(Other minor plans included) The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Würger (Shrike) was a German Second World War single-seat, single-engine fighter aircraft designed by Kurt Tank in the late 1930s. Powered by a radial engine, the 190 had ample power and was able to lift larger loads than its well-known counterpart, the Messerschmitt Bf 109. The 190 was used by the Luftwaffe in a wide variety of roles, including day fighter, fighter-bomber, ground-attack aircraft and, to a lesser degree, night fighter. When the Fw 190 started flying operationally over France in August 1941, it quickly proved itself to be superior in all but turn radius to the Royal Air Force's main front-line fighter, the Spitfire Mk. V.[1] The 190 wrested air superiority away from the RAF until the introduction of the vastly improved Spitfire Mk. IX in July 1942 restored qualitative parity.[2] The Fw 190 made its air combat debut on the Eastern Front in November/December 1942; though Soviet pilots considered the Bf 109 the greater threat, the Fw 190 made a significant impact. The fighter and its pilots proved just as capable as the Bf 109 in aerial combat, and in the opinion of German pilots who flew both, provided increased firepower and manoeuvrability at low to medium altitude. The Fw 190 became the backbone of the Jagdwaffe (Fighter Force), along with the Bf 109. On the Eastern Front, the Fw 190 was versatile enough to use in Schlachtgeschwader (Battle Wings or Strike Wings), specialised ground attack units which achieved much success against Soviet ground forces.

A fighter aircraft is a military aircraft designed primarily for attacking other aircraft, as opposed to a bomber, which is designed to attack ground targets, primarily by dropping bombs. Fighters are comparatively small, fast, and maneuverable. Fighter aircraft are the primary means by which armed forces gain air superiority. At least since World War II, air superiority has been a crucial component of victory in most modern warfare, particularly "conventional" warfare between regular armies, and their acquisition and maintenance represent a very substantial proportion of military budgets in militaries that maintain modern fighter forces. Introduction The word “fighter” did not become the official British term for a single seat fighter until after the First World War. In the RFC/RAF such aircraft continued to be called “scouts”. The French and Germans both used (and still use) terms that literally mean “hunter”. The Americans, perhaps originally due to a mistranslation of the French word “chasseur” called their fighters “pursuit” aircraft until after the Second World War. By whatever name they are known, fighters were developed in response to the fledgling use of aircraft and dirigibles in World War I for reconnaissance and ground attack roles. As aerial warfare became increasingly important, so did control of the airspace. By World War II, fighters were predominantly all-metal monoplanes with wing-mounted or propeller-mounted cannons.

Technisch preschte die He 100 in den Jahren 1937/38 weit nach vorn. Doch wie seiner Vorgängerin He 112 blieb auch diesem Hochgeschwindigkeits- Jagdeinsitzer der wirtschaftliche Erfolg versagt. Mit ihren Geschwindigkeitsweltrekorden eroberte sich die He 100 dennoch einen festen Platz in der Luftfahrtgeschichte. Entstehungsgeschichte Das Ausscheiden der He 112 im Wettbewerb um den Standard-Jäger der Luftwaffe (siehe Bericht über die He 112 in der ADL-Homepage) traf Ernst Heinkel hart. Es kratzte nicht nur an der Firmenehre, sondern auch an dem Selbstverständnis des besonders auf den Begriff „Heinkel-Tempo" stolzen Firmenchefs. Deshalb erarbeitete man bei Heinkel bereits ab Janu- ar 1936 das Projekt P 1035 eines Super V.J. (Verfolgungsjäger) mit DB 601 und Oberflächenkühlung. Die Firmenleitung wusste, dass im Technischen Amt des Reichsluftfahrtministeriums (RLM) an ein solches Flugzeug gedacht wurde, das al- lerdings als zweimotoriger Entwurf (die spätere Fw 187) bereits bei Focke-Wulf bearbeitet wurde. Ohne Wissen des RLM baute Heinkel eine Attrappe des neuen, zunächst auf 650 km/h Höchstgeschwindigkeit projektier- ten Jägers, der neben zwei Maschinengewehren auch eine 20-mm-Oerlikon-Kanone tragen sollte. Die Reduzierung schädli- chen Widerstandes stand bei der aerodynamischen Auslegung ganz oben. Einer der Kernpunkte dabei war der Verzicht auf herkömmliche Kühler und ihr Ersatz durch eine moderne Oberflächenkühlung.
