BUS SERVICE CHANGES IN , , DURHAM, , STOCKTON, , NEWCASTLE AND From Sunday 28 October 2012

Service Route Changes

1/1B Darlington - Bishop Auckland - Buses will continue to run half-hourly on Monday to Saturday daytimes between Darlington, Cockerton, Heighington, Crook - , Bishop Auckland, Crook and Low Mown Meadows, continuing hourly to Tow Law. The Sunday service is unchanged, but there will be a new Monday to Saturday evening timetable that will see buses run hourly between Darlington and Crook. The times of the evening and Sunday buses will be co-ordinated with the 5A to provide a bus about every 30 minutes between Darlington and Bishop Auckland. Following customers’ requests, a new Monday to Friday morning journey will run between Faverdale and Darlington arriving in the town centre for 0600.

2/2A/2B/2C Bishop Auckland - - This service is being withdrawn due to changes in the contract with . Customers who travel on - Bishop Auckland the Monday to Saturday morning journeys can use services 6, 7, 8/8A or 56 to complete their journeys. The Monday to Saturday evening journeys will be run by Scarlet Band (as service 35A) and more information about these is available from Durham County Council.

5/5A/5B Bishop Auckland - Shildon - Buses will continue to run half-hourly on Monday to Saturday daytimes along the existing route, except that all - Darlington journeys will serve Aycliffe Industrial Estate instead of Aycliffe Village, which will be covered by the 8 and 21 (see below). Evening buses will continue to run hourly, but to a new timetable to improve reliablity. Sundays will also see a new timetable and buses will run via Henknowle Estate to provide new links for this area. The Monday to Friday morning 5B journey will be diverted to start from Bishop Auckland and will run as service 5A. A new journey will run on service 6 from , which will connect with the 5A in Bishop Auckland.

6/6A Durham - Spennymoor - This service is being enhanced to run every 12 minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes between Durham and Bishop Auckland - West Auckland - West Auckland, hourly in the evening and on Sundays. All buses will run as service 6 via Tudhoe, Spennymoor, Evenwood - Ramshaw/Cockfield Middlestone Moor, Bishop Auckland, Cabin Gate and Woodhouse Close, with two journeys per hour extending beyond West Auckland to Evenwood and Cockfield. The 6 will not serve Melrose Drive in St Helen Auckland, Evenwood Gate or Ramshaw. Arriva will no longer serve Melrose Drive or Evenwood Gate - Ramshaw will be covered by new service 50 (see below). A new early morning journey will run from West Auckland arriving in Bishop Auckland at 0546 and Durham at 0623.

7/7A Darlington - Harrowgate Hill - his service will continue to run every 15 minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes between Darlington and Newton Aycliffe - Chilton - Durham via Harrowgate Hill, Newton Aycliffe, Chilton and Ferryhill. However, all buses will run as service 7 via Ferryhill - Durham Burnhill Way, Agnew Way and Woodham Way rather than Central Avenue in Newton Aycliffe. Central Avenue will still have a half-hourly service, but this will be provided by the new 8 and 21 (see below). The 7 will also no longer serve the Arnison Centre and Brasside. Alternative journeys will be available on the new 42 and 64. Evening buses will run hourly between Darlington and Durham, co-ordinated with the 5A between Darlington and Newton Aycliffe to offer a half-hourly service along this section of route. Sunday buses will also run hourly, co-ordinated with the 5A, 8 and 21 to offer a 15-20 minute service between Darlington and Newton Aycliffe.

8/8A Darlington - Newton Aycliffe - The 8/8A will run to new routes and timetables. The 8 will run hourly on Monday to Saturday daytimes Chilton - Ferryhill Station - between Darlington and Spennymoor via Harrowgate Hill, Aycliffe Village, Newton Aycliffe, Chilton, Ferryhill Ferryhill - Spennymoor Station, Ferryhill, Kirk Merrington and Middlestone Moor. Buses will follow the current 8A route between Newton Aycliffe and Rushyford, which is via Central Avenue and the A167 rather than Pease Way, Greenfield Way, Williamfield Way and Woodham Village. This will speed up journeys for people travelling between Darlington, Newton Aycliffe, Ferryhill and Spennymoor. A new hourly Sunday service will run on the 8, re-instating a regular Sunday bus service for many places. The 8A will run hourly on Monday to Saturday daytimes between Ferryhill and Spennymoor via Thinford, Hill Estate and Tudhoe. Together, the 8 and 8A will offer two buses per hour between Ferryhill and Spennymoor on Monday to Saturday daytimes.

12/12A Hurworth - Darlington - This service will run to a revised route in . The 12 is unchanged, but the 12A will perform Middleton St George - an anti-clockwise loop via Middleton St George and Middleton One Row. The Sunday route is being simplified Trees Park to reflect the normal Monday to Saturday route.

21/21A - Shotton Colliery - The 21/21A will continue to provide a half-hourly Monday to Saturday daytime service between Peterlee, The Trimdons - - Shotton Colliery, the Trimdons, Fishburn and (hourly on Sundays), but all buses will run via Sedgefield - Wingate rather than . The 21A will no longer serve Grampian Drive in Peterlee and both the Darlington/Middlesbrough 21 and 21A will run via Front Street, Church Road and Wynyard Road in Village. Customers who currently travel on the 21 between Peterlee and Wheatley Hill can use the new 22. Arriva will no longer serve Grampian Drive in Peterlee - alternative frequent services (the 22 and 24) will be available on Passfield Way and Pennine Drive. The 21 will extend from Sedgefield to Darlington, with buses running hourly via Newton Aycliffe, Aycliffe Village and Harrowgate Hill. The 21A will extend from Sedgefield to Middlesbrough, with buses also running hourly via Thorpe Thewles, North Tees Hospital and Stockton. Buses will then follow a revised route between Stockton and Middlesbrough, which will be via Thornaby railway station, University (Harvard Avenue, Station Street and Princeton Drive) and the A66..

22 Durham - Thornley - Wheatley Hill - This service is being enhanced to run half-hourly on Monday to Saturday daytimes, hourly in the evening and Hartlepool on Sundays. Buses will follow the current route between Durham, Thornley and Wheatley Hill, but will then run via Shotton Colliery, Peterlee, Horden and Blackhall to Hartlepool. Monday to Saturday journeys will run via King Oswy Drive in Hartlepool while Sunday buses will run via the General Hospital. All journeys will serve Victoria Road in Hartlepool town centre, but start/finish at the Marina instead of the Transport Interchange. Together, the 22 and 23 will offer a bus every 15 minutes between Peterlee and Hartlepool, while the 22 and 24 will provide a bus every 15 minutes between Peterlee and Durham.

23 Hartlepool - Peterlee - Sunderland This service is being enhanced to run half-hourly on Monday to Saturday daytimes between Hartlepool and Sunderland. All journeys will start/finish at Hartlepool Marina then run via Hartlepool town centre, the General Hospital, Blackhall, Horden, Peterlee, , Easington Village, New and Ryhope to Sunderland. The 23 will not serve Horden Colliery or Dalton Park. Horden Colliery will no longer be served by Arriva; Dalton Park will be covered by the 24. Together, the 22 and 23 will offer a bus every 15 minutes between Peterlee and Hartlepool, while the 23 and 24 will provide a bus every 15 minutes between Peterlee and Sunderland.

24/24A/ Durham - Sherburn - This service is being simplified to offer a half-hourly Monday to Saturday dayime service (hourly in the evening 24B/24X Shotton Colliery - Peterlee - and on Sundays) between Durham, Peterlee and Sunderland. All buses will run as service 24 via Sherburn Sunderland Village, , Ludworth, Haswell, Shotton Colliery, Peterlee, Easington Village, Dalton Park, New Seaham and Ryhope. Evening and Sunday buses will also serve Easington Colliery because the 23 does not run at these times. Together the 24 and 22 will offer a bus every 15 minutes between Durham and Peterlee, while the 24 and 23 will provide a bus every 15 minutes between Peterlee and Sunderland. Additional service 24X journeys will run at peak times between Durham and Peterlee, offering quicker connections for commuters and a direct link to .

31/31A Peterlee - Easington Village - This service is being withdrawn, but all sections of the route will be replaced by the new 23 and 24. New Seaham - Ryhope - Sunderland

33 Ferryhill - Sedgefield - Fishburn - This service is being withdrawn due to changes in the contract with Durham County Council. Customers The Trimdons - Hartlepool travelling between Hartlepool town centre, Hartlepool General Hospital, Deaf Hill, , and Trimdon Village will be able to use the new 57A. Customers travelling between Deaf Hill, The Trimdons, Fishburn and Sedgefield can use the 21/21A. Please contact Durham County Council for information about the replacement service between Ferryhill and Sedgefield.

35/36 Bishop Auckland - Coundon - This service is being withdrawn, but most sections of the route will have alternative buses. The new 56 will run Kirk Merrington - Ferryhill - half-hourly on Monday to Saturday daytimes between Ferryhill, Kirk Merrington, Coundon and Bishop Chilton - Bishop Auckland Auckland, while customers travelling between Ferryhill, Ferryhill Station and Chilton can use the 7, 8 or 56. Unfortunately there will be no direct service between Chilton and Bishop Auckland and customers should change buses in Ferryhill.

NEW 42 Durham - Arnison Centre - Brasside This new service will run hourly every 45-60 minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes between Durham, the Arnison Centre and Brasside. It will replace the 7/7A, which will no longer run to the Arnison Centre or Brasside.

43 Durham - Broompark - This service is being enhanced to run every 15 minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes, hourly in the evening Ushaw Moor - Esh Winning and on Sundays. We are also introducing some double-deck buses to the route, which will offer much-needed extra capacity at peak times.

NEW 46 Durham - Langley Moor - This new service will run every 20 minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes between Durham, Langley Moor, Willington - Crook - Stanhope Willington and Crook offering quicker journeys than the current 49A. Buses will run hourly in the evening and on Sundays. At Monday to Friday peak times, one journey each way will extend to/from Stanhope via Tow Law, and Frosterley.

48 Durham - - This service will continue to run every 20 minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes (hourly in the evenings New and on Sundays) between Durham, Bearpark and New Brancepeth. Some timetable changes are being made to improve reliability and bigger buses will be used during the daytime to ensure there are enough seats for everyone. Early evening and Sunday buses will no longer run between New Brancepeth and Brandon. Some late evening journeys will be run by Classic due to changes in the contract with Durham County Council.

49/49A Durham - Langley Moor - Brandon - The 49/49A will provide a great ten-minute service on Monday to Saturday daytimes (half-hourly in the Sawmills Estate/Crook evening and on Sundays) between Durham, Langley Moor, Brandon and Sawmills Estate. Service 49 journeys will run from Durham to Sawmills Estate via Langley Moor, Meadowfield and Lowland Road, returning via Sawmill Lane, High Shaws Estate, Brandon Lane and Langley Moor. Service 49A journeys will run from Durham to Sawmills Estate via Langley Moor, Brandon Lane, High Shaws Estate and Sawmill Lane, returning via Lowland Road, Meadowfield and Langley Moor.

50/50A Durham - Brandon - Willington - This service will run hourly on Monday to Saturday daytimes between Durham, Langley Moor, Brandon, Bishop Auckland Willington and Bishop Auckland. Buses will then continue to Evenwood via the Technical College, Dene, Escomb, Witton Park, High Etherley, Toft Hill and Ramshaw. Buses will run via the A690 between Langley Moor and Brancepeth, omitting Brandon Lane, High Shaws, Commercial Street, Sawmills Lane and Scripton Gill Road in Brandon. Customers on Brandon Lane, High Shaws, Commercial Street and Sawmills Lane can use the 49/49A to travel to/from Durham, while Scarlet Band service 47 will run via Scripton Gill Road. More information about the 47 is available from Durham County Council. The 50/50A will replace the 6A between Evenwood and Ramshaw as well as the 86, 86A and 86B between Bishop Auckland and Toft Hill.

56/56A Durham - - Bowburn - This service is being revised and will run half-hourly on Monday to Saturday daytimes between Durham and - Ferryhill Station - Bishop Auckland via Shincliffe, Bowburn, Coxhoe, West , Ferryhill Station, Wood Lane Estate, Ferryhill - Spennymoor Ferryhill, Kirk Merrington and Coundon. It will replace the 35/36 between Ferryhill and Bishop Auckland. Buses will no longer serve Bowburn Estate, which will be covered by the 57/57A. Evening and Sunday buses will continue to run as now.

57/57A Durham - Shincliffe - Bowburn - This service will have a revised route and timetable. Buses will run half-hourly on Monday to Saturday Coxhoe - - Wheatley Hill - daytimes between Durham and Coxhoe via Shincliffe and Bowburn Estate. From Coxhoe, one bus per hour Peterlee (the 57) will continue to Kelloe while one bus per hour (the 57A) will extend to Hartlepool via Trimdon Village, Trimdon Grange, Trimdon Colliery, Deaf Hill and Hartlepool General Hospital. In Hartlepool town centre, all journeys will serve Victoria Road in the town centre and start/finish at the Marina. The current 57A will be withdrawn between Kelloe and Peterlee due to changes in the contract with Durham County Council. Customers travelling between Wheatley Hill and Peterlee can use the new 22. Customers from Quarrington Hill and Cassop should contact the council for details about the replacement service in these areas.

63/64 Arnison Centre - Newton Hall - This service will continue to offer a great ten-minute frequency on Monday to Saturday daytimes between the Durham City Centre - Arnison Centre, Newton Hall and Durham City Centre. All buses will run as 64 and continue from Durham City Musgrave Gardens/Sherburn Village Centre to Gilesgate offering a new ten-minute service to this area. Three buses per hour will start/finish at Musgrave Gardens while the other three buses per hour will continue to Sherburn Village via Sunderland Road, Dragon Lane (for ) and Sherburn Station. The new 22 and 24 will offer an alternative frequent service along Sherburn Road between Gilesgate and Dragonville. We are also improving the evening service so that buses run every 30 minutes between the Arnison Centre, Newton Hall, Durham City Centre and Gilesgate, then hourly to Musgrave Gardens and hourly to Sherburn. Sunday buses will run to new times and will not serve Brasside.

84 Bishop Auckland - Cockfield - This service is being withdrawn due to very low passenger numbers. Alternative journeys are available on Ingleton - Darlington service 6 between Bishop Auckland, West Auckland, Evenwood and Cockfield, as well as services 1/1B, 5/5A and X1 between Bishop Auckland and Darlington. Arriva will no longer serve Ingleton, but alternative buses are run by Scarlet Band.

86 Bishop Auckland - Escomb - This service will become part of the new 50 (see above). Witton Park - Etherley - Toft Hill

239 Easington Village - Peterlee - This service will be run by due to changes in the contract with Durham County Council. Shotton Colliery - Wingate - Please contact Durham County Council for more information. The Trimdons - Sedgefield

754 Durham - Arnison Centre - This service will be withdrawn due to low passenger numbers. Services 7 and 64 offer frequent alternative - Langley Park journeys between Durham and the Arnison Centre. Alternative services to Sacriston, and Langley Park are provided by Go North East.

853/854/857 Coxhoe - Bowburn - The 853 and 854 will continue to run to the same route and times as now. The 857 will be re-numbered 57A Durham Johnston School and will run via Durham Bus Station in both directions with minor changes to the timings.

U1 Durham - Ushaw College The first journey of the day (at 0728 from Durham City Centre to Ushaw College) will run five minutes earlier throughout to improve reliability.

X1/X2 Middlesbrough - Stockton - The X1 will run every 30 minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes between Middlesbrough, Teesdale Sedgefield - Coxhoe - Durham - University, Stockton, Sedgefield, Coxhoe and Durham. In Stockton, buses will serve both ends of the High Framwellgate Moor - Plawsworth - Street to improve connections with other services. As a result, buses will run to a new route between Stockton Chester-le-Street - Gateshead - and Middlesbrough, which will be via Thornaby railway station, Teesdale University (Station Street, Harvard Newcastle Avenue and Princeton Drive) and the A66. We are also improving the Monday to Saturday evening service to run hourly all year round instead of half-hourly during Durham University term times only. Some journeys will be run by double-deck buses to increase capacity at peak times. Most X1 journeys will extend to/from Newcastle as the X2, which will run to a new timetable. We are also introducing new stops to the X2 at Windsor Road in Birtley and at the southern end of Newcastle City Centre. These will be at John Dobson Street (towards Newcastle) and at St Nicholas Cathedral (towards Durham).

X24 Bishop Auckland - Spennymoor - This service is being shortened to run at a more regular two-hourly frequency between Durham, Chester-le Durham - Chester-le-Street - Street and the Metrocentre. We are introducing new stops at Barley Mow Shops, Station Lane in Birtley and Metrocentre Windsor Road in Birtley to improve links to the Metrocentre. There will also be a later last bus from the Metrocentre to give you more time there. Watch out for our new Metrocentre day return fares, which will be available to buy on all buses that serve Durham City Centre and allow onward travel on the X24.

X66 Darlington - Harrowgate Hill - This service will run to a revised route and timetable. Journeys towards Middlesbrough will run via Riverside Stockton - Middlesbrough Road in Stockton and serve Stands 10 and 6 in Stockton High Street at both ends. Journeys towards Darlington remain unchanged, serving the south end of Stockton High Street only.
