The ‘Lost Shows Appeal’ was launched in June this year to tie in with Kaleidoscope’s www.lostshows.com website. The purpose of the appeal was track down recordings of otherwise lost TV and radio shows that might exist in the lofts, sheds and cupboards of the general public. The appeal was promoted on Radio 4’s ‘PM’ programme and with a spot on the BBC website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-13644706). Publicity for the appeal has not been as wide-ranging as we would have liked. However, in spite of this, we’re pleased with the volume of material that has so far turned up (directly and indirectly) through the appeal. Perhaps this year’s biggest haul of material has come courtesy of the estate of the recently deceased radio producer John Fawcett Wilson, who kept a massive archive of radio production tapes from the early sixties through to the late eighties. Although not directly linked to this year’s appeal, his tapes have been worked on as part of the appeal and are listed here (highlighted with a pink flash). Another fertile hunting ground for this year has been among the ranks of retired BBC technical staff. We’ve been concentrating a lot of time into contacting many former BBC film editors, sound recordists, editors and sound supervisors, asking them what they may have kept from their time working at the BBC in the 1960s and 1970s. The response to this has been very encouraging. We’re particularly pleased with the large quantity of unedited (audio-only) television studio recordings, which have been donated from former BBC sound supervisor, Adrian Bishop Laggett. You may have heard some of his material recently used in BBC Radio 2’s recent retrospective on the ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’. Adrian’s tapes are listed here with a green flash. Already some more of this year’s rediscovered material is on its way to find new audiences. Episodes from the BBC’s 1967 Sexton Blake series are due to be released by BBC Audiobooks early next year. There are still a lot of tapes that we are yet to listen to and some of these tapes are listed separately (in rough form), to give you an idea of what other material is yet to be digitised. Naturally all of these hours of audio recordings are set to be offered to the BBC Sound Archive and the British Library, where we are confident that they will find a new permanent (and publicly accessible) home. Special thanks for this year’s appeal go to: Keith Wickham, Matthew North (at BBC South West), Edward Brandon, Keith Raven, David Tombs, Tony Mutimer and Mark Ayres for helping us to transfer all the hours of tape. And: Adrian Bishop Laggett, Howard Billingham, David Alan Jones, Allen Taylor (at the Projected Picture Trust), Roger Bickerton, J.V. Simpson, Jonathan Litchfield, Norman Wright, Ray Hopkins, Martin Imeson, David Roberts, David Wallace, Bill Kocher, Roger Coleman, Ken Fitzgerald, John Clark, Gareth Tilley, Magaret Bates and Mark Lewisohn for coming forward with their recordings. And for all of their time and general assistance: Steve Roberts (at BBC TV Centre), Graham Bedwell, Bill Chesneau, Steve Arnold, Chick Anthony, Christopher Rowlands, Ron Raddon, Mark Simpson (at BBC Radio 2), Peter Crocker (at SVS), Pam Bosworth, John Griffiths, Barry Hawes, Malcolm Johnson, Michael McCarthy, Hugh Barker, Graeme Stevenson, Jeffrey Richards, Chris Gibbs (at BBC Radio International), Matt Budd and Fiona Mackenzie Williams (at BBC Audiobooks), Printz Holman, Mary Kalemkerian (at BBC Radio 4 Extra), Candida Watson (at BBC Ariel), Nigel Deacon, Daphne Ledward, Liz Homewood, Rebecca Smith, Stephanie Brady, China Collins, Sarah Wadeson and Eddie Mair (at BBC Radio 4), Paul Wilson (at the British Library), Paul Vanezis (at BBC Birmingham), Bill Oddie, Simon Coward, John Wiggins, Andrew Martin (at BBC I&A) Dick Fiddy (at the BFI), Simon Anthony, Clare Douglas, Chris Wimble, Chris Perry and anybody else I’ve forgotten. Thanks: Charles Norton N.B. We’ve tried to make these lists as accurate as we can, given the (often fragmentary) information we have. If you think we’ve made a mistake, or missed some information, do let use know. We’re not perfect and I’m sure there’s lots of things we’ve got wrong.
