Greetings Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Over the past two years the Ministry Resource Committee (MRC) has been engaged in relationship building with our churches and members. We have asked the questions, “What are you excited about in your ministry context?” and “What is troubling to God’s heart in your ministry context?” We are excited to celebrate with each of you the many ways in which you have responded to those questions and also to the tangible ways in which the Lord is being lifted up through your ministries and kingdom building efforts.

As we have continued to “live into” the new Presbytery structure, the MRC has realized that we must be more than just a “resource host” that connects churches to resources. We must also be the connector between the finances available for resource/training/services, the connector of churches to those resources, as well as the connector for possible partnerships between churches. During our conversations with you, we heard the good, but we also heard the many needs that exists within our presbytery for area specific trainings, leadership development and fellowship opportunities.

We heard you and we are responding to those needs so that you and your ministries might continue to thrive and spread the love of Christ throughout the seven counties that we serve. After engaging in a discernment process, the MRC has undergone a “Connector” restructure. We have re-aligned our “Connectors” formerly known as “Liaisons” by Presbytery Clusters. It is our hope that this will allow us to work more closely with churches that share some of the same needs and geographical proximity and that would allow for more opportunities for group trainings, fellowship and relationship building.

Over the next few weeks each of your churches will be receiving a personal greeting from your newly assigned “Connector”, but in the meantime, we are providing the new Connector assignments should you have immediate needs.

We look forward to continuing the work of supporting you in ministry today, tomorrow and beyond!

Peace of Christ,

Your Ministry Resource Committee

08/19 PBY 16 Cindy Fisher Statement of Faith

I believe in God Almighty, the Alpha and Omega, who has eternally existed in the Trinity of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. I believe in God as the initial creator of all that exits, visible and invisible. God reveals to us who He is by expressing the divine nature of love and establishing a relationship of Supreme Authority throughout all creation and in relationship with the creation of female and male. Establishing an unforced relationship, God bestowed free will to humans, who in turn abused the privilege of choice; setting up a division of good and evil or separation from God, called sin.

God reveals to us who He is and only He can save us from our sinful nature. In continued creation and love, God manifested this love to become fully human and fully divine in His only begotten son, Jesus Christ (Emanuel or God with us) who came to live among us via the mysterious conception between a Virgin, Mary and the Holy Spirit. Christ grew in this world but not of this world, totally obedient to God the Father and willingly chose to lay down his life through suffering, humiliation, torture and finally hanging upon a cross until death. Christ was then buried in a donated tomb and after three days arose, conquering sin and death for all time, for all people. The resurrection of Christ completely restored and reconciled all creation. Death no longer has the final word. I believe Jesus is resurrected and lives eternally. Christ ascended into heaven where He reigns at the right hand of God and where He will continue to intercede for us until He comes again in glory. I believe in justification through faith in Jesus Christ, who died on the cross so that my sins may be forgiven by the Grace of God.

Christ did not bring us thus far to leave us, but sent the Comforter or Holy Spirit as the Spirit of God operating in community as well as individually. God, through the power of the Holy Spirit, continually gives witness of the Spirit within us by opening our eyes, minds and hearts through the gift of faith so that we may see who Christ really is; our Lord and Savior. Not only the Spirit, we also have the printed Word. I believe God divinely inspired the Bible, which is His guide to us in practice of faith and daily living.

I believe in the holy . The church universal encompasses all faithful people who have relinquished their will and become believers in the work of Jesus Christ on the cross and by way of the resurrection live to Jesus Christ, as He has given Himself to them. Our trust, hope and confidence are in Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone. The beliefs that bind us in Christ, establishes union with Christ, whether in heaven or on earth and creates the communion of “saints.”

In accordance with the Scriptures, I acknowledge two sacraments as instituted by our Lord Jesus Christ; Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Baptism is the sign and seal through which we are joined to Christ. The waters of Baptism symbolize the washing away of all sin and signify that one day we will rise with Him in glory to eternal life. Until then, we daily walk with Him in newness of life. The Lord’s Supper is a remembrance celebration in which, through the elements of bread and wine, the Lord Jesus Christ pours out His Spirit upon us. As we feed on Him in our hearts, by faith we rejoice in the gift of risen life.

08/19 PBY 17 Julia Watkins Statement of Faith

I believe in God, who is the paradoxical Three-in-One. God transcends human words and wisdom yet involves us in God’s very self through the dynamic relationship of the Trinity. The calling of faith is to respond with gratitude to the steadfast God, who desires relationship with all of humanity.

I believe that God is the source of all goodness. God made creation out of nothing, ordering it out of chaos that all creatures would participate in God’s goodness. From the tallest mountain to the tiniest sparrow, creation reflects God’s glory and is therefore worthy of reverence and awe. God issued a unique call among creation for humanity to share in and live out God’s love with regard to one another and the world. Still, we continue to assert authority over our own lives, turning away from and against God, neighbor, creation, and ourselves. The more we toil towards self-ascribed virtue, the deeper we fall into helpless despair. Yet, like a parent, God proved merciful and continues to pursue a relationship with us beloved children. God’s grace is a limitless gift that we cannot earn yet already possess. All are free to receive this grace with gratitude and to share it with trust in God’s unconditional welcome.

I believe in Jesus Christ, through whom God shared in the fullness of human life and initiated the freedom of the new life. Jesus is God face-to-face with those who hunger for food and thirst for righteousness. Rather than conforming to our superlatives of efficiency, achievement, and influence, Jesus lived and died in humble obedience. Jesus knew the fullness of the human experience—our joy as well as our suffering— and aligned himself on the cross with those who confront the depths of hell on earth. Rising from the tomb, Jesus conquered death so that all are now free to receive abundant life. Our self-giving Savior embodies love and emboldens us to participate in God’s present purposes for our enemies, as well as those we call friends. Because Christ has been born among us, we have glimpsed God’s promises. Because Christ is alive, we continue attending to the light in the darkness. Because Christ will come again, we hold fast to hope that all suffering will someday give way to unceasing joy.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, God’s constant, living presence, which dwells closer to us than our very breath. God sent the Spirit to give us rest and to wake us from our slumber, to guide us and sustain us in the faith, and to gather and renew us as the Church that we might reflect God’s grace.

I believe that Holy Scripture is the story of God’s redeeming love for the world. The Old and New Testaments point us to God’s self-revelation in Jesus Christ, even as they widen our perception of God’s mystery. God has involved faithful generations in the shaping of scripture, which continues to guide our individual and communal lives that we might grow in faith and abound in love.

I believe that the Church is a body of witnesses from all times and places, with Christ as its head. The Church is chosen by God, directed by Christ, and empowered by the Spirit to be the ambassador of God’s peace and reconciling love. Though we may distance ourselves from God, there is nothing that can separate us from God’s love. In response to that promise, the Church has the privilege of participating in the work of God’s kingdom, which is breaking into our midst, even as we continue to hope in its fullness beyond our scope of vision.

As a community, the Church regularly practices two sacraments: baptism and communion, which are visible signs of invisible grace. Through baptism, we are set free from the power of death to participate in the new life initiated through Jesus Christ, who welcomes us just as we are: one broken people made whole around the Lord’s table of grace. Both sacraments are given by Christ and consistent with the witness of God’s faithfulness to humankind throughout the Scriptures. These sacraments fill us with knowledge of God’s character, nourish us in community, and sustain us with hope to pursue the God, who first pursues us, in thought, word, and action.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

A. Administrative Commission to Dissolve Turner Presbyterian Church From time to time, it becomes necessary for a presbytery to dissolve a congregation. The power and responsibility of a presbytery to take such action is described in G-3.0301a. Such a request has come to the Presbytery of Charlotte from the Turner Presbyterian Church, 4802 Lancaster Highway, Monroe, NC 28112-9056, in a resolution adopted at a congregational meeting held on Sunday, June 23, 2019.

In accordance with the principles outlined in G-3.0109b, the Presbytery of Charlotte appoints the following persons to serve on an Administrative Commission to carry out the dissolution of the Turner Presbyterian Church in conformity with the Book of Order. (G-3.0109b)

08/19 PBY 27 08/19 PBY 28 Charles Blasdell Statement of Faith

I believe in the one Lord and God who expresses Himself in the Holy Trinity. God is the creator and sustainer of creation who makes us in His own image. Jesus Christ is God’s ultimate self expression incarnate in human form; fully God and fully man, a gift unto creation that we might know Him and be reconciled to Him through His sacrifice on the cross. The Holy Spirit is the expression of God’s transforming and unifying power who transforms our hearts and minds, guides us in God’s will, and unites our souls to God just as He unites God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

God reveals Himself to creation through the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible. The Bible is the infallible Word of God inspired by the Holy Spirit, given to humanity that we might know His will for our lives. The New Testament contains God’s special revelation of Himself in the person, teachings, and sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ.

The fallen nature of human selfishness, covetousness, and greed have separated us from the paradise of physical and spiritual communion with God. It is only through the reconciling sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit and not the efforts of human works that God reconciles us to Himself. To this end God established and ordained the Holy Sacraments of Baptism and The Lord’s Supper.

Baptism is a physical response to the indwelling and calling of the Holy Spirit, an outward act that confirms the Holy Spirit's transformation. Through the symbolism of the sprinkling of water, we acknowledge the gift of grace that washes away our sin and sanctifies us in the sight of God. And in the laying on of hands we enter the body of Christ that sustains and guides us on our walk with Christ.

Through the celebration of the Lord’s Supper, we present ourselves to God, and proclaim His gift of salvation to the world. Though the symbolism of the bread and cup, we bind our brokenness to Christ’s broken body and resurrection, and accept our role as disciples in the new covenant in His blood.

We are the body of Christ; the church. We come together as a community rooted in both the Scriptures and the tradition of the confessions while constantly seeking to reform ourselves in the image of God. Through Divine worship, Christian education and service, we proclaim the grace of God to the world, support one another in righteousness, and work together through the Holy Spirit toward the reconciliation of the world to God.

08/19 PBY 29 James Ewing Statement of Faith

I believe in the one true God, maker of heaven and earth.

This same God, who in accordance with scripture, before the start of time elected believers to share in the heavenly kingdom.

A covenant was set forth from God to creation and was violated by creation.

God, with infinite mercy and grace dispensed another covenant of grace in Christ Jesus.

Jesus Christ, God with us, was born of the Virgin Mary and became fully human. Free from sin and perfect in every way.

Jesus taught and counseled his creation. Demonstrating grace and the power to heal, Jesus ministered to his people, both Jew and Gentile.

On the night that Jesus was betrayed he instituted the sacrament of the Last Supper and instructed his followers to repeat this meal in remembrance of him.

God’s creation, still corrupted by sin, persecuted Christ Jesus and by the command of Pontius Pilate had him crucified. Upon his death, Jesus was buried in the tomb. He descended into Hell.

On the third day Jesus overcame death and rose to life, leaving the tomb empty. His ministry continued, converting doubters into believers.

Before ascending into Heaven, Christ commanded his disciples to go out into the world spreading the news of the gospel and baptizing in the name of the father.

Christ the redeemer sits in Heaven with God.

With his ascension Christ left the Holy Spirit to guide and encourage his creation. Through the work of the Holy Spirit the visible and invisible catholic church was created.

The Holy Spirit is ever present working through creation for the will of God.

08/19 PBY 30 John Magnuson Statement of Faith

God calls us and claims us before any acts of our own. Without God’s calling, we are lost in the midst of the many identities thrust upon us by the world. God’s claim on our lives gives us our true identity as God’s beloved. In our baptism we are assured of this identity and claimed as children of God. As we come to find our identity in the sacrament of baptism, we discover God’s identity through scripture and the life of Jesus.

We more fully know who God is through the life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ, and by the continued work of the Holy Spirit. In the life of Jesus, we come to know God living among us; fully human and fully God. In the death of Jesus we are confronted with our own sinfulness and are called to repentance. In Jesus’ resurrection we are assured of God’s love for us as Jesus defeated death, assuring us that our sin is forgiven once and for all. In Jesus’ ascension we claim that Christ reigns as King, and that Christ is for us.

Just as the Spirit moved over the waters of creation and at baptism, we are created by God and sealed as God’s own. We are continually worked upon by the Holy Spirit toward our sanctification. The Spirit also intercedes for us in prayer when we are out of words or thoughts. It is the presence of the Spirit which makes us present to Christ at the sacrament of the Lord’s Table and which nourishes us, encouraging us as we anticipate the present and coming Kingdom of God.

In all that we learn and know of Jesus, the Spirit, and the Father, we know of the one triune God. While the Father is often associated with creation, Jesus redemption, and the Spirit sanctification; as one acts all act. Our triune God is indivisible and is forever and always working as one. We learn many of God’s actions in the Bible. Not only do the passages in the Bible tell us about who God is, but the writing of the Bible tells us about God as well. The writing of the Bible tells us that God is interested in humanity, in history, and in particular people. God has inspired and led many men and women in the formation of our Holy Scriptures. These scriptures also reinterpret our world as we are called into mission. The mission we are called into is God’s daily mission of bringing about God’s kingdom. Through discernment and prayer, we daily enter into God’s mission as Christ is already active and present among us. Through simple acts and through grand acts we join with Father, Son, and Spirit in mission every day of our lives.

08/19 PBY 31 Peter Henry Statement of Faith

I trust in God who created all things, seen and unseen, including the earth, spinning at 1000 miles per hour, revolving around a sun whose slow-burning beacon is but one pinprick of light among 100 octillion stars on a cosmic canvas stretched over 100 billion light years. With so much of creation within the field of God’s sight, God nevertheless telescopes God’s vision to the third rock from our sun, casting an ever watchful, all-compassionate eye on the planet we call Earth, from which God coaxed life and bid it grow and change over 4.5 billion years. With all there is to see, the Lord sees us and has power great enough to hold it all together and love enough to continue its life.

I trust that the Cosmic Christ of the Scriptures is also our Lord and Savior, a shepherd to God’s sheep, and that in him God’s vision of us is not relegated to what can be seen from above, or from without, but that through Jesus God sees our lives firsthand, from within, as one of us.

I trust that the Spirit which hovered over the waters at creation is present in our often-chaotic world, still drawing forth life from death, and aligning our work so that the long, moral arc of the universe continues to bend toward justice.

I trust that Jesus really is the Head of the Church, which means I don’t have to be, and that I am free to work within my own limitations and in concert with other similarly limited people.

I trust that God’s grace is sufficiently strong enough that I can’t stop it, precious enough that I want to hold it, and life-giving enough that I want everyone to have it because it is not a possession or a secret to keep.

I trust that while the Church sometimes does a good job of getting in the way of God’s message of love, the Lord is not done with us yet; that despite some of the mistakes we have made, there is still a vital role for people of good will and faith to play.

I trust that when we make way for the majesty of God, live the poetry of Jesus and share the fruit of the Spirit, we show forth the reign of God.

I trust that the artists among us, inspired by the creativity of God, can rise up and bring back the heart of our faith to work with the head of our faith.

I trust that the humblest of our number, in following the model of Jesus, will kneel down and call us to service in the spirit of the Servant King.

I trust that the compassionate in our midst, moved by the Holy Spirit, will rise up and wash us with their tears and by the Spirit baptize the Church into its continued ministry of mercy and love.

I trust that Scripture is clear enough about God’s love, circumspect enough about religion, and ambivalent enough about my place in the equations of faith that I am compelled to humility, humor and hope.

I trust.

08/19 PBY 32 Robert L. Galloway Statement of Faith

I believe in the creator God almighty, God’s son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. I trust in the Trinity, the perfect community on which we can model our own community. God created the universe and loved us before the beginning of time. God is the loving sustainer. With God all things are possible and our joy and highest task is to praise him throughout all our life.

God’s greatest revelation to us was Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is coequal and coeternal to God. Jesus was born to human flesh, fully human and fully divine. It is through Jesus Christ that we are saved. We are saved by grace through faith. Our response is to follow Jesus and respond to his call. This is not equal to this gift, but in an effort of gratitude.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, who continues to call us to God. The Holy Spirit is ever present to us and reveals the Word to us through the Holy Scriptures. The Spirit equips the church to work and serve in this word by the proclamation of the Word, the administration of the sacraments, and our individual and communal discipleship. The Holy Spirit is truly seen by the manifestation of the fruits of the spirit - “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23). When we see these in the world we know that the Holy Spirit is among us.

I believe in God’s providence, that God has ordered all things for God’s own glory. God’s providence allows us to celebrate the love and justice of God, while sharing in the suffering and tragedy of the world. In the end, God’s providence provides hope and is a witness to God’s presence in everything.

I believe in the brokenness of the world and the brokenness of humanity. We are sinful creatures. Yet, in Jesus Christ we can be made whole and be healed. The Church is not a home for the perfected, but it more often resembles a hospital for sinners and the fractured. Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ we will not be judged by our sin, but by the grace of Jesus Christ and shall live eternally with God.

I believe in the church visible and invisible, the church we see and the church that is those who God’s calls beyond our walls. We are called to help our neighbor, no matter how far away that neighbor is. We are charged with the care of the world so that Christ’s light shines through it. We are all children of God and God is still revealing God’s self to us each day. We strive Christ in our hearts and respond to his command to “follow me.”

08/19 PBY 33 Presbytery of Charlotte Procedures for Nominating Commissioners to the 224th General Assembly June 20-27, 2020 in Baltimore, MD

When nominating commissioners to the General Assembly, the Presbytery of Charlotte Committee on Representation shall adhere to the guidelines expressed in the Book of Order (see G-3.0501). Effort will be made by the Committee on Representation to present to the Presbytery a slate of General Assembly Commissioners that will be as balanced as possible by geography, race, gender, age, theological perspective, and church size. When making difficult choices between applicants, the following factors may be considered: participation in and knowledge of the governing bodies of the PC(USA), length of time since a minister, elder, or congregation was last represented as a GA Commissioner, and passion for service as a GA Commissioner.

For the 224th General Assembly in 2020, The Presbytery of Charlotte will be allotted 4 Minister Commissioners and 4 Elder Commissioners, based on the membership from the 2018 Annual Statistical Report. The goal of the Committee on Representation will be to select 2 Commissioners (1 Minister and 1 Elder) from each of the four (4) COM Clusters of the Presbytery. Commissioners will be selected in ways that seek to balance the Presbytery’s delegation with respect to geography, race, gender, age, theological perspective, and church size.

Selection will be based on an application process. COM Clusters are encouraged to recruit elders or ministers from their Cluster to submit applications for being a General Assembly Commissioner. Applications should come directly to the Presbytery’s Committee on Representation. If the Committee on Representation deems that the applications received are insufficient to constitute a representative slate, they may contact potential candidates and invite them to submit an application. The Committee on Representation reserves the right to seek out potential Commissioners to attain a delegation.

Applications will be received through September 1st of any year prior to the General Assembly. Election will occur at the stated meeting of the Presbytery of Charlotte that falls prior to the 120- day deadline established by the Office of the General Assembly.

08/19 PBY 35 08/19 PBY 36 PROCEDURES FOR NOMINATING YOUNG ADULT ADVISORY DELEGATES (Y.A.A.Ds) TO THE 224th GENERAL ASSEMBLY June 20-27, 2020 in Baltimore, MD

The Office of the General Assembly affirms the value of the participation of young adult advisory delegates in the General Assembly. That participation is enhanced when care has been given to their selection and to their orientation to the General Assembly.

Young adult advisory delegates are not attending a youth conference. YAADs are full participants in the General Assembly meeting, with responsibility for becoming familiar with the business coming before it and taking part in the deliberations. They are seated with the presbytery commissioners in the plenary sessions, and are assigned to assembly committees. YAADs have voice in plenary sessions, and both voice AND vote in their committee.

The Stated Clerk assigns assembly assistants to serve as YAAD advisors; they provide guidance for the YAADs, but there is limited adult supervision. YAADs are housed in one of the assembly hotels, and generally share a room with another YAAD. YAADs should be self-motivated and responsible.

SELECTION CRITERIA: x In accordance with Standing Rule B.2.d.(1), the young adult advisory delegate “shall be between the ages of seventeen and twenty-three years on the date the General Assembly convenes.” x The potential young adult advisory delegate should be active in their local congregation and presbytery or campus ministry. x The young adult advisory delegate should be mature; the demands of the assembly require responsible decision-making, as well as being away from home for a week and managing their time and work with limited adult assistance. x Reference checks should be made with their pastor, campus minister or chaplain, or other local congregational leaders. x The potential young adult advisory delegate should be able to attend the full General Assembly meeting.

08/19 PBY 38 Your Ten-Cents-a-Meal Offering at Work: Highlighting Recipients of TCaM Grant

Cooperative Christian Ministry, also known as CCM, was founded on September 1, 1981 out of seven churches in the Concord area coming together to provide for those in need in their community. Today CCM has over 130 churches and 100 businesses that actively support their ministry. CCM is committed to its mission of providing immediate assistance to members of our community who are experiencing crisis in the areas of food, shelter, or finances while engaging them in a series of actions that will empower them to move beyond crisis.

Through partnerships with churches such as Harrisburg Presbyterian, whom CCM rents a house from for $1 a year, CCM is able to provide “Training Houses” where families that have faced homelessness are able to live on their own and develop the skills necessary to run and maintain a successful, independent household.

The 10-Cents-a-Meal grant covers some of the food that is provided to those in need in the community through CCM’s “My Father’s House” Ministry. The ministry provides short-term shelter and consistent nutrition to families that are experiencing crisis. Residents of “My Father’s House” eat and fellowship together nightly.

Thanks to the donations from congregations throughout the Presbytery of Charlotte, we are able to feed God’s sheep and spread the love of Christ throughout our communities. Thank you for your support of Ten-Cents-a-Meal!
