DIEGO MATHEUZ Conductor

Diego Matheuz is a graduate of the internationally known Venezuelan Sistema, and is already widely known as one of the most promising talents from the Americas. Diego held the title of Principal Conductor of Teatro la Fenice from September 2011 to 2015, and continues to return regularly. From 2013 to 2016 Diego was also Principal Guest Conductor of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Last season he conducted the Konzerthausorchester Berlin at the ECHO Klassik Awards, broadcast live on ZDF TV.

An accomplished opera conductor, this season Diego returns to Spain for his debut at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia conducting Madama Butterfly (following his Spanish opera debut at the Liceu Barcelona in the 2014/15 season). Later this season Diego will conduct a double bill of Wolf-Ferrari’s Il Segreto di Susanna and Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine at the Teatro Regio Torino featuring soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci, and Rossini’s Adina o Il califfo di Bagdad at the Rossini Festival Pesaro. Last season he gave significant performances in Germany with Rigoletto at the Deutsche Oper and Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Deutsche Staatsoper. Diego made his professional opera debut in October 2010 conducting Rigoletto at Teatro la Fenice, and following his appointment as Principal Conductor he conducted two operas and several concerts a season in Venice including a Tchaikovsky symphony cycle and productions of La Traviata, La Bohème, The Rake’s Progress and Carmen. He has twice conducted the prestigious New Year concert at Teatro la Fenice, broadcast live on RAI television and subsequently released on DVD.

Diego’s orchestral engagements this season are focused in Europe, where he conducts the Brussels Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, Orchestre National de Bordeaux Aquitaine, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana and Warsaw Philharmonic among others. He also returns to Japan to work with Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra.

Building a strong early career in Italy, in October 2008 Diego made his debut with Claudio Abbado’s Orchestra Mozart in Bologna. A year later he was appointed their Principal Guest Conductor. In September 2009, he joined the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale Santa Cecilia as replacement for their Music Director, Antonio Pappano on tour in Milan, Turin and Lucerne, and has made several subsequent appearances in Rome. Other Italian institutions Diego has worked with include Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai Torino, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala and the Spoleto Festival.

European orchestral highlights outside Italy have featured performances with the Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Gurzenich-Orchester Kölner Philharmoniker, hr-Sinfonieorchester and Philharmoniker Hamburg in Germany; Sinfonieorchester Basel, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Philharmonia Zürich in Switzerland; Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre National de Lyon and Orchestre Chambre de Paris in France; the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic orchestras in the United Kingdom; as well as concerts with the Ceská filharmonie, ha-Tizmoret ha-Filharmonit ha-Yisre'elit, Malmö SymfoniOrkester, Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, Kungliga Filharmoniska Orkestern, Wiener Kammer Orchester and Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Diego has also worked substantially in Spain; with the Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España, Orquesta Simfonica de Barcelona i Nacional di Cataluyna, Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León in Valladolid and Oviedo Filarmonia.

Further afield, in North America he’s conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, as well as the NHK Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Hyogo Performing Arts Centre Orchestra and Seiji Ozawa's Saito Kinen Orchestra in Japan.

Diego maintains a strong association with his native orchestras, returning regularly to Caracas, and in 2013 he was appointed Associate Conductor of the Sinfónica Simón Bolívar de Venezuela. In summer 2013 he took part in the notable Sistema residency at the Salzburg Festival, appearing with the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra of Venezuela.

Born in 1984, Matheuz began his violin studies in his hometown of Barquisimeto before moving to Caracas. His international debut as a conductor took place with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela on 14th March 2008 in the prestigious Casals Festival in Puerto Rico.
