Mental Nocturnes: Night Thoughts on Man and Nature in the Poetry oj Eighteenth-Century America IGHT BECAME A LITERARY TOPIC of the acutest interest during the early decades of the eighteenth century. Only at night did Nthe stars' lucent argument on behalf of a universal, providential order stand fully revealed. Yet night, too, was the period when imagination—sponsor of dreams, delusions, and fantasies—held sway. When the sun set the question arose as to whether reason or imagi- nation possessed the greater power. Would Newton's glorious truth be seen arrayed across the heavens? Or would the clouds of fancy obscure that glory with a melancholic gloom? British and British-American writers tested their mental dispositions in nocturnal verse to discover whether lucid reason or the more troublesome imagination would prevail. Some British writers— Thomas Parnell, Robert Blair, Bishop Porteus, Charles Emily—em- ployed the "night piece" to complain about man's inability to tran- scend his situation in "this world of sin and death."1 Others—James Thomson, John Gay, and David Mallet—sought to redeem night by viewing it as an essential component in nature's harmony.2 In America the "night piece" became a particularly important vehicle for ex- pressing a pessimistic view of the relation of man to nature. The Dragon of Wantley has rarely been performed since its premiere in 1737, despite receiving more performances in the 18th century than any opera by the celebrated Mr. Handel and holding the London stages in thrall for 45 years. Presenting an unfamiliar work to modern audiences is a risky undertaking. At Haymarket Opera Company we delight in finding musical gems that have been buried in history’s jewel box, polishing them up, and putting them on display for you. Our exceptional team of artists and our steadfast board of directors have given their hearts and souls to this exciting and unusual project so that you might have a memorable experience. Gesticulated Shakespeare: Gesture and Movement in Silent Shakespeare Films Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jennifer Rebecca Collins, B.A. Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2011 Thesis Committee: Alan Woods, Advisor Janet Parrott Copyright by Jennifer Rebecca Collins 2011 Abstract The purpose of this study is to dissect the gesticulation used in the films made during the silent era that were adaptations of William Shakespeare's plays. In particular, this study investigates the use of nineteenth and twentieth century established gesture in the Shakespearean film adaptations from 1899-1922. The gestures described and illustrated by published gesture manuals are juxtaposed with at least one leading actor from each film. The research involves films from the experimental phase (1899-1907), the transitional phase (1908-1913), and the feature film phase (1912-1922). Specifically, the films are: King John (1899), Le Duel d'Hamlet (1900), La Diable et la Statue (1901), Duel Scene from Macbeth (1905), The Taming of the Shrew (1908), The Tempest (1908), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1909), Il Mercante di Venezia (1910), Re Lear (1910), Romeo Turns Bandit (1910), Twelfth Night (1910), A Winter's Tale (1910), Desdemona (1911), Richard III (1911), The Life and Death of King Richard III (1912), Romeo e Giulietta (1912), Cymbeline (1913), Hamlet (1913), King Lear (1916), Hamlet: Drama of Vengeance (1920), and Othello (1922). In the seventeenth century, the new market economic paradigm became increasingly dominant, replacing the old feudal economy. Theater functioned to “explain” this arrangement to the general populace and gradually it became part of what I call a “culture of empire” – a culture built up around the search for resources and markets that characterized imperial expansion. It also rationalized the depredations the Empire brought to those whose resources and labor were coveted by expansionists. This process intensified with the independence of the thirteen North American colonies, and theater began representing Native Americans and African American populations in ways that rationalized the dominant society’s behavior toward them. By utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, this research attempts to advance a more nuanced and realistic narrative of empire in the early modern and early republic periods.
