6 September 2019 Dear Colleague, As the schools go back and students are gearing up for university life the UHB has been as busy as ever. To those of you who have enjoyed a summer break - welcome back. The summer period did not result in the usual dip in numbers with as many patients presenting at EU remaining as during some of our busiest winter months and this has in some areas placed some pressures on us, which is a picture replicated across the whole of Wales. Politically the activity on the run-up to Brexit has increased including a lot more interest in the health service and how we would cope with a shortage of medicines, reduced access to medical equipment and, vitally important, our staffing levels. I’m pleased to say that all of the indications for us are that there is no exodus of EU staff as a result of Brexit and the surveys completed by workforce colleagues are demonstrating that people are providing us with their nationality details so that we can engage with them on obtaining Settled Status in the UK post-Brexit. We have continued the forward planning and contingency work to ensure that we are as prepared as we possibly can be to mitigate any kind of shortages. So, while we are not complacent - none of us can be specific on what a no deal Brexit will mean for health care or health services we provide for our patients - our priority is that staff nor patients are affected adversely by any of the scenarios deal or no deal and that we will remain an open and inclusive NHS service and employer to all.

  • St. John's Episcopal Church
St. John’s Episcopal Church – Islip’s Mother of Churches Second Updated Edition, Updated Edition, Copyright, 2018 Forward Three hundred and thirty-five years ago 26-year-old William Nicoll met with “Winnaquaheagh, Sachem of Connettquot” and purchased the first parcel of land in what would be Islip Town and names it “Islip Grange.” He would build a home on that land in 1701 and had church services celebrated for his family, tenants and servants in that home. His grandson, the third proprietor, also named William, 82 years later would have a chapel built on the approximate center of the Nicoll holdings. That small brown wood-shingled church on the northside of Montauk Highway in Oakdale is still a place of worship, today is often overlooked by those who rush by, but that building has been a silent witness to the growth of the Town of Islip. In its churchyard rest members of the families that built the Town. It is also a reminder and remainder of the colonial era estates, and the impact of the Nicoll and Ludlow families on the early history of the Town. For over two hundred years that family would care not only for the church but also for their beloved Islip. The story of this church and those who loved her is also the story of the Town of Islip. This second edition is very much a work in progress as more and more details are discovered every day. This is not a polished and finished work as it is hoped that this will spur interest by those who read it to know more about this survivor and the impact it had on local, state and national history.

Were it to begin with a quotation from Holy Writ, it would be: "Other men labored and ye are entered into their labors." In a sketch published in 1899 in the North Carolina Baptist Historical Papers, Dr. T. J. Taylor, who lived in Charlotte prior to 1870, and who now lives in Warrenton, N. C, says: "There is no account of any Baptist residing in the neighborhood of Charlotte until toward the close of the eighteenth century. This absence of record does not necessarily prove that there were no Baptists among the early settlers; for, in the midst of a strongly Presbyterian population, and with no church organization, a few isolated Baptists would have no opportunity of putting themselves on record as such." Dr. T. H. Pritchard wrote, in 1896 "The first Baptist known in Mecklenburg County was John Dinkins, the great-grandfather of Rev. Dr. Thomas H. Pritchard. He was an Irishman, and a man of means, and resided on the Nation Ford Road, half a mile beyond the Mineral Spring, on Sugar Creek.

  • Performing Borders
Radical Musicology Volume 1 (2006) ISSN 1751-7788 Beyond Borders: The Female Welsh Pop Voice Sarah Hill University of Southampton For all its reputation as a musical culture, the number of women pop stars to 1 have emerged from Wales can be counted charitably on two hands, with some fingers to spare. Wales is a small country, host to two rich linguistic cultures, each with its own musical heritage and traditions, yet very few musicians of either gender have crossed over from one tradition to the other. The rarity of a female singer making such a border crossing is marked, allowing for a delicate lineage to be traced across the decades, from the 1960s to the present, revealing certain commonalities of experience, acceptance, and reversion. With this in mind, I would like to draw a linguistic and cultural connection between two determinedly different Welsh women singers. In the 1960s, when women’s voices were the mainstays of Motown, the folk circuit and the Haight-Ashbury, in Wales only Mary Hopkin managed to shift from Welsh-language to Anglo-American pop; thirty years later, Cerys Matthews made the same journey. These two women bear certain similarities: they both come from South Wales, they are both singers whose first, or preferred, language is Welsh, and they both found their niche in the Anglo-American mainstream market. These two women faced the larger cultural problems of linguistic and musical border-crossings, but more importantly, they challenged the place of the female pop voice in Wales, and of the female Welsh pop voice in Anglo-America.

Our proactive approach included research projects and initiatives exploring the role film can play in tackling poverty, unemployment, and the lack of gender, racial and socio-economic diversity still prevalent in today’s creative industries. What we’ve learned will continue to inform our future work, and how we can best serve the people and culture of Wales. INSPIRING LEARNING Inspiring learning from an early stage is vital, and Ffilm Cymru Wales awarded circa £55,000 on film education projects, leveraging third party funds. Projects focused on young and old, including those not in education, employment or training, and those with special education needs. From tackling homophobia in the schoolyard, to building confidence and inspiring the next generation of filmmakers, our education support has provided new insights and opportunities for all.
