It was a bit of a long shot, but you replied in super quick time and said it was being aired in July. I have been trying to track down this film for 50 years as I had a part in it. I remember seeing it on the TV a couple of times in the 1960s but not since and I would love my wife and three daughters to see what I got up to all those years ago. My grandfather was a set construction manager at and he found out that a baby was wanted for a new film. The film was “Come Back Peter” and the baby ended up being me (Baby David). I was only 6 months old at the time so don’t remember much about it. Apparently I was responsible for a script change as I contracted chicken pox during the filming!! As you can imagine, I am thrilled that Talking Pictures not only have the film but intend showing it again – so many thanks for that. I had exhausted all avenues I could think of in my quest and decided it had either been lost or destroyed. I am now really excited at the prospect of seeing it once again and showing it to my grown up family. I’ve sent a still from the film where my screen aunt has just noticed my chicken pox spots. Although my Grandfather worked at Shepperton Film Studios, I think there was a tie-up with Bray Studios, as I believe the exterior shots were filmed around Bray. I must also say how excited I am to read that the film will also be released on DVD in August.” 6 SPECIAL OFFER! Mr Pastry 2-DVD Box Set PLUS Mr Pastry Keyring & Fridge Magnet set all for £25! THE URSE OF HARDBACK C BOOK SHERLOCK HOLMES The Basil Rathbone Story By David Clayton Basil Rathbone is synonymous with Sherlock Holmes. He played the Victorian sleuth in all fourteen Fox/ Universal films of the 1930s and 40s, as well as on stage and radio. For many people, he is Holmes, however, he grew to hate the character. Holmes placed restrictions on his career: before he was an esteemed theatre actor, appearing in Broadway plays such as The Captive and The Swan, the latter of which became his launchpad to greater stardom. In his long career he appeared in many films, including: Love From A Stranger (1937), The Dawn Patrol (1938), The Mad Doctor (1941), Crossroads (1942), Frenchman’s Creek (1944), The Court Jester 1956)( and many more. However, he never escaped his most famous role. Basil Rathbone was not Sherlock Holmes. In The Curse of Sherlock Holmes, biographer David Clayton looks at the behind-the-camera life of a remarkable man who deserved so much more than to be relegated to just one role. It turned out to be absolutely horrible for me; my dear wife Joyce passed away, who truly was my rock, and Dandelion was sold to what turned out be an American crook. I will go into detail of the FBI lawyers and the American federal system later and with more detail in a book that is being written – a must for all insomniacs! Following the Dandelion débâcle, my health and confidence suffered and the fact that the American situation was dragging on made concentrating on films and TV difficult, but after a few years I again got interested in acquiring old film libraries and set about purchasing several old such libraries, from the BBC no less! It took three years of dogged persistence to save these films from literally rotting at the Beeb; libraries such as Butchers, New Realm; mostly British ‘B’ features but of great social value. Having amassed several hundred old feature films what was I to do with them? Broadcasters had little or no interest; one company executive told me “we don’t play black and white after four in the afternoon”. He does now! After months of trying to place the films and with the conviction that quite a lot of people, given the chance, would watch them, the idea of starting our own channel emerged…. Next month: the start of Talking Pictures. Producer Noel Cronin founded Talking Pictures TV and Renown Pictures. Noel is contributing a series of memories to the newsletter over the coming months. Ever since his entrance into the world of film as a young man, Noel has been interested in preserving the heritage of lost and forgotten films, shorts and programmes, and for many years has been gathering, restoring and preserving this wonderful heritage which would otherwise be lost. Noel worked for and the Central Office of Information, and bought the rights to several libraries that owned films which now air on Talking Pictures TV. His career as a producer and editor of films, documentaries and TV series spans several decades.

How to be £15 Eccentric The Essential Richard Massingham 1 DVD | Years: 1934-1951 Black & White Running Time: Approx: 170 min Richard Massingham was known to anyone who went to the cinema in Britain during the 1940s. He starred as a well-meaning but bumbling everyman in a series of imaginative shorts which provided instruction to the British public on everything from how to cross roads to the correct way to sneeze into a handkerchief to bathing in just five inches of water during wartime rationing. Often producing and directing too, his films are marked by a wonderful combination of comedy, instruction, surrealism and whimsy. This new selection from the BFI celebrates Richard Massingham as one of British cinema’s most fascinating and enduring eccentrics. Contents: Dr Massingham says... Tell Me If It Hurts (1934) | Coughs and Sneezes (1945) | Jet-propelled Germs (1948) | Handkerchief Drill (1949) | Another Case of Poisoning (1949) | The Cure (1950) | Surviving the War: The Five Inch Bather (1942) | Post Early for Christmas (1943) | In Which We Live: Being the Life Story of a Suit Told by Itself (1943) | Elopement in France (1944) | An Englishman’s home... Spotlight on: Richard Massingham (31 January 1898 – 1 April 1953) The son of a distinguished newspaper editor, Richard Massingham is noted for directing and starring in a series of public information films made in the 1940s and 1950s. He trained in medicine and was the Senior Medical Officer at the London Fever Hospital, but Richard was always interested in the cinema and made amateur films in his spare time. He made his first short in 1933 which featured the hospital that he worked at. The following year he made a film about a traumatic dental visit:Tell Me If It Hurts (1934), which received critical acclaim. After his film about a lodger preparing for his day, And So to Work (1936), he secured a place with the GPO Film Unit. This prompted him to leave medicine and become a full time filmmaker. In 1938 he registered his company, Public Relationship Films and began making shorts for the Ministry of Information and other government departments. As well as directing the shorts, he appeared in them as a good-humoured figure encouraging audiences to save fuel, sneeze into a handkerchief or bathe in the war recommended limit of “five inches of water.” As an actor he possessed an expressive face with a childlike charm, casting himself as the absent- minded ‘everyman’, (always allowing the audience to feel amused and superior, while the film’s message was firmly instilled). Post-war films such as They Travel by Air (1947) and Pool of Contentment (1946), adopted a similar strategy. Some of his most popular shorts include: The Five-Inch Bather (1942), Young and Healthy (1943), Coughs and Sneezes (1945), What a Life (1948), Handkerchief Drill (1949) and Moving House (1950). As a director, actor and producer, Massingham is often overlooked, but in the 90 or so films he made, there is enough eccentricity and wit to earn him a place beside other individualists of the British short film. His marriage to wife Betty in 1943 was a happy union which lasted for the rest of his life. He died at his home in Biddenden, Kent on 1 April 1953, during production of The Blakes Slept Here, a lavish and curious Technicolour combination of gas advertising and historical content. 21 From the British Film Institute ROUNDABOUT 1963: A YEAR IN COLOUR 1 DVD Years: 1963 Colour | Running Time Approx: 110 minutes £15 A fascinating and unique glimpse back to Britain and its place in the world 50 years ago. William Greene was born in Bristol in 1855. Friese was added to his surname when he married Helena Friese in 1874. He was apprenticed to a photographer before establishing his own business in Bath, where he met John Rudge, who was experimenting with lanterns to create an illusion of movement. Friese- Greene enthusiastically adopted these ideas, experimenting both with Rudge and on his own. In 1885, he opened two photographic shops in London with Esme Collings, who went on to be one of the pioneers of British film-making. Friese-Greene obsessively patented badly thought out devices, while the true advances in making and projecting motion picture films were being made elsewhere. He began experimenting with colour cinematography in 1898, even becoming a rival of the developer of Kinemacolor, G.A. Smith. A court case in 1913 brought by Friese-Greene’s Biocolour system against Kinemacolor brought down the latter, although Friese-Greene was unable to capitalise on the victory as he was beset with financial troubles. He remained an incurable optimist, constructing a camera for taking a series of photographs on a roll of perforated film moving intermittently behind a shutter, the basic principle of a motion-picture camera. Sadly, the camera was incapable of taking pictures at a sufficient rate to capture movement and no successful presentation of moving pictures was given by him. The credit for a successful cinematographic device goes to Thomas Edison. His other inventions in the field of printing – including photo-typesetting – brought him wealth, as did his chain of photographic studios. However, he spent everything he earned on inventing, going bankrupt three times. He died on 5 May 1921 after delivering a speech about the uncertain state of the British film industry to a meeting of the cinema trade at the Connaught Rooms in London. His claim to have been the “inventor of Kinematography” was taken up by film historian Will Day, but a series of articles written by Brian Coe in the 1960s discredited this. He was, however, one of the very first to work on the concept of moving images. Despite his failures, Friese-Greene is nevertheless a founding father of British film. The film,The Magic Box (1951) ensures his place in history is not forgotten. 25 Letters to the Projectionist On this page we bring you some of the interesting letters that have arrived at Talking Pictures HQ this month. We receive many letters every day about film and series requests; please be assured that we do make a note of them all. We acquire new films and series every month, so ‘never say never’! is our motto – but sadly we can’t just play those we’d like to play, without proper licensing and rights in place.
