MONDAY 29th Gwenno @Gwennosaunders

Written entirely in Cornish, is exploration of the individual and collective subconscious, the myths and drolls of Cornwall, and the survival of Britain’s lesser known Brythonic language. As one of the language’s few fluent speakers, Gwenno felt a duty to make her second album entirely in Cornish: to create a document of a living language, explore her identity and the endless creative possibilities of a tongue that has a very small surviving artistic output, despite having been around for at least 15 centuries.

She dove deep into research, learning about attempts to protect and progress the language and the role of women throughout Cornish history. When Gwenno considered the legends of sunken Brythonic cities Cantre’r Gwaelod, Kêr-Is, Langarrow and Lyonesse, she knew she had her starting point. These cities evoked her idea of language as its own form of psychological territory, a concept perfectly distilled by the Cornish title for the album, Le Kov – the place of memory.

Over the course of making Le Kov, Gwenno reconciled her anxiety over her right to make a Cornish-language pop record, and realised that, in the age of Brexit, isolationism and hostility towards the rich cultures that make modern Britain, it had a wider resonance, too. “This album is a combination of accepting the culture which your parents have valued enough to want to pass on to you, regardless how small, and utilising it in a positive way to try and make sense of the world around you, it’s also about having to accept and respect the nuances that make us all different and discovering that all of our stories share the same truth.”

Rosehip Teahouse @rosehipteahouse Cardiff four-piece Rosehip Teahouse (Faye, Tony, Kristy & Will), will capture your heart and set it free. The band’s music emanates and fluctuates, between feelings of sadness and happiness, with a hint of sparkle thrown in. Formed originally by Faye Rogers (Guitar & Vocals) back in 2015, playing only a small number of house shows and DIY gigs, Faye crafted these subtle and delicate songs, which command your attention, from start to finish. Recorded DIY style, using any means possible, Faye was later joined by friend Will Dickins (Drums), who heard these tracks, and was in awed immediately. The two began to create music to soothe the soul, and since the early Bandcamp singles, have formed a densely layered, full band with Tony Williams (Guitar) and Kristy Cromwell (Bass), playing several intimate shows in and around Cardiff. Their first single as a full band, 'Same Sky’ is a track that sits quietly between the coexisting realms of happy and sad, with gorgeous, heartbreaking vocal harmonies, swirling, twinkly guitars, while been driven by a head- bobbing bass line. Leading you though a journey. One of intricacy, complexity, and all with beautifully subtle tones. All neatly woven together, to build a tender, tear jerking atmosphere.

Papur Wal Papur Wal are a four-piece slacker/art rock outfit originally from North and West Wales based in Cardiff. The band started off influenced by the 90s American Indie. Pretty but ugly Alt/Indie Rock with lethargic vocals and harmonies infused with chorusy tones of alternately tuned guitars wandering melodic bass-lines and innovative drum beats. After recording the first EP, Papur Wal became 3 and focussed on songwriting structures and recording.

Charlotte Church DPD 'S LATE NIGHT POP DUNGEON

Down the dark, dark stairs, upon the bloody gallows of soft rock, through the oubliette of cheese, into the torture chamber of disco, you are welcomed to the Late Night Pop Dungeon.

The Grand High Executionatrix, dungeon mistress Charlotte Church, will give her MK Ultra treatment to the greatest tunes that time forgot, and some that will forever haunt our collective memory. Bring dancing shoes - the floor is on fire.

Charlotte Church (1912-3045) is regularly called a hippy, an accusation she vehemently rejects (despite being regularly spotted crocheting her own yoghurt in "those" coffee shops and buying veg boxes from local farms in flares and a Mexican baja). Nobody has managed to convict her of an actual crime as of yet. This is puzzling to the readers of teen megazoins in which she has listed "bank heists" as a hobby since the floods of '98. She abhors whimsy of any kind and nurtures a glory of unicorns in the battlements of her higgledy-piggledy palace made from the toenails of toothfaeries. Yay!
