Melbourne Vs Richmond Today’s Match This is the tenth season of the Australian men’s domestic 20-over tournament, the Big Bash League (BBL10). This season each team will play its seven competitors twice in the 56-match home and away 2020/21 season beginning on 10 December, 2020 and concluding on 26 January, 2021. The five-team final series (as for BBL09) will then take place. The Eliminator will be played between the teams finishing fourth and fifth with the loser bowing out of the finals followed by the Qualifier between first and second, the Knock-out between third and the winner of the Eliminator, the Challenger between the winner of the Knock-out and the loser of the Qualifier while the Final will be played between the winners of the Qualifier and the Challenger. A new rule applies to BBL10. One Bash Boost Point will be available for each match. It will be claimed by whichever team has the higher score at the 10-over mark in their innings. If the scores are tied at the 10-over mark the teams will each earn 0.5 points. The Stars have the most impressive and consistent record of all teams, only missing the finals in BBL07 (2017/18) when, to add insult to injury, they finished bottom of the table. Notwithstanding, the Stars have yet to win a final; their record in eight finals appearances being three runners-up and beaten semi-finalists five times. After nine seasons of the tournament the only other team yet to win a final is the Hobart Hurricanes. The Renegades, while having a less impressive finals appearance record overall than the Stars, have won one title (BBL08) when they defeated the Stars narrowly at their home ground, Docklands Stadium. In their other final appearance in BBL02 the Renegades were eliminated at semi-final stage by the Brisbane Heat; the men from the north going on to win the tournament. Player Squads Melbourne Stars Glenn Maxwell (captain), Hilton Cartwright, Jackson Coleman, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Ben Dunk, Andre Fletcher (West Indies, St. Lucia Stars, Peshawar Zalmi, Sylhet Thunder), Seb Gotch, Liam Hatcher, Clint Hinchliffe, Dilbar Hussain (Lahore Qalandars, Southern Punjab), Zahir Khan (Lancashire, Jamaica Tallawahs, Nangarhar Leopards), Nick Larkin, Nick Maddinson, Lance Morris, Tom O’Connell, Nicholas Pooran (West Indies, Barbados Tridents, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Kings XI Punjab), Will Pucovski, Billy Stanlake, Marcus Stoinis, and Adam Zampa. • Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection
Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection Hamish Thorburn Dr Michael Forbes The University of Queensland 26/02/2015 1 1 Abstract An attempt was made to try and select the Australian Test Cricket Team for then-upcoming series against India in December-January 2014-2015. Data was collected pertaining to 37 Australian cricket players, relating to both recent form (the 12 months prior to commencement of the project) and career form across multiple formats of the game. The team was selected using a mixed-integer- programming (MIP) model, after processing the statistics collected to create usable parameters for the model. It was found that the team selected by the MIP model shared only 5 of the 11 players with the actual team selected by the Australian Board of Selectors to compete in the series. When altering parameters of the model, it was found that the batting diversity of the team could be doubled while only losing 0.008 of the available talent of selected players. The reduced costs were calculated to determine how close unselected players were to being selected, and what they would have to increase their batting/bowling averages to be considered for selection. Finally, we compared the ICC player ratings to our calculated batting and bowling indices, to try to determine the optimal weighting between the different statistics. It was found that batting average was most important in batting performance (but was more important in test matches than one-day matches) and that bowling average and economy were equally important in bowling performance. 2 Introduction 2.1 The Game of Cricket Cricket is a sport composing of opposing teams of 11 players each side.
