Dear friends,

First I’d like to say a big thank you for the 52 (yes…. 52) shoe boxes our churches and schools prepared for the Christmas Child initiative. Now that’s something worth cele- brating!

Last night I was in Durham Cathedral during the Lumiere Light Festival facilitating the lighting of candles and praying with visitors….and there were hundreds who visited the area I and 6 others stewarded. As I was only there from 4.30 to 8pm goodness knows how many poured in through the doors over the duration of 4 nights! Folks came from far and wide. One family told me they had travelled from Wakefield for the event. I met some lovely people including, The Rt Rev Dr Helen-Ann Hartley who was the first woman bishop for New Zealand and will become our Bishop of Ripon next year.

As I wandered the cathedral for a brief look around, I thought about Advent as a time of waiting. Lumiere is a festival of light but it seemed to me what people really enjoyed was being in the dark! Whether they were wandering the streets or huddled near one of the light installations there was a sense of excitement and just a little drop of fear as we couldn’t really see each other very well at all and yet, there was a sense of being united in our shared fascination with light.

What will Advent bring for you? A time of waiting, preparing and clearing out anything we need to leave behind in readiness for welcoming Christ into our lives afresh and with a re- newed deliberate commitment to follow his ways celebrated at Christmas and into the future.

To help the children understand all these things we encourage them in our Church in School and the 3at4 Family services to mix a Christmas Cake, telling how firstly we clear out all the old ingredients from our cupboards and clean them, getting right into the cor- ners to rid them of any old rubbish and dirt, after which we have to prepare (mix the cake) then wait (to watch the cake bake and mature), then once we’ve done all the prepa- ration we need, then we can celebrate when we cut the cake on Christmas day.

Let me commend to you the variety of styles of services prepared for you over these com- ing weeks. Let me encourage you to contribute to our food collections for the foodbank and Christ- mas presents for the Sea Farers who dock into Hartlepool port. Let’s consider our neigh- bours this Christmas time and be generous.

Please note Midnight Mass is at Hart this year and it begins at 11.30pm.

Have a joyful Christmas and a happy new Year ~ Revd. Janet Regular Church Services

Members and guests, Caroline Armstrong, Victoria Harrison and Annette Bannister, to the Annual Meeting and 87th Birthday. The business included final arrangements for the Christmas Lunch and the Christmas Workshop to be held on Thursday 7th December beginning at 1.30pm.

The usual business concluded, we moved on to the Annual Meeting. Copies of the Annual Ac- counts were circulated before Val Hazlewood gave the Treasurer’s report. Sylvia Jobson read the Secretary’s report and in her President’s report thanked everyone for the support she had received. The president and current committee members agreed to serve another year. Kath Rutter was presented with the Rose bowl as winner of the monthly competitions.

We then handed over to Victoria , who had brought along her “Boom Whackers”, plastic tubes of various lengths and colours which when hit against any part of the body or a solid object produced musical notes. Under Victoria’s guidance we managed a recognisable “Happy Birthday”.

The home-made Christmas Tree Decoration was won by Maureen Booth, Audrey Ainsley was sec- ond and Linda Finer third. Joan Bradley won the raffle.

Next meeting is our Christmas Night when we will have musical entertainment by Henry and Gra- ham. The competition is a Home-made Christmas Party Hat.

The first meeting of the new year will be held on Monday 8th January at 7.00pm.

ELWICK LADIES FELLOWSHIP Our November meeting was held at the home of Sylvia Jobson. Twelve ladies attended.

We welcomed our guest speakers, Gwyneth and Jackie from a local Baptist church in the area. They hold us how they became involved with the collecting , sorting and finally delivering 40 tons of toys, clothing, blankets etc. to distribute to some of the destitute families in Romania.

We watched at DVD of some of the children receiving their shoe boxes which children from local schools had filled with small gifts. The Romanian children were thrilled with even the smallest of toys.

The families living in the mountainous area of Romania where the temperature is –200F in winter, are extremely poor, often all the family living in one room and sharing it with the chickens!

Money, given by a local church group from this country, was also dis- tributed to the poor families to buy basic food, medicines and electricity.

Watching the DVD and hearing about these poor people made us all think how luckyt we are to live in our country. Thank you Sylvia for your hospitality.

Next meeting is at 4 Hillcrest Grove on Monday 11th December at 2.00pm.

NEWS FROM DALTON PIERCY PARISH COUNCIL - NOVEMBER

Broadband: BT promised a service which we paid for in vouchers and they have reneged on this. They didn’t return the vouchers and ignored numerous calls from the Clerk, Cllrs. Timothy and Burroughs. Very apologetic, they are saying that a more detailed modelling increased the original quote of £26,000 to £40.000 (didn’t inform us of this until now). Claiming they were aware that Digital Durham (gov. funded, therefore free) programme would fully cover Dalton Piercy and they did not use our vouchers as a protection, as this would preclude us from the free Digital Durham programme. BT stating “not contracted and is not guaranteed, however is a potential solution for the community”- “reassure you that I am looking into all possible options” – will maintain contact with you – rest assured that I am es- calating this at a high level” DPPC have asked for further clarification as putting a Dalton postcode into digi- [email protected] states no current plans to make fibre broadband available. BT have been awarded the contract for this gov. funded scheme to work in partnership with Durham Council.

Sewage smell: Cllr Burroughs has finally had some success by persistently pestering Northumbrian Wa- ter re the smell in houses and in the village. NW has repeatedly taken samples this month for analysis from the manhole where Sambuca’s outlet runs into the village drain. On each occasion they observed thick black effluent being discharged into the main drain plus a sulphide smell. They now have a dedi- cated team collating lab test results and a specialist’s report is being prepared. The Clerk has also sent the details to Tony Hanson, HBC assistant director of Environmental Services who is meeting up with NW to discuss the possible mismanagement of a third party discharging into NW’s sewage system.

Village Hall Ownership: Cllr Rezai is still pursuing a possible resolution of this issue with HBC. The Red Gap Wind Farm Community Fund have said we could apply for funding for a new Village Hall if it could become viable by generating an income. This should not be a problem as we regularly get requests e.g. fitness classes, events etc. which we have to decline due to the state of the Hall.

Carols around the Tree : Please come along and get into the Christmas spirit. Carols around the Xmas Tree will be on Christmas Eve at 4.00pm. followed in the Village Hall with mulled wine, mince pies and a chance to catch up with neighbours. HBC are responsible for providing the tree and switching on the lights. We’ve asked that they decorate it with a better set of Xmas tree lights than last year!

Companionship and fitness without the commitment Of owning a dog of your one Please call: 01429 860846 or visit our website www.barkingmad.uk.com Hart's School/Village Field!

The Parish Council is very concerned to hear that some people are using the field to exer- cise their dogs. Dogs, (as well as horses and motor vehicles), are prohibited. This area is supposed to be safe for children!

There is good reason for the ban: dog waste is known to be an environmental pollutant. In the USA it is deemed to be a non-point source pollutant, in the same category as herbi- cides and insecticides, oil, grease and toxic chemicals!

A single gram of dog waste can contain 23 million faecal coliform bacteria, which are known to cause cramps, diarrhoea, intestinal illness and serious kidney disorders in hu- mans. Dog waste can contain the eggs of hookworms, ringworms and tapeworms as well as other parasites and can cause serious infections, including salmonella; they can live in the soil for years and also be carried into waterways, putting everyone at risk.

Children are the most vulnerable because they play on the grass, dig in the soil, and often put their hands to their mouths or eyes. So,

PLEASE NOTE The school/village playing field is out-of-bounds to ALL DOGS!

PLEASE, always clean up after your dog, for everyone’s sake, including your own!

What a to do! Both Hart and Elwick Parish Councils have made a formal complaint to the Borough Council about the way our objections to the Gas-Powered Electricity sub-station on Worsett Lane were dealt with at the Planning Committee. Our complaint, about the procedure, not the actual application, is now the subject of a formal investigation. Other matters of concern raise their heads on a regular basis without residents taking much notice it seems! Some irresponsible dog owners are still not cleaning up after their pets, with dog waste a menace, particularly for children. Of particular concern recently have been the path along the back of Mill View (now called by some villagers ‘Dog Shit Alley’). and the school playing field – the latter is prohibited to ALL dogs, horses and motor vehicles, and yet still some villagers are exercising their dogs where they know that children play. Fly tipping continues to be a problem, although the Borough Council has issued over 400 penalty notices this year already. Perhaps the penalty need to be much tougher, costing the perpetrators far more than it would to take their rubbish to the tip? It actual- ly costs nothing for most household waste at the tip; some items do incur a charge, but all ratepayers should not have to bear the cost of the disposal of, for example a refriger- ator or freezer (which contain toxic chemicals), or asbestos, and which costs the Bor- ough Council extra money to dispose of in an environmentally safe way. Potholes and overgrown hedges which block pavements, thus forcing pedestrians into the road, are another recurring problem. If only the Borough Council would deal with these as soon as they were identified, they would save money, as leaving them until they get bigger costs more, both directly and indirectly (insurance claims against the Council). Vehicles speeding through the village and/or parking where it causes problems for oth- er drivers or pedestrians, may hopefully soon be much less an issue. The Parish Council has strongly supported a proposal by Mrs Heaton, Head of the school, for a pedestrian- controlled crossing to be placed in Front Street near the Raby Arms. Mrs Heaton hopes that this will allow the school to start a ‘walking bus’, from the Raby Arms car park to the school; parents from outside the village will not have to drive right up to the school, thus reducing the parking problems in Magdalene Drive and decreasing the flow of speeding traffic through the village. Of course, children who live in the village itself ALL walk to school, don’t they? Minna West Clerk to Hart Parish Council
