IOM MOSCOW TO LAUNCH COUNTER TRAFFICKING PROJECT IN RUSSIA

On December 26, 2005 IOM Moscow signed an Agreement with the Delegation of the European Commission to Russia, which contracted IOM Moscow to implement a Project titled Prevention of Human Trafficking in Russia. The Project, which is scheduled to begin as of March 1, 2006, will continue for 30 months and will involve three groups of interventions to address the main gaps in combating trafficking from, into and through the Russian Federation. Russia is considered as a high-risk country, given its size, geographical location bordering with a number of high-risk countries and presence of already confirmed cases of avian flu among birds. Taking into account WHO recommendations, the UN Country Team (UNCT) procured a basic stockpile allowing for a 5-day course of Tamiflu treatment for 30% of all their staff and their dependants. In addition, the UNCT is planning to procure enough Tamiflu to cover prophylaxis needs of the ‘essential staff’ identified by each agency.
