The 'Lost Shows Appeal' Was Launched in June This Year to Tie In The ‘Lost Shows Appeal’ was launched in June this year to tie in with Kaleidoscope’s www.lostshows.com website. The purpose of the appeal was track down recordings of otherwise lost TV and radio shows that might exist in the lofts, sheds and cupboards of the general public. The appeal was promoted on Radio 4’s ‘PM’ programme and with a spot on the BBC website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-13644706). Publicity for the appeal has not been as wide-ranging as we would have liked. However, in spite of this, we’re pleased with the volume of material that has so far turned up (directly and indirectly) through the appeal. Perhaps this year’s biggest haul of material has come courtesy of the estate of the recently deceased radio producer John Fawcett Wilson, who kept a massive archive of radio production tapes from the early sixties through to the late eighties. Although not directly linked to this year’s appeal, his tapes have been worked on as part of the appeal and are listed here (highlighted with a pink flash). Another fertile hunting ground for this year has been among the ranks of retired BBC technical staff. We’ve been concentrating a lot of time into contacting many former BBC film editors, sound recordists, editors and sound supervisors, asking them what they may have kept from their time working at the BBC in the 1960s and 1970s. The response to this has been very encouraging. We’re particularly pleased with the large quantity of unedited (audio-only) television studio recordings, which have been donated from former BBC sound supervisor, Adrian Bishop Laggett. You may have heard some of his material recently used in BBC Radio 2’s recent retrospective on the ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’. Adrian’s tapes are listed here with a green flash. Already some more of this year’s rediscovered material is on its way to find new audiences. Episodes from the BBC’s 1967 Sexton Blake series are due to be released by BBC Audiobooks early next year. There are still a lot of tapes that we are yet to listen to and some of these tapes are listed separately (in rough form), to give you an idea of what other material is yet to be digitised. Naturally all of these hours of audio recordings are set to be offered to the BBC Sound Archive and the British Library, where we are confident that they will find a new permanent (and publicly accessible) home. Special thanks for this year’s appeal go to: Keith Wickham, Matthew North (at BBC South West), Edward Brandon, Keith Raven, David Tombs, Tony Mutimer and Mark Ayres for helping us to transfer all the hours of tape. And: Adrian Bishop Laggett, Howard Billingham, David Alan Jones, Allen Taylor (at the Projected Picture Trust), Roger Bickerton, J.V. Simpson, Jonathan Litchfield, Norman Wright, Ray Hopkins, Martin Imeson, David Roberts, David Wallace, Bill Kocher, Roger Coleman, Ken Fitzgerald, John Clark, Gareth Tilley, Magaret Bates and Mark Lewisohn for coming forward with their recordings. And for all of their time and general assistance: Steve Roberts (at BBC TV Centre), Graham Bedwell, Bill Chesneau, Steve Arnold, Chick Anthony, Christopher Rowlands, Ron Raddon, Mark Simpson (at BBC Radio 2), Peter Crocker (at SVS), Pam Bosworth, John Griffiths, Barry Hawes, Malcolm Johnson, Michael McCarthy, Hugh Barker, Graeme Stevenson, Jeffrey Richards, Chris Gibbs (at BBC Radio International), Matt Budd and Fiona Mackenzie Williams (at BBC Audiobooks), Printz Holman, Mary Kalemkerian (at BBC Radio 4 Extra), Candida Watson (at BBC Ariel), Nigel Deacon, Daphne Ledward, Liz Homewood, Rebecca Smith, Stephanie Brady, China Collins, Sarah Wadeson and Eddie Mair (at BBC Radio 4), Paul Wilson (at the British Library), Paul Vanezis (at BBC Birmingham), Bill Oddie, Simon Coward, John Wiggins, Andrew Martin (at BBC I&A) Dick Fiddy (at the BFI), Simon Anthony, Clare Douglas, Chris Wimble, Chris Perry and anybody else I’ve forgotten. Thanks: Charles Norton N.B. We’ve tried to make these lists as accurate as we can, given the (often fragmentary) information we have. If you think we’ve made a mistake, or missed some information, do let use know. We’re not perfect and I’m sure there’s lots of things we’ve got wrong. Friday February 1 2002 Saturday February 2 2002 To Chiswick this a.m. to shop for K and give him a choice. Got back at twelve, but no sign. Arrived at something after one, animated newsy talk, and an omelette with the blewits and chanterellesI got at the lovely greengrocers - £29.50 a kilo. About two four inch blews and four or five chant. about £3, not bad for such deliciousness. Now it’s Saturday night, and K’s gone, after two wonderful days.I have done nothing except stand up and sit down, and prepare four meals, and I’m exhausted. I fear K might have felt I was lazy or feeble. Well, he started out – ‘Can’t stop here talking, or the light will go’, on the buddleia, ‘which job do you want done first?’ He sawed it right down, and I do see that it’s partly destabilised some bricks. A great relief. I hope that silly fussy man won’t find something else to shout to me about. I was becoming quite reluctant to go into the garden. Horrible to cut anything down, but on balance welcomed it. Comically, the wind was the strongest I’ve heard since I’ve been here. Quite expected a letter of complaint from the next door just as we were cutting down the dangerous bush. They have a ‘patio’ (sic) garden and are clearly nervous of a jungle takeover, or indeed anything they can’t control.

  • Issues of Image and Performance in the Beatles' Films
“All I’ve got to do is Act Naturally”: Issues of Image and Performance in the Beatles’ Films Submitted by Stephanie Anne Piotrowski, AHEA, to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English (Film Studies), 01 October 2008. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which in not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (signed)…………Stephanie Piotrowski ……………… Piotrowski 2 Abstract In this thesis, I examine the Beatles’ five feature films in order to argue how undermining generic convention and manipulating performance codes allowed the band to control their relationship with their audience and to gain autonomy over their output. Drawing from P. David Marshall’s work on defining performance codes from the music, film, and television industries, I examine film form and style to illustrate how the Beatles’ filmmakers used these codes in different combinations from previous pop and classical musicals in order to illicit certain responses from the audience. In doing so, the role of the audience from passive viewer to active participant changed the way musicians used film to communicate with their fans. I also consider how the Beatles’ image changed throughout their career as reflected in their films as a way of charting the band’s journey from pop stars to musicians, while also considering the social and cultural factors represented in the band’s image.

ORAL HISTORY OF THE BBC: ROBIN SC INTERVIEWED BY FRANK GILLARD. SECOND SESSION RECORDED IN BROADCASTING HOUSE, LONDON, 14th January 1981. GILLARD: Let's move on now to the period you spent, quite a brief period really but a very important one, in Radio in the second half of the sixties, when you became Controller Radio 1 8 2. Tell us first of all how the job came to you and forget that I'm here. SCOTT: I had after some three years, three and a half years or so, back with Television Outside Broadcasts, I'd become, not discontented with the job I was doing, but really felt that if I was to realise what I believed to be my potential I should look for an executive position somewhere in the BBC. And thought well why not go back to my first love which was after all Radio, and so I applied for the job of assistant head of Gramophone Department in Broadcasting House. Working therefore to Anna Instone who was Head of the Department for many years, a great many. And I duly applied for this job although it was not at a grade above my own, in fact I don't think it certainly didn't produce any more money, but I wanted in fact to get onto the rung of a different ladder, possibly. I also wanted to get into domestic radio broadcasting which I'd really only contributed programmes to but never enjoyed any kind of executive position, or producer position, having always in radio worked at Bush House.

GERALD THOMAS COLLECTION GERALD THOMAS COLLECTION SCOPE AND CONTENT Documents relating to the career of director GERALD THOMAS (Born Hull 10/12/1920, died Beaconsfield 9/11/1993). When Gerald Thomas died, his producer partner of 40 years Peter Rogers said: ‘His epitaph will be that he directed all the Carry On films.’ Indeed, for an intense 20-year period Thomas directed the Carry On gang through their innuendo laden exploits, and became responsible, along with Rogers, for creating one of the most enduring and endearing British film series, earning him his place in British popular culture. Thomas originally studied to become a doctor, before war service with the Royal Sussex Regiment put paid to his medical career. When demobilised in 1946, he took a job as assistant in the cutting rooms of Two Cities Films at Denham Studios, where he took Assistant Editor credits on Laurence Olivier’s Hamlet (1948) and the John Mills thriller The October Man (1947). In 1949, he received his first full credit as editor, on the Margaret Lockwood melodrama Madness of the Heart (1949). During this time Peter Rogers had been working as associate producer with his wife, producer Betty Box, on such films as It’s Not Cricket (1949) and Don’t Ever Leave Me (1949). It was Venetian Bird in 1952 that first brought Thomas and Rogers together; Thomas employed as editor by director brother Ralph, and Rogers part of the producer team with Betty Box. Rogers was keen to form a director/producer pairing (following the successful example of Box and Ralph Thomas), and so gave Gerald his first directing credit on the Circus Friends (1956), a Children’s Film Foundation production.

Through it, we intend to stress the influence his books and/or the films based on them had on many young generations who, under their shelter, chose a career in medicine. Prize-winning writer and PhD, in his works -formally adorned with his great talent for description and observation- he intermingles naturalism, conflicting passions, medical situations and social criticism. Beyond all discussion about his literary career and his repercussion on film, his influence on those who embraced Medicine following in the steps of his characters, many of whom were nothing more than a reflection of himself, is unquestionable. Keywords: Cronin, Doctor, Writer, Film, Literature. To AJ Cronin, whose works strengthened my decision to become a doctor 19 July, 1896.
