congratulations to our state contracted players and Sam Grimwade, Annabel Sutherland, Emma Inglis, Alana King, Kath Hempenstall, Erica Kershaw and Jess Duffin, we are all very proud of your achievements.

To our male coaches, firstly a huge thank you to Julien Weiner, Men’s Head Coach, club legend, Hall of Fame member and Life Member of Prahran Cricket Club. Julien has bought back structure, hard work and has built a great culture around the male program that will put us in good stead for the future. Justin Graham has been an incredible asset in his first year. Justin has done a massive amount of work across the grades even putting his creams on for two matches. Justin, thank you, you have really fitted in exceptionally well and we look forward to your ongoing commitment and guidance. To Bryce who took on the role of Cricket Operations, thank you for your invaluable thoughts and insight and enabling PCC to have by far the best coaching structure. Dimi, with your experience and passion, you gave the Super Slam team such invaluable guidance. To all of you, the time, effort and expertise you gave us is greatly appreciated by all.

To our Female Head Coach, Carl Sandri, your passion is unparalleled and your commitment and focus to female development is much appreciated. Under Carl’s guidance, the 1st XI came so close to bringing home the silverware albeit with a slightly below full-strength team. An almighty effort and a positive indication of Carl’s recruiting and coaching strategies. Season 2019/20 is full of promise. Assistant Coach, Tim White, was a welcome addition to the coaching team and helped enormously with continued development of our players throughout the grades. The 2nd XI had their best finish yet and this is testament to the additional time and focus from Tim.

I would like to thank the committee for their time, effort and dedication to serving the club.

Heidi Sutherland continued to fulfil the role of sponsorship and took on the role of Chair of Maddie’s Shield #3, our biggest fundraising event. As previously documented, Heidi secured notable sponsorships from Linfox and CGU on multi-year arrangements whilst maintaining the on-going relationships with JR Duty Free (re- named as JR Group) and East Malvern Community Bendigo Bank as well as our Premier sponsors. This season Heidi coordinated the well received introduction of guest speakers at Selection Night dinners. Heidi, together with Phil Williamson, also oversaw the recruitment and placement of volunteer Team Managers within our club. This has resulted in a massive benefit for each team on match days with each volunteer developing strong relationships with the club. Heidi was awarded the Ian

Crawford Perpetual award and I couldn’t think of a person who deserved it more. Nigel Parsons with Congratulations and thank you Heidi. Heidi Sutherland

My thanks also to Nigel Hutton. Nigel has given many years to the committee and the club as our media and photography guru. Our social media presence has increased enormously this season thanks to Nigel’s management and guidance. Nigel also spends an enormous amount of time photographing our teams in action and cataloguing the resultant photos to use in newsletters, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and at our Presentation Nights.

John Raglus is another who has served our club for many, many years. He can be relied upon to roll up his sleeves and will always get the job done. Thank you John, for your tireless efforts, in particular, your assistance with Maddie’s Shield #3, general bar duty, 2nd XI match days and your role as our Premier Cricket Delegate. You are a true stalwart of the club.

Page 10 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 140th Annual Report and Financial Statement

Phil Williamson, thank you for your ongoing guidance and support, always a trusted ear, and as I said at the outset, massive shoes to fill. Phil continues to drive our redevelopment program with some traction made this year with regard to the net redevelopment. Work is due to start in August. A feasibility report on the ‘clubrooms’ should also be completed by August with a view on what is possible by 2022. As surely as the sun comes up on a Saturday and Sunday in cricket season, Phil can be seen in his weekend-best work clothes at Toorak Park and Righetti, removing covers, setting sight screens and ensuring the grounds are ready for action. Phil is a true clubman and our beloved ‘assistant curator’.

The Victorian State Labor government has committed $3m to the Toorak Park re-development project.

David Arnold, in the role of Treasurer, we continue to make strides both strategically and on how to better use our funds, thank you for your input.

Thank you also to Lisa Grimwade, who again leant in after Alana resigned mid-season due to personal reasons. Lisa is always so caring, ensuring everyone feels important, whilst keeping everything together. Thank you so much Lisa, you are so much appreciated for stepping in at a time of need.

Thanks to Matt Green from Soul Bird Café, for delivering such wonderful meals every Thursday night, it’s much appreciated. Thanks also to Bruce Beaton - although his son, Ben, was no longer playing at Prahran Bruce was back every Selection Night to assist with dinners. Bruce and his family have now relocated to the country - we’ll miss Bruce’s big personality!

To our Team Managers, volunteering your time was very much appreciated, you have added to the PCC family this year with the passion and commitment you have shown. We are very thankful to Sumukh Karanth, Vinayak Chauhan, Saksham Malik, Chandan Kulkarni, Anubhav Sapra (‘AB’) and Amol Abdagiri.

2018/19 Team Managers received Certificates of Appreciation at the club’s Presentation Night L to R: Amol Abdagiri, Saksham Malik, Sumukh Karanth, Chandan Kulkarni & Anubhav Sapra (missing Vinayak Chauhan) with club President Nigel Parsons (centre)

I would also like to thank more of our valued club volunteers who fulfil very important roles:-

• Our Men’s and Women’s 1st XI scorer, James Higgs, and our Men’s 2nd XI Scorer, Karl Hieser - thank you for your extraordinary on-going commitment to the club. We can always be assured to have the most accurate scorebooks at the end of each match. The club is indebted to you both.

Page 11 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 140th Annual Report and Financial Statement

• Thank you to our 1st XI match day volunteer catering team of Chris Seymour and Rosemary Schlittler, working with our lunch caterer Hannah Roberts. Chris and Rosemary are renowned for providing the most efficiently produced, delicious lunches and afternoon teas in the competition. More often than not, opposing teams and supporters are very complimentary and thankful for the lunches served at our club. Thanks also to Glenys Mooring and Andrea Jackson for their contributions throughout the season.

L to R: Chris Seymour, Margaret Raglus, Rosemary Schlittler, Steve Seymour, Karl Hieser, James Higgs, Jan Gnatt, John Zarb

• Many thanks to our Match Day Managers, Jan Gnatt, John Zarb, Michael Symons and Brett Anthony. Thank you for performing such a crucial role and ensuring our match days go off without a hitch. Jan, specifically to you, you have been a welcome addition to the Prahran CC family. Your incredible support at both Toorak Park and Righetti has been invaluable. We thank you for always being ready to help and going above and beyond.

• Thank you to our Treasurer, Rick Sykes, for providing financial assistance to the club - it is most appreciated.

• Thank you to Stonnington Council for their on-going support. Many thanks to Grant Smethurst for his continuing drive to get the redevelopment started. And to Jessica Edwards and Richard Chambers for their day to day management of our facilities. Huge thanks to Toorak Park and Righetti curator, Mitch Hewitt. It’s a tough job dealing with mother nature on a daily basis!

• To our patrons, Evelyn Danos, Ian Crawford, David Jukes and John Malligan, thank you for your continual support and presence at Prahran Cricket Club. Ian, our conversations are always so valuable, and I appreciate your personal support. And thank you to Evelyn Danos for continuing the family connection as a great supporter personally and for providing such important funding to our club.

• Thank you also to Cricket Victoria’s Premier Cricket Management Team of Mike Ronchi, Peter Binns and Will Rice. We appreciate your support and assistance in season and beyond. To Andrew Ingleton and Cricket Victoria Board Members, we thank and acknowledge your support and management of cricket in our state.

• Our sincere thanks and appreciation to our sponsors - JR Duty Free (JR Group / James Richardson), East Malvern Community Bendigo Bank, CGU, Linfox, RT Edgar, Signature Dentistry, Thrifty Car & Truck Rental Brighton, College Lawn Hotel, 13CABS. We are extremely grateful for your financial support of our club.

I am excited by our prospects for the forthcoming season. Work is scheduled to commence on the new cricket nets in August 2019. The hope is that we will be using the synthetic nets by Christmas and the turf nets in 2019. We continue to recruit across both the Male and Female playing group as we build on our ‘green shoots’ from this year with the desired intent to be competing in finals and fulfilling our objective of becoming the Premier Cricket “Club of Choice”.

I look forward to seeing you soon for season 2019/20.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP

Three very worthy recipients were bestowed with Life Membership at the club Presentation Night on Saturday 4th May at Citipower Centre, Junction Oval. Congratulations to Emma Inglis, Kath Hempenstall and Phil Williamson.

Life Membership acknowledges the significant contribution Emma, Kath and Phil have made on and off the field at Prahran Cricket Club.

Emma and Kath have had prodigious cricket careers including state and national representation. They both came to Prahran when their club Brunswick Park Ladies CC merged with Prahran in season 2014/15. Emma and Kath have been fantastic mentors to the younger female players at our club and thoroughly deserve this recognition. They are definitely True Blues. Thank you to Julie Calvert, Helen Cox (with input from Ando Aparo) and Alana King for their wonderful presentation to Emma and Kath on the night.

Phil Williamson was truly a deserving recipient of Life Membership. He has been involved with Prahran Cricket Club for over 10 years, throughout his son, Chris’ playing days, and beyond. He has been a member of the club’s committee, including stints as President, most recently stepping in during season 2017/18 to re-steer the club back on course. Some may say Phil’s greatest love is an early arrival at Toorak Park and Righetti Oval each Saturday and Sunday to assume the role of ‘assistant curator’! Phil has also been leading the club’s involvement in the Toorak Park re-development. He selflessly commits countless hours to our club and we sincerely thank him for all that he does.

Congratulations to our newest Life Members!

MADDIE’S SHIELD #3

For the third consecutive year, Prahran Cricket Club partnered with Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision and hosted Maddie’s Shield #3 at Toorak Park on Sunday 17th February 2019.

This year, the event comprised a Celebrity Match followed by the live-screening of the BBL Final on the David Mandie ‘big screen’, plus a host of other fun activities for kids and families.

PCC committee member, Heidi Sutherland, chaired the organising committee that put together a fantastic community event and raised significant funding for Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision and Prahran Cricket Club. Thank you to Heidi and the MS#3 committee for their commitment to this cause. Thanks also to players, committee, parents and friends who volunteered their time to ensure a great day was had by all.

COACH'S REPORT Women's Coach

Season 2018/19 was a season that saw many a Prahran player in representative colours throughout the year, from the heights of the WBBL to the WNCL as well as the Junior National pathways competitions and Youth Australian exhibition games and tours. Each of our players were great ambassadors of the Prahran Cricket Club on the professional circuit.

There were also numerous girls that represented their pathway teams in the state championships across all age groups. This was a fantastic achievement and potentially a starting point to future State and National representation through hard work and commitment. This bodes well not only for the women’s cricket program at PCC but also for new players that will join the club, knowing full well that we look forward to developing cricketers far beyond the Premier Cricket level.

Having many representative players within the club presents the club and playing group another positive; opportunities to play in a higher grade than they may have seen themselves playing and thus giving them the exposure to cricket at the higher level. This exposure opened the girls’ eyes to what it really takes to compete at such a high level skills-wise, both mentally and physically.

It was indeed another long season for the girls. We do take a very young group in and although it began to take its toll late, we’ve learnt from previous seasons and we were able to successfully navigate the latter part of the season better than we had previously. This led to, not only a wire-to-wire top of the ladder finish, but also had us in great shape leading & carrying great momentum into the finals campaign.

The finals campaign saw us win our first semi-final in the 50/50 competition in four years due to an outstanding solo performance from Alana King. Grand finals take everything to another level and much of what takes place during the season can’t prepare you for what for the rollercoaster, both mentally and physically, such days take you on. A rollercoaster ride was a great description of how the day actually panned out. Although we weren’t the ones to raise the trophy, our young team of girls will be much better for the experience. I look forward to seeing the progression of those young girls that represented the club so well on the last Sunday of the season as we move forward into future seasons. We now have a stronger all-round playing list than ever before and experiences such as the Grand Final day should prove to be the biggest motivator of all for the playing group preparing for the next season

Prahran CC’s Women’s 1st XI Grand Final team: L to R (back row) Emily Sharkey, Merinda Hale, Molly Ward, Alex Clancy, Sam Deeble, Diya Redhu, Jaide Anthony, Rhys McKenna, (front row) Bronwyn Daws, Alana King, Emma Inglis (capt.), Carl Sandri (coach), Erica Kershaw, Tiana Atkinson

Page 21 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 140th Annual Report and Financial Statement

Our strong 1st XI season saw four players make the Women’s Premier Team of the Year - Emma Inglis, Jess Duffin, Alana King & Annabel Sutherland. Our commitment to development was also recognised with players representing Victoria at the pathways level:-

Victoria U18: Jaide Anthony, Rhys Mckenna, Merinda Hale, Tiana Atkinson, Ava Bennett, Alex Clancy & Annabel Sutherland

Victoria U15: Jaide Anthony, Rhys Mckenna, Maddie White, Ellen Williams, Paris Bowdler

The club was again the beneficiary of strong leadership from captain, Emma Inglis. Emma has been at the forefront of the team delivering on its potential and believes there is more team and individual success to come with the talent we have at the club. She again demonstrated her ability to focus on the task at hand by ensuring everything ran smoothly on game days, even if her preparation at times may have been hectic due to her Vic Spirit and Melbourne Renegades commitments.

The core senior playing group were consistent in pushing high standards at training and games throughout the season and ensured we contested games hard whilst having more fun in the process than any other team. Emma, and the senior playing group, did an outstanding job throughout the season ensuring the playing group were always developing individually, moving forward collectively and learning to play their role within the team.

It was also great to see both Emma Inglis and Kathleen Hempenstall awarded Life Membership to the club. An unbelievable achievement for you both, to be recognised in this manner is an honour and great reward for everything you’ve put in and contributed to the club.

It was a privilege to be able to coach and work with this group of girls across what is a long season (when you consider some players began working on their games as early as June/July). Hopefully all of the players that I have had the opportunity to mentor have not only enjoyed their time in the program but have developed as cricketers, and more importantly, as people.

The talent and potential on display throughout the season was exciting to say the least and together we look forward to setting our sights on further success as a club and as individuals. Collectively, we will be raising expectations again in our quest at being not only the most successful as seen by the combination of on field results and production of players in premier cricket - but also the Club of Choice for talented players around Victoria. There’s no question all of the girls are excited at the challenges that lie ahead and are all prepared to do whatever it takes across the winter months and through pre-season to better themselves individually for the good of the team as we hunt more success in season 2019/20.

I’d like to thank the entire club for the support of the Women’s program across the WP1 & WP2 teams. We all understand the benefits that are afforded to the club and its people with full integration of a women and men’s program and we are no doubt looking to stay leaders of the pack in that regard.

To President, Nigel Parsons and his committee, for their persistent drive, support and efforts in making this program a success - thank you.

Thank you Lisa Grimwade, for being on top of all of the administrative duties that are required to keep the club going and to our much loved and appreciated scorer James Higgs who did so much for us throughout the season and deserves a huge big thank you, an awesome club person and part of what makes PCC so special!

Also, a massive thank-you to my assistant coach Tim White. You’ve been ‘gold’ for the girls and for the club and have consistently been by my side as we experienced both the highs and the lows. Thanks to AB (Anubhav Sapra) for volunteering his time throughout the season as our trusted Team Manager. And most importantly, thank you to all the parents & supporters that have helped or assisted in many ways across the season.

Last but not least I have to thank retiring PCC ‘veteran’ Bronwyn Daws who has been a huge support to me from the day we both entered the club together. Only those closest to the women’s playing group could truly understand the impact ‘Dawsy’ has had on PCC. As we move forward there is no doubt many people will speak of you in the highest regard for so many reasons. I’m sure I speak on behalf of the entire PCC community when I say that you will be missed and we all thank-you Dawsy!!!!!

We look forward to scaling new heights & bringing home one more ‘W’ in season 2019/20!!

COACH'S REPORT Men's Coach

Overall season 2018/19 was one of realignment, building the platform of a sustainable high-performance environment and offering a weekly program that was an enjoyable, and a learning and challenging environment for all players

An objective assessment would say that, as a club, we were more than competitive and at some stage, all four male teams were in contention to play finals

Ultimately only the 3rd XI got to the business end. There is now a clear benchmark for the whole club to move forward from.

Our T20 Super Slam program, so wonderfully led by Dimi and Carl, was a revelation and a rapid learning experience for all of us. As we plan and prepare for the season ahead, many of the lessons we learnt in that campaign will be translated into the rest of our cricket program.

We now look forward to the coming season.

The players and coaches are grateful the club is investing in specific areas identified by the coaching panel and via player feedback. It is vital for us to focus on these areas as we look to improve all that we do.

• Our pre-season program is locked away.

• The transformation of Toorak Park is underway.

• Our coaching panel is in place.

• Our committee and sponsors are aligned on the direction and vision for the club.

It’s now firmly in the hands of the coaches and playing group to confidently, and strongly, do the work required so we’re in the best possible shape to tackle the coming season.

To all the coaches and volunteers, thank you for your efforts, particularly Justin Graham, who in his first season as our head assistant coach, willingly accepted all the work and tasks asked of him and who had such a positive influence around the club.

To the Captains, Jake, Bolf, Hilly, Tom Collins and Ash, thanks for your leadership, patience, support and hard work.

Congratulations to Carl Sandri and Tim White for the outstanding season had by our Women’s teams.

As always, next season will put in front of us all another set of challenges. Embrace them head on.

Let’s have fun together working hard on our cricket and whilst always looking to learn and improve.

This is our journey. Together, let’s make Prahran Cricket Club the Premier Club of Choice.

CAPTAINS' REPORTS Men's 1st Eleven

Season 2018/19 was full of ups and downs and, unfortunately, we didn’t quite gain the momentum needed to make a good run at finals.

We split our first four rounds going into the 2-day format and due to poor weather, two out of our first three 2-day games reverted to 50 over games to produce results across the competition.

It’s fair to say our formats through the season were different on a week to week basis, more so than usual in a season. It was challenging for the players, but it always kept us on our toes thriving for excellence.

The highlight of the season was the Super Slam campaign where we saw some exciting performances from our young cricketers. We went into the quarter final losing one out of six games and full of confidence with the emergence of Lachie Bangs and Pranav Menon leading from the front. Unfortunately, we fell 1 run short against Dandenong in a thrilling game that came down to the last ball.

Lachie Bangs with the highest strike rate in the inaugural Vic Super Slam competition at 183.1.

It is extremely exciting to see the direction the club is going in.

Throughout the season, we had the privilege of witnessing some great individual and team performances, along with some fantastic milestones:

• 150 from Adam Bull against Greenvale. Adam also passed 4000 1st XI runs throughout the year; • A maiden century from exciting young talent, James Billington, who fought his way into the team and when he got there, made an immediate impact; • William Sutherland who made 160 against the best ‘attack’ team of the competition and eventual runners up, Geelong. A beautifully crafted innings under pressure; • Jacob Serry passed 1000 1st XI runs. A great feat by any young premier cricketer; • Sam Cook who joined us halfway through the season as an overseas professional from Essex. A brief visit but in his five games took two, five hauls resulting in two wins for the club; • Jake Hancock’s contribution of 3 centuries (130*, 111 and 105) prior to Christmas; • And special congratulations to Steve Seymour for joining an elite class of 4000 runs and 200 wickets.

The core of our 1st XI has stayed intact and with the inclusion of a few players this off season and the development of the current young core - the club is in a good position. I believe we have what it takes to bring glory to Prahran Cricket Club.

We have already begun our work to prepare for next season, not only as a leadership and coaching group, but as a playing group as well.

I am very proud to be a part of what I believe is going to be something very special going forward.

At Prahran Cricket Club we are very fortunate to have the support of an amazing group of coaches, volunteers & families. Our thanks to you all, and in particular, the following:-

• Julien Wiener & his coaching staff of Justin Graham and Dimitri Masceranhas; • Nigel Parsons, for building club culture and having a long-term vision for Prahran Cricket Club being the Premier ‘club of choice’; • Bryce McGain, for his dedication and commitment to the teams and the club overall;

Page 24 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 140th Annual Report and Financial Statement

• James Higgs & Karl Hieser for the being the best scorers in the competition; • Chris Seymour, Rosemary Schlittler & Hannah Roberts for providing us with fantastic lunches and teas; • Our newly inducted life member, Phil Williamson, for his incredible support and early morning set up with covers and screens; • Sumukh Karanth, our team manager, for supporting us on and off the field with his positive attitude and motivation to help; • To our families, friends & supporters - we never take you for granted and we thank you for your encouragement and support.

Women's 1st Eleven

Season 2018/19 was a season that saw the First XI finish as minor premiers and make the grand final in the 50 over format. Unfortunately, it was not to be the year of our first Premier Firsts Premiership, falling agonisingly short against MCC in the final.

Nevertheless, the year can be viewed as a success as the team improved on its performance from the year before in winning almost all games after Christmas, an area that was not performed well the year prior.

Both the young guns and the experienced stood up throughout the year when called upon with a special mention to Alana King who almost single-handedly won the semi-final with both bat and ball. Some outstanding achievements throughout the year also included a record partnership between Jess Duffin and Merinda Hale against Plenty Valley and 2 centuries to Annabel Sutherland including her first at premier 1st XI level.

On behalf of the team, I would like to recognise the efforts of Head Coach Carl Sandri who again showed both knowledge and passion towards his role and the improvement of the team and club. Also, a big thank you to Tim White in assisting Carl and developing the next generation of PCC champions. A big thank you to Lisa for her administrative genius and to the committee for their ongoing support.

Finally, a big thank you to Bron Daws who announced her retirement at the end of the season. Her competitive spirit and fun nature will be missed at both training and in games.

Men's 2nd Eleven

The 2018-19 season began with high expectations for success. The 2nd XI had missed a finals birth from the previous season finishing in 9th position and outside the top 8 by just 1 point. With the return of Jake Hancock from Tasmania to captain our 1st XI, the arrival of Pranav Menon (India) and Cam McPhan (Bairnsdale) and the ongoing growth of our younger players Kevin Seth and Callum Elvins, there was notable depth added to the senior squad, thus strengthening the 2nd XI ranks.

Unfortunately, history would repeat itself. Relying on results to go our way in the final round of the season, an almost outright victory over Melbourne Cricket Club at Toorak Park was not enough to break into the top 8 and kick off a finals campaign for the 2nd XI this season. Again, after finishing a heartbreaking 1 point outside the top 8 in 9th position on strong percentage with 7 wins, 7 losses and 2 draws, it can only be seen as a year of lost opportunity for team success from a highly talented senior squad.

The season was filled with some dominant team and individual highlights, including:-

• Prahran 4/215 defeating Footscray (all out 83) • Prahran 5/297 defeating Ringwood (all out 108) • Prahran 260 defeating Melbourne (all out 108 and 7/166) • James Billington (101 vs Footscray and 168 vs Carlton) • Travis Jackson (6 half centuries) • Arjun Dhull (185* vs Ringwood) • Nick Morrey (120 vs Melbourne) • Liam Brown (7/53 vs Northcote) • Adam Hutton (5/42 vs Monash) • Nigel Hunt (5/31 vs Melbourne) • Matt Wilcox (4/58 & 91 vs Geelong) • Callum Elvins (4/41 & 36 vs Frankston) • 99 run match winning 10th wicket partnership vs Greenvale (Cam McPhan 56 & James Boyce 47*) Rnd 9 Prahran v Ringwood - Arjun Dhull’s 185*

Like any team that finished mid-table at the end of the season, individual highlights were not enough to bring the team the success we all strive for. Throughout the season we played good cricket for long periods, however, a handful of small lapses in key moments led to not being able to close out games and saw a premature end to our campaign. A final over loss vs 17/18 Premiers, St Kilda in Round 1, a last ball loss vs Dandenong, and a faulted run chase vs an improving Casey South Melbourne, was arguably the difference between a 9th place finish and cementing a top 4 ladder position.

Pleasingly, the 2nd XI competed in all matches throughout the season with the exception of a one-day clash vs Melbourne University (eventual 18/19 Premiership winners), where we were outplayed and given a benchmark for performance at this level. Mid-season retirements of senior squad members - Ryan Hartley (1st XI wicket keeper), Shaun Miller (1st XI batsman), Rowan Bricker (4000 club runs) and Adam Hutton (169 club wickets @ 22.96) - caused mild disruption that was manageable and inevitably has provided opportunity for other players and a new direction. Arjun Dhull (574 runs @ 52.18), Travis Jackson (545 runs @ 41.92), and Liam Brown (26 wickets @ 22.96) were all strong contributors to the 2nd XI throughout the season pressing for higher honours at times.

With club legend Bryce ‘Clarrie Grimmett’ McGain stepping away from the 2nd XI captaincy at the end of the 2017-18 season to take on the Director of Cricket role, there was an increase in opportunity and responsibility for emerging spinners James Boyce and Blake Parsons. The two left arm finger spinners did not disappoint, often bowling in tandem, consistently controlling games with economical bowling and taking wickets at crucial times. Following the retirement of 1st XI spinner Nathan McNally, the 2019-20 season is shaping up to be an exciting one for both, with the opportunity to play at the next level if the required work is done.

On a personal note, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee members, administrators, volunteers, sponsors and coaches for making it possible to return and play at the Prahran Cricket Club. It is evident that a mountain of hard work has been put in and the club has never been in better shape to move

Page 27 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 140th Annual Report and Financial Statement forward. Following an early conversation with newly appointed senior coach, Julien Wiener, returning to the club in a leadership role was an easy decision to make and a personal challenge that I have enjoyed immensely.

Further notable mentions are due to our match day manager, Vin, Phil Williamson (Life Member) for above the call of duty match day curating, long-standing 2nd XI scorer and friend, Karl Hieser, and lastly the playing group for their ongoing support throughout the season.

Looking ahead to the 2019-20 season, with stability in the coaching group and another year’s experience for our senior squad, the 2nd XI is well positioned to expect team success whilst continuing to provide a platform to unlock future 1st XI cricketers.

See you all again next season.

Women's 2nd Eleven

The pre-season started in August with sessions at Xavier College and Hawthorn indoor centre. It was evident from the first session the playing group was keen to put their best foot forward and improve their skills. The enthusiasm carried over into round one and we hit the ground running with a great win away at Ringwood.

The momentum created from that win helped make this season for the Women’s 2nd XI an enjoyable season with some fantastic results. The group showed major improvements, not only individually as players, but also as a team unit. All the girls who played in the team this season played with positivity and a team first attitude which definitely made coaching them easier due to the attitude they brought to both training sessions and game day.

There were some excellent results including a win over eventual premier MCC away from home and a nail biter in the T20 with a very young team against eventual finals team EMP - this showed us there is plenty of talent in this young group.

There was certainly a massive improvement in the way the girls started to play the game, which saw them rewarded with double the number of wins from last season. That being said, we are always looking to improve and I’m sure with continued hard work the rewards will come.

We had 28 girls play in the 2nd XI this season due to having 9 girls unavailable at various times whilst representing Vic Country and Vic Metro at Under 15 and Under 18 level. Whilst somewhat disruptive, this provided us with an opportunity to assess our playing future. Opportunities were given to some of our younger players from the Girl’s 3rd XI development squad to play up and experience cricket at Premier level. May I say, the signs are certainly looking good for the future of the club with the female talent we are continuing to bring through our development squad into Premier Cricket.

The girls fought out the season right to the last ball but unfortunately just couldn’t quite get the win in the last game to miss the finals by one point!!

It was really pleasing to see the way the girls went about their cricket and, although a very young group, played in a manner the was well beyond their years.

To our captain Maggie McPhee who did a super job bringing all the girls together and being a great example to the younger girls, thank you for your support and leadership. The team spirit shown was fantastic. Also, to Ava Bennett who stepped in as captain in Maggie’s absence, thank you. You were also a huge support to Maggie and the girls on match days. Thanks also to Bron Daws who stepped in as captain on occasion and really led the way with the young girls. Congratulations “Dawsy” on a fantastic career and being an awesome club person and inspiration to the younger girls.

Captain Maggie

I would like to thank the committee for all their hard work and support and allowing me to be part of a fantastic club.

Also thank you to all the parents and family members who came down to the games, cheered the girls on and did what needed to be done to help things run smoothly and most importantly drove the girls to all their training sessions and matches.

Page 29 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 140th Annual Report and Financial Statement

Special thanks to our team manager, David Harrison, who took care of everything on match days and behind the scenes. David, your work is very much appreciated I couldn’t have done it without your help.

Jan, our exceptional ground manager at Righetti Oval who took care of the ground set up, lunches, drinks etc. thank you!

I would very much like to personally thank Head Coach, Carl Sandri. Thank you so much for all your support, guidance and trust that you put in me. There is no doubt that PCC is the envy of every premier club with the program you run. Our program is 100% the best women’s program in premier cricket. Under your guidance, we will continue to develop talent that will go on to play WNCL, WBBL, nationals and state championships.

All in all it was a great year for the girls who played in the 2nd XI this season with a number of girls performing well enough to earn promotion to the 1st XI and continuing to shine. Fantastic individual performances include half centuries to Rebecca Heenan and Ava Bennett (also 4 wickets in the same game) and with the ball, Jaide Anthony 4 and 3 wickets in successive games, Maggie McPhee 4 wickets against Plenty Valley and Diya Redhu 3 wickets in 3 consecutive games.

Finally, to all the girls who played in the 2nd XI, thank you for being such an impressive group of young women and I look forward to seeing all of you continue on your cricket journey and keep improving. Hopefully we can go that one step further next season and make finals.

Men's 3rd XI

Picture this. It’s Saturday morning. The forecast temperature is 30 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. Your WhatsApp group messages are going off with your mates planning their day watching horses run down the Flemington straight or enjoying a few drinks and a swim at Portsea back beach. But not you, you are sitting at High Society enjoying an egg and bacon brioche roll and a latte with one sugar, about to embark on a 40-minute drive to play cricket on an oval with no change-rooms.

The choice for most people would be simple; throw the suit on or grab a beach towel. However, those people weren’t playing in Prahran Cricket Club’s 3rd XI, surrounded by eleven of the best blokes, fighting and scrapping to win. If they were, they would realise a game in the 3rds would have trumped all!

There were highs… watching Pranav Menon smash Casey-South Melbourne to all parts of the park and playing a home final in-front of a large crowd at Toorak Park. There were also lows… collapsing against Monash Tigers and being bundled out of finals by Northcote. All in all, what a season it was!

The 3rd XI played a ruthless and uncompromising brand of cricket, epitomised by disciplined victories against Melbourne, Frankston-Peninsula and Melbourne University. The team’s strength was clearly its ability to wear sides down with relentless pressure and discipline whilst bowling and fielding. Our bowlers bowled nearly 200 maidens during the season.

Our batsmen also contributed with outstanding performances. Highlights included some brave innings in trying conditions against Kingston-Hawthorn and a brutal demolition job of Fitzroy-Doncaster’s pedestrian bowling attack.

Individual highlights from the season include:

• Kevin Seth and Nick Stone each taking 5 wickets in an outright victory; • John ‘Jack’ Flynn opening the batting and successfully launching several opening bowlers over their heads; • Cameron McPhan, Pranav Menon, Nicholas Blaich and Thomas Sudano scoring 100s; • Nouman Ashgar spinning out Melbourne in forty degree heat; • Nigel Hunt and Nick Stone each taking in excess of 25 wickets and bowling 65 maidens during the season; and • An all-round team performance at Presentation Night.

An enjoyable season that reinforced why we love cricket and revealed to us, in the famous words of Nigel Hunt and me, this is why we give up the races and the sea!

Thanks to the committee, coaching staff, volunteers including the great Saksham ‘Sam’ Malik, and all at Prahran Cricket Club for your support throughout the season.

Men's 4th Eleven

The 2018/19 4th XI season was one that can be described as a true learning experience for our players as well as a lot of close games.

After 3 close losses to start the season, the boys really gained valuable experience from the white ball games and took that experience into our first red ball game of the season against Greenvale. After restricting Greenvale to 135 (4/18 Taj Kensley and 3/4 Ash Khedkar), Prahran passed Greenvale’s score and posted 190 with a lead of 65. Bala Dhulipala and Taj Kensley were the star men in Greenvale’s second innings as they both took 3 quick wickets each and dismantled their top order. However, in the end we couldn’t achieve 10 points but a great result nonetheless and a big 6 points!

Whilst, the results didn’t always go our way leading into Christmas, I felt the growth of the players was evident. Week in week out the boys would give their all at training and really listened and learnt from advice given and developed their games extensively.

Without a doubt one of the highlights of the season was our Round 10 clash with Melbourne University, where our assistant coach Justin ‘Jussie” Graham would play his 300th game of Premier Cricket. An absolutely outstanding achievement Jussie! With a brilliant 71* from the man himself ably assisted by Ask Khedkar’s 62, Prahran posted 7/205 from our 45 overs. The game came down to the wire in the last over with Uni needing 9 to win with 2 wickets in hand. Taj ‘Ice Man” Kensley stepped up big time as he only conceded 6 runs to give us the win by 2 runs and celebrating Jussie’s 300th game in style.

From there the boys really began to hit their straps and put together some back to back performances. A great win against Fitzroy (a top 8 side at the time) was capped off by a convincing win against Frankston and again falling all so close to 10 points. We were unlucky to not get the win against Geelong (who finished 8th) as their last wicket managed to hang on for the last 8 overs resulting in a draw.

Prahran Cricket Club’s Men’s 4th XI

From a playing perspective, there were many great performances throughout the season as the potential of the players was shown.

From a batting point of view, Ash Khekdar’s consistent performances throughout the season at the top of the order averaging 30 and scoring over 300 runs was excellent and the younger batsmen in the team learnt a lot from Ash. The ever-reliable Huw Gatford did a tremendous job batting at 4 and was rewarded with higher honours playing 3rd XI cricket as well as newcomer to the club Will Clarke joining Huw in the 3rd XI. Mitch Sennitt, Gus McKenzie and Ollie Maharaj in the middle order consistently helping us post big totals. Mitch’s 65* against Geelong batting with the tail, Gus’ consistent 30-40’s in white ball cricket and Ollie holding his nerve against Fitzroy hitting the winning runs was a great achievement. Batting with Ollie at the time was Jack Nichols who hit a match winning knock of 56* in the same game holding his nerve and being there at the end. Jack’s experience and ‘big’ physical presence in the side cannot go unnoticed and did a tremendous job as wicket keeper for us. Cam Hemp who missed the second half of the season due to school cricket, played a glorious knock against Northcote scoring 158 where our total score finished on 237. Shadi Sideek and Mark Abson were two players who worked incredibly hard all year and played some good cricket throughout the year. Both undoubtedly have big futures at the club.

Page 32 Prahran Cricket Club (Incorporated) 140th Annual Report and Financial Statement

From a bowling point of view, the team was blessed with talent. Taj Kensley and Bala Dhulipala led from the top taking 18 and 15 wickets respectively for the season. Gus McKenzie and Ollie Maharaj also had great seasons with the ball playing various roles throughout. All four quicks are ones to keep your eyes on and all have a very bright future at the club. Our spin kings Max Anson and Liam McGain had great seasons each taking 12 wickets for the year and complemented each other nicely.

Overall, whilst a 15th place finish is by no means disappointing, it was not a true reflection of the talent that this group has. Apart from big losses to number 1 and 2 in our comp (Carlton and Melbourne), the boys fought all the way to the end in all matches. Looking back, if a couple of close losses and 3 very close outright victories went our way, it would have been quite a different season altogether for us.

Finally, a big thank you from me to all the behind the scenes work at the club. Our team manager Chandan did a fantastic job all year. To the ever-reliable, and king of Righetti, Jan Gnatt, for his match day support. To Julien Weiner, Justin Graham, Bryce McGain, Jake Hancock, Steven De Bolfo, Sam Hill, Michael Symons, Phil Williamson and Lisa Grimwade for their support throughout the year.

Girl's 3rd XI – Development Squad

The 2018/19 season began in June 2018 when the club started its recruiting drive to further strengthen our True Blues Talent program with an emphasis on skills, development and game enrichment. Assistant Women’s Coach, Tim White, was active in contacting potential players and designing trial sessions which would enable the club to identify talented players to join our Development Squad.

From these True Blues Talent sessions we were lucky enough to produce a squad of 12-14 girls who all had a passion for the game and desire to improve. We were extremely happy with the talent of the girls who made up the final squad.

The Development Squad played as a team in the ISEC U15 Boys Ray Cleary Shield which was led by Jaide Anthony and Maddie White. This was the 2nd season playing in this division/grade for half of the team. The team played a mix of 2 day and T20 games over the course of the season. It was evident we had a very talented and determined team who wanted to succeed from the first round.

The season began well with the girls banding together in the first three rounds producing some competitive results and individual performances to be recognised. There were some milestone batting results from Jaide Anthony, making her first 100 and Ellen Williams making 50. We also had some great individual bowling performances from Maddison Heitlinger and Sahasni Wanigatunga. Unfortunately, the momentum was disrupted by five weeks of inconsistent weather which impacted on the team and ended in three rounds being drawn.

The girls fought back after the Christmas break and managed to only miss the finals by one game.

Amongst the squad there were a number of players who had the opportunity to play at a higher lever at PCC in the 1st and 2nd XI. Some of the girls also represented their regions in the Youth Premier League championships and five players were selected across the Victorian U15’s Metro and Country squads.

Overall, it was a very positive year and the girls all showed improvement across many aspects from individual skills and development, to game day experience.

Thank you to Alana Baldi for taking on the role as Coach. The players and parents appreciate your efforts and the time you dedicated to the team during the season.

Also, a big thank you to all the parents for supporting the girls and assisting in the smooth running of the team with the provision of food at our home games, scoring and ground preparation. A special thankyou goes to our dedicated umpires Steve Williams and Mark Cooper who took on the role for the whole season and never once complained.

Like any program we are always striving to be the best we can and looking to make improvements to ensure success. To all the girls who are now moving onto senior cricket, good luck in your endeavours. For those of you who will be returning next season we look forward to watching your ongoing improvement as we continue to bring in new talent to our program.
